Here is a number to open with: £290.46. That is roughly what a single Intel Cyclone V 5CSEBA6U23I7 FPGA costs if you buy one, by itself, in single-unit quantity, from Mouser. Here is a second number: £216. That is what Heber Ltd. will charge you for an entire MiSTer Multisystem² — a finished, boxed, fanless retro console with that same class of chip already soldered to the board, surrounded by RAM, a powered USB hub, video output and a case. The console is cheaper than the silicon at its heart. That is either an accounting miracle or a lesson in how retail FPGA pricing actually works, and it is the single most quietly astonishing fact about this machine.

The Multisystem² is not brand new. Pre-orders opened on 6 May 2025 and the first units shipped that August. But 2026 is the year it stopped being a niche curiosity and turned into a product line: a JAMMA arcade edition began shipping this month, and an open-development handheld is working through its industrial-design phase. This is a status report on where the whole thing stands, with the numbers that matter and none of the box-art adjectives.

What the Multisystem² Actually Is

The one-sentence version

The Multisystem² is a consolised MiSTer machine. MiSTer is the open-source FPGA platform that reimplements old consoles, home computers and arcade boards as reconfigurable logic — not software pretending to be a Super Nintendo, but a circuit arranged to behave like one, gate for gate. In its normal form MiSTer is a Terasic DE10-Nano development board with a stack of add-on daughterboards balanced on top of it: an SDRAM module, an I/O board, a USB hub, an analogue video board, all held together by header pins and optimism. Heber's pitch is blunt: skip the sandwich, buy one board.

Two SKUs, one board

There are two models. The Digital is HDMI-only at £216 including VAT. The Analogue, at £264, adds a full analogue video and expansion feature set — RGB/SCART, VGA, optical audio, Ethernet, a SNAC port and more. Both ship “assembled – ready to use,” both are, per Heber, “designed, manufactured and assembled in the UK,” and both come with exactly zero games. The product page is explicit about that last point: “For copyright reasons we are unable to supply any games with the system.” You bring your own legally-dumped ROMs; the machine brings the hardware.

Why “no DE10-Nano” is the whole story

If you take one thing from this article, take this line straight from Heber's FAQ: “The Multisystem² uses our own custom-built system board with an integrated Cyclone®V FPGA processor. The console comes ready-to-play with no additional hardware or add-on boards required.” The classic MiSTer build is genuinely fiddly — sourcing a DE10-Nano, matching an SDRAM board, flashing a card, praying the header pins seat correctly. Heber's answer was to lay a Cyclone V straight onto a custom 10-layer PCB and integrate everything the daughterboards used to do. No dev board, no stack, no spaghetti. That single design decision is what separates this from a decade of DIY FPGA projects, and it is why the price-versus-chip paradox exists at all.

The Price, and the Paradox

The UK shop numbers, live

As of late July 2026, Heber's shop lists the Digital model at £216.00 inc VAT (£180.00 ex VAT) and the Analogue at £264.00 inc VAT (£220.00 ex VAT). Both have crept up by around £12 since launch: the May 2025 pre-order prices were £204 and £252 including VAT respectively (£170 / £210 ex). If you see “£170” or “£210” quoted anywhere today, that is the stale, tax-excluded launch figure being recycled — not what you will pay. Stock on the Digital currently reads “In stock – (Low stock level),” which is roughly where it has sat all year.

What it actually costs to land one

Sticker price is not landed price, and this is a British-made console with a global buyer base. In his 14 March 2026 review, Lon Seidman of Lon.TV reported the real-world total plainly: “I paid about $386 for mine (including shipping and tariffs).” For a US buyer, then, budget somewhere near four hundred dollars all-in for the Analogue, not the ~$280 a naive currency conversion of the Digital would suggest. That is the honest number, and it is the one to hold in your head when comparing against the alternatives below.

The chip-cost paradox, explained

Back to the opening trick. A bare Cyclone V 5CSEBA6U23I7 — the exact grade of FPGA class the Multisystem² runs — lists around £290 in single-unit quantity at Mouser. A bare Terasic DE10-Nano board (which carries a comparable Cyclone V) runs about $225 retail, or roughly $190 with academic pricing. The finished, cased, fully-integrated Digital console undercuts both. How? Volume. Heber buys silicon in production quantities against a run of thousands of boards, at a unit cost no hobbyist ordering one chip from a distributor will ever see. It is a neat, almost perverse illustration of why “just build it yourself” stopped being the cheaper path the moment someone was willing to manufacture at scale. The DIY route now buys you flexibility, not savings.

Inside the Board: Silicon and Ports

The FPGA and the memory

The heart is an Altera/Intel Cyclone V — a 28nm part with roughly 110,000 logic elements and a hardened dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 running at 800MHz. That ARM half (the “HPS,” or hard processor system) runs a small Linux that handles the menu, file access and core loading; the FPGA fabric is where the actual console logic lives. Feeding it are two memory pools, and the distinction matters: 128MB of SDRAM (Alliance) is the fast, low-latency core memory the FPGA cores use to emulate cartridge and system RAM, while 1GB of LPDDR (ISSI) serves the ARM/Linux side. Heber's own listing spells it out: “Altera Cyclone 5 FPGA with heatsink / 128MB SDRAM (Alliance) and 1GB of LPDDR RAM (ISSI).” It is fanless — “silent operation, no fan cooling required” — cooled by a heatsink alone.

Digital versus Analogue outputs

Both models share the FPGA, both memory pools, the 10-layer PCB and an integrated 7-port powered USB 2.0 hub (four front-facing ports, two rear, plus internal headers). The difference is entirely in the back panel. Digital gives you HDMI and nothing else analogue. Analogue adds a proper enthusiast spread: a 9-pin mini-DIN RGB output for SCART with C-Sync, a 15-way VGA port, a 24-bit DAC (18-bit in practice), a 3.5mm jack and TOSLINK optical audio, Ethernet, and an RTC connector. If you own a CRT, a PVM, or an OSSC-fed setup, the Analogue is not optional — it is the only one of the two that talks to that world. If your display is a modern flat panel, the Digital does everything you need and saves you £48.

SNAC, expansion, and the 50-way header

The Analogue model also carries the two features the hardcore crowd actually came for. The first is SNAC (Serial Native Accessory Converter): a port that lets original controllers and light guns talk to the FPGA cores directly, bypassing USB latency entirely, for PlayStation, SNES, N64, PC Engine and SEGA Saturn peripherals. The second is a new 50-way expansion connector that breaks out the DE10-Nano's 50 previously-stranded GPIO pins, plus Zaparoo NFC support on both models for tap-to-launch game loading. The board is, deliberately, backwards compatible with the original MiSTer Stack and Multisystem 1 accessories — Heber did not orphan its own first-generation buyers. Setup, once it arrives, is the standard MiSTer SD-card affair; you flash a card and drop cores and ROMs into a predictable layout:

Run update_all.sh once on a networked machine and it pulls every current core, arcade definition and video filter. As Hackaday put it, “just add some ROMs (legally, of course), and you're off.”

From MiST to Multisystem²

MiST, then MiSTer

None of this appeared from nowhere. The lineage starts with MiST, Till Harbaum's FPGA board from around 2013, aimed squarely at Amiga and Atari ST fans who wanted real hardware behaviour without real, dying hardware. In June 2017, Alexey “Sorgelig” Melnikov ported and dramatically expanded that concept onto Terasic's DE10-Nano dev board and named it MiSTer — the community-driven, open-source project that now reimplements hundreds of systems. The original Multisystem (2021)

Heber Ltd. — an Aylesbury-based electronics firm with some 35 years in arcade and industrial hardware — teamed with Neil Thomas of RMC and The Retro Collective to build the original MiSTer Multisystem in October 2021. That first machine was still fundamentally a carrier for a DE10-Nano: you supplied the dev board, it supplied the case, video and I/O. Depending on configuration it ran roughly $300 for a board-only setup to $510–615 fully loaded. Crucially, in July 2023 the board design went open-source hardware, with schematics, PCB files and Gerbers posted to GitHub. That open-hardware ethos carried straight into the sequel.

How the sandwich became a board

The Multisystem² was announced in December 2024, when Time Extension called it a “true all-in-one MiSTer FPGA console” coming in 2025. The engineering leap from the first Multisystem was the one described above: instead of hosting a DE10-Nano, Heber integrated the Cyclone V directly and absorbed every daughterboard function into a single custom PCB. The result is a machine that behaves exactly like a DE10 MiSTer — the cores are the same, the software is the same — but arrives as one object you plug in. Here is the whole arc:

FPGA vs Software Emulation

What “cycle-accurate” means

The reason anyone pays £216 for this instead of $80 for a Raspberry Pi is a philosophical and technical difference in how the old machine gets recreated. A software emulator runs on a general-purpose CPU and executes code that models the original chips, cycle by cycle, in software. An FPGA does not model anything — its logic gates are physically reconfigured to become a functional equivalent of the original silicon, running in parallel the way the real chips did. When people say MiSTer is “cycle-accurate,” they mean the recreated logic ticks in the same lockstep as the hardware it replaces, without a software interpreter standing in the middle.

The latency argument

The practical payoff is input latency and timing. Because there is no operating-system scheduler, no frame-buffering emulator layer and no USB-polling detour (especially via SNAC), an FPGA console can push a controller press to the screen in fewer milliseconds than most software setups, and it reproduces edge-case timing bugs that games sometimes depended on. For fighting games, shmups and anything speedrun-adjacent, that difference is the entire argument. It is also, frankly, oversold for a casual player on a modern TV — but it is real, measurable, and the reason the enthusiast market exists.

Where software still wins

FPGA is not a clean victory. Software emulation is far cheaper, updates faster, and covers systems no one has yet written an FPGA core for — anything sixth-generation and up (PS2, GameCube, Dreamcast at full speed) is effectively out of MiSTer's reach today. If your goal is breadth and value rather than timing purity, a Raspberry Pi running RetroPie, a Batocera box, or a tuned RetroArch cores setup will do more for less money. The Multisystem² is not competing with those on value. It is competing on fidelity, and it knows it.

What the Reviewers Found

Lon.TV: price, thermals, and the gap it bridges

Lon Seidman's March 2026 review is the most-cited real-world account, partly for that $386 landed figure and partly for his verdict on how it runs. He found it “thermally balanced, maintaining stability even during intensive tasks” — no small thing for a fanless box — and framed its purpose better than any marketing line has: it “bridges the gap between the technical flexibility of the original FPGA development boards and the convenience of a dedicated home console.” He also confirmed the project's authorship as “RMC's Neil and electronics manufacturer Heber Limited,” and the physical layout of four front-facing and two rear USB ports.

Hackaday: MiSTer for mortals

Hackaday's May 2025 write-up, headlined “MiSTer for mortals,” zeroed in on the accessibility angle. It called the Multisystem² a “surprisingly noob-friendly FPGA console that finally gets the MiSTer experience out of the tinker cave and into the living room,” noting that “you don't need to be a soldering wizard” and that the hardware is “100% compatible with the MiSTer software, but allows some additional future features.” The piece is not uncritical — it flags “the usual display inconsistencies and that eternal jungle of controller mappings” that every MiSTer inherits — but its core observation is the one Heber built the product around: “The FPGA is integrated in the mainboard. No RAM modules, no USB hub spaghetti.”

Metal Game Solid: the daily-driver test

The most useful long-term take came from LSDowdle at Metal Game Solid, whose hands-on concluded that “the Multisystem 2 will be my system of choice for some time to come.” He rated the SNAC implementation “a much more elegant solution” than USB adapters, and — in the kind of detail marketing never gives you — grumbled that the case is “pretty light and I kinda wish it was taller and had some lead weights in it.” His bottom line was a plain “I highly recommend.” Three independent reviewers, three angles, one shared conclusion: it does what it claims, with the ordinary MiSTer quirks intact.

The Growing Multisystem² Family

The JAMMA Arcade edition

The 2026 story is expansion. The Multisystem² Arcade is a JAMMA-native version aimed at real arcade cabinets, priced around $350, with pre-orders that opened 6 May 2026 and shipping that, per Heber, was “planned to start in August and will continue into September 2026” — which puts it right about now. It integrates an audio amplifier and a “CTRLDock Arcade” handling JAMMA dual-player I/O, analogue inputs for spinners, trackballs and wheels, and Kick harnesses supporting up to nine buttons per player. There is even a five-pack bundle for operators. It is the same FPGA brain in a cabinet-ready body, and it extends the “no DE10 needed” premise into the one environment — the arcade — where wiring complexity was always worst.

The Multisystem² Pocket

The more speculative sibling is the Multisystem² Pocket, an FPGA handheld launched on 21 May 2026 not as a finished product but as an open-development project. Heber and the Retro Collective are designing it in public; as the launch post put it, “We are doing this project in the open, from the start, with your involvement,” with an early milestone simply to “prove we can successfully drive an LCD screen directly from the MiSTer FPGA framework.” The July 2026 update has the team choosing between three industrial-design concepts — features on the table include a 4″ high-resolution display, dual stereo speakers, dual analogue sticks, twin shoulder buttons, a curved ergonomic back and removable “JOYSTIX” slide-off controls, targeting NES, Game Boy, Neo Geo, Mega Drive, PC Engine and SNES. Note what the Pocket is not: it is not the widescreen “Wide Boy” Darius demo, which is a display tech test, not the handheld.

Reading the order queue

You will see a figure floating around that the Multisystem² has “sold over 17,000 units.” Treat it with care. That number is drawn from sequential order-reference numbers, and it counts orders placed in the fulfilment queue, not consoles shipped — shipping only began in August 2025. Early-2026 coverage put the picture at roughly 20,000 orders logged against 10,000-plus fulfilled, with batches processed in order-number sequence. Heber's “off-the-shelf by spring 2026” goal has effectively slipped: the shop still gates the Digital at two per customer and flags low stock. So: strong, sustained demand — yes. Seventeen thousand consoles in living rooms — not yet. The honest word is “backlog,” not “sales.”

How It Stacks Up

Against a software box

On pure cost-per-system, the Multisystem² loses to software and it is not close. A Raspberry Pi 5 with RetroPie will emulate more systems, including generations MiSTer cannot touch, for a fifth of the price. The same is true of the growing pile of ARM handhelds like the Retroid Pocket, which run Android emulators cheaply and portably. What you give up is timing fidelity and latency, and what you gain is breadth and battery life. Different products for different buyers; anyone comparing them on price alone has missed the point of both.

Against the Analogue lineup

The closest philosophical rival is Analogue, whose FMV-clean FPGA machines — the Super Nt, Mega Sg, and especially the cartridge-slot Analogue Pocket — also use reconfigurable logic rather than emulation. The Pocket, which Engadget reviewed at $220, is polished, closed and single-vendor: gorgeous, but locked to what Analogue ships. MiSTer, and therefore the Multisystem², is the opposite — open, community-driven, sprawling, hundreds of cores, and messier for it. You are choosing between a beautifully-finished appliance and an open platform. If you want to dump and play your own carts on real silicon, pairing an open FPGA console with a tool to dump your own cartridges is very much the MiSTer way of doing things.

Against rolling your own

And against the DIY DE10-Nano build — the thing the Multisystem² exists to replace — the maths is the whole article in one table. Here is what the various routes to cycle-accurate retro actually cost in mid-2026:

What Happens Next: 6–12 Months

The near-certain calls

First, the JAMMA Arcade will ship on schedule through August into September 2026 — Heber's fulfilment record with the base console, delayed availability aside, has been “late but real,” and the pre-order-by-number model gives them a clean queue to work through. Expect operator and cab-builder coverage to drive a second wave of attention, and expect the five-pack bundle to matter more than the single unit for that audience. Second, the Digital and Analogue prices hold near £216 / £264; they have moved only ~£12 in a full year, and nothing in the component market suggests a cut. If anything, watch for a modest rise if the memory-pricing environment tightens.

The probable ones

Third, the Multisystem² Pocket stays in open development well into 2026 and realistically ships in 2027. An open, community-steered industrial-design process with three live concepts as of July is not a device that lands before Christmas; the responsible read is a 2027 handheld, and I would bet against any firm 2026 ship date. Fourth, expect the off-the-shelf, no-queue availability Heber wanted for spring 2026 to finally arrive — the low-stock, two-per-customer gating should ease as the backlog clears, turning this from a pre-order into a product you can simply buy.

The wildcard

Fifth, and least certain: watch for MiSTer core progress, not hardware, to define the platform's ceiling. The Multisystem² is only ever as capable as the cores the open-source community writes, and the frontier — Saturn maturity, any credible sixth-generation work — lives entirely upstream of Heber. If a major new core lands in the next year, the Multisystem² inherits it free. If the core scene stalls, no amount of nice casework changes what the box can do. The hardware question is basically settled; the software question never is.

The Machine's Verdict

Who this is for

The Multisystem² is a specialist tool sold at a fair, almost surprising price. If you already know why FPGA latency and timing accuracy matter to you — if you own a CRT, care about SNAC, and have opinions about scanline generation — the Analogue at £264 is close to a no-brainer, and the fact that it undercuts a bare DE10-Nano stack while removing all the assembly pain is the rare case of the convenient option also being the cheaper one. If you are on a modern TV and just want cycle-accurate play without the tinkering, the £216 Digital is the cleanest on-ramp to MiSTer that exists.

Who should skip it

If you want breadth, portability or value, this is the wrong purchase and you should feel no guilt buying a Pi, a handheld, or a software box instead — they will serve you better for less. The Multisystem² does not emulate the sixth generation, it does not include games, and it inherits every display and controller-mapping quirk the MiSTer project has ever had. None of that is a defect; it is the shape of the thing.

The bottom line

What Heber has actually accomplished is quieter than any spec: they took a decade-old enthusiast platform notorious for its assembly-required jankiness and turned it into an object you plug in. The chip-cheaper-than-the-console paradox is the headline, but the real achievement is the boring one — a supported, UK-manufactured, open-hardware MiSTer that a normal person can own without a soldering iron or a parts spreadsheet. Three reviewers independently reached “I recommend it.” So does The Machine, with the only caveat that matters: know which of the two you need before you check out, and know that you are buying fidelity, not value. On those terms, at £216, it is one of the most quietly justifiable purchases in retro gaming right now.
