Search RetroPie PC in July 2026 and you walk into a strange, quiet room. The board that RetroPie users most wanted arrived to find no image waiting for it.
The v4.8 Freeze
The word “freeze” gets thrown around loosely, so let us be precise about what is frozen and what is not, because the distinction is the entire misunderstanding at the heart of the “RetroPie is dead” takes.
What v4.8 actually covers
RetroPie's last official image is v4.8, released 14 March 2022. It ships builds for the Pi 1 and Zero, the Pi 2/3 and Zero 2 W, and the Pi 4/400. As of mid-2026 that image is more than four years old, and it predates the Pi 5 by roughly nineteen months. If you go to the download page expecting a turnkey Pi 5 image, you will not find one. The setup script never stopped

The RetroPie-Setup script still receives commits — the repo saw updates as recently as this spring — and it carries roughly 10,000 GitHub stars. RetroPie is not abandonware. What has stalled is the packaging cadence: the project stopped cutting fresh, download-and-flash SD images. The engine runs; the factory that stamps out pre-built cartridges went quiet. Into this vacuum — a beloved project with no fresh image and a hot new board it doesn't officially support — steps the internet's favorite genre: the confident-sounding release that isn't one.
What the video claims
A YouTube upload has been circulating that announces a “2026 RetroPie Suite,” claiming to ship four images the same day for the Pi 2, the Pi 3B+, the Pi 4, and the Pi 5, all “updated to 2024, 2025, and 2026 standards.” It is polished. It uses the RetroPie name and the RetroPie look. It sounds exactly like the official Pi 5 image the community has wanted for two years.
What the project actually shipped
Nothing. There is no “2026 Suite” on retropie.org.uk. There is no such release on the RetroPie GitHub. The official image is still v4.8 from March 2022, full stop. What the video is offering is a community repack — a third party's pre-baked SD image wearing the project's name. The Machine's rule of thumb, refined over many such episodes: if a “release” does not exist on the project's own repository or its own website, it is fan fiction with a boot splash. A YouTube thumbnail is not a changelog.
Why a stranger's image is a security problem, not a convenience
This is not pedantry about branding. Flashing someone's pre-built SD image means booting their root filesystem — their packages, their scripts, their whatever-else — with full privileges, on a machine you may later put on your home network. Provenance is the entire point of trusting a download. The official setup script is auditable and comes from a known repository; an anonymous “Suite” image is a black box you are asked to run as root. Return to the repository description: Shell script to set up a Raspberry Pi/Odroid/PC with RetroArch emulator and various cores. That is not aspirational. The RetroPie-Setup script detects its platform and installs accordingly. On a PC, you give it a 64-bit Debian or Ubuntu install to sit on top of, and it does the rest.
The manual path, start to finish
On a fresh 64-bit Debian/Ubuntu system — the desktop-class equivalent of the “Pi OS Bookworm Lite 64 bit” base abj described — the flow is four commands and a menu:

Raspberry Pi raised prices three times in roughly four months. In December 2025, Engadget reported increases of $5 to $25 across the Pi 4 and Pi 5 line, alongside a new bottom-rung 1GB Pi 5 at $45. This is the same crunch reshaping the rest of the market — the one dragging high-end GPU street prices upward and squeezing every device that ships with DRAM soldered to it. Handhelds took the hit too, which is why builders are re-pricing options like the Retroid Pocket line against a moving target.
When does it end?
Not soon. IDC research manager Jitesh Ubrani, quoted by Engadget, was grim: “memory shortages will persist well into 2027. While we anticipate some easing of prices beginning in 2028, the market is unlikely to return to 2025 levels.” IDC cut its 2026 PC-shipment forecast to a 11.6% decline, and named HP, Samsung, Valve, and Framework among the companies eating the cost. Upton calls it temporary. The analysts are measuring “temporary” in years.

The $305 question
The 16GB board tells the whole story: $120 to $305, a 154% increase, in under a year and a half. Even the sensible middle of the range — the 8GB Pi 5 that most emulation builds actually want — climbed from $80 to $175, more than doubling. The 1GB variant holds at $45, but it exists precisely to give buyers a cheap on-ramp; Raspberry Pi's stated goal, per TechRadar, is that “we want to make sure you don't pay for more memory than you need.” For a retro-gaming box, 1GB is a compromise, not a target. The “cheap console” framing that built RetroPie is, at the 8GB tier and above, a memory in both senses of the word.
Where a used PC wins
Now do the comparison that the price table forces. An 8GB Pi 5 is $175 before you add a power supply, a case, active cooling, and a fast SD or NVMe drive — call it $230 to $260 all-in. A used small-form-factor or mini PC with an quad-core desktop chip and 8–16GB of already-installed RAM routinely sells in the $80–$150 range. For a fixed-hardware, ultra-cheap handheld experience the calculus is different — a sub-$100 Miyoo-class device undercuts everything — but for a couch console built around RetroPie, the PC is no longer the extravagant option. It is frequently the cheaper one, and it is faster. That sentence would have been absurd in 2022. It is just true now.
The Emulation Ceiling
Price is only half the argument. The other half is what each platform can actually run, because a cheaper box that emulates less is not automatically a better deal.
What the Pi 5 clears

Where x86 pulls ahead
A cheap x86 box does not just match the Pi 5 — it moves the ceiling up an entire console generation. GameCube goes from “proof of concept” to comfortably playable; PS2 goes from “no” to “yes”; Wii and even light PS3/Switch titles enter the conversation on the right silicon. Stack the two halves together and the conclusion writes itself. When a mid-tier Pi 5 build costs about the same as a used mini PC, and the PC emulates a full generation higher, the Pi's remaining advantages narrow to three: physical size, power draw, and the GPIO/HAT ecosystem for arcade cabinets and custom controls. Those are real advantages — a Pi behind a TV or inside a bartop is elegant in a way a beige mini PC is not. Stars versus shipping cadence
Note the inversion in the table. RetroPie carries roughly 10,381 GitHub stars to Batocera's 3,084 — more than triple the mindshare — yet it is Batocera that ships the current image (43.1, from 30 May 2026) and the Pi 5 support.
