Analogue shipped firmware 1.5.0 for the Analogue 3D on July 21, 2026, and in doing so it crossed a line the company spent the better part of two years insisting it would never approach: it started editing the picture. The headline feature, branded Internal Graphical Upscaling, doubles the horizontal resolution of Nintendo 64 games — twice as many pixels across the screen — while, Analogue says, leaving timing and performance untouched. It is the twelfth firmware build since the $249.99 console began shipping on November 18, 2025, and it is the one that will start the arguments.

This is not a small patch dressed up as news. For a purist FPGA console whose entire pitch is fidelity to original silicon, deliberately manufacturing pixels the Nintendo 64 never rendered is a philosophical about-face. Whether it is a betrayal or a mercy depends entirely on which side of the accuracy wars you sit — and there are very loud people on both sides.

1.5.0 Doubles the Pixels

Let us be precise about what changed on July 21, because the marketing language and the engineering reality are not the same thing, and this site cares about the second one.

The one-line version

Firmware 1.5.0 adds a toggle — buried in Settings > Advanced > Horizontal Upscaling — that, in Analogue's own words, "doubles resolution horizontally for twice as many pixels onscreen without affecting 2D graphics." The build weighs 22.3 MB, up from the 21.8 MB that the previous several releases held steady at, which is a small but real signal that this is a pipeline change rather than a bug-fix roll-up. It carries the MD5 a00db9c90a2d8f09f25ec7f2d47c1802, and like every Analogue 3D update before it, it costs nothing.

Why this build is different

Every prior update refined the shell around the emulation core: the library, save management, HDMI handshakes, controller pairing. 1.5.0 reaches into the rendering itself. That distinction matters. An FPGA console's whole marketing edifice is built on the claim that it reproduces the original chip logic rather than approximating it in software. The moment you start adding pixels the original hardware could not draw, you are no longer reproducing — you are enhancing. Analogue knows this, which is why the feature ships as an opt-in toggle rather than a default, and why the copy leans so hard on the phrase "without affecting 2D graphics."

What it deliberately leaves alone

The 2D carve-out is the interesting engineering choice. Menus, HUDs, text, and sprite-based interface elements are left at native resolution, so nothing gets the awkward smeared-or-sharpened look that plagues naive upscalers. This is a targeted intervention in the 3D geometry path, not a blanket sharpening filter slapped on the HDMI output. Polygon edges tighten, distant geometry firms up, and the interface stays bit-exact. It is, in other words, the opposite of what a cheap upscaling box does — and that difference is the entire reason the feature is defensible.

The cadence, decoded

There is a rhythm here. A launch build, a rapid stability patch ten days later, a two-month holiday silence, then a frantic fortnightly sprint through the spring, settling into a monthly major-feature cadence by summer. This is not a company shipping and forgetting; it is a company treating firmware as a living product. The table below is the complete public record.

The holiday gap and the fortnightly sprint

Notice the two-month hole between 1.1.9 (November 28) and 1.2.0 (January 30). That is the holiday launch window, when engineering teams go quiet and support queues fill up. Then the dam breaks: 1.2.0 through 1.2.6 land in roughly three months, six builds averaging one every fortnight. That is triage — Analogue clearly shipped hardware with a rougher OS than it wanted and spent the spring paying down the debt. By the time save states arrived in 1.3.0 on May 15, the console had graduated from firefighting to feature work.

How to actually install it

The process is refreshingly analog for a company named Analogue: you copy a file to a card. There is no Wi-Fi, no over-the-air updating, no account. Here is the whole procedure, plus the checksum you should verify if you are the paranoid type — and around firmware, you should be.

Inside 1.5.0: How Upscaling Works

The word "upscaling" is doing a lot of work in the marketing, and it means something narrower and more clever than the box-standard version most people picture.

Doubling the horizontal, sparing the 2D

Conventional upscaling takes the finished frame and stretches it, then tries to hide the stretching with sharpening. Analogue's implementation does the opposite: it increases the amount of visual information before the picture is composited, so the extra detail is genuine geometry sampling rather than interpolated guesswork. The doubling is horizontal only in this first release — the vertical axis is untouched — which is why the feature reads as a first step rather than a finished product. Crucially, the 2D layer is exempt, so a game's HUD and menus render at their original resolution while the 3D world behind them gains density.

Where in the pipeline it happens

The changelog credits "extensive enhancements to the RDP and VI." For the uninitiated: the N64's Reality Display Processor (RDP) is the rasterizer that turns triangles into pixels, and the Video Interface (VI) is the final stage that scans that framebuffer out to the display, complete with the console's infamous anti-aliasing and blur. By intervening at the RDP and VI rather than at the HDMI encoder, Analogue is manipulating the image while it is still native N64 data, not after it has become a generic video signal. That is the technically honest place to do this, and it is the reason the result looks like a sharper N64 rather than a filtered screenshot. It is a genuinely different thing from running the same game through a RetroArch core with its resolution slider cranked, where the enhancement happens in software with no pretense of hardware fidelity.

The independent-testing caveat

Here is where deadpan earns its keep. Every claim above is Analogue's. As Notebookcheck's Andreas Sebayang noted in his July 23 write-up, the upscaling is "likely the most significant change" in the update's history, but the coverage so far "relies primarily on Analogue's general claims rather than independent testing." Translation: nobody outside Analogue has yet published frame-timing captures proving the "no performance hit" claim under load. Time Extension called it "a game changer" on the strength of the demo footage, which is exactly the kind of enthusiasm that ought to be checked with a capture card. Believe the feature exists; reserve judgment on the "free lunch" part until someone measures it.

The Cycle-Accuracy Fight

You cannot understand the RSP fixes tucked into 1.5.0 without understanding the fight that produced them. Barely a month after launch, the 3D walked into the buzzsaw of N64 homebrew's most credentialed critic.

What Kaze Emanuar measured

In December 2025, veteran N64 developer Kaze Emanuar — the man behind some of the most aggressive real-hardware optimization work on the platform — put the 3D on the bench and was unsparing. "This thing is nowhere near cycle accurate," he said in the video Notebookcheck summarized on December 22. His numbers: the CPU ran roughly 6% slower than original silicon, and the RSP — the N64's programmable vector coprocessor, and the single hardest part of the machine to reproduce — around 30% slower. Overall input-to-output lag came out about 5% worse, and a specific title, Diddy Kong Racing, ran roughly 4% down on frames. For a $250 console selling accuracy as its reason to exist, those are uncomfortable figures.

The quiet RSP rewrite

Read the changelogs since December in that light and a pattern emerges. Firmware 1.2.3 (March) quietly added RSP dual-instruction interlock work. Then 1.5.0's "Core Improvements" section lists, verbatim, "Full RSP scalar/vector interlock behavior implementation" and "Complete RSP branch and dual instruction behavior implementation," plus a progressive-scan jitter fix. Analogue does not name Kaze, and it does not have to. That is a company steadily rewriting the timing behavior of exactly the subsystem its most visible critic called out. The honest caveat: these are correctness-of-behavior fixes, not a published speed benchmark. Nobody has yet re-run Kaze's tests against 1.5.0 and reported the RSP gap closing, so treat the rewrite as responsiveness to the critique rather than proof the critique is resolved.

Why "close enough" is the whole debate

The philosophical rub is that the 3D is fast enough that almost no one playing it will ever notice the deficit — and that is precisely what infuriates the accuracy crowd, because "nobody will notice" is the argument software emulation has made for twenty years. If a 5% timing wobble is acceptable, the FPGA premium gets harder to justify on purity grounds alone. Analogue's counter is that it keeps narrowing the gap for free, build after build, which is a thing a software emulator's upstream can do too, but a thing a sealed retro console historically never did. That is the genuinely novel part of this story: the hardware is getting more accurate after you bought it.

Save States, Screenshots and the Feature Arc

Strip out the upscaling headline and the 2026 update stream still reads as a console growing a real operating system in public. Three features define the arc.

Memories: save states arrive (1.3.0)

Firmware 1.3.0, on May 15, added save states — branded, in the twee Analogue house style, as "Memories." The implementation is sensible: up to 20 states per game, with the oldest automatically pruned and pinned states preserved. Time Extension called it the platform's "most significant update yet" at the time, a title 1.5.0 has since taken. Save states on a cartridge-based FPGA console are not trivial — the machine has to snapshot the entire state of a hardware-accurate core — so this was the moment the 3D stopped being a fancy cartridge slot and started being a modern platform.

Screenshots and the Gallery (1.4.0)

A month later, 1.4.0 (June 23) added screenshots and a built-in Gallery, capturing "definitive recreations of original CRT displays" in what Analogue calls bit-perfect 4K HDR. The hotkeys vary by pad — Star on the 8BitDo 64, Capture on the NSO controller, Z+Start+R on an original N64 pad. It is a genuinely nice feature with one glaring omission, and MMORPG.com's Joseph Bradford named it immediately: "I do wish that the A3D had a WiFi feature so I could simply upload the screenshots direct from the console." There is no wireless radio in the box, so every screenshot lives on the microSD until you physically pull the card. Capturing in 4K HDR and then sneakernetting the files off on an SD card is a very 2026 kind of retro.

The flash-cart fix nobody expected (1.2.4)

The sleeper hit of the year was 1.2.4 (March 28), which rebuilt how the library handles flash carts. Before it, swapping ROMs on an EverDrive left the library confused, treating one physical cart as one entry and losing per-game saves and settings. After it, the OS tracks each ROM header as its own library entry. As Notebookcheck's Rahim Amir Noorali put it, "switching between ROMs now automatically creates new entries," each with its own saves, Rumble Pak, and virtual Controller Pak. That single change resolved the loudest complaint from the flash-cart crowd — the people most likely to be dumping their own cartridges and running them off an SD card, which remains the legally cleanest way to build a library you already physically own.

How the Analogue 3D Got Here

None of this happened in a vacuum. The 3D is the fifth act in a decade-long project, and the N64 was always going to be the hardest one.

Analogue's FPGA lineage

Analogue built its reputation reproducing older, simpler consoles in field-programmable gate arrays: the Super Nt for the SNES, the Mega Sg for the Genesis/Mega Drive, and the multi-format Analogue Pocket, which shipped in December 2021 and became the company's breakout. Each used comparatively modest FPGAs because the source hardware was comparatively tame. The 3D is a different animal. It runs an Intel Cyclone 10 GX with roughly 220,000 logic elements and outputs up to 4K over HDMI 2.1 with HDR and VRR — the first Analogue console built for a modern television rather than a scaler and a CRT.

The N64 was always the hard one

The reason it took Analogue this long to get to Nintendo's 64-bit machine is that the N64 is notoriously the most difficult fourth-to-fifth-generation console to reproduce. Its Rambus RDRAM is high-bandwidth but high-latency in a way that shaped how every game was written. Its Reality Signal Processor runs microcode that developers customized per-game, so "the N64" is really hundreds of subtly different machines. Reproducing that in gate logic, rather than papering over it in a software high-level emulation, is exactly the work Kaze was grading — and exactly why a 5% deficit is, in context, an achievement even if it is not perfection.

Two years of delays

Analogue announced the 3D on October 16, 2023 and promptly missed every window it floated — Q1 2025, then summer, then late August, then Q4 — before finally shipping on November 18, 2025. That is the kind of schedule that either signals a company being careful or a company in over its head, and the frantic post-launch patch cadence suggests a little of both. What the Critics Actually Said

The 3D reviewed well at launch and has divided experts since. The split is instructive: mainstream reviewers loved it, homebrew developers picked at it, and both were right.

The reviews at launch

Engadget's Tim Stevens delivered the most quotable verdict in his November review: "Your Nintendo 64 games never looked so good, but Analogue's greatest system yet can't fix some of the N64's inherent flaws." IGN's Seth G. Macy scored it 8/10 and called it "the best possible way to play your N64 library outside of the original hardware hooked up to a CRT." GamesRadar+ was warmer still, saying in its review that the 3D "sets a new bar for retro console remakes," and Gizmodo flatly titled its take "the console your N64 games deserve" at the $250 price.

The dissent

Against that chorus sat Kaze Emanuar's cycle-accuracy critique and, from a more practical angle, Modern Vintage Gamer's early frustration with flash-cart handling — the exact pain point 1.2.4 later addressed. This is the healthy version of a launch: the enthusiast press validated the experience, the technical community pressure-tested the claims, and Analogue used the criticism as a to-do list. The screenshots-with-no-Wi-Fi gripe from MMORPG's Bradford falls in the same bucket — a legitimate ding the company can, and probably will, only half-answer.

Where the consensus landed

Net it out and the reviewer consensus is that the 3D is the best turnkey way to play real N64 cartridges on a modern 4K set, full stop, with the understanding that "best" and "perfect" are different words. The people who care about the 5% will keep a real console and a CRT. Everyone else will not notice, and 1.5.0's upscaler is aimed squarely at that everyone-else.

Analogue 3D vs MiSTer vs Emulation

The 3D does not exist alone. There are three other credible ways to play N64 games in 2026, and each makes a different trade.

The FPGA rival: MiSTer

The open-source MiSTer project is the 3D's only real FPGA peer, and its N64 core has matured considerably. The catch is that MiSTer is a build-it-yourself platform — you are assembling boards and flashing cores, not opening a box — and its N64 support, while impressive, remains a work in progress rather than a polished product. Purpose-built MiSTer hardware like the MiSTer Multisystem 2 narrows the convenience gap but not the price gap, and it will happily play a hundred other systems the 3D cannot touch. If you want one machine that only does N64 and does it beautifully out of the box, the 3D wins; if you want an FPGA workbench, MiSTer does.

The free option: software emulation

The honest competitor for most people is a PC and a free emulator. Modern N64 emulation on a decent machine will run everything, upscale far more aggressively than 1.5.0's modest 2x horizontal, and cost nothing beyond hardware you already own. What it will not do is accept your physical cartridge, reproduce the exact hardware behavior, or feel like a console. That is the entire value proposition of the 3D: it is emulation's convenience skeptics buying back the ritual of the cartridge. Whether that ritual is worth $250 is a personal question, not a technical one.

The purist option: original hardware

And then there is the machine itself. A used N64 and a CRT is, by definition, 100% cycle-accurate — it is the cycles. It costs a fraction of the 3D on the secondhand market. It also outputs 240p over composite to a heavy glass tube you have to source and haul, with none of the save states, screenshots, or upscaling. This is the option Kaze effectively defends and the option almost nobody actually wants to live with daily.

What It Costs in 2026

The sticker is simple. The real cost, as ever, is in the accessories — and the brief that landed on my desk had the console price flat wrong, so let us set the record straight.

The sticker and the asterisks

The Analogue 3D is a $249.99 console. It launched at that price on November 18, 2025; a tariff-driven restock a week later briefly carried a $269.99 tag, per Engadget. It is not, and never was, a $399.99 machine — if you saw that number, you saw a scalper or a mistake. It ships with a 16 GB microSD card preinstalled, which is enough for firmware and saves and screenshots for a good while. Firmware is free, forever, and twelve builds deep that promise has held.

The accessory math

The 3D does not include a controller, which is the asterisk that turns a $250 console into a $290 one. The official pad is the 8BitDo 64 at $39.99, a modern wireless take on the N64 controller. You can pair original N64 controllers and the Nintendo Switch Online N64 pad too, so if you already own controllers the tax disappears. Flash-cart players will spend far more: an EverDrive 64 X7 runs roughly $175-215 from Krikzz, which is a reminder that the 3D's biggest recurring cost is the software-delivery hardware, not the console.

Limited editions on the horizon

Analogue has also confirmed limited-edition colorway variants echoing unreleased N64 finishes, including an Atomic Purple version, which is catnip for the collector who already owns a launch unit. Those are hardware SKUs rather than firmware, but they signal a company treating the 3D as a franchise it intends to keep selling, not a one-and-done drop.

What Comes After 1.5.0

Prediction is a mug's game, but the firmware record is legible enough to make a few calls for the next six to twelve months. Here is where I would put my chips.

Near-certain

  1. Vertical upscaling follows the horizontal. 1.5.0 doubled one axis and pointedly left the other alone. A future build that adds vertical doubling — or a combined 2x2 mode — is the obvious next step, and Analogue's iterate-in-public pattern all but guarantees it lands before mid-2027.
  2. An independent cycle-accuracy re-test. Someone with a capture rig — Kaze, Digital Foundry, or an ambitious YouTuber — will benchmark the post-1.5.0 RSP behavior and publish frame-timing numbers. Expect a public back-and-forth about whether the gap actually narrowed.

Likely

  1. Point releases to stabilize the upscaler. Every major feature on this console has spawned a cleanup patch. A 1.5.x addressing edge-case games that misbehave under upscaling is close to a lock.
  2. More controller and Modkit support. 1.5.0 already added simultaneous C-buttons for the 8BitDo N64 Modkit (with Modkit firmware 1.04+). Broadening third-party pad support is a cheap, reliable win Analogue keeps returning to.

Don't hold your breath

  1. No Wi-Fi, no cloud upload. The hardware has no wireless radio, so Bradford's screenshot-upload wish cannot be firmware-solved. Analogue will keep leaning on SD-card export, and any "connected" feature would require a next-gen unit. I would bet against any wireless capability in the next twelve months.

The Machine's Verdict

Firmware 1.5.0 is the most interesting thing Analogue has done to the 3D since it shipped, and not entirely for the reasons the press release wants.

The feature is real; the free-lunch claim is unproven

Horizontal upscaling that spares 2D graphics and intervenes at the RDP/VI level is a genuinely clever, genuinely optional enhancement — exactly the kind a purist can leave switched off and everyone else can enjoy. But the "no performance cost" line is still riding on Analogue's word, and until someone outside the company measures it under load, treat it as a promise rather than a fact. Sebayang's caution stands.

The bigger story is the cadence

Twelve free builds in eight months, a save-state system, a screenshot pipeline, a flash-cart fix, and now an upscaler — on a sealed retro console that most companies would have shipped and abandoned. Whatever you think of the 5% timing deficit, a machine that keeps getting measurably better after purchase is a new and welcome species. The 3D was the best turnkey way to play real N64 cartridges on a 4K set the day it launched, and every month it quietly extends the lead. 1.5.0 is not the ending. On this update schedule, there isn't one yet.
