MiSTer Multisystem 2: £216 for a £290 Chip (2026)
The Machine has audited enough "consolised" FPGA boxes to flinch at the word. This one earns it.
Somewhere in Aylesbury, a firm that has spent three and a half decades on arcade and industrial electronics has shipped one of the most self-negating products in retro gaming: a console that costs less than the single chip it is built around. The MiSTer Multisystem 2, a collaboration between Heber Ltd and Neil Thomas of RMC and The Retro Collective, sells for £216 in its Digital trim. The Intel/Altera Cyclone V FPGA soldered to its mainboard — the part doing all of the actual work — runs about £290 as a single unit at Mouser. That is not a rounding error. That is the entire pitch.
As of August 2026 the machine is no longer a promise. It shipped in the summer of 2025, the JAMMA arcade edition is going out the door this month, and an open-development handheld is being argued over in public on the MiSTer forums. What "consolised MiSTer" actually means

Heber first floated the Multisystem 2 in late 2024, framed around a single goal: an all-in-one MiSTer machine that ships complete, with no DE10-Nano, no clone board, and no RAM add-ons required. Digital vs Analogue: Two SKUs, £48 Apart
The £216 Digital: HDMI and restraint
The Digital model is the volume play. For £216 you get the Cyclone V with a heatsink, 128MB of Alliance SDRAM for core memory plus 1GB of ISSI LPDDR for the ARM/Linux side, an integrated powered 7-port USB 2.0 hub, HDMI out (which also supports direct-video DAC output over the same connector), and the same 10-layer PCB as the flagship. Pay the extra £48 and the Analogue model (£264 inc VAT, £220 ex) adds everything a display purist and a real-controller obsessive wants: a 9-pin mini-DIN RGB output with audio and C-Sync for SCART (wired to the Genesis 2 / Mega Drive 2 pinout), a 15-way VGA-style port for feeding CRTs, LCDs and arcade monitors, a 24-bit analogue video path (switchable to 18-bit via onboard DIP switches), TOSLINK optical audio, an Ethernet port, and — crucially — a SNAC cartridge expansion slot plus a 50-way dual-row future-expansion connector that breaks out the otherwise-unused DE10-Nano pins. Which one to buy
If your output device is a modern TV or a capture card, the Digital model is the correct answer and the £48 is wasted. If you own a CRT, a PVM, a SCART chain, or a shelf of SNAC adapters that let original controllers and cartridges talk to the FPGA with zero added latency, the Analogue model is the only one worth considering. Why "No DE10-Nano" Is the Whole Story
The sandwich the hobby was built on
To understand why soldering one chip down is a headline, you have to understand what it replaces. The canonical MiSTer build starts with a Terasic DE10-Nano — an education/development board carrying the Cyclone V — and then stacks accessories on top: a 128MB (or 32MB) SDRAM module because the DE10's onboard RAM is not enough for many cores, a USB hub board to get more than one controller in, an I/O board for analogue video and audio, and often a fan and a case. The silicon inside
The chip itself is a 28nm Intel Cyclone V (5CSEBA6U23I7): roughly 110,000 logic elements paired with a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 running at 800MHz on the hard-processor side. That A9 runs the Linux "HPS" that manages the menu, loads cores, and handles file I/O, while the FPGA fabric becomes whichever machine you asked for. It is not a fast chip by 2026 standards, and it does not need to be — it is recreating hardware from an era when a 3.58MHz Z80 was a serious CPU. Why the chip costs more than the console
The paradox is really a lesson in supply chains. Hackaday's coverage framed the Multisystem 2's significance in one line: it "finally gets the MiSTer experience out of the tinker cave and into the living room." In May 2026 Heber and The Retro Collective launched the Multisystem2 Pocket Project as open-innovation development — designing a MiSTer handheld in public, with community input, industrial design by Relay Industries and injection moulding planned. It will not be cheap the way an ARM handheld is cheap; a Retroid Pocket 6 at $244 runs Android and software emulation and will out-spec it on paper. The Catch: No Games, Low Stock, and a Queue

Heber ships the Multisystem 2 with no games included, explicitly for copyright reasons. Availability is the other asterisk. The Digital model has sat at "In stock – (Low stock level)" with a two-per-customer cap for much of its life, while the Analogue model — the pricier one — shows "In stock, ready to ship." That inversion tells you the volume SKU is supply-constrained, and it is the reason Heber's stated ambition of a fully off-the-shelf, buy-it-anytime product has kept slipping. A global memory squeeze has not helped; the same pressure that has made RAM a headline in 2026 touches any device shipping SDRAM and LPDDR.
Quirks: displays and controller mappings
Finally, temper the plug-and-play framing. This is still MiSTer, and MiSTer's soft edges come with it — Hackaday's "usual display inconsistencies and that eternal jungle of controller mappings" are real. First boot involves scaler settings, per-core video modes, and mapping every controller you own. The hardware got easy; the ecosystem is exactly as fiddly and as rewarding as it ever was. The Machine does not do horoscopes, but the trajectory is legible. A firm that has gone from one console to a console-plus-arcade-plus-handheld line in eighteen months is not slowing down. Five calls for the rest of 2026 and into 2027:
- The JAMMA edition sells out its first run before the end of 2026. An uncapped pre-order plus operator five-packs plus genuine cabinet demand is a different market from hobbyist desktops, and $350 for a drop-in cycle-accurate board is priced to move.
