MiSTer Multisystem 2: £216 vs a £290 Chip (2026)
Here is a sentence that should not survive contact with a spreadsheet: the MiSTer Multisystem 2, a finished, plug-and-play retro console you can order today, costs less than the single programmable chip soldered to its own motherboard. The console is £216 including VAT. The bare Intel/Altera Cyclone V at its heart, bought one at a time from a distributor, runs closer to £290. The gap between those numbers is roughly £74, and inside it sits the entire strange economics of hobbyist silicon — plus most of the reason the MiSTer scene spent the better part of a decade living on a soldering bench instead of under a television.
Heber Ltd, a distinctly unglamorous industrial-electronics outfit in Aylesbury, England, spent 2025 turning that soldering-bench project into shrink-wrapped product. As of August 2026 there are three physical SKUs — a Digital console, an Analogue console, and a JAMMA arcade board that only just began shipping — with a handheld, the Multisystem 2 Pocket, in open development behind them. Not one of these devices ships with a single game. That is not a supply-chain failure. It is the legal foundation of the whole enterprise, and we will get there.
The Pitch: A Platform, Not a Console

The Multisystem 2's product page describes it in language that sounds mundane until you know the backstory: a custom-built system board with an integrated Cyclone V FPGA processor that comes ready-to-play with no additional hardware or add-on boards required. Translated out of marketing, that means Heber took the field-programmable gate array that classic MiSTer builds hang off a Terasic DE10-Nano development board and soldered it straight onto a purpose-designed 10-layer PCB, alongside the RAM, the USB hub, and the video hardware. There is no sandwich of stacked boards. There is one board.
A hardware platform, not a games machine
Heber is scrupulously clear that the Multisystem 2 is a platform for running MiSTer-based FPGA cores, software, and community scripts — not a console with a library. It ships with no ROMs, and Heber says so explicitly, for copyright reasons. Hackaday's review put the workflow in six words: “Just add some ROMs (legally, of course), and you're off.” The device reconstructs the original hardware in logic; the games are your problem, your dumps, and your legal exposure. It is, in the most literal sense, bring-your-own-content.
The one number that frames everything
Strip away the philosophy and one figure does the arguing: £216. That buys a fanless, plug-and-play machine that behaves like real Super Nintendo, Genesis, Neo Geo, and arcade hardware at the logic level, with sub-frame latency the software-emulation world still chases. Whether £216 is cheap or expensive depends entirely on what you compare it to — which is exactly why the chip-cost comparison later in this piece is so uncomfortable.
What Actually Shipped, and When
From a December 2024 reveal to August 2025 hardware
Time Extension carried the first real word of the Multisystem 2 in December 2024. A development-update video followed on 17 February 2025, showing the board in active bring-up with the feature set and expansion options roughed in. Pre-orders opened on 6 May 2025, and Heber targeted first-batch shipping for early August 2025 — a schedule it broadly hit, which in crowdfunded-adjacent hardware terms counts as a minor miracle.
Pre-orders, batches, and a numbered queue
The important nuance, and one a lot of coverage garbles, is that Heber never sold this thing off a shelf. It sells against a numbered fulfilment queue — batches of roughly a thousand units, dispatched in order. By early 2026 the order book had passed the 20,000 mark with more than 10,000 units fulfilled, which is demand, not shipments. When you read “17,000 units,” read “17,000 orders in a queue.” The distinction matters when you are deciding whether to wait.
What “in stock” means in August 2026
As of this writing, Heber's own shop lists the Digital model as “In stock — low stock level,” capped at two per customer, and the Analogue model as “In stock, ready to ship.” That is the closest the Multisystem 2 has come to genuine availability, and it still is not a walk-up purchase. The Spring 2026 goal of off-the-shelf stock has, in practice, slipped.

No More DE10-Nano Sandwich
How classic MiSTer is built
Traditional MiSTer is a stack. You buy a Terasic DE10-Nano — an educational FPGA dev board built around the same Cyclone V — then bolt on a 128MB SDRAM module, an I/O board, a USB hub, a fan, and a case, usually sourced from three different sellers and assembled with the help of a wiki and some patience. It works brilliantly and looks like a science-fair project. That assembly friction is precisely what kept MiSTer niche.
What Heber integrated
The Multisystem 2 collapses that stack onto one board. The Cyclone V is soldered down; the 128MB of SDRAM (Alliance) that MiSTer cores lean on for accurate memory timing is on-board; a separate 1GB of LPDDR (ISSI) feeds the ARM/Linux side. A powered seven-port USB 2.0 hub — four ports front, two rear, one internal — is built in. There is no fan; a heatsink and a thermally sane layout do the cooling. What you still have to supply
Integration is not inclusion. Out of the box you still provide a few things yourself:
- A microSD or full-size SD card (32GB and up) carrying the MiSTer distribution and your own ROMs.

Digital, Analogue, Arcade: The Line
Digital versus Analogue
The two consoles share a brain and differ only at the outputs. The £216 Digital model is HDMI-plus-direct-video-DAC and nothing else — the right pick if your display is an LCD or OLED. SNAC, Zaparoo, and the 50-way connector
The Analogue board carries the expansion hardware the enthusiasts actually fight over: a SNAC cartridge slot (Serial Native Accessory Converter) that lets original controllers and certain cartridge adapters talk to cores with essentially zero added latency, a 50-way dual-row future-expansion connector exposing unused DE10-Nano pins, internal I2C headers for OLEDs and NFC readers, and support for Zaparoo NFC game loading. This is the part of the platform that will still be growing in 2028.

The Chip Math That Breaks Brains
The console is cheaper than its own silicon
Return to the opening absurdity, now with part numbers. The Cyclone V on this board is a 5CSEBA6U23I7 — a 28nm device with roughly 110,000 logic elements and a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 clocked at 800MHz. Buy exactly one from a distributor such as Mouser and single-unit pricing sits around £290. Heber will sell you an entire finished console — chip included, plus RAM, a seven-port hub, a 10-layer PCB, a case, and a power switch with over-voltage and thermal protection — for £216. The company is, at retail, underwater on the headline component before it fits anything else, a reminder that “one-off distributor price” and “volume contract price” are different planets.
Against a roll-your-own DE10-Nano build
The other comparison is the DIY MiSTer it replaces. A bare DE10-Nano runs about $225 at retail (nearer $190 on the academic tier), and that is before RAM, an I/O board, a hub, a fan, and a case — a parts list that, fully assembled, lands in the same neighbourhood as a Multisystem 2 while looking considerably worse and taking an afternoon to build. Lon Seidman reported paying about $386 for his Multisystem 2 landed in the United States, shipping and tariffs included; the convenience premium over a self-build is, once you count your own time, roughly nothing.
Against the Analogue boxes
Then there is Analogue, the other name in consumer FPGA. Its Analogue Pocket is a handheld locked to Game Boy-family cartridges plus openFPGA cores — Engadget's review pegged it at $220 — while its Analogue 3D is a ~$250 living-room FPGA Nintendo 64. Those are gorgeous, closed, single-lineage appliances. The Multisystem 2 is an open, sprawling, hundreds-of-cores platform that will never match Analogue's fit and finish and never stops adding systems. Different religions.

From MiST to MiSTer to Multisystem
MiST, then MiSTer
The lineage matters, because the Multisystem 2 is the fourth act of a long play. It starts around 2013 with Till Harbaum's MiST, an FPGA board that recreated the Amiga and Atari ST. Heber entered in October 2021 with the original MiSTer Multisystem — a design collaboration between Heber Ltd, RMC Retro, and The Retro Collective, fronted by RMC's Neil Thomas. That first product was a carrier that dressed a DE10-Nano in a proper case with proper I/O, from roughly $300 for a board-only setup to $510-615 fully loaded. It was a big step toward consumer-friendliness, but the DE10-Nano was still in the box. The Multisystem 2 is the version that finally removes it.
Open hardware, July 2023
One detail that keeps the scene honest: Heber released the original Multisystem board design as open-source hardware in July 2023, publishing schematics, PCB files, and Gerbers on GitHub. That is an unusual thing for a company selling the same board to do, and it is the philosophical throughline — a commercial product built on, and giving back to, a community project. The tension between “polished consumer appliance” and “open, hackable platform” is the Multisystem's whole personality.
FPGA vs Emulation, One More Time
What FPGA actually buys you
An FPGA does not pretend to be old hardware the way a software emulator does; it becomes it, reconfiguring its logic gates into a functional replica of the original chips. The practical payoffs are low, deterministic input latency and cycle-level behaviour — the edge cases, the raster tricks, the timing-dependent bugs that games actually relied on. For CRT users chasing a lag-free, scanline-accurate image, this is the closest thing to original silicon short of original silicon.
What it does not buy you
It is not magic, and the Machine will not pretend otherwise. MiSTer's core library, while enormous, is bounded by what the community has reverse-engineered and what a Cyclone V can fit — which means roughly 16-bit-and-earlier consoles, arcade boards, and home computers. There is no PlayStation 2, no GameCube, no Dreamcast-and-up on this hardware. Hackaday's caveats stand: “the usual display inconsistencies and that eternal jungle of controller mappings.” FPGA solves latency; it does not solve fiddliness.
The software alternatives
For everything MiSTer cannot or will not do, software emulation is cheaper and broader. A Raspberry Pi running RetroPie or a mini-PC running Batocera will emulate hundreds more systems for a fraction of £216, at the cost of some latency and the occasional accuracy compromise. Handhelds like the Retroid Pocket line do the same in your palm. The honest framing: MiSTer is an accuracy instrument; those are convenience machines. Most people want the convenience machine.

Lon Seidman's March 2026 review is the most measured hands-on out there. He “paid about $386 for mine (including shipping and tariffs),” found the hardware “thermally balanced, maintaining stability even during intensive tasks,” and framed the whole exercise in one line the marketing department wishes it had written: the Multisystem 2 “bridges the gap between the technical flexibility of the original FPGA development boards and the convenience of a dedicated home console.” He also confirms the developer credit — “RMC's Neil and electronics manufacturer Heber Limited.”
Hackaday: out of the tinker cave
Hackaday's launch coverage nailed the significance. The Multisystem 2, it wrote, “finally gets the MiSTer experience out of the tinker cave,” and “you don't need to be a soldering wizard to use the thing.” Crucially for anyone with an existing setup, it “remains 100% compatible with the MiSTer software” while leaving room for “some additional future features” via that expansion hardware. This is not a fork of the project; it is a nicer front door to it.
Metal Game Solid: “my system of choice”
The most emphatic verdict comes from LSDowdle's hands-on at Metal Game Solid, who declared “the Multisystem 2 will be my system of choice for some time to come” and praised its SNAC implementation as “a much more elegant solution” than the alternatives. His one gripe is endearingly physical: the case is “pretty light and I kinda wish it was taller and had some lead weights in it.” When the harshest criticism is that a console is not heavy enough, the hardware is doing fine.
Setup Reality: The SD Card Does Everything
The card is the console
The Multisystem 2's brain may be soldered down, but its soul is on a removable SD card. MiSTer boots an ARM/Linux binary from that card, then loads FPGA cores (.rbf files) on demand as you pick systems from a menu. Your ROMs, your save states, your controller maps, and your arcade recipes all live in a fairly rigid folder layout on the same card. Get the layout right and the machine is boring in the best way; get it wrong and nothing shows up.
The community's one-button updater

The setup tax that survives all this integration is controller mapping and per-core display tuning — Hackaday's “eternal jungle.” Each core wants its inputs mapped once, and analogue-versus-digital video, scandoublers, and per-system aspect ratios all reward a fiddle. If you want to feed cores with original cartridges rather than files, this is also where the legality question lands squarely on you: dump your own carts with something like a Retrode and you stay on the right side of Hackaday's parenthetical.
The Pocket and the Arcade Are Next
The Arcade board ships now
The JAMMA Arcade, covered above at £323.99, is the near-term news: Heber lists shipping as beginning August 2026, which makes it the third Multisystem 2 form factor to reach customers inside eighteen months. For arcade operators and cabinet restorers, a single board that drops into a JAMMA harness and runs cycle-accurate arcade cores is a genuinely new option, and the five-pack bundle suggests Heber expects volume from that crowd.
The Pocket project
The one everyone actually wants is the Multisystem 2 Pocket, a MiSTer FPGA handheld that Heber and The Retro Collective launched as an open-development project on 21 May 2026. Current concept work — being narrowed by community vote as of mid-2026 — points to a roughly 4-inch high-resolution display, dual stereo speakers, dual analogue sticks, twin shoulder buttons, a curved ergonomic back, and removable “JOYSTIX” controls injection-moulded by Relay Industries. Target systems are the usual FPGA-friendly set: NES, Game Boy, Neo Geo, Mega Drive, PC Engine, and SNES.
Not the “Wide Boy”
A word of caution against the hype cycle: the widescreen, Darius-playing “Wide Boy” prototype that made the rounds is a display and core tech demo, explicitly not the planned handheld. Heber has been open that the Pocket is early. “Hopefully by end of this year,” the team says of 2026 — which, in hardware, is how you say 2027 without saying 2027.
Predictions: The Next 6–12 Months
Availability stays a queue
Prediction one: the numbered-queue model persists into 2027. Heber's “In stock — low” and two-per-customer caps on the Digital model, more than a year after launch, tell you demand still outruns batch supply. Genuine off-the-shelf, buy-five-at-once availability is unlikely before 2027; the Spring 2026 goal has already quietly slipped. Expect the Arcade board's August 2026 shipment to sell through fast.
The Pocket slips to 2027, and it won't be cheap
Prediction two: the Multisystem 2 Pocket does not ship in 2026. A device still in three-way concept voting mid-year, with injection tooling and battery engineering ahead of it, realistically lands in 2027. Prediction three: when it does, it lands north of the £216 Digital console — an LCD, batteries, modular controls, and moulded tooling do not come free, and I would not be surprised by a £250-300 sticker.
Prices hold; cores and expansion grow
Prediction four: console pricing holds or creeps up, not down. The Digital and Analogue prices have moved perhaps £12 in a year, and the same DRAM and component pressure squeezing the wider handheld market — the crunch that has pushed the consumer FPGA field and Retroid's lineup upward — argues against cuts. Prediction five: the interesting movement is in software and expansion — new and improved cores, plus community hardware hanging off the 50-way connector and I2C headers, with a dual-RAM option (LSDowdle's wish) a plausible enthusiast mod.
The Verdict
Who it's for
If you already know what SNAC stands for, own a CRT or a decent scaler, and have been eyeing a MiSTer build for years, the Multisystem 2 is the easiest yes in the FPGA hobby. The Analogue model at £264 is the connoisseur's pick; the £216 Digital is the correct default for anyone on a modern panel. You are buying accuracy, latency, and the end of the DE10-Nano parts hunt — and, absurdly, paying less than the chip costs alone.
Who should wait
If your goal is “play as many systems as possible for as little as possible,” this is the wrong tool, and you should buy a mini-PC or a Pi and move on — MiSTer stops at the 16-bit-ish era and asks for setup patience in return for its accuracy. If you specifically want a handheld, wait for the Pocket, or buy something that exists today; the Pocket is a project, not a product, until at least 2027.
The Machine's call
The Multisystem 2 is the moment MiSTer stopped being a project you build and became a console you buy — without betraying the open, bring-your-own-ROM ethos that made it worth building. That it retails for less than its own headline chip is either a triumph of volume economics or a quiet subsidy of the enthusiast scene by a company that clearly likes it. Either way, it is the most honest £216 in retro gaming. Bring your own games. Legally, of course.
