You asked for a comparison between the Retroid Pocket 6 and the Retroid Pocket G2. Buy the Retroid Pocket 6, because it is the only one of the two you can still purchase new, and because even when both were on sale side by side, the RP6 won on the things that decide a handheld's usable lifespan — GPU driver maturity, display refresh, battery capacity, and video-out — while losing only on things that do not matter (a point release of Android, a point release of Bluetooth). The G2 was never a bad device. It was a device with no room to stand.
Why compare a corpse
Three reasons. First, thousands of people bought a G2 during its five-month window and reasonably want to know what they are holding and whether to trade up. Second, the G2 is still the cleanest case study going for the difference between raw silicon and shipping performance — the two were within ten percent on benchmarks and a chasm apart in practice. Third, "which is the better buy right now" has a trivial answer (the one you can buy), but "which was the better device" is genuinely close, and the reasons it is close are the reasons you should care about drivers more than you care about gigahertz.

The three differences that are real
Only three rows in that table change how the device feels in your hands day to day. GPU driver maturity (the Adreno 740 has years of phone-ecosystem optimization; the Adreno A22 has months). Refresh rate (120Hz versus 60Hz, which matters for menus and light content and matters not at all for a locked-30fps GameCube game). Battery and cooling (6,000mAh with an active fan versus 5,000mAh passively cooled — the RP6 both holds more charge and sustains clocks longer). Everything downstream of the comparison traces back to those three.
The two inversions that are fake
The G2 wins exactly two rows, and both are traps for the unwary. It ships Android 15 to the RP6's Android 13, and Bluetooth 5.4 to the RP6's 5.3. Neither buys you anything you will notice. A newer Android build on a device with worse GPU drivers is a nicer-looking settings menu wrapped around a worse gaming experience, and the gap between BT 5.3 and 5.4 is a rounding error you will never feel through a controller or a pair of earbuds. This is where the comparison is decided, so I am going to slow down. Both of these are Qualcomm parts. They are not the same kind of Qualcomm part, and the difference in kind is the entire ballgame.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 2: the known quantity
The RP6 runs the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 (Qualcomm's internal SM8550, codename Kalama, built on TSMC's 4nm N4P). It is a 2023 flagship phone chip: one Cortex-X3 prime core at 3.2GHz, four Cortex-A715 performance cores at 2.8GHz, three Cortex-A510 efficiency cores at 2.0GHz, and an Adreno 740 GPU running around 680MHz with full Vulkan 1.3. It posts a Geekbench 6 single-core score of about 1,985. That number is roughly 69 percent higher than the Pocket 5's Snapdragon 865 — a real generational jump, and one I would not undersell.
But the raw score is not why the 8 Gen 2 wins. It wins because it spent two years inside millions of Android phones, which means its Adreno 740 has a mature, exhaustively debugged graphics driver stack — including the open-source Turnip Vulkan driver that the emulation community leans on to fix rendering glitches the stock drivers introduce. Established silicon is optimized silicon.
Snapdragon G2 Gen 2: the fresh silicon
The G2 runs the Snapdragon G2 Gen 2, part of Qualcomm's dedicated gaming-handheld G-series rather than its phone line. (Yes, the naming is a cruelty: the Retroid Pocket G2 runs the Snapdragon G2 Gen 2. The device is named after the chip family.) It is an octa-core Kryo design with a single "Gold+" prime core, clocks between roughly 1.9 and 2.8GHz, and pairs with an Adreno A22 GPU. On benchmarks it lands about 50 percent ahead of the old Snapdragon 865 and only around 10 percent behind the 8 Gen 2 — its GPU sits a mere 8 to 10 percent behind the Adreno 740. On silicon, this was a fair fight.
Here is the problem, and HandheldRank named it precisely: the G2 uses "a brand new, gaming-focused chip that almost nobody has access to yet." Fresh silicon means fresh, immature drivers. Why "newer" lost

The Adreno A22 is new enough that Turnip support is immature, so the very driver that fixes rendering on the RP6 can tank performance on the G2 — you trade glitches for a slideshow. That is the catch-22 in one sentence: the G2's raw GPU is only 8 to 10 percent behind the RP6's, but you cannot spend that raw performance because the drivers to unlock it do not exist yet. The apps that simply don't run

8-bit through Dreamcast: a tie nobody wins
Everything up to and including the sixth generation's easier cases runs flawlessly on both. NES, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy through GBA, PS1, N64, Dreamcast, and PSP are all full speed on either device — the RP6 handles Dreamcast, PSP, and PS1 at roughly 4x internal resolution, and Kupetsky measured the G2 running PSP at 4x as well. If your library stops at the Dreamcast, the two devices are indistinguishable in performance, and this comparison collapses to price and ergonomics. That is a genuinely large slice of retro gaming where the dead device was every bit the equal of the live one. PS2 and GameCube: the sweet spot
This is the tier both devices were built to sell, and it is where they are closest. Display, Battery, and Video-Out
The two devices share a screen size and resolution and diverge on everything that surrounds it. This is where the RP6's "premium" reputation is actually earned, and also where one of its advantages is quietly oversold.
120Hz vs 60Hz: real, but oversold
Both panels are 5.5-inch 1920×1080 AMOLEDs, and both are genuinely lovely — Saltalamacchia said the RP6's "5.5″ AMOLED display makes the device feel incredibly modern," and the G2's is the same class of panel at roughly 400ppi. The RP6 refreshes at 120Hz; the G2 at 60Hz. Here is the honest part: for emulation, that difference is smaller than the marketing implies. Retro content is locked to its original framerate — 30 or 60fps — so a 120Hz panel buys you smoother menus, smoother Android scrolling, and a nicer feel in the handful of native Android games that run above 60fps. It does not make your PS2 games play at double the framerate. 6,000 vs 5,000mAh
This one is not oversold. The RP6 carries a 6,000mAh battery with 27W fast charging; the G2 carries 5,000mAh with standard charging. Combined with the RP6's active fan — which lets it sustain clocks rather than throttling under load — the larger cell delivers real endurance: roughly 8 to 10 hours on light SNES and GBA work, 4 to 5 hours on demanding PS2 and GameCube, and 2.5 to 3 hours flat-out. The G2's smaller cell and passive cooling mean both shorter runtime and more thermal throttling on exactly the demanding content where you would want sustained performance. The RP6 is heavier (~320g versus 280g) and physically larger, and that extra 40 grams is where the battery and the fan live. It is a fair trade.
4K60 vs 1080p60 out

You will spend your time inside RetroArch and standalone emulators, not inside the Android settings app, and those emulators care about the driver stack underneath — where the RP6 wins decisively — not the version string on the About screen. This is the whole trap in miniature: the G2's one clean spec-sheet victory is over the thing that matters least.
LineageOS changes the math
And then, on 1 July 2026, the argument ended entirely. As 9to5Google reported, the RP6 gained official LineageOS support — LineageOS 23.2, based on Android 16. That is four full Android releases ahead of its stock Android 13, and two ahead of the G2's Android 15. What killed the G2
Through late 2025 and into 2026, LPDDR5X prices spiked hard as fabs shifted capacity toward the high-bandwidth memory that AI servers devour. Retroid absorbed what it could and then stopped being able to. On 2 March 2026 it raised the RP6 8GB by $15 to an effective $244 and discontinued the 12GB/256GB tier outright; Retroid's statement, via Android Authority, was blunt: "The recent surge in memory pricing has reached a level that we are unfortunately unable to absorb." SteamDeckHQ's Shawn Wilkins framed it as an industry event, not a Retroid one: "The increasingly difficult RAM shortage continues to impact hardware companies across the industry." Two weeks later, on 16 March 2026, the G2 itself was pulled, "temporarily discontinued" for the same reason, with Retroid promising to bring it back "when market conditions allow." GamesRadar's headline captured the mood: "Weeks after the Steam Deck disappeared, Retroid discontinues Pocket G2 'due to ongoing fluctuations in memory pricing'." Notebookcheck and Pocket Tactics corroborated it the same day. The 12GB RP6 later crept back in June 2026 — but as a 12GB/128GB model, storage quietly halved to hit the price. The lineup problem

Who Each One Is For
Enough post-mortem. Here is the practical matrix: who should buy the RP6, who should keep the G2 they already own, and who should walk away from both.
Buy the RP6 if…
Use case 1 — the sixth-gen completionist. You want PS2 and GameCube at 2x-3x native with headroom to spare, and you want that library to still run in three years. The RP6's Adreno 740 plus mature Turnip drivers is the safe long-term bet. HandheldRank's phrasing is exact: the RP6 is "the safer long-term bet if you care about Switch and PC emulation."
Use case 2 — the docked upscaler. You play on a 4K TV as often as handheld. The RP6's 4K60 DisplayPort output and the 12GB RAM tier's PC-emulation headroom make it the one to dock. As Russ at Retro Game Corps put it, "Even at $245 it's the most affordable Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 handheld on the market. The 12GB RAM model provides more headroom for PC gaming."
Use case 3 — the streamer. You want a thin client for Remote Play, Chiaki-ng, or Moonlight. Wi-Fi 7, the 6,000mAh battery, and 120Hz make the RP6 the better couch-streaming endpoint by a clear margin.
Use case 4 — the tinkerer. You intend to flash a custom ROM. The RP6's official LineageOS 23.2 (Android 16) path is a real, supported future the discontinued G2 cannot match.
Keep your G2 if…
Use case 5 — you already own one and mostly play PSP and PS2. Do not trade up out of anxiety. Kupetsky measured PSP at 4x and PS2 at 2.5x on the G2, and called it a device "let down only by the next handheld coming so soon" — not by its own performance. For a sub-Switch library it remains genuinely good, and the resale market for a discontinued device is not kind enough to make swapping worth it. Spend $54 on Miyoo-class hardware and pocket the difference. And whichever device you land on, source your games honestly: emulators themselves are settled law — Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. v. The recommendation
Buy the Retroid Pocket 6. This is not a close call in August 2026, and it would not have been a close call in February either. The RP6 wins on GPU driver maturity (the only performance metric that survives contact with a real game library), on display, on battery, on video-out, and on software future. It loses on two spec-sheet lines — Android version and a Bluetooth point release — that no human being will ever feel. At $244 it is, per Retro Game Corps, "the most affordable Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 handheld on the market," and RetroDodo scored it 8.4/10 even while grumbling that it is "slightly dull" and that "a $250 device should have something unique." Dull and reliable beats exciting and discontinued.
The asterisk
The G2 was not a bad handheld. That is the part the tidy verdict flattens. On silicon it was within ten percent of the RP6; on PSP and PS2 it was every bit as capable; on ergonomics it was smaller and lighter, which some hands prefer. It lost because it was born into an impossible neighborhood, priced $25 from its bigger sibling, running silicon nobody had drivers for, in the exact quarter that memory prices detonated. If you already own one, you own a good device — keep it, play PSP and PS2 on it, and ignore anyone telling you to panic-upgrade. Kupetsky was right that it was "let down only by the next handheld coming so soon."
The epitaph
Here is what the Pocket G2 leaves behind, and it is worth more than the device itself: proof that in emulation, the spec sheet is a liar. Newer Android, competitive silicon, lower price, smaller body — the G2 won the categories that photograph well and lost the one that matters, because a GPU is only as fast as the driver that speaks to it, and nobody had finished writing the G2's. The RP6 shipped older Android on a two-year-old chip and won precisely because two years is long enough to get the software right.
