Retroid does not sell a handheld. It sells a spreadsheet. By August 2026 the GoRetroid storefront lists a ladder of Android emulation machines that runs from roughly $139 to $244, and picking the wrong rung costs you either sixty dollars you did not need to spend or an entire tier of console emulation you thought you were buying. This is a comparison, not a coronation, but there is a winner, and the data is not subtle about who it is.
The complication is that the 2026 lineup was repriced twice in the same summer by forces that have nothing to do with retro gaming. A memory shortage the press has taken to calling RAMaggedon pushed component costs up across the industry, and Qualcomm followed with a chipset hike. Retroid absorbed what it could, passed on the rest, and quietly reshuffled which model ships with how much RAM. If you shopped in June and shop again today, the prices moved under your feet.

There is no single Retroid Pocket. That is the mental model to hold onto. You are not choosing between fundamentally different capabilities the way you would between a Miyoo and a Steam Deck. You are choosing between three chips (a Snapdragon 865, a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, and the 8 Gen 2's industrial cousin) wrapped in five or six different form factors at six different prices. Once you internalize that, the spreadsheet stops being intimidating and starts being solvable. RAMaggedon, explained

The Steam Deck OLED itself was hiked in May 2026. When the whole neighborhood raises rent, blaming one landlord misreads the market. The most telling data point is the Pocket G2: rather than ship it at a loss, Retroid discontinued it outright in March 2026, a move GamesRadar headlined as Retroid killing the G2 "due to ongoing fluctuations in memory pricing." What actually changed on July 15
Here is the part that matters if you are buying this week. On July 15, 2026, Retroid made 12GB/128GB the standard configuration for the Pocket 5 and Pocket Flip 2, replacing the old 8GB/128GB versions, and raised prices by $10. Per Notebookcheck, the Pocket 5 went from $199 to $209, the Snapdragon 865 Flip 2 from $209 to $219, and the Dimensity 1100 Flip 2 from $179 to $189.
Crucially, per Engadget, unfulfilled orders placed before the change were upgraded to the 12GB version at no extra charge, and Retroid ran a limited-time window where buyers of the 8GB models were bumped to 12GB for free. Android Authority's verdict on the trade was that "this is a ridiculously tiny increase for the amount of extra RAM you're getting," and they told readers plainly to take the offer. They are right. Four extra gigabytes of LPDDR for ten dollars, during a memory shortage, is the rare 2026 price move that favors the buyer. The RAM matters less for emulation (where 8GB was already plenty) than for the Winlator and GameNative crowd running Windows and Steam games in a compatibility layer, which is exactly where the extra headroom pays off.

Reading the silicon: 865 vs 8 Gen 2 vs QCS8550
Before the table, understand the three chips, because they are the whole argument. The Snapdragon 865 (in the Pocket 5, the Flip 2 Snapdragon edition, and the Mini V2) is a 2020 phone flagship: an Adreno 650 GPU, mature drivers polished by half a decade of Android app support, LPDDR4x memory, and enough grunt for everything up to comfortable GameCube and moderate PS2. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 (in the Pocket 6) is a 2022 flagship built on a 4nm process with an Adreno 740 clocked to 680MHz and faster LPDDR5X memory, and it is the single biggest performance line in the entire lineup. The QCS8550 in the Nova is Qualcomm's Dragonwing industrial variant of that same 8 Gen 2, with the 5G modem stripped out; Notebookcheck's Enrico Onawole described it precisely as "an IoT version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2." Netplay, save states, and shaders are effectively universal across the range because they are RetroArch features that ride on Android, not silicon features. Decoded against the lineup, the $244 rung is the Pocket 6 base model, the $179 rung is the Mini V2, the $199 area holds Flip 2 and Pocket 5 promotions, and the sub-$140 rung is the vertical Pocket Classic. The lineup, in other words, spans a hundred dollars from cheapest to flagship, which is exactly why choosing carefully matters: at these margins, ten or fifteen dollars buys a whole tier of capability, and a careless click buys you the wrong chip.
The pricing table
Launch prices are what the model debuted at; current prices are live as of August 22, 2026. The Pocket 6's 12GB tier is an asterisk: it launched at $279 with 256GB, was briefly discontinued in March 2026, and returned in June 2026 at $279 but with storage halved to 128GB, a detail Retro Game Corps flagged as "a bummer." The Amazon tax and where to buy
Buy direct from GoRetroid, not from a marketplace reseller, and expect the direct price to undercut Amazon. When Retroid cut prices in October 2025, Notebookcheck reported the cuts would not appear on Amazon, because, in the company's words, "the cost associated with selling on Amazon makes it more expensive on the retailer's website." That is Retroid telling you, on the record, that the marketplace listing is the worse deal.
The AliExpress and Amazon listings also breed clones and mislabeled RAM tiers; the storefront is the only place the configuration matches the box, and after RAMaggedon a mislabeled RAM tier is not a trivial mistake. Shipping from China means a wait of a couple of weeks and the occasional customs line item, but the price delta is real and documented, and the storefront is where the free-upgrade promotions land first. The one reason to pay the Amazon tax is speed or the return policy; if you value either over the fifteen-odd dollars, that is a legitimate trade, just make it with eyes open.
Performance: Benchmarks From 3 Angles
Synthetic: the Geekbench and GPU gap
Start with the number that anchors everything. In Geekbench 6 single-core, the Pocket 6's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 scores 1,985 against the Pocket 5's Snapdragon 865 at 1,176. That is a 69% single-core uplift, not the 50% figure that floats around undersourced comparison posts, and the GPU gap is wider still, with the Adreno 740 landing at roughly double the Adreno 650's throughput. Cross-device synthetic tables echo the spread: aggregated AnTuTu and 3DMark Wild Life Extreme runs put the Pocket 6 on the order of 80% and 180% ahead respectively.
Treat those synthetic percentages as ceiling figures. The 3DMark number in particular reflects sustained GPU torture that no emulator replicates, so the honest, felt improvement in day-to-day emulation is closer to the Geekbench single-core number, because most emulator hot loops are single-threaded and latency-bound. The now-dead G2, for the record, split the difference: its Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 landed around 1,780 single-core, faster than the 865 but behind the 8 Gen 2, which is part of why Retroid could let it die without leaving a hole. Emulation in practice: GameCube, PS2, Switch
Synthetic scores are an argument; frame rates are the verdict. RetroDodo's Brandon Saltalamacchia, who scored the Pocket 6 an 8.4/10, measured GameCube running at 3x native resolution and PlayStation 2 in the 1.5x-2x range, with God of War II pushed to roughly 2.5x. Notebookcheck separately documented the Pocket 6 running Batman: Arkham Asylum at a locked 60fps as a native Android port, and Retro Game Corps confirmed that even Rogue Squadron 2, historically an Android killer, runs at 720p on the chip.
For the 865 machines, the Notebookcheck coverage of the Dimensity Flip 2 (via Retro Game Corps) found "smooth PSP and GameCube emulation with some trade-offs," which is the honest summary of the entire 865 tier: it does the job, with the settings knob turned down a notch and the upscaling multiplier held at 2x rather than 3x. The Pocket 5, with a smaller 5,000mAh cell and (notably) no fast charging, measures around 3 hours 35 minutes under heavy emulation and about 4 hours 15 minutes looping a benchmark. The Nova, despite the same 8 Gen 2-class silicon, stretches to 6-8 hours on mixed PS2/GameCube loads and up to 20 hours on 8- and 16-bit systems, because a 4.5-inch 4:3 panel simply lights fewer pixels than a 5.5-inch 1080p one; push it into a demanding modern port like Skyrim and it collapses to about 2.5 hours, which tells you exactly where its comfort zone ends. GameCube, Wii, PS2: the 8 Gen 2 line
This is where the lineup splits, and it is the only split that justifies the price ladder. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 machines (Pocket 6 and Nova) run GameCube at 3x native, including notoriously demanding titles like F-Zero GX, the canonical hardest GameCube game to emulate and the one every reviewer uses as a torture test. Wii is practical (Super Mario Galaxy, Xenoblade Chronicles, Donkey Kong Country Returns), and PS2 upscales cleanly.
The Nova is specifically praised for pushing PS2 further than its widescreen sibling because its lower-resolution 4:3 target frees up fill rate; Saltalamacchia reported that on the Nova he "could natively scale some PS2 games by 3 or 4x with filters, and frame rates wouldn't drop at all," naming Midnight Club 3 at 3x. This tier, GameCube and PS2 in your pocket, is the entire reason to buy a Retroid instead of a $54 Miyoo, and it is the tier you are actually paying the premium for.
Switch and beyond: the honest limits
Switch emulation is the ragged edge, and no Retroid handles it as a solved problem. The Pocket 6 is the best of the bunch because, as HandheldRank put it comparing it to the dead G2, "the RP6 wins here, and it's not close. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has years of driver optimization from the Android phone ecosystem (Turnip Drivers)." Even so, expect select titles rather than a full library, with crashes, shader-compilation stutter, and per-game settings the norm rather than the exception.
Above Switch, the story ends flatly. PS3 via RPCS3 and Xbox 360 emulation are slideshows on all of these, and no amount of forum wizardry changes that on mobile silicon. The same HandheldRank coverage was refreshingly blunt about the non-emulation limits too, noting that native heavy hitters are simply out: "Netflix games? Nope. Fortnite? Nope." Anyone promising you smooth Switch, PS3, or the latest anti-cheat-laden battle royale on a $244 handheld is selling something. Which Retroid Fits Which Player
The couch enthusiast and the commuter
The couch/TV-out player wants the Pocket 6. Its USB-C 3.1 port carries DisplayPort out at up to 4K60, its Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has the headroom to upscale GameCube and PS2 to something respectable on a television rather than a 5.5-inch panel, and its 120Hz display, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 5.3 make pairing a controller and casting a genuine console-lite experience. Docked to a TV with an 8BitDo pad, it is the closest thing in the range to a living-room emulation box.
The daily commuter is better served by the Pocket 5 or, for maximum pocketability, the Mini V2. The Pocket 5's 5.5-inch AMOLED is the best screen-per-dollar in the range, and Retro Handhelds' Andrew was not exaggerating when he wrote "this screen is SO GOOD, especially for a handheld at this price point." He also reported zero wrist fatigue over long sessions, which matters more on a train than any benchmark. For a coat pocket rather than a bag, the 3.92-inch Mini V2 trades battery and screen size for genuine one-hand portability at 215 grams.
The 4:3 purist and the clamshell traveler
The 4:3 purist (the player whose heart lives in the pre-widescreen era of arcade boards, NES, SNES, PS1, and squarer PS2 games) should buy the Nova and nothing else. Its 4.5-inch 1280x960 panel displays those systems at native aspect with no letterboxing and no wasted glass, its tuned CRT beam shaders are built for that exact geometry, and its 8 Gen 2-class chip means the 4:3 target frees up enormous upscaling headroom. For this specific player, the Nova is not a compromise device; it is the ideal one.
The clamshell traveler who wants a device that folds shut, protects its own screen from keys and grit, and evokes a DS should take the Flip 2. It carries a 500-nit AMOLED, Hall sticks, and USB-C DisplayPort output, and it comes in two flavors: choose the Snapdragon 865 edition at $219 if you care about PS2 and the odd Switch title, or save thirty dollars with the Dimensity 1100 edition at $189 if your ceiling is GameCube and below. The clamshell adds a little bulk and a hinge that will see wear over years, but for a device that lives in a bag and gets tossed around, the folding screen protection is a real, unglamorous benefit.
The budget buyer and the tinkerer
The budget buyer whose ceiling is genuinely PS1 and handhelds should look at the vertical Pocket Classic from around $139, which RetroDodo rates as one of the better vertical Android handhelds, or better yet a Miyoo for a third of the price. Spending $244 to play games that ran fine on a 2004 console is a decision the data does not support.

The two 8 Gen 2 machines are the only ones that meaningfully move the emulation ceiling, and each has a clear personality. The Pocket 6 is the generalist: biggest battery, DisplayPort out, the widest software compatibility, the newest connectivity, and the fastest silicon at the lowest price it is sold at anywhere. Its knock, per Saltalamacchia, is that "Retroid have played it too safe to turn heads"; it is a $250-class device with no fingerprint sensor and no signature feature, competent to the point of dullness, which is a strange thing to hold against a tool that does its job.
The Nova is the specialist: a display purpose-built for 4:3 that Saltalamacchia called the best 4:3 screen he has seen on a handheld, at the cost of being the wrong shape for widescreen PSP, Dreamcast, and modern Android games, which sit letterboxed on that square panel. Buy the Nova for what it is exceptional at, not as an all-rounder, and it will delight you; buy it expecting a widescreen device and you will resent the black bars.
The value tier: Pocket 5, Flip 2, Mini V2
The three 865 machines compete on price and form factor rather than raw power. The Pocket 5 is the value benchmark: flagship-grade AMOLED, Hall sticks with analog triggers, Linux support, and a $209 price that undercuts the flagship by $35 while giving up only the 8 Gen 2's headroom. The Flip 2 is the same class of guts in a protective clamshell for those who prioritize durability and DS nostalgia. The Mini V2 is the shrink-ray version for pockets, paying for its size in a smaller 4,000mAh battery and a single 6GB RAM tier.
The recurring criticism of all three is not the hardware but the company they keep; as HandheldRank's Phil Retro said of the Pocket 5, "the problem isn't the device; it's the neighborhood it lives in." An 865 in 2026 is a fine chip surrounded by 8 Gen 2 alternatives at close prices, and that context, not any flaw in the silicon, is what pushes the value tier below the power tier in any honest ranking.
