A 5.5-inch 1080p AMOLED panel, a Snapdragon 865, Hall-effect sticks, and a $199 price that undercut everything with a comparable screen. It was, for about a year, the easy recommendation — the device you handed a friend when they asked which one to get and you did not want to write three paragraphs about it.
The Retroid Pocket 6 is the sequel, and on paper it is the RP5 with every boring shortcoming corrected: a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, a 120Hz refresh rate, a larger battery, 27W charging, Wi-Fi 7, and a USB-C port rated to drive a 4K monitor. By every spec that matters, it is the better machine. The problem — and this review is, in the end, mostly about the problem — is that better machine and the one you should buy stopped being the same sentence around March 2026, when a global memory-price crunch quietly rewrote the price tags on both.

That last clause is the entire retro-handheld business model. These devices are, almost without exception, phone silicon that missed the phone cycle, repackaged with sticks and a cooling solution and Android. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 shipped in premium phones in late 2022. Putting it in a $244 handheld in 2026 is not cutting-edge; it is arbitrage, and arbitrage is exactly what you want as a buyer. The deltas that don't

Wi-Fi 7 versus Wi-Fi 6 is meaningless for a device whose most bandwidth-hungry task is downloading a firmware update; you will never saturate Wi-Fi 6 streaming a Moonlight session, let alone Wi-Fi 7. Bluetooth 5.3 over 5.1 changes nothing you will perceive. The 4K@60 video-out is real but niche — and note the RP5 already does DisplayPort out, so this is a resolution ceiling most buyers will never approach. And both devices run Android 13, the same OS, which quietly tells you that Retroid's software team did not have to reinvent anything. The Silicon: 865 vs 8 Gen 2

LPDDR4x vs LPDDR5x, and why RAM speed matters here
Everyone fixates on core clocks and forgets memory. The RP5 pairs its 865 with 8GB of LPDDR4x at 2133MHz; the RP6 moves to LPDDR5x, which is not a marketing letter but a meaningful bandwidth jump. Emulators — especially PS2 and GameCube cores doing 2x-3x internal upscaling — are hungry for memory bandwidth, and starving a fast GPU of it is how you get stutter that no clock speed fixes. 550 nits vs 400, and the sunlight problem

The RP6 carries a 6,000mAh cell against the RP5's 5,000mAh — a 20% larger battery that, in testing, delivers roughly 17% more runtime: about 6.0 hours versus 5.0 hours of mixed emulation. The quieter upgrade is charging. The RP6 supports 27W fast charging, with measured draw of 25-26W at the wall — a real improvement over the RP5's unremarkable standard charging. In practice this changes behavior: a 6,000mAh cell that charges at 27W is a device you top up in the twenty minutes before you leave, rather than one you remember to plug in the night before and resent when you forget. It is a small thing that compounds daily. The RP5's slower charging is not a dealbreaker, but it is the kind of friction you only appreciate is gone once it is.
40 grams and 1.6 millimeters
Physics does not give you a bigger battery and active cooling for free. The RP6 weighs 304-320g depending on whose scale you trust, versus the RP5's 280g — call it 24 to 40 grams heavier. Its footprint grows to 205.5 x 80.5 x 17.2mm from the RP5's 199.2 x 78.5 x 15.6mm, so it is fractionally taller, wider, and 1.6mm thicker. In the hand, the RP6 feels marginally more substantial; whether that reads as "premium heft" or "my wrists notice after two hours" depends entirely on your hands. For most adults it is a non-issue. For the pocket-portability crowd, it is a tick in the RP5's column — one of the very few the older device still holds.
What Each One Actually Emulates
The tier both machines share
Let us dispense with the systems where this comparison does not exist. Through the PlayStation 1, PSP, Nintendo 64, and Sega Dreamcast, the two devices are functionally identical. Everyone asks about Nintendo Switch emulation, so let us answer it precisely and then talk about the law, because The Machine knows the law. On the RP6, Switch emulation is possible to a degree; on the RP5's 865, it is the weakest link in the lineup. The important distinction — the one that separates a felony-adjacent hobby from a settled point of American law — is that emulators themselves are legal. The AYN Odin 2 Portal also runs a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 with an Adreno 740, but wraps it in a larger 7.0-inch 1080p AMOLED at 120Hz and a huge 8,000mAh battery. It launched around $329 and currently sells for about $259 on sale — $15 more than the RP6 for a bigger screen and a third more battery capacity. The trade is size and pocketability: the Odin 2 Portal is a two-handed living-room device that will not disappear into a jacket. If raw emulation ceiling is all you care about and portability is negotiable, it is the RP6's most serious threat, and the price gap is narrow enough to make it a real decision.
The in-house threat: Retroid Pocket Nova
Retroid's own Pocket Nova is the interesting curveball — a $229 handheld built on the Qualcomm QCS8550 (a Dragonwing-branded 8 Gen 2 with the phone modem stripped out) and the same Adreno 740, but wrapped around a 4.5-inch 1280x960 4:3 OLED. That aspect ratio is a deliberate provocation: 4:3 is the native shape of nearly every pre-sixth-generation console, so a Game Boy Advance, SNES, or PS1 game fills the panel with no letterboxing. The Nova gives you the RP6's performance class for $15 less, in a shape optimized for the exact retro tier where both share identical power. It ships in late July 2026, and it may quietly cannibalize the RP6 for the sprite-art purist.
The little one: Pocket Mini V2
At the bottom of the family sits the Pocket Mini V2, which — importantly — does not use the 8 Gen 2. It runs the same Snapdragon 865 as the RP5, in a 3.92-inch 1240x1080 OLED body for $179. The casual, on the couch
You want to play Advance Wars or Chrono Trigger for forty minutes before bed. Verdict: the RP5 is all you need, and the RP6 is overkill. A GBA or SNES game does not tax the 865 in any measurable way; both devices run it flawlessly, both OLED panels make the pixel art glow, and the only difference you will perceive is the RP6's slightly smoother menus. For the pure casual, the $45 buys nothing. Buy the cheaper device, or buy the RP6 for the battery and the screen if you simply want the nicer object — but do it eyes-open, knowing the silicon is asleep.
The completionist, 120 hours deep
You are grinding a full playthrough of a GameCube RPG — Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, say, or Tales of Symphonia — and you want it upscaled, stable, and comfortable across a hundred-plus hours. Verdict: the RP6, decisively. This is the tier where the 865 stutters and the 8 Gen 2 sails. The completionist plays the demanding sixth-generation library for dozens of hours at a stretch, exactly where the RP6's GPU headroom and larger battery compound into a materially better experience. If you finish games rather than sample them, and those games are GameCube or PS2, the RP6 is the tool.
The speedrunner, counting frames
You care about input latency and frame timing because a dropped input costs you a run. Verdict: the RP6, on latency; both, on accuracy. Emulation is a poor foundation for serious competitive speedrunning — accuracy varies by core and load-state timing is not console-authentic — but for practice and casual runs, the RP6's 120Hz panel and faster silicon shave real milliseconds off display and processing lag. Co-op, two controllers, one screen
You want to hand a friend a Bluetooth controller, cast the device to the TV, and play Mario Kart: Double Dash or Streets of Rage. Verdict: the RP6, for the video-out. This is where the RP6's 4K@60 DisplayPort output and Bluetooth 5.3 pull ahead — cleaner TV output, and the horsepower to hold a stable framerate while driving an external display, which is a heavier load than handheld play. The RP5 can do it via its DisplayPort alt mode, but the RP6 is built for it. For the couch-multiplayer household, the newer device is the better host.
Mobile, in a jacket pocket
You play on trains, planes, and in the ten-minute gaps of a day, and the device lives in a coat pocket. Verdict: a genuine split. The RP6's 6,000mAh battery and 27W charging are the mobile-friendliest specs on paper — six hours of runtime and a fast top-up before you leave. But it is also 40 grams heavier and 1.6mm thicker, and if "disappears into a pocket" is your priority over "runs GameCube," the RP5 — or the smaller Pocket Mini V2 — wins on portability. Buy the Pocket 6 if...

Buy neither if: your heart is set on the biggest screen (the AYN Odin 2 Portal's 7-inch panel and 8,000mAh battery want a word), on 4:3-native sprite gaming (the $229 Pocket Nova is purpose-built for it), or on hardware-accurate FPGA play rather than software emulation (that is a different, deeper hobby).
