The Pocket 6 is not competing with the G2 on price, because the G2 has no price — it has a last known price. 7. You need PS3, Xbox 360, or high-end PC emulation. Both devices are sixth-generation-and-earlier machines. RPCS3 is a slideshow on either. Say you already own a G2 — bought at launch, before the axe — and you are moving up to a Pocket 6. Or you are coming from a Pocket 5. Because both run Android and both take a microSD card, this is one of the least painful migrations in the hobby, provided you respect a couple of format gotchas.

What Transfers Cleanly

ROMs are just files; they move verbatim. Battery saves (.srm and equivalents) are portable across devices running the same core. The Shared Compromises

Both devices are sixth-generation-and-earlier machines dressed in flagship silicon — do not expect PS3 or 360. Both were casualties, in different degrees, of the same 2026 RAM crunch. And both carry Retroid's chronic weakness: a poor track record on software updates, which is precisely why the LineageOS community stepping in for the Pocket 6 matters so much. The G2, dead, will get no such rescue from Retroid; whether the LineageOS team backports to it is the community's call, not the company's.

Connectix built a PlayStation emulator, the Virtual Game Station, and reverse-engineered Sony's BIOS to do it. The Ninth Circuit found the intermediate copying involved was fair use, calling the resulting product "modestly transformative." That ruling is a large part of why the entire emulation-handheld industry — Retroid included — exists in the open rather than in the shadows. The emulator is fine. The BIOS and the game images are on you.

Dump Your Own

The practical upshot, and the reason our migration section told you to keep your cartridges: dump the games you own. It is the position that needs no lawyer. A cart dumper pulls both the ROM and the on-cartridge battery save, which is also the cleanest way to preserve decades-old saves before the batteries finally die — a genuine, quiet catastrophe that is happening to retro hardware right now.

The Verdict: Buy the Survivor

We started by admitting this comparison is half a séance. Time to say what the data actually recommends.

The Recommendation

Buy the Retroid Pocket 6, 8GB/128GB, at $244. The reasoning is not close. It is the most affordable Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 handheld on the market (Russ, Retro Game Corps). It wins the emulation contests that separate the two devices — Switch, driver-dependent titles, big Android games — "and it's not close" (HandheldRank). It has the better screen refresh, the bigger battery with fast charging, 4K output, and now an official LineageOS path that outruns Retroid's own patchy update history. And, decisively, it is the one you can actually purchase. A $219 device you cannot buy loses to a $244 device you can, every time.

The Caveat (There's Always a Caveat)

The G2 was never a bad handheld, and it deserves to be remembered as more than a cautionary tale. On raw GPU it sat 8–10% behind the 6; on PS2 and PSP it was excellent; it was lighter, smaller, quieter, and newer in software. It lost because its brand-new chip lacked mature drivers and because the RAM market killed the cheap devices first — not because it was outclassed on silicon. If you find one used, cheap, and you only ever intend to run sixth-generation-and-earlier games, buying it is defensible. Just go in knowing you are buying an orphan.

Where This Leaves the Lineup

The most honest thing about this comparison is what it reveals: Retroid's 2026 was defined less by ambition than by a memory-price crisis that forced hard cuts, and by a company that, in Saltalamacchia's phrase, "played it too safe to turn heads." The Pocket 6 is a very good, slightly dull handheld that wins by being finished and available. The G2 is a genuinely interesting device that the market strangled in its crib. If neither quite fits, the same crisis makes the older Pocket 5 — Retroid's own recommended fallback — look better than it has any right to, and the newer Nova and the Odin 2 Portal are both worth a look. No. Retroid discontinued it on March 16, 2026, citing "ongoing fluctuations in memory pricing," and the listing sold out within minutes. New units are used-market only, and Retroid itself now points buyers at the Pocket 5 as a fallback.
Is the Pocket 6 or the G2 faster?
The Pocket 6's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 scores roughly 1,985 in Geekbench 6 single-core versus the G2's ~1,780. On raw GPU the gap is only 8–10%, but the RP6's mature Turnip Vulkan drivers widen the real-world lead sharply, especially in Switch emulation.
How much did each one actually cost?
The Pocket 6 8GB/128GB is an effective $244 (listed $249) after the March 2, 2026 hike, with a 12GB tier at $279. The G2 launched at $199 preorder / $219 retail before it was discontinued — so "the cheaper G2" is a dead SKU, not a live bargain.
Why does the G2 have a newer Android version but still lose?
The G2 ships Android 15 to the RP6's Android 13, but its brand-new Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 has immature GPU drivers, so some mainstream apps (Fortnite, Netflix games) won't run and demanding emulators stutter. The RP6 also now officially supports LineageOS 23.2, which is built on Android 16.
Should I buy a used G2 instead of the Pocket 6?
