The short answer
Brandon Saltalamacchia at RetroDodo scored the Pocket 6 an 8.4 out of 10 and headlined his review "A Perfect, Yet Slightly Dull Android Handheld." That two-word verdict — perfect, dull — is the whole device. It does everything right and surprises you with nothing. In 2026, after the year the handheld market has had, boring competence is a feature. The RP6 is the safe pick, the value pick, and the "I do not want to think about this anymore" pick, all at once. The runners-up each have a specific reason you might choose them, and I will lay those out honestly, but none of them dislodges the Pocket 6 from the top of the list.

It ships with 8GB of LPDDR5X and 128GB of UFS 3.1 storage, expandable via microSD. The screen is a 5.5-inch 1920x1080 AMOLED at 120Hz. Battery is 6000mAh with 27W charging, connectivity is Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.3, and USB-C does DisplayPort out at 4K60. It weighs roughly 320g (some listings say 304g), runs Android 13 out of the box, and lets you choose a symmetrical stick-top layout or a D-pad-top layout at checkout. It is, per Saltalamacchia, a device that "packs some serious power in a very small formfactor."
The Pocket 5, the value predecessor
The 2024 Pocket 5 is what the Pocket 6 replaces, and it is far from obsolete. It runs a Snapdragon 865 with an Adreno 650, 8GB of LPDDR4x (not LPDDR5 — the listings are clear on this), 128GB of UFS 3.1, and a 5.5-inch 1080p OLED at 60Hz. Battery is 5000mAh with no fast charging, wireless is Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1, and it weighs 280g. It launched at $199. As Phil Retro put it at HandheldRank, "In a vacuum, the Pocket 5 is still a fantastic gaming machine" — the problem, he added, "isn't the device; it's the neighborhood it lives in." The G2, the casualty

The outsider is Ayn's Odin 2 Portal: the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, wrapped around a lavish 7-inch 1080p 120Hz OLED, up to 16GB of LPDDR5X, UFS 4.0 storage, and a colossal 8000mAh battery. Its base 8GB model was cut to $249 in a July 2026 "Portal event" clearance — and that base config is now listed as discontinued while stocks last, topping out near $479 for the 16GB/1TB MAX. It is the RP6's most direct rival, and the fact that its cheap tier is also evaporating tells you everything about 2026.

The G2 casualty
Two weeks later, on March 16, 2026, Retroid discontinued the G2 outright, citing — in the phrasing GamesRadar reproduced verbatim — "ongoing fluctuations in memory pricing." Follow the wreckage. The G2 is gone. The RP6's 12GB is gone and came back mutated. The RP5 got a forced RAM bump and a price rise. The Odin 2 Portal's base model is on clearance. What is left standing, proven, reviewed, and in stock, is the Pocket 6 8GB at $244. What you actually pay
Ignore the sticker games and the effective number for the Pocket 6 is $244 for 8GB/128GB. Russ at Retro Game Corps did the market math on the same model: "Even at $245 it's the most affordable Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 handheld on the market. That is the crux — the cheapest way into an 8 Gen 2, with the one genuinely regrettable footnote being the loss of the roomier RAM tier.
The 12GB question
Do you need 12GB? For pure retro emulation up through the sixth console generation, no — 8GB is plenty, and I have never seen a PS2 or GameCube core come close to exhausting it. Where the extra RAM matters is native Android gaming, heavy multitasking, and future-proofing against Switch and Android titles that keep bloating. Short version — the generational leap over the Pocket 5 is real and large, the leap over the G2 is smaller than the spec sheet suggests, and the whole thing is gated by GPU drivers in ways that reward the boring, mature chip.

The driver catch-22

The law, briefly
Since The Machine is contractually obligated to mention it: emulation itself is legal, and has been settled law in the United States for a quarter century. In Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. v. 2. The couch marathoner
You play in long sessions on the sofa or on a plane, screen size and battery matter more than pocketability, and you might dock it to a TV. Odin 2 Portal, $249 while it lasts. The 7-inch OLED is more immersive, the 8000mAh battery outlasts everything else here, and UFS 4.0 loads faster. You pay for it in bulk and in the anxiety that the base model is being cleared out — buy now or not at all.
3. The budget-first buyer
You want real GameCube and PS2 capability but $244 is a stretch. Pocket 5, ~$199–209. You mostly play GameCube, PS2, and pre-widescreen consoles, and you resent black bars on a 16:9 panel. Pocket Nova, $229 — if you accept the risk. Its 4.5-inch 1280x960 4:3 screen fills the frame with these libraries, and Lawrence Bonk at Engadget called the format "a great fit for PS2 and GameCube games," adding that with the Nova "the best part, however, is the price." The catch: it is unreviewed as of late July 2026. You are buying on faith in the QCS8550 and Retroid's track record.
5. The "why not a real PC" buyer
You want Switch emulation that actually works, PC games, and a desktop-class library, and you have the budget. Steam Deck OLED, $789.
