Retroid announced the Pocket 6 and the Pocket G2 within twenty-four hours of each other at the end of October 2025. Two handhelds, two price points, one buyer. It looked like a lineup. It turned out to be a fork in the road, and one of the two paths dead-ends in a Sold Out banner.

The Pocket 6 is a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 machine that currently sells for $244. The Pocket G2 was a cheaper, smaller Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 machine that sold for $219 until Retroid pulled it from the store on March 16, 2026, citing the same global memory-price spike that has been mugging every handheld maker on the planet. So this comparison has an unusual shape. It is a head-to-head between a product you can buy and a product you cannot. We are going to treat it seriously anyway, because the G2 is not vaporware. It shipped, it was reviewed, people own it, and the reasons it lost are more interesting than the fact that it is gone.

The Short Version

The one-sentence answer

Buy the Retroid Pocket 6. Not because it humiliates the G2 on a spec sheet, because it does not, but because it is the one of the two that Retroid still sells, it carries the mature graphics drivers that emulation actually depends on, and it is, per Russ at Retro Game Corps, the most affordable Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 handheld on the market. What actually happened

Both devices went up for pre-order in the last week of October 2025, the Pocket 6 on the 27th and the G2 on the 28th. The G2 undercut the 6 by twenty dollars and traded away raw power, the 120Hz panel, active cooling, and a chunk of battery to get there. For roughly four and a half months it was a legitimate value pick. Then the DRAM market went vertical as fabs pivoted wafer capacity toward high-bandwidth memory for AI servers, LPDDR5X contract prices spiked, and Retroid did the arithmetic. On March 2 it raised the Pocket 6's price and discontinued the 12GB model. Two weeks later, on March 16, it discontinued the G2 outright.

The differences were a question of how much headroom you were willing to pay for.

Two different bets on the same buyer

The Pocket 6 bet that buyers would pay for overhead. A note on what these things legally do

Both machines are, at bottom, emulator boxes running open-source software on Android. Running an emulator is legal, and has been settled law in the United States for a quarter century. In Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. v. Connectix Corp., 203 F.3d 596 (9th Cir. 2000), the Ninth Circuit held that Connectix's PlayStation emulator, the Virtual Game Station, was modestly transformative and protected, even though producing it required intermediate copying of Sony's BIOS. Where the RP6 pulls ahead

Its Adreno 740 is faster than the G2's graphics part, its 120Hz panel doubles the frame ceiling for the handful of things that can hit it, its 6000mAh battery is a fifth larger, and, critically, it has a fan. A fan is not a luxury on a 4nm flagship SoC pushed to emulate a PlayStation 2 for two hours; it is the difference between holding peak clocks and thermal-throttling into a stutter fest. The 6 also carries USB-C 3.1 with DisplayPort output at 4K60, versus the G2's 1080p60 ceiling, which makes it the only one of the two you would seriously dock to a television.

Where the G2 was actually newer

Give the dead its due. The G2 shipped on Android 15 while the Pocket 6 shipped on Android 13, and it carried Bluetooth 5.4 against the 6's 5.3. It is smaller in every dimension, thinner by 1.6mm, and 40 grams lighter, which your wrists notice on hour three of a JRPG. It is silent, because passive cooling makes no noise. The March moves

Retroid responded in two steps. On March 2, 2026 it raised the Pocket 6's 8GB price and discontinued the 12GB/256GB SKU, with the company stating, via Notebookcheck and Android Authority, that the recent surge in memory pricing has reached a level that we are unfortunately unable to absorb. Then, on March 16 at 9PM EDT, it discontinued the Pocket G2 entirely. The listing read Sold Out within minutes. The company framed it as temporary, discontinued due to ongoing fluctuations in memory pricing, promising to bring it back when market conditions allow, and pointed buyers toward the Pocket 5 in the meantime. GamesRadar summed the timing up with the headline of the season: Weeks after the Steam Deck disappeared, Retroid discontinues Pocket G2 due to ongoing fluctuations in memory pricing. As of August 2026, per Android Authority, Pocket Tactics, and Notebookcheck, it has not come back.

The device that never fit

Here is the part that stings if you liked the G2: the RAM crisis pulled the trigger, but the gun had been loaded by positioning. Retroid did not discontinue the Pocket 6, which uses more expensive memory, and it did not discontinue the Pocket 5. It discontinued the model that had the least reason to exist once margins tightened. Synthetic numbers

Start with Geekbench 6 single-core, because it frames everything else. The Pocket 6 lands around 1,985. The Pocket G2 lands around 1,780. For reference, the older Pocket 5's Snapdragon 865 scores roughly 1,176, so the 6 is about 69 percent faster than the 5 and the G2 is about 50 percent faster than the 5. Put the two current contenders side by side and the 6 leads the G2 by roughly eleven to twelve percent on the CPU. Why raw GPU is not the whole story

The moving target

The Pocket 6 launched at $229 for the base model and rose to an effective $244 (the store lists $249) after the March 2 hike. The Gadgeteer confirmed the new floor in a June 12 piece flatly titled Retroid Pocket 6 Is Now $244, Four Months In. The 12GB version's story is its own soap opera: discontinued in March, then returned in June as a 12GB/128GB "stick-top" variant with asymmetrical analog sticks at $279, the extra RAM bought back by halving the storage. The G2, by contrast, has exactly one price in the present tense: unavailable.

What the G2's price bought you

At $219, and briefly at a $199 launch window, the G2 was the cheapest way into a 5.5-inch 1080p AMOLED handheld with Hall sticks. That is a genuinely good deal in the abstract. But value is only value if you can transact it. Russ at Retro Game Corps captured why the surviving device still holds up on price: Even at $245 it's the most affordable Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 handheld on the market. The 12GB RAM model provides more headroom for PC gaming, and it's a bummer that it's discontinued. He was mourning the 12GB Pocket 6 there, but the sentiment ports directly to the G2: a bummer that it's discontinued, and a $25 saving means nothing on a product with no buy button.

Which One For Your Use Case

If you emulate Switch or PC games

Buy the Pocket 6, and it is not a close call. This is the scenario the driver catch-22 was built to decide. Switch emulation lives and dies on Turnip driver maturity, and the Pocket 6's Adreno 740 has it while the G2's Adreno A22 does not. HandheldRank's not close was about exactly this workload. Buy the Pocket 6. The honest summary

Saltalamacchia's verdict on the Pocket 6 was A Perfect, Yet Slightly Dull Android Handheld, complaining that Retroid have played it too safe to turn heads and that a $250 device should have something unique, while conceding it packs some serious power in a very small formfactor and that a 5.5-inch AMOLED display makes the device feel incredibly modern. That is the correct read: the 6 is competent rather than exciting. The G2's reviewers were harsher about its reason to exist. Ban at Retro Handhelds asked and answered the buying question directly: If it were my money, would I buy the G2? No. Kupetsky liked the hardware but noted it was let down only by the next handheld coming so soon. Both, in hindsight, were describing a device the market had no room for.

Migrating From a G2 (or Anything Else)

The backup

Because both handhelds run Android, moving from a G2 (or a Pocket 5, or almost any Android handheld) to a Pocket 6 is refreshingly boring. The recommendation

The Retroid Pocket 6 wins, and the reasoning is layered rather than lopsided. On a cold spec sheet the two are close: the G2 is within roughly ten percent on silicon, ships newer Android and Bluetooth, and weighs less. But emulation is decided by driver maturity, not benchmark bars, and the Pocket 6's two-year-proven Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has the Turnip drivers and app compatibility that the G2's brand-new Adreno A22 simply lacks. Add the 120Hz panel, the active fan, the larger battery, and 4K60 video out, and the 6 is the more capable machine on every axis that involves running something demanding. Then remember the tiebreaker that ends the argument: you can buy a Pocket 6 for $244, and you cannot buy a G2 at any price.

If you cannot or will not buy an RP6

If $244 is too much, or you specifically want the small-and-silent profile the G2 promised, follow Retroid's own advice and look at the Pocket 5 at $199, which is the fallback the company explicitly recommends and the device the G2 was quietly cannibalizing anyway. Is the Retroid Pocket 6 worth $244?
Yes, if you want a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 handheld. RetroDodo scored it 8.4/10, and Russ at Retro Game Corps called it "the most affordable Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 handheld on the market" even at $245. The price rose from a $229 launch to $244 in March 2026 because of the DRAM shortage, not a spec change.
Was the G2 actually slower than the Pocket 6?
Only slightly on paper. Its Adreno A22 GPU is roughly 8-10% behind the Pocket 6's Adreno 740, and Geekbench 6 single-core is about 1,780 versus 1,985. The real gap is driver maturity: the G2's new chip lacked mature Turnip drivers, so Switch and demanding titles ran worse and some Android apps (Netflix games, Fortnite) would not run at all.
What is the emulation ceiling on these two handhelds?
