THE MACHINE’S VERDICT
One mechanic, executed to a mirror finish — you and your phantom move as one, and your brain folds pleasantly in half.
Alter Ego is the 8-bit design philosophy distilled: a single idea taken as far as it will go. Denis Grachev (RetroSouls) built the original on the ZX Spectrum, and Shiru's NES port is where the central conceit really sings — you control yourself and a phantom twin who mirrors every move, and each screen is a puzzle of swapping places to reach the exit. It's freeware, courtesy of an author who gives everything away. The single-mechanic discipline is the strength and the ceiling: there's no second act, no surprise system arriving an hour in, just steadily nastier variations on one trick. If that trick clicks for you, it's hard to put down; if you bounce off mirror-logic puzzlers, nothing here will convert you. A small, sharp, honest little game. Recommended for puzzle heads.

THE STORY BEHIND THIS CARTRIDGE
Alter Ego started life as a ZX Spectrum puzzle game by Denis Grachev (RetroSouls) and was reborn on the NES, where its central mechanic shines: you and a phantom twin mirror each other's movement, and you swap places to solve each screen. It is the kind of one-idea-executed-perfectly design that the 8-bit era did best — released free by its author, like everything RetroSouls touches.
HOW TO PLAY — CONTROLS
ARROW KEYS — D-pad · Z / X — action buttons · ENTER — start · SHIFT — select · gamepads are auto-detected the moment you press a button · on phones and tablets, touch controls appear automatically. Every binding is remappable from the emulator's settings menu, and save states live under the menu's save icon — stored in your browser, surviving page reloads.
ASKED AND ANSWERED
- Is it legal to play Alter Ego online?
- Completely. Alter Ego is original homebrew for the NES — its developer released it free under a license that permits redistribution, and the full credit is recorded in our attribution file. Nothing here is a commercial ROM.
- Can I play Alter Ego on my phone?
- Yes. Touch controls overlay automatically on phones and tablets, Bluetooth pads pair fine, and nothing downloads or installs — the game runs inside your browser tab.
- What about saving?
- Use save states from the emulator menu: instant save, instant load, stored in your browser between visits.
