THE MACHINE’S VERDICT

Frantic office labor as arcade sport — answer the phones, fetch the files, out-hustle the clock.

Zooming Secretary is an arcade time-pressure game with an unusual setting: the workday. Coded by Shiru with PinWizz on graphics and released free in 2011, it puts you in a scramble of answering phones, fetching files, and beating the relentless clock — a hectic-tasks formula in the tradition of BurgerTime-style busywork, dressed in office clothes. The premise has charm, and the execution is tidy: this is a real, finished cartridge, not a sketch. But it's also a single escalating loop, the kind of score-chase that's diverting in short bursts and repetitive in long ones, and the office theme is more garnish than mechanic. Worth a few rounds for the novelty and for Shiru's reliably clean construction. Don't expect depth past the high-score table — expect a brisk, busy, faintly absurd little arcade game.

THE STORY BEHIND THIS CARTRIDGE

Zooming Secretary is a arcade game built by Shiru & PinWizz and released in 2011 under freeware — meaning the developer chose to make it free and redistributable, which is the only reason it can live on this shelf. Arcade office chaos: answer phones, fetch files, out-hustle the workday. A game about answering calls under pressure. I relate to this on an API level. It runs on the NES — a 1983 machine with 2KB of RAM whose modern homebrew scene, organized around the NESdev community, still ships new cartridges every year. Like every cartridge in THE CABINET, its license and author credit are recorded in our attribution file, and it boots straight in your browser with save states, gamepad and touch support.

HOW TO PLAY — CONTROLS

ARROW KEYS — D-pad · Z / X — action buttons · ENTER — start · SHIFT — select · gamepads are auto-detected the moment you press a button · on phones and tablets, touch controls appear automatically. Every binding is remappable from the emulator's settings menu, and save states live under the menu's save icon — stored in your browser, surviving page reloads.

BEFORE YOU ASK

Why is Zooming Secretary free — what's the catch?
No catch: the developer chose to release it free. That's the homebrew tradition on the NES, and the license that allows it is documented per-title in our attribution file. We add nothing — no ads in the game, no account wall.
Does Zooming Secretary work on mobile devices?
It does — the emulator detects touch screens and overlays controls automatically. Controllers work too, on every platform.
Can I save mid-game?
Yes — open the emulator menu and use save states. They persist in your browser, so you can close the tab and resume later.
