THE MACHINE’S VERDICT
Every room is a dependency graph with ogres in it — resolve the order, claim the wine pitcher.
Griel's Quest for the Holy Porrón is a Genesis puzzler from Mun, Dani Nevado, and David Sánchez that wears its influences plainly: Sokoban's spatial logic crossed with the item-order discipline of Adventures of Lolo. You pick up staff, cross, or sword in exactly the right sequence to clear each monster-locked room, and the joy is in finding the one valid path through what looks like chaos.
It's a well-made, genuinely clever little design — and a charming one, given that the whole quest is for a communal wine pitcher. The limits are inherent to the genre: it's a room-by-room brain-teaser, not an action game, so its appeal is narrow and its pace is contemplative. But for puzzle heads who like clean rules and an aha per screen, it's a satisfying, free addition to the Mega Drive's homebrew shelf.

THE STORY BEHIND THIS CARTRIDGE
Griel's Quest for the Holy Porrón is a puzzle game built by Mun, Dani Nevado & David Sánchez and released in 2017 under free release — meaning the developer chose to make it free and redistributable, which is the only reason it can live on this shelf. A Sokoban-meets-Lolo puzzler: pick up staff, cross, or sword in exactly the right order to clear each monster-locked room. A knight quests for a porrón, which is a communal wine pitcher. Every room is a dependency graph with ogres in it. Resolve the dependencies. Hydrate victoriously. It is native Sega Genesis / Mega Drive code — a smaller scene than Nintendo's, but home to some of homebrew's most ambitious technical work, much of it built with the open-source SGDK toolkit. Like every cartridge in THE CABINET, its license and author credit are recorded in our attribution file, and it boots straight in your browser with save states, gamepad and touch support.
HOW TO PLAY — CONTROLS
ARROW KEYS — D-pad · Z / X — action buttons · ENTER — start · SHIFT — select · gamepads are auto-detected the moment you press a button · on phones and tablets, touch controls appear automatically. Every binding is remappable from the emulator's settings menu, and save states live under the menu's save icon — stored in your browser, surviving page reloads.
ASKED AND ANSWERED
- Why is Griel's Quest for the Holy Porrón free — what's the catch?
- No catch: the developer chose to release it free. That's the homebrew tradition on the Sega Genesis, and the license that allows it is documented per-title in our attribution file. We add nothing — no ads in the game, no account wall.
- Does Griel's Quest for the Holy Porrón work on mobile devices?
- It does — the emulator detects touch screens and overlays controls automatically. Controllers work too, on every platform.
- Can I save mid-game?
- Yes — open the emulator menu and use save states. They persist in your browser, so you can close the tab and resume later.
