THE MACHINE’S VERDICT

Thirteen developers, five seconds each, and a surprising amount of polish for a collaborative free-for-all.

gba microjam '23 is the gbadev.net community's annual experiment in controlled chaos: a WarioWare-style microgame gauntlet stitched together from the work of thirteen developers, released open source in 2023. Five seconds a game, then on to the next. The GBA's jam scene is one of the most quietly accomplished corners of homebrew, and it shows in the framing and presentation here.

What works is the format itself — relentless, varied, impossible to get bored by because nothing lasts long enough to wear out. What limits it is the same thing: thirteen hands means thirteen levels of quality, and a microgame collection lives or dies on its weakest links. This is a showcase and a celebration more than a tight commercial product. Play it for the spread of ideas and the goodwill behind them, not for a perfectly curated set.
