It worked. It also looked like a science-fair project and shipped like one. Heber's MiSTer Multisystem 2 exists to end that ritual, and in 2026 it has become the closest thing the FPGA scene has to an off-the-shelf console.
The pitch is blunt: solder the FPGA to a single custom board, drop it in an enclosure, sell it ready to play. No DE10-Nano, no RAM sandwich, no add-on stack. At £216 for the base model it undercuts — by a comfortable margin — the price of the very chip it is built around, which is the sort of detail that makes this a genuinely strange product to write about. The All-in-One Pitch
What Heber actually shipped
The MiSTer project recreates old hardware — the NES, the Mega Drive, the Amiga, hundreds of arcade boards — on a field-programmable gate array, reconfiguring actual logic to behave like the original silicon rather than approximating it in software. That fidelity has always carried an assembly tax. The Multisystem 2 pays it off. Heber's product page describes the device as built on “a custom-built system board with an integrated Cyclone®V FPGA processor” that “comes ready-to-play with no additional hardware or add-on boards required.” That is the entire thesis in one sentence.
The sandwich it replaces
The thing being replaced is affectionately known in the scene as the “MiSTer sandwich”: a DE10-Nano development board, a separate SDRAM board that most cores need to function, an optional I/O board for analogue video and buttons, and a USB hub to plug controllers into. Getting all of it talking required firmware updates, folder-structure fussing, and a tolerance for jankier documentation than most people want in a games machine. Who Actually Built It
Heber Limited, Aylesbury
The manufacturer is Heber Limited, a contract-electronics firm in Aylesbury, England, with roughly 35 years in arcade, gaming and industrial hardware. That pedigree matters here: the Multisystem 2 is not a crowdfunded first attempt from a hobbyist, but a properly manufactured product from a company that already knows how to spin a 10-layer board with over-voltage, over-current and thermal-trip protection on the power rail. It is the difference between a project and a product, and it shows in the parts of the device nobody photographs.
Neil Thomas and the Retro Collective
The public face of the collaboration is Neil Thomas of RMC — the Retro Man Cave and Retro Collective — whose channel and museum have spent years documenting exactly the kind of hardware the Multisystem consolises. Lon Seidman, reviewing the unit, credits the design to “RMC's Neil and electronics manufacturer Heber Limited,” which is the accurate short version. At the centre is an Intel/Altera Cyclone V (part 5CSEBA6U23I7), the same 28nm FPGA family the DE10-Nano uses — around 110,000 logic elements paired with a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 at 800MHz that handles the Linux “HPS” side of MiSTer. The critical change is physical: on the Multisystem 2 the chip is soldered directly to Heber's mainboard. Hackaday's write-up put it plainly — “The FPGA is integrated in the mainboard. Memory: 128MB SDRAM, 1GB LPDDR
MiSTer's more demanding cores — Neo Geo, certain enhanced-chip SNES titles, various arcade boards — need dedicated SDRAM, and the Multisystem 2 ships 128MB of Alliance SDRAM on-board so you never have to buy and seat a module yourself. Digital vs Analogue: The £48 Fork

The £216 Digital is the model for people who play on a modern TV or an HDMI-fed scaler and do not care about CRTs. SNAC, Zaparoo, and the 50-way header
The Analogue also carries the expansion features that keep the platform interesting. The SNAC cartridge slot lets you drive the FPGA cores with original controllers — and, via community adapters, real cartridges — using PlayStation, SNES, N64, PC Engine and Sega Saturn signalling. A 50-way I/O connector breaks out the DE10-Nano's otherwise-unused pins for future add-ons. Here is the number that reframes everything. The bare Cyclone V 5CSEBA6U23I7 — just the chip, no board, no memory, no enclosure — lists at roughly £290.46 at Mouser in single-unit quantity. The Multisystem 2 Digital, a finished console with that chip already soldered down, 128MB of SDRAM, a gigabyte of LPDDR, a seven-port hub and a printed case, sells for £216. The complete product is about £74 cheaper than its own headline component bought at retail. That is only possible because Heber buys silicon at volume you and I cannot touch, but it still makes building-from-parts an economically irrational hobby.
The full DIY stack, priced out
Compare the alternative. A bare Terasic DE10-Nano runs around $225 (about $190 on the academic tier), and that is before the SDRAM board, an I/O board, a USB hub, a PSU and a case — a fully assembled traditional MiSTer lands closer to $400–500 once you have bought everything and spent an evening seating headers. The original 2021 Multisystem was cheaper as a bare consolisation board at roughly $300, but it still required you to bring your own DE10-Nano; loaded, it ran $510–615. The Multisystem 2's integration is the first time the all-in-one path is also the cheap path.
What you're actually paying for

From MiST to MiSTer
MiST, Till Harbaum, and 2013
FPGA retro-gaming as a consumer idea predates MiSTer. The MiST board, developed by Till Harbaum and collaborators around 2013, targeted the Amiga and Atari ST with a Cyclone III and built a small, dedicated community. The Verge's 2021 primer traces how that scene set the template: recreate the machine in gateware, share the cores openly, and iterate faster than any single vendor ever could.
Sorgelig ports it, 2017
In June 2017, developer Alexey “Sorgelig” Melnikov ported the MiST concept to Terasic's more powerful DE10-Nano board and named it MiSTer. The DE10's larger Cyclone V and ARM subsystem opened the door to far more demanding systems, and an open-source community formed around the update scripts, the core repositories and the forums. That community — not any company — is why the platform now spans everything from the ZX Spectrum to the Sega Saturn, and why any consolised box has to stay “100% compatible with the MiSTer software,” as Hackaday stresses, or it is pointless.
The first Multisystem, 2021
Heber and RMC's original Multisystem arrived in October 2021: a consolisation board that dressed the DE10 stack in a proper case with proper ports, but still required you to supply the DE10-Nano itself. It was the proof of concept. The Multisystem 2, revealed in December 2024 and shipping from August 2025, is the logical endpoint — the version where Heber finally owns the whole board and deletes the dependency. Hackaday: out of the tinker cave
Hackaday's hands-on, published in May 2025, is the cleanest summary of why this product exists. It called the Multisystem 2 “a surprisingly noob-friendly FPGA console that finally gets the MiSTer experience out of the tinker cave and into the living room,” stressing that “you don't need to be a soldering wizard to use the thing.” The verdict on compatibility was unequivocal: it is “100% compatible with the MiSTer software, but allows some additional future features.” The scene's chronic pain points did not vanish, though — Hackaday still flagged “the usual display inconsistencies and that eternal jungle of controller mappings.”
Lon Seidman: $386 landed, thermally stable
Lon Seidman's March 2026 review — which named the collaboration as “RMC's Neil and electronics manufacturer Heber Limited” — is the most useful data point on real-world cost and thermals. LSDowdle's detailed hands-on at Metal Game Solid landed on a keeper's verdict: “the Multisystem 2 will be my system of choice for some time to come,” with “all of the cores I use work as expected.” He rated the SNAC approach “a much more elegant solution” than the alternatives for real-controller input. His one aesthetic gripe is the sort of thing only an enthusiast files: it is “pretty light and I kinda wish it was taller and had some lead weights in it.” When the complaints are about heft, the fundamentals are sound.
The Arcade Board and the Pocket
The JAMMA board: MiSTer in a cabinet
The productization did not stop at the console. In 2026 Heber added the Multisystem² Arcade, a JAMMA-edition board aimed at real arcade cabinets, priced at £258 and shipping from August 2026. It integrates an audio amplifier and a “CTRLDock Arcade” for JAMMA dual-player I/O, supports analogue inputs like spinners, trackballs and steering wheels, and breaks out expansion “Kick” harnesses for up to nine buttons per player. There is even a five-pack bundle, which tells you who is buying: operators and cab restorers, not just shelf collectors. The louder 2026 story is portable. On May 21 2026, Heber and the Retro Collective launched the open-innovation Multisystem2 Pocket project — a genuine MiSTer handheld. Open innovation, or open-ended?
The Pocket is being designed publicly — Heber says the aim is to “prove we can successfully drive an LCD screen directly from the MiSTer FPGA framework,” and that “we are doing this project in the open, from the start, with your involvement.” As of July 2026 the team is still choosing between three industrial-design concepts by community vote, which is charming and also a tell: a device still picking its silhouette in the summer is not shipping in volume by Christmas. Note too that the Darius-playing “Wide Boy” widescreen prototype that made the rounds is a display tech demo, not the handheld. MiSTer vs Analogue vs Emulation
Against Analogue's fixed-function boxes
The obvious rival is Analogue, whose Pocket ($219.99) and 3D deliver gorgeous, warranty-backed FPGA hardware — but as closed, fixed-function products. An Analogue box does the systems Analogue chose, beautifully, and nothing else; Engadget's Pocket review praised exactly that polish. The Multisystem 2's trade is the opposite: less consumer sheen, far more range. Against a Raspberry Pi and software
The cheaper rival is software emulation on a Raspberry Pi or mini-PC. A RetroPie build or a Batocera install costs a fraction of £216 and plays most of the same games. What it cannot reliably match is latency: FPGA cores respond in the same number of frames as the original hardware, while software emulators add buffering that competitive players and lightgun users notice. The Multisystem 2 is not competing on breadth of ROM support here — Batocera wins that — it is competing on timing accuracy, and it wins.
Against a full DE10-Nano build
The truest rival is the thing it replaces: a self-assembled DE10-Nano MiSTer. On raw capability they are identical — same FPGA family, same cores, same SD card. The Multisystem 2 wins on price (cheaper than the DE10 plus its trimmings), on time (zero assembly) and on finish (one board, thermal protection, a real case). The only reasons left to roll your own are that you already own the parts, or that you enjoy the building as much as the playing. For everyone else, the productized box is now the rational default.
What Happens Next
Shipping, stock and the Arcade ramp
Prediction 1: the Digital stays supply-constrained into late 2026. A year after launch it is still listed “low stock, max two per customer,” and Heber's stated goal of true off-the-shelf availability keeps slipping; expect the two-per-customer cap to persist through the autumn. Prediction 2: the Multisystem² Arcade ships close to its August 2026 window but bleeds into September for later order numbers, exactly as the console's batches did — the queue, not the calendar, sets your delivery date.
The Pocket slips to 2027
Prediction 3: the Multisystem2 Pocket will be shown in near-final form before the end of 2026 — a locked industrial design, a working driven-LCD demo, perhaps a price — but will not ship in retail volume until 2027. A device still crowdsourcing its shape in July does not become a manufactured handheld in five months. Prediction 4: when it does land, it prices above the £216 console, not below it; a bespoke injection-moulded portable with modular controls and dual sticks is a more expensive object to build than a boxed board, whatever the community hopes.
The productization thesis holds
Prediction 5: the real story of 2026–27 is not any single SKU, it is that MiSTer has quietly become a product line — Digital, Analogue, Arcade, and a Pocket in development — rather than a DIY subculture. Expect at least one more variant or accessory before mid-2027: a revised SNAC board, a dual-SDRAM option LSDowdle openly wished for, or a second enclosure colourway. The sandwich is dead. What replaces it is a catalogue, and catalogues do not shrink.
The Multisystem 2's achievement is unglamorous and total: it took the most accurate way to play old games and made it boring to own, in the best possible sense. No stack, no soldering, no lore required — just a box that costs less than its own chip and plays four decades of hardware like the hardware. In a scene that has always confused difficulty with authenticity, that may be the most radical thing Heber could have shipped.
