Buy the Pocket 5 if…

3. Your library tops out at Dreamcast, PSP, PS1, and N64. Everything through the fifth generation and early sixth runs identically on both devices. Spending the extra $45 to emulate Crash Bandicoot faster than "instantly" is money set on fire. The Pocket 5 is the correct, unsentimental choice.

4. You want the best value in emulation hardware, full stop. At $199 and increasingly less on closeout, the Pocket 5 delivers a flagship-tier AMOLED and 95% of the practical experience for 80% of the money. Phil Retro's "fantastic gaming machine in a vacuum" is a buy signal for the value-maximizing shopper.

Buy neither if…

5. You already own a Pocket 5, or you need something a slab can't give. If a Pocket 5 is already in your hands, keep it — the upgrade math doesn't clear, and I'd rather you spent the $244 on a card full of games. And if what you actually want is frame-perfect accuracy or a specific console's original feel, the answer isn't a faster Android box at all; it's an FPGA platform or a dedicated reproduction console, which play a fundamentally different game than either Retroid.

The verdict

The Retroid Pocket 6 wins the spec war on every line that matters and most that don't; the Retroid Pocket 5 wins the value war and remains one of the great budget emulation handhelds. For a new buyer, the Pocket 6 is the obvious call — the most affordable 8 Gen 2 handheld going, at a price the memory market inflated but did not ruin. For the Pocket 5 owner it was ostensibly built to tempt, it is a competent, well-cooled, faintly characterless refinement of a device you already like, and the correct answer to "should I upgrade" remains, as RetroDodo put it, a one-word "No."

Scores, then, and they are close because the devices are: the Retroid Pocket 6 earns an 8.5/10 — a benchmark-setting mid-range machine held back from a nine only by a total absence of imagination. The Retroid Pocket 5 earns an 8/10 — older, slower, and still one of the smartest $199 in the hobby. Half a point separates them, which is exactly the size of the chip generation between them, and exactly what you'd expect from two very good handhelds that are, in the end, the same idea eighteen months apart.
