There is a small black box on sale in Aylesbury that costs less than the chip soldered into the middle of it. That is not editorial hyperbole. A single Intel Cyclone V 5CSEBA6U23I7 — the FPGA that does all the work inside the MiSTer Multisystem 2 — runs roughly £290.46 as a one-off order from Mouser. The finished console, assembled, enclosed, tested, with a seven-port USB hub and 1GB of LPDDR bolted on, sells for £216 including VAT. Somebody in the supply chain is performing volume economics that would embarrass a semiconductor distributor, and for once the customer is the beneficiary.

That inversion is the single most interesting fact about Heber's little FPGA console in August 2026, and it has survived a full year of a global memory-price panic without moving. Below is where the Multisystem 2 stands now: what it is, where it came from, what it costs, what the reviewers found when they opened one, and what the next twelve months hold for a project that has quietly grown an arcade board and is halfway to shipping a handheld.

The State of Play, August 2026

Prices that refuse to move

As of this writing, Heber's shop lists the Multisystem 2 Digital at £216 including VAT (£180 ex), marked In stock — (Low stock level), capped at two units per customer. The Analogue model holds at £264 inc (£220 ex), listed ready to ship. Those are the same numbers we recorded a year ago, give or take the ~£12 that crept on between the May 2025 pre-order and the shop's steady-state listing. In a year when DRAM contract prices doubled and half the PC industry started quietly re-pricing SKUs, a fanless retro box holding its RRP is a small act of defiance.

The arcade board finally ships

The genuinely new thing is the Multisystem 2 Arcade — a JAMMA-edge variant at £258 inc (£215 ex, about $350) that Heber lists as pre-order, shipping expected to start in August 2026, fulfilled in order-number sequence into September. It is the same Cyclone V and the same 128MB/1GB memory split, wired to a 24-bit analogue video path with composite sync, a Class-D 10W amplifier with a physical volume knob, and gold-plated JAMMA edge fingers for dropping straight into a cabinet. A handheld, still in committee

And then there is the Pocket. The Multisystem2 Pocket Project — a genuinely open-development handheld — reached a July 2026 update in which the team put three industrial-design concepts to a community vote, with Relay Industries handling the look and feel while the PCB is still being laid out. What the Multisystem 2 Is

FPGA reconstruction, not software emulation

The distinction matters, and the marketing usually mangles it, so here it is straight. A software emulator runs on a general-purpose CPU and interprets another machine's instructions in software. An FPGA — a field-programmable gate array — is a fabric of logic gates you reconfigure to physically become the target hardware. Load the SNES core and the Cyclone V is wired, gate for gate, into an approximation of a Super Nintendo's PPU and CPU, running in lockstep with the original's clocks. The DE10-Nano, soldered down

The MiSTer project canonically runs on a Terasic DE10-Nano development board — a ~$225 academic FPGA dev kit — with an I/O board, a RAM module, and a USB hub stacked on top in the infamous "sandwich." The Multisystem 2's entire reason for existing is to delete that sandwich. Heber solders the Cyclone V directly onto a custom 10-layer mainboard, integrates the RAM and the USB hub, and ships it in an enclosure. As Heber's own product page puts it, the system "comes ready-to-play with no additional hardware or add-on boards required." No DE10-Nano. No RAM-module hunt. No hub spaghetti.

One board, backward-compatible with the stack

Crucially, it does this without forking the software. The Multisystem 2 runs stock MiSTer cores, scripts, and updates unmodified, and Heber lists it as "backwards compatible with MiSTer Stack & Multisystem 1." You are not buying a Heber platform; you are buying a tidier chassis for the open MiSTer platform. That is the whole pitch, and it is an honest one — the software remains the community's, and Heber sells you the furniture.

From MiST to Multisystem

Harbaum, Melnikov, and an open project

MiSTer did not appear from nowhere. It is the descendant of MiST, Till Harbaum's ~2013 FPGA board aimed at recreating the Atari ST and Amiga. Around June 2017, Alexey "Sorgelig" Melnikov ported and expanded the concept onto Intel's more capable Cyclone V dev board, named it MiSTer, and — critically — ran it as an open project on GitHub, with cores contributed by a sprawling community of hardware describers. The Verge's 2021 primer called it, correctly, an effort to rebuild vintage computers and consoles in reconfigurable silicon. None of that is Heber's work; Heber built the box around it.

The first Multisystem (2021)

Heber Ltd — a 35-year-old Aylesbury arcade and industrial-electronics firm — teamed with Neil Thomas of RMC and The Retro Collective and shipped the original MiSTer Multisystem in October 2021. It was already an accessibility play: a carrier board that took a DE10-Nano and dressed it as a console, roughly $300 without the Nano or $510–615 fully loaded. The board's schematics, PCB files, and Gerbers went open-source hardware through Heber's GitHub by July 2023 — a genuinely unusual move for a commercial product, and squarely consistent with the MiSTer project's ethos.

Announced 2024, shipping 2025

The Multisystem 2 was announced in December 2024, opened for pre-order on 6 May 2025, and began shipping its first production batch in early August 2025 — Heber targeted around the 10th. A second batch of roughly 1,000 units followed, with the first ~500 selling quickly. Lon Seidman's review notes the collaboration plainly: it was "developed in the UK through a collaboration between RMC's Neil and electronics manufacturer Heber Limited." That is the correct attribution; ignore any source that assigns it to a lone hobbyist named Richard, or anyone else.

The chip costs more than the console

This is not a trick of clearance pricing — it is the gap between one-off distributor rates and Heber's volume reels, plus the plain fact that a retro-console margin is thinner than a semiconductor distributor's. It is the cleanest illustration going of why buying the finished box is rational in 2026, and why rolling your own from parts has become, mostly, a hobby in its own right rather than a saving.

What's in the box — and what isn't

What you get: the board, the enclosure, a power switch with over-voltage, over-current, and thermal-trip protection, and the integrated USB hub. What you do not get: a power supply, an SD card, an HDMI cable, a WiFi dongle, or a single game. The console ships with no software "for copyright reasons" — you supply your own legally dumped ROMs and a 32GB+ SD card, and the Digital model, lacking Ethernet, wants a USB WiFi dongle to pull cores. Budget another £20–30 in accessories before you play anything, and factor Lon's up-to-4-amp 5V supply into that.

Digital vs Analogue vs Arcade

The shared silicon

All three boards share the same brain: the Cyclone V (~110,000 logic elements) with a hard dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor system clocked around 800MHz for the Linux "HPS" side, 128MB of Alliance SDRAM for core memory, and 1GB of ISSI LPDDR for the ARM side. All three are fanless, all three are 10-layer PCBs, and all three run silent by design. The differences between the models are entirely in the I/O.

Where Analogue earns its £48

The £48 gap between Digital and Analogue buys the outputs CRT owners actually care about: a 9-pin mini-DIN RGB/SCART path with proper composite sync, a 15-way VGA port, a 24-bit DAC (18-bit in practice), TOSLINK optical audio, Ethernet, and — the enthusiast's real prize — a SNAC slot. SNAC (Serial Native Accessory Converter) lets original controllers and, via adapters, real cartridges talk to the FPGA with essentially zero added latency, across PlayStation, SNES, N64, PC Engine, and Sega Saturn. Metal Game Solid's reviewer called SNAC support "a much more elegant solution" than the alternatives, and he is right.

The Arcade board's JAMMA edge

The Arcade variant swaps living-room outputs for cabinet plumbing: a JAMMA edge connector with gold fingers, 24-bit analogue video with composite sync for arcade monitors, dual-player I/O with support for analogue inputs (spinners, trackballs, wheels), expansion to nine buttons per player, and an onboard Class-D 10W amplifier with a physical volume control. It is a drop-in FPGA brain for a real cab, which is a thing that did not exist in this price bracket before it arrived.

What the Reviewers Said

Lon Seidman: thermally balanced, $386 landed

Lon Seidman's March 2026 review is the most measured of the bunch. He paid "about $386 for mine (including shipping and tariffs)" — a number worth internalising for any US buyer. On the engineering he was complimentary: "my testing indicates the hardware is thermally balanced, maintaining stability even during intensive tasks," a non-trivial result for a fanless board driving a 28nm FPGA hard. His framing of the product's purpose is the cleanest one-liner anyone has managed: it "bridges the gap between the technical flexibility of the original FPGA development boards and the convenience of a dedicated home console." He also documents the practicalities — "four front-facing USB ports, dual rear USB ports," and power over "a 5V barrel connector, though the system can draw up to 4 amps."

Hackaday: out of the tinker cave

Hackaday's May 2025 write-up, "MiSTer for Mortals," framed the accessibility angle with the appropriate mix of affection and scepticism. The Multisystem 2, it wrote, finally gets the MiSTer experience "out of the tinker cave and into the living room," because "the FPGA is integrated in the mainboard. No RAM modules, no USB hub spaghetti," and "you don't need to be a soldering wizard to use the thing." It is "100% compatible with the MiSTer software, but allows some additional future features." The same piece is refreshingly honest about the caveats: you still inherit "the usual display inconsistencies and that eternal jungle of controller mappings," and you still have to "just add some ROMs (legally, of course)."

Metal Game Solid: system of choice, wants lead weights

Metal Game Solid's LSDowdle delivered the most enthusiastic verdict — "the Multisystem 2 will be my system of choice for some time to come" — while lodging the funniest complaint in the entire review corpus: the box is "pretty light and I kinda wish it was taller and had some lead weights in it." That is roughly what passes for a damning flaw here. When the harshest hands-on criticism anyone can muster is that the console is insufficiently heavy, the hardware is in good shape.

Getting Legal ROMs Onto It

The SD card is the whole OS

There is no internal storage and no app store. The Multisystem 2 boots from a full-size SD card, and that card is the system: the HPS binary, the menu core, every system core as an .rbf bitstream, your configs, and your content all live in a flat layout under /media/fat. Format a 32GB+ card, drop in the MiSTer release, and the structure looks like this:

update_all.sh does the heavy lifting

You do not assemble that tree by hand. The community update_all.sh script — dropped into the Scripts folder and run from the on-screen menu — pulls current cores, arcade MRA definitions, and filters over the network. This is also why the Digital model's missing Ethernet matters: no dongle, no updates, no cores. On the Analogue and Arcade boards you have a wired jack; on Digital you are on WiFi over USB, and that dongle is not in the box.

Zaparoo, real carts, and the law

Two nicer touches. Both models support Zaparoo NFC loading — tap a tagged card to launch a game, a genuinely pleasant physical-media affectation. And the Analogue board's SNAC slot enables real-cartridge play via adapters. On legality: MiSTer cores are open-source hardware descriptions and entirely legal; the ROMs are your problem. Dumping cartridges you own for personal use sits in a broadly tolerated corner of copyright law in most jurisdictions; distribution does not, and the console's "no games included" stance is Heber staying firmly on the right side of that line. FPGA vs Software vs Bare Board

Against a DE10-Nano stack

The most direct comparison is the thing the Multisystem 2 replaces. A DIY MiSTer stack starts at a ~$225 DE10-Nano and climbs fast once you add the I/O board, a 128MB SDRAM module, a powered hub, and an enclosure — realistically $350–500+ assembled, plus your afternoon. The Multisystem 2 Digital lands that at £216 with none of the assembly and a warranty. The DIY route wins on exactly two axes: total control, and the smugness of having built it yourself.

Against a Pi or a Batocera box

Software emulation is the honest competitor on price. A Raspberry Pi 5 with RetroPie, or an x86 mini-PC running Batocera, will play the same 8- and 16-bit libraries for a fraction of the Cyclone V's cost, and for most players on a modern LCD the difference is inaudible and invisible. What FPGA buys you is timing fidelity — sub-frame latency, correct clocks, edge-case accuracy — and CRT compatibility that software boxes reach only with effort. If you run everything upscaled to a 4K TV with a wireless pad, buy the cheaper box. If you own a Trinitron and can feel a frame of lag, the Multisystem 2 justifies itself.

Against the Analogue consoles

The other FPGA option is Analogue's closed hardware — the Analogue Pocket at $220, or the Analogue 3D and its siblings. Engadget's Pocket review praised its polish, and that is exactly the trade: Analogue gives you a beautiful sealed appliance for one family of systems; MiSTer gives you an open, sprawling, occasionally janky platform that plays practically everything and gains new cores monthly. The Multisystem 2 is the argument that open FPGA can be nearly as convenient as closed FPGA without the walled garden.

The Arcade Board and the Pocket

The Multisystem2 Pocket Project is the ambitious one. Launched openly in May 2026 and updated in July, the current concept is a horizontal handheld with a 4-inch high-resolution display, dual stereo speakers, dual analogue sticks, twin shoulder buttons, a curved ergonomic back, and — the standout idea — removable "JOYSTIX" control modules that slide off so you can swap layouts per system, possibly with batteries distributed into the controls for weight balance. Why a handheld MiSTer is genuinely hard

Do not confuse the Pocket with the "Wide Boy," a Darius-playing widescreen prototype that Time Extension was careful to flag as a display tech demo, not the handheld. The reason a portable MiSTer is hard is physics and economics: the Cyclone V is a 28nm part that draws real power and dumps real heat, the fanless console already needs up to 4 amps at 5V, and a battery-driven build has to tame that inside a pocket. Then there is the RAM. What Happens Next: 6–12 Months

The console edges toward off-the-shelf

Prediction 1: the "In stock — Low" / max-two-per-customer gating persists through most of the next two quarters, and Heber's long-stated goal of a freely off-the-shelf console keeps slipping into 2027. The chip-supply reality that makes a £216 console possible is the same reality that makes it hard to stock deeply. Expect availability to improve, not resolve.

The Arcade board outsells expectations

Prediction 2: the JAMMA edition quietly becomes the sleeper hit of the lineup. Five-pack bundles and no purchase cap point squarely at operators and the bartop-cabinet scene, a market that has been starved of a clean, modern, cycle-accurate cabinet brain. Prediction 3: expect the Arcade board to ship closer to schedule (August–September 2026) than the console restocks, because a funded pre-order pays for a defined production run rather than a speculative one.

The Pocket slips, and memory is the reason

Prediction 4: the Pocket does not ship in 2026. A three-concept vote in July, with the PCB still in development, is not a device that reaches customers in five months; realistically it lands in 2027, and the open-development cadence — while admirable — will keep the timeline visibly elastic. Prediction 5: when the Pocket's bill of materials is finalised, the DRAM spike forces either a price above the £216 console or a memory-spec compromise. The Verdict

Who should buy it now

If you already know what MiSTer is, own a CRT or care about latency, and have been putting off building a DE10-Nano sandwich, the Multisystem 2 is the easy call — and the Analogue model at £264 is the one to buy, because the SNAC slot and analogue outputs are the entire point of choosing FPGA over a cheap software box. If you are wiring a cabinet, the £258 Arcade board is a genuinely new option with no real equivalent at the price.

Who should wait

If you play on a 4K TV with a wireless controller and cannot articulate why sub-frame latency matters to you, save the money: a Raspberry Pi or a Batocera mini-PC will serve the same libraries for less, and you will not notice the difference across the room. And if you specifically want the handheld, wait — the Pocket is real, it is being built in the open, and it is a 2027 story wearing a 2026 announcement.

The bottom line

The Multisystem 2 is the most honest hardware in the FPGA space: it takes an open project, deletes the friction, refuses to fork the software, and sells the result for less than its own main chip costs at retail. A year on, the price has not moved, the reviewers are quietly delighted, and the roadmap is filling out rather than fraying. In a hobby full of overpriced nostalgia, a box that undercuts its own silicon is a rare and welcome insult to the supply chain.
