The Law: Why Any of This Is Legal
The Machine promised to know the law as well as the lore, so here it is. Buying a Retroid Pocket and installing emulators is not a legal gray area. It is settled American case law, and the distinction that keeps it settled is worth internalizing before you fill a microSD card.
Emulators are legal; Sony v. Connectix settled it
In Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. v. Connectix Corp., 203 F.3d 596 (9th Cir. 2000), the Ninth Circuit ruled that Connectix's Virtual Game Station — a PlayStation emulator for the Mac — was legal, even though building it required copying Sony's BIOS during reverse engineering. The court called the resulting product "modestly transformative" and found the intermediate copying protected as fair use. The emulator software on your Pocket 6 — RetroArch, Dolphin, AetherSX2 — stands on that precedent. The programs themselves are clean.
ROMs are the part that isn't
The software that runs is legal. The game files are where liability lives. A ROM or ISO of a game you do not own is an unauthorized copy, full stop, and no amount of "abandonware" hand-waving changes that under current law. Why Retroid ships a bare Android box
Notice what Retroid does not include: games. Every Pocket ships as a stock Android device with no ROMs preloaded, because bundling copyrighted games would convert a legal hardware business into an infringement case overnight. The company sells you a capable computer and a microSD slot; what you put on it is your legal responsibility, not theirs. That deliberate emptiness is a feature, not an oversight — it is the same reason a blank hard drive is legal to sell.

The winner, with an asterisk
Buy the Retroid Pocket 6, 8GB, at $244. It wins on the three rows that decide real emulation — a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 with mature Turnip drivers, the only active fan in its price bracket, and a 6000mAh battery — and it does so as, in Retro Game Corps' words, "the most affordable Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 handheld on the market." RetroDodo's 8.4/10 is the right score: this is a very good, slightly boring machine that plays everything through the sixth console generation beautifully and asks you to pretend the seventh does not exist. The asterisk is that "slightly boring" is a fair charge. If you want a device that surprises you, this is not it. If you want a device that works, it is.
The runner-up and the wildcard
The Pocket 5 at $209 is the value runner-up — 70% slower in single-core but genuinely competent to PS2, and $35 cheaper. In a normal market it would be an easy recommendation; in this one it is squeezed so tightly against the flagship that only a strict budget justifies it. The wildcard is the Pocket Nova at $229, whose 4:3 screen and 8 Gen 2-class silicon could unseat the flagship for pure sixth-gen play — if it ships as promised and reviews well. Until it does, it is a promising pre-order, not a recommendation. The G2 is dead and the Mini V2 is a niche within a niche.
What to actually buy in July 2026
The final ranking: (1) Pocket 6 8GB for almost everyone; (2) Pocket 6 12GB at $279 if you stream PC games or run heavy native Android and can stomach the storage tax; (3) Pocket 5 if $35 genuinely matters; (4) Pocket Nova to watch, not yet to trust; (5) Mini V2 for the pocket purist.
