That mismatch between what the machines were built for and what they now do is exactly why they are worth writing about at length.

A device that keeps getting refined in public

The Pocket 5 and the Pocket 6 are the two most recent entries in a line that has been iterating in the open for years, each revision quietly closing the gap between emulation curio and the thing you actually reach for on the couch. The lineage runs through the Pocket 2, the 2+, the 3 and 3+, the 4 and 4 Pro, and now the 5 and 6, and at every step the pitch has been the same: take a flagship phone chip a generation or three past its retail prime, bolt real gamepad controls onto it, skip the cellular modem and the camera array nobody wanted, and sell the result to people who would rather own a dedicated device than fumble a Bluetooth controller clipped to a phone. Coverage generally treats it as sitting in the same 5.5-inch class as the Pocket 5, and the marginally larger chassis is consistent with a same-or-slightly-larger panel, but we are logging what is confirmed, a 1080p 120 Hz OLED, and declining to stamp a number on the cell that the manufacturer did not clearly commit to. If that reads as pedantic, good. Pedantry about specs is the entire value proposition of a review that is not being paid by the manufacturer.

The Silicon: 865 vs 8 Gen 2

This is the section that actually decides the argument, because on a device whose only job is running emulators, the chip is the product and everything else is packaging. The Pocket 5 runs the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865, the flagship of 2020, paired with the Adreno 650. The Pocket 6 runs the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, the flagship of late 2022, paired with the Adreno 740. The stated reason, reported by Time Extension, was "ongoing shortages and sharply rising costs for both RAM and storage," the same memory crunch that rippled across the entire 2026 hardware market and that we have tracked in everything from graphics-card pricing to next-gen console forecasts. By 12 June 2026, both Android Authority and The Gadgeteer confirmed the $244 figure as the settled base price, with the Retroid product page displaying the original $229 as a crossed-out number. The 12 GB tier then returned in June, but with a tell: the revived version was 12 GB / 128 GB at $279, the same price the old 12 GB / 256 GB tier had commanded, for half the storage. You paid the same money and the shortage quietly ate 128 gigabytes.
