There is a specific kind of product comparison that exists only because a company shipped the same idea twice, eighteen months apart, and got meaningfully better at it the second time. The Retroid Pocket 5 and the Retroid Pocket 6 are that comparison. Same 5.5-inch footprint, same landscape layout, same broad promise — a pocket-sized Android machine that emulates everything through the sixth console generation without complaint. What separates them is one full Qualcomm SoC generation, a doubled refresh rate, and, as of the summer of 2026, roughly thirty-five dollars.

The RP6: the 4nm follow-up
The Retroid Pocket 6 opened preorders on October 27, 2025 and reached retail in early 2026. Its heart is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 — the SM8550 “Kalama,” a 4nm N4P chip with a Cortex-X3 prime core at 3.2GHz, four A715 performance cores, three A510 efficiency cores, and the Adreno 740 GPU carrying full Vulkan 1.3 support and, on paper, hardware ray tracing nobody buying this device will ever use. This is a 2023 flagship-class part, which in emulation terms is the single most important sentence in this article.
Around that chip Retroid built the upgrades you would predict: 8GB or 12GB of the faster LPDDR5x memory, 128GB or 256GB of UFS 3.1, the same 5.5-inch 1080p AMOLED but now running at 120Hz, a 6,000mAh battery paired with 27W fast charging, and — crucially — active cooling, a genuine fan, to let the 8 Gen 2 stretch its legs without thermal-throttling into mush. Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.3 handle connectivity. Weight climbs to somewhere between 304 and 320 grams depending on which listing you trust; call it 30 to 40 grams heavier than the RP5. The controls keep the hall-effect sticks and add analog L2/R2 triggers, and Retroid lets you pick a D-pad-top or stick-top face layout at checkout, which is a nicer touch than it sounds. The one thing they did not upgrade: the OS. The RP6 ships on Android 13, same as the RP5, while the cheaper G2 sibling somehow got Android 15. Playing it safe, as we will keep noting.

Where the RP6 pulls ahead
Line the two columns up and the RP6 wins on the rows that cost money to improve: the SoC, the memory type, the refresh rate, the battery, the charger, the cooling, and the radios. None of these are marketing invention. LPDDR5x genuinely moves data faster than LPDDR4x, which matters for the memory-bandwidth-starved workload that is PlayStation 2 emulation. A 120Hz panel genuinely renders motion the 60Hz panel cannot. A fan genuinely lets a 4nm chip hold its clocks. The single most quotable number is the Geekbench 6 single-core result: 1,176 for the RP5 against 1,985 for the RP6. What the process shrink buys you is not just raw speed — it is speed per watt, which in a fanless-versus-fanned comparison compounds. The RP5 has to sip power to avoid cooking itself in a sealed shell; the RP6 can drink, because there is a fan pulling the heat out. That is why the real-world gap between these two under sustained PS2 load is wider than the single-core Geekbench delta alone would suggest. Peak-versus-sustained is where old passive flagships quietly lose.
Geekbench, AnTuTu, and what the numbers translate to
Synthetic numbers are only useful if you can convert them into frames, so here is the conversion. 6,000mAh vs 5,000mAh
The RP6 carries a 6,000mAh cell against the RP5’s 5,000mAh — a roughly 20 percent capacity increase, which is exactly the kind of upgrade that sounds better than it plays out, because the 8 Gen 2 also draws more power under load than the 865 does. The extra capacity is partly feeding a hungrier chip. In light use — Game Boy, SNES, GBA, PS1 — Saltalamacchia reported six to eight hours on the RP6, which is plenty for a device you will charge nightly anyway. 27W and the fan
The RP6 adds 27W fast charging, which the RP5 lacks entirely, and that is arguably a bigger quality-of-life win than the battery capacity. A 6,000mAh cell that refills fast is functionally larger than a 5,000mAh cell that trickles. The fan is the other half of the thermal story: active cooling exists specifically so the 8 Gen 2 can hold its clocks through a long PS2 session instead of throttling. PS2 and GameCube: the RP6’s real job
This is the generation the RP6 was built to win and the RP5 was built to merely survive. Now the correction. Some coverage — including a few breathless product briefs — claims the RP6 runs “nearly all PS3 and Xbox 360-era” games. It does not, and anyone who tells you otherwise has not loaded RPCS3 on it. The RP6 is a sixth-generation-and-earlier machine with a bonus tier on top. PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 emulation is a slideshow at best. The RP5’s July surprise

Rather than let the RP5 sit as the cheap 8GB option, Retroid bumped its base configuration to 12GB and nudged the price to around $209, with free RAM upgrades for unfulfilled orders — the same memory squeeze, applied to the older device. This is where the comparison gets genuinely strange: the two handhelds now converge on 12GB of RAM and sit roughly $35 apart, except the RP5’s memory is the slower LPDDR4x and its chip is three years older. The capacity headline matched; the substance did not. And that is the trap. A shopper skimming spec columns sees “12GB, $209” next to “12GB, $244” and thinks they are saving thirty-five dollars on the same thing. They are not. They are saving thirty-five dollars on a 2020 flagship instead of a 2023 one.
How It Plays: Five Players, Five Verdicts
Specs are an abstraction. Here is how the choice resolves for five specific people, because a handheld is only as good as the session it fits into.
The casual and the completionist
The casual player — someone who wants Link’s Awakening on the couch, a few PS1 RPGs, maybe some GBA on a flight — is genuinely well served by either device, and this is the one buyer for whom the RP5 still makes crisp financial sense on deep discount. Everything in that library runs flawlessly on the 865. The 120Hz panel and the fan are solving problems this player does not have. If you find an RP5 under $180, buy it and never think about the RP6 again.
The completionist — the person who wants one device that runs the entire library from Pong to the harder GameCube games at maximum fidelity, and who plans to keep it for years — should buy the RP6 without hesitating. The completionist’s whole personality is not wanting to hit a wall, and the RP5 has a visible wall at heavy PS2 and GameCube. The RP6’s 3x GameCube, 2x PS2, and driver maturity are exactly the headroom this buyer is paying for. Notebookcheck’s summary — reviews “praise its performance and value, but knock some of its design choices” — is the honest ceiling.
Buy the RP5 (on sale) if
4. You find one under ~$180 and your ceiling is PS1/PSP/Dreamcast. At a real discount, the RP5 is a tremendous value for the fifth generation and below, and Phil Retro is right that “in a vacuum… it’s still a fantastic gaming machine.” The catch is the vacuum. At its post-July $209, the RP5 makes no sense against a $244 RP6 — the discount has to be real.
Buy neither if
5. Your library stops at the 16-bit era. If you are never going past SNES, Genesis, and Game Boy Advance, both Retroids are absurd overkill and your money is better spent on a $90 Miyoo-class handheld, with the change going toward a microSD card. And if what you actually want is a bigger screen or genuine PC and PS3 capability, the Odin 2 Portal at $249 gives you a 7-inch panel and an 8,000mAh battery on the same chip, while the Steam Deck OLED — now $789 for 512GB after its May 2026 hike — is a different class of machine for a different budget entirely.
The Law and the Lore
A retro handheld is a legal instrument as much as a gaming one, and the history of how it became legal is more interesting than either spec sheet. Indulge me.
Connectix and the settled law of emulation
Neither of these devices ships with a single game, and that is not an accident of stinginess — it is the entire legal architecture of the hobby. - Con: Selective at GameCube, strained at heavy PS2, and a full generation behind on GPU driver maturity.
- Con: 60Hz panel, no fast charging, Wi-Fi 6/BT 5.1 — every convenience row is a step back from the RP6.
- Con: The pricing. At its post-July-2026 ~$209 it is only ~$35 cheaper than a far better device. It is, per Phil Retro, “outpaced by its own shadow.”
The shared caveats
Both devices share the same three honest warnings. First, this is Android, which means a settings-tinkering hobby, not a plug-and-play console — per-game emulator profiles, occasional driver swaps, the whole ritual. Second, neither ships with a single game, and getting a library onto them is your legal and logistical problem. Third, both are made by a company that iterates fast and cheap, which is wonderful for buyers and merciless for resale value — the RP5 is living proof, cannibalized inside a year by the G2 and the RP6. RetroDodo’s 8.4 and our 8.5 are the same verdict: a superb, slightly boring machine that does everything and surprises you with nothing.
Retroid Pocket 5: 7.5 / 10 — but only on sale. In isolation this is an excellent device and would score higher. In the actual 2026 market, sitting $35 below a decisively better sibling, its rating is a function of its discount. Under $180 it is an 8. At its current ~$209 it is a 6, because there is no reason to buy it. Split the difference and call it 7.5, with a giant asterisk that reads “check the price first.”
The one-sentence answer
If you are buying today and either device is near its current price, buy the Retroid Pocket 6 — the ~70% performance jump, the 120Hz panel, and the driver maturity are worth thirty-five dollars, and the RAM crunch has made the RP5’s discount too shallow to justify buying a three-year-old chip.
