As of this writing, in August 2026, the G2 has been discontinued for roughly five months. You cannot buy one new. The comparison you came here for is, in the most literal sense, between a handheld and a memory.

We are going to run it anyway, because the spec sheets that keep surfacing this matchup are not wrong about the hardware. They are just missing the one line that matters most. So this is both a comparison and a coroner's report: what the two devices are, how they differ down to the driver stack, and why the cheaper one on paper is the one you should not go looking for.

What the spec sheets get wrong

Where the G2 wins, and why it doesn't matter

Give the G2 its due. It ships a newer Android (15 versus 13), a newer Bluetooth radio (5.4 versus 5.3), a lighter and physically smaller body (280g and 199mm tall against 320g and 210mm), and total silence from passive cooling where the Pocket 6 spins up an audible fan under load. The takeaway is one column wide. The G2's $219 is a historical price for an unavailable device. The Pocket 6's $244 is a live one.

Android 13, Android 15, and LineageOS

This is the one category where the G2 held a durable-looking lead — and where a July 2026 development quietly took it away.

Buy the Pocket 6 if...

The honest summary

Strip the sentiment and it reads like this: the G2 wins weight, silence, and sticker price, and loses drivers, app compatibility, refresh rate, battery, video output, and existence. The Pocket 6 wins everything that decides what runs, plus the only round that cannot be argued with — you can put money down and receive one. Ban at Retro Handhelds, reviewing the G2 before it died, asked and answered the buyer's question directly: "If it were my money, would I buy the G2? No." That was true when it was $219 and in stock. It is more true now.

The Verdict

A comparison is supposed to end in tension. This one does not, and pretending otherwise would be a disservice to the $244 you are about to spend.

The recommendation

Buy the Retroid Pocket 6. It is the faster device on the workloads that matter, the better-supported device on drivers and OS updates, the only device with a live purchase page, and — against all intuition for the pricier option — the cheapest way into a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 handheld in 2026. RetroDodo scored it 8.4/10 with the sardonic caveat that "Retroid have played it too safe to turn heads" and "a $250 device should have something unique." That is a fair knock on ambition and a non-issue for value: the Pocket 6 is boringly excellent, and boring-excellent at $244 is the correct purchase.

If you already own a G2

Keep it. A discontinued device is not a broken one, and the G2 remains a lovely PS1/PSP/Dreamcast/2x-PS2 machine that fits the pocket better than the Pocket 6 does. Upgrade only when you want the Switch tier, heavy Android compatibility, or sustained thermals — the reasons in the migration section, not FOMO. And when the LineageOS port lands for the G2, take it; a newer OS base is the cheapest performance you will ever get.

In practical terms the gap is total, because the market resolved it in March. Phil Retro's line about the older Pocket 5 fits the G2's obituary just as well: "The problem isn't the device; it's the neighborhood it lives in." The G2 lived in a neighborhood the RAM crunch condemned. The Pocket 6 is still standing, still shipping, and still the answer.

Retroid publicly recommends the Pocket 5 as the fallback. As of August 2026 there is no new stock, so any G2 you find is used or old channel inventory.
How much faster is the Pocket 6 than the G2?
In single-core the gap is about 10%: the Pocket 6's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 scores roughly 1,985 in Geekbench 6 versus the G2's Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 at around 1,780, which Retro Handhelds GG measured at about 10% below the 8 Gen 2. On GPU the raw gap is only 8-10%, but real-world it is wider on demanding titles because of driver maturity.
Does the Retroid Pocket G2 run Nintendo Switch games?
Barely, and worse than the Pocket 6. HandheldRank's head-to-head is blunt: "The RP6 wins here, and it's not close. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has years of driver optimization from the Android phone ecosystem (Turnip Drivers)." The G2's Adreno A22 lacks mature open-source Vulkan drivers, so Switch emulation glitches where the RP6 runs select titles.
Why does the G2 run Android 15 while the Pocket 6 runs Android 13?
Different SoC vendors ship different board support packages, and the G2's newer gaming chip happened to launch on Android 15 while the Pocket 6 shipped on Android 13. The gap closed on July 1, 2026, when the Pocket 6 gained official LineageOS 23.2 support — which is based on Android 16, four full releases ahead of stock.
