MiSTer Multisystem 2: £216, No DE10 Stack (2026)
There is a version of retro-gaming economics that only works if you refuse to think about it too hard. In 2026 you can buy a finished, boxed, fanless console that plays cycle-accurate Super Nintendo, Mega Drive, Neo Geo, PC Engine and coin-op arcade hardware — and it retails for less than the single most expensive component bolted to its own circuit board. The console is the MiSTer Multisystem 2. The component is an Intel/Altera Cyclone V FPGA, and if you tried to buy one bare from Mouser you would pay more for the naked chip than Heber charges for the whole machine. That is not a discount gimmick. It is the entire reason this device is worth writing about.
The Pitch: A MiSTer Without the Sandwich
For a decade, MiSTer was the most accurate way to play old games and the most annoying way to buy the hardware to do it. The Multisystem 2 is Heber's attempt to keep the first half of that sentence and delete the second.
What the Multisystem 2 actually is
MiSTer is the open-source project that reimplements vintage game and computer hardware on a field-programmable gate array — a chip whose logic can be rewired in software to become, gate for gate, the silicon inside an SNES or a Neo Geo MVS. It is not emulation in the software sense; there is no general-purpose CPU interpreting opcodes at a latency penalty. The Multisystem 2 is the “consolized” version of that project, to borrow the word Lon Seidman used in his March 2026 review: a device that takes the powerful-but-hostile MiSTer platform and hides every wire, jumper and dev board a normal buyer used to have to source themselves.
Why “no DE10-Nano” is the whole story
A traditional MiSTer build is a sandwich. You buy a Terasic DE10-Nano development board, seat an SDRAM module onto it, bolt on a USB-hub daughterboard and an I/O board, then wrap the stack in a printed case. Every layer is a place to buy the wrong part. The Multisystem 2 deletes the sandwich: the Cyclone V is soldered directly to a custom 10-layer mainboard, with the RAM, the powered USB hub and every output integrated on one PCB. As Hackaday put it in its May 2025 hands-on, “The FPGA is integrated in the mainboard. No RAM modules, no USB hub spaghetti.”
The £216 headline and what it buys
The entry ticket is the Digital model at £216 including UK VAT (£180 ex-VAT). For that you get the soldered Cyclone V with a passive heatsink, 128MB of dedicated SDRAM for the cores plus 1GB of LPDDR for the ARM/Linux side, an integrated seven-port USB 2.0 hub, HDMI out with a direct-video DAC path, and silent, fanless operation. You do not get games — more on that deliberate omission below — and you supply your own SD card, 5V power brick and HDMI cable. It is, by any honest reading, the cheapest way to own a factory-built MiSTer that has ever existed.
Who Built It: Heber, RMC, Open Hardware
The Multisystem line is not a crowdfunded mystery from an anonymous seller. It is the product of a genuinely unusual pairing: a decades-old British industrial-electronics manufacturer and one of retro's most-watched YouTube operations.
Heber Ltd and The Retro Collective
Heber Ltd is an Aylesbury-based contract electronics firm that has spent 35 years building arcade, gaming and industrial boards — the kind of company that already owns the pick-and-place machines and the compliance paperwork. The design collaboration runs with Neil Thomas of RMC / The Retro Collective, the museum-and-YouTube outfit behind a large slice of the modern retro-hardware conversation. Lon Seidman credits the project to “RMC's Neil and electronics manufacturer Heber Limited,” which is the correct way to describe a partnership where one side brings the audience and the tinkering credibility and the other brings a real factory.
Open-source hardware since July 2023
The original Multisystem board design went fully open-source as of July 2023, with the schematics, PCB layout and Gerber files published on GitHub. This matters for a preservation device: the platform is not a black box that dies when the vendor loses interest. The enclosure is 3D-printable and open too. You are buying a manufactured convenience, not a locked ecosystem, and that distinction is the whole ethical pitch of MiSTer over a sealed emulation appliance.
No games in the box, by design
Heber's store states plainly that no games are supplied, for copyright reasons. This is not a limitation the company is embarrassed about; it is the legal spine of the entire FPGA-preservation scene. You bring your own software — ideally dumped from cartridges you own, which is a project in itself. FPGA vs Emulation: A Short History
To understand why a box that costs as much as its own chip is a bargain, you have to understand what the chip is doing and where the project came from.
From MiST to MiSTer
The lineage starts around 2013 with MiST, Till Harbaum's FPGA board aimed at recreating the Amiga and Atari ST. In June 2017, Alexey “Sorgelig” Melnikov ported and expanded the idea onto Terasic's DE10-Nano, and MiSTer — the name is a play on “MiST” plus the newer board — was born. It grew into a sprawling open-source catalogue of cores covering consoles, home computers and arcade PCBs. What the Cyclone V is actually doing
The FPGA at the centre of all this is a 28nm Intel/Altera Cyclone V (part number 5CSEBA6U23I7), carrying roughly 110,000 logic elements and a hardened dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 at 800MHz. An FPGA is a mesh of logic blocks you configure after manufacturing, so the same chip can be flashed to behave like a 65C816, a Motorola 68000 or a Z80 with the timing of the real part. That is the difference between playing an accurate copy and running a software translation layer with a controller-to-screen delay. The ARM cores handle the Linux front-end — menus, file loading, updates — while the FPGA fabric is the console.
The original Multisystem, and its stack
Heber and RMC first consolized MiSTer in October 2021 with the original Multisystem, which packaged the DE10-Nano stack into a friendlier case for somewhere around $300 board-only and $510–$615 fully loaded. It was a real improvement, but it still assumed you would buy and seat a DE10-Nano yourself. The Multisystem 2 is the version that finally removes that assumption, which is why the naming — a “2” that is really a “no-stack 1” — undersells how different the product is.

£216 Console, £290 Chip: The Numbers
Now the arithmetic that makes this device newsworthy rather than merely nice.
The bill of materials nobody can undercut
A single Cyclone V 5CSEBA6U23I7, bought as a bare part from Mouser in one-off quantity, runs about £290.46. The Multisystem 2 Digital — a finished console wrapped around that same chip plus RAM, a seven-port hub, a 10-layer PCB, a heatsink and a case — sells for £216 inc-VAT. In other words, Heber's volume pricing and in-house manufacturing let the completed product undercut the retail cost of its own most expensive component by roughly £74. Even the DIY route can't beat it cleanly: a bare Terasic DE10-Nano is about $225 (around $190 on academic pricing) before you add RAM, a hub, I/O and a case. The consolized box is cheaper than the sum of its hobbyist parts.
Digital versus Analogue, line by line
There are two console SKUs and a third arcade variant. The Digital is £216 inc / £180 ex and outputs HDMI, with a direct-video DAC path for the purists. The Analogue is £264 inc / £220 ex and adds the things CRT owners care about: a 9-pin mini-DIN RGB/SCART output with composite sync, a 15-way VGA connector, a 24-bit video DAC (18-bit in practice), TOSLINK optical and 3.5mm audio, wired Ethernet, and the SNAC expansion slot. Both models are fanless, both carry the 128MB SDRAM (Alliance) plus 1GB LPDDR (ISSI) memory arrangement, both use the 10-layer PCB, and both include Zaparoo NFC support.
What US buyers actually pay
Sterling pricing flatters the machine for anyone outside the UK. Lon Seidman reported paying “about $386 for mine (including shipping and tariffs)” — the honest all-in number for a US import in early 2026, and a reminder that the £216 headline is a UK-doorstep figure, not a global one. It still lands under the price of most new first-party consoles, for a device that plays several thousand cores' worth of hardware. Prices have also crept: launch in May 2025 was £204/£252 inc-VAT, so both SKUs have nudged up around £12 in their first year rather than falling.
Three SKUs: Digital, Analogue, JAMMA
As of August 2026 the range is genuinely three products, and picking the wrong one is the most common way to overspend or under-buy.
The Digital model (HDMI-only)
If your display is a modern TV or a good scaler, the Digital at £216 is the right default. HDMI out, the direct-video DAC option for analogue-style signal timing, the full seven-port powered USB 2.0 hub (four front, two rear, one internal), a 5V barrel input rated to 4 amps, and silent operation. It ships without Ethernet on the digital board, so online updates lean on a USB Wi-Fi dongle you provide. Heber has listed it as “In stock — low” with a two-per-customer cap for most of 2026, which tells you how supply-constrained the off-the-shelf promise still is.
The Analogue model (SCART, VGA, SNAC)
The £264 Analogue is the CRT enthusiast's machine and the only one with the SNAC slot, which lets original controllers and light guns talk to the cores with essentially zero added latency over the real console — for PlayStation, SNES, N64, PC Engine and Sega Saturn pads. Metal Game Solid's reviewer called SNAC “a much more elegant solution” than USB adapters, and it is the single feature that justifies the £48 premium for anyone with a Trinitron and a drawer of original controllers.
The JAMMA Arcade wildcard
The newest entry is the Multisystem² Arcade, a JAMMA edition aimed straight at real cabinets, at £258 inc / £215 ex (roughly $350) and shipping August–September 2026. It swaps living-room outputs for a 24-bit analogue video path with composite sync, an onboard 10W Class-D amplifier with a physical volume control, dual-player JAMMA I/O, support for spinners, trackballs and wheels, and up to nine buttons per player through kick harnesses. Setup and Software: One SD, One Script
Hardware is half the story; the reason MiSTer intimidated people for years was the software ritual. The Multisystem 2 doesn't magically change MiSTer, but it does mean the ritual is the only hard part left.
One SD card, one script
Everything lives on a single FAT32 SD card (32GB is a sane floor). The MiSTer HPS executable, the menu core, per-core configs and your own game folders sit under /media/fat. SNAC, Zaparoo, and real controllers
Two features move the Multisystem 2 past a plain MiSTer. SNAC (Serial Native Accessory Converter) routes an original controller port straight into the FPGA, so your day-one hardware behaves exactly as it did in 1994. Zaparoo, supported on both console models via NFC, lets you tap a physical token to launch a game — a tidy, collector-friendly way to “insert” software without menu-diving. Neither is essential; both are the kind of polish that separates a product from a project.
The quirks nobody sells you
It is not all frictionless, and the honest reviewers say so. Hackaday flagged “the usual display inconsistencies and that eternal jungle of controller mappings” — problems inherited from MiSTer itself, not introduced by Heber. Different cores expect different aspect ratios, scaling and input maps, and you will spend an evening tuning before it feels like a console. If that sentence sounds exhausting, a software route like a frozen-but-friendly RetroPie build may suit you better; MiSTer trades convenience for accuracy, not the reverse.
What the Reviewers Actually Found
Three independent hands-on reviews, none of them fluff, converge on the same verdict with different emphases. Lon Seidman on thermals and price
Seidman's Lon.TV review is the most measured of the three. He found the fanless design “thermally balanced, maintaining stability even during intensive tasks,” and framed the whole product as something that “bridges the gap between the technical flexibility of the original FPGA development boards and the convenience of a dedicated home console.” His $386 landed cost is the reference figure for US buyers.
Hackaday on the tinker cave
Hackaday framed the Multisystem 2 as the device that finally gets “the MiSTer experience out of the tinker cave and into the living room,” insisting “you don't need to be a soldering wizard to use the thing.” Crucially for compatibility anxiety, it confirmed the board is “100% compatible with the MiSTer software, but allows some additional future features” — the integrated design isn't a fork, it's a superset.
Metal Game Solid on the form factor
The most enthusiastic take came from LSDowdle at Metal Game Solid, who concluded that “the Multisystem 2 will be my system of choice for some time to come.” The one physical gripe is almost funny: the box is “pretty light and I kinda wish it was taller and had some lead weights in it.” When the worst complaint about a preservation device is that it feels insufficiently premium in the hand, the engineering underneath is clearly sound.
The Competition: Analogue, Pi, Emulation
The Multisystem 2 sits at a specific intersection, and it loses on at least one axis to each of its neighbours. Knowing which axis matters to you is the whole buying decision.
Analogue's closed FPGA boxes
Analogue makes the other famous FPGA hardware — the Super Nt, Mega Sg, and the Analogue Pocket, the last of which Engadget reviewed at $220. Analogue's products are gorgeous, polished and single-purpose: one box, a fixed set of officially-shipped cores, no update_all rabbit hole. But they are closed. You cannot add a system Analogue didn't ship. Software emulation on a Pi or PC
The cheapest rival is software. RetroArch on a Raspberry Pi or a mini-PC, via RetroPie or a distro like Batocera, runs most 8- and 16-bit systems convincingly for a fraction of £216. What it cannot fully match is deterministic, cycle-accurate timing and the near-zero input latency an FPGA delivers, because a software emulator is always interpreting or recompiling on a general-purpose CPU. For most people that gap is invisible; for the audience that buys a £264 Analogue model with a SNAC port, it is the entire point.
Where the Multisystem 2 actually wins
It wins on being open and convenient at once — the only device in its class that is both a factory product and a hackable, documented, community-driven platform. Analogue gives you polish without openness; a Pi gives you openness without accuracy or convenience; the DIY DE10 stack gives you all three in theory and a weekend of assembly in practice. The Multisystem 2's pitch is that you can have the MiSTer catalogue, cycle-accurate, out of a box, for less than the chip costs at retail.

What's Next: The Pocket and the Queue
Two open questions define the next year for this platform: whether Heber can ever make it a stock item, and whether the handheld ships.
The Multisystem2 Pocket Project
On 21 May 2026, Heber and The Retro Collective announced the Multisystem2 Pocket Project — a genuinely open, community-involved attempt to build a handheld MiSTer, with industrial design by Relay Industries and injection-moulded (not 3D-printed) construction. The July 2026 development update floated three concept directions for a community vote, with a shared feature set: a 4-inch high-resolution display, dual stereo speakers, dual analogue sticks, twin shoulder buttons, a curved ergonomic back, and removable “JOYSTIX” controls that slide off to swap or add buttons. Targeted cores start with NES, Game Boy, Neo Geo, Mega Drive, PC Engine and SNES. The widescreen “Wide Boy” Darius demo that circulated earlier is explicitly not the handheld — it is a tech demo proving the FPGA can drive an LCD directly.
The order queue and the off-the-shelf promise
The demand signal is real but should be read carefully. Heber's order book is a numbered fulfilment queue processed in batches of roughly a thousand. Coverage around February 2026 put it at roughly 20,000 orders placed with more than 10,000 fulfilled — those are orders in a queue, not units flying off a shelf, because shipping only began in August 2025. The company's stated goal of a true buy-it-now, off-the-shelf product by spring 2026 has effectively slipped; the two-per-customer cap and “low stock” labels were still up through mid-2026.
Five predictions for the next 6–12 months
- Prices hold or creep, they don't fall. With the bare Cyclone V still north of £290 and the broader silicon/DRAM market tight, expect £216/£264 to stay put or nudge up again, not drop.
- The JAMMA Arcade is the sleeper hit. Shipping August–September 2026 at ~£258, it undercuts boutique superguns and lands with the cab-restoration crowd; expect early runs to sell out faster than the consoles did.
- The Pocket shows working silicon in 2026 but ships in 2027. Driving a 4-inch panel straight from a core is non-trivial; a demo unit is plausible this year, retail units are not.
- The 50-way expansion connector gets exploited. The integrated board exposes the previously-unused DE10 pins; expect at least one Heber or community add-on that a DIY stack can't easily match — the “additional future features” Hackaday hinted at.
- “Off-the-shelf” finally arrives late 2026 — or the queue never fully clears. Either Heber catches supply and drops the per-customer cap, or a Multisystem 3 / next-FPGA conversation starts before this one is ever freely in stock.
The Verdict: Who Should Buy One
The Multisystem 2 is not for everyone, and the deadpan truth is that most people who think they want one would be happier with a cheap clone box. But for the audience it targets, nothing else is close.
Buy it if
Buy the Digital (£216) if you want the most accurate, lowest-latency way to play 8- and 16-bit and arcade hardware on a modern TV, and you value an open, documented, non-disposable platform. Buy the Analogue (£264) if you own a CRT, care about RGB/SCART output, or want SNAC support for original controllers. Buy the JAMMA (£258) if you have an actual arcade cabinet. In all three cases you are paying for accuracy and openness, not convenience alone.
Skip it if
Skip it if your honest use case is “I want to play some old games sometimes.” A Raspberry Pi build or even a good handheld — the sort we compare in our Retroid Pocket 5-versus-6 breakdown — will scratch that itch for less money and less fiddling. FPGA accuracy is a connoisseur's purchase; if you can't articulate why input latency matters to you, you don't need to spend £216 to find out.
The bottom line
Heber and RMC built the thing MiSTer needed for a decade: a real console, made in a real factory, that keeps the platform open and sells for less than its own FPGA costs at retail. The naming is modest and the supply is tight, but as a piece of preservation hardware the Multisystem 2 is the current high-water mark. When your biggest complaint is that it's too light in the hand, the machine has already won the argument.
