It has been discontinued since March, it sold out within minutes of the announcement, and it is not coming back until, in Retroid's own careful phrasing, market conditions allow. The comparison the brief wants — two live handhelds, pick one — is a comparison to a ghost.

That does not make the exercise pointless. It makes it more interesting. The G2 is the most instructive dead handheld of the year: a device that was, on paper, roughly as fast as its more expensive sibling, cheaper, lighter, and shipping sooner — and it still lost. Understanding why it lost tells you more about buying an Android emulation handheld in 2026 than any spec sheet does. So we will do the full autopsy: the silicon, the drivers, the benchmarks, the pricing, and the memory-market panic that put the G2 in the ground five months after it shipped. And the G2 is not a $219 product you can add to a cart. It is a $219 product that Retroid pulled from sale on March 16, 2026.

Buy the Retroid Pocket 6 at $244, because the G2 you were comparing it to no longer exists, and even when it did, the extra $25 bought a 120Hz panel, a 6,000mAh battery, active cooling, 4K output, Wi-Fi 7, and — the part that actually matters — a graphics driver stack with years of optimization behind it. HandheldRank put the emulation verdict bluntly: on Switch, "The RP6 wins here, and it's not close."

Three people should keep reading. The first already owns a G2 and wants to know whether to feel cheated (you shouldn't — you got a good device at a good price before it got scarce). The second is staring at a secondhand G2 listing wondering what it is worth now (less than someone is asking, almost certainly). The third is a Pocket 6 buyer who wants to understand what they are actually getting for their money, and why the cheaper chip in the cheaper device was a trap. Two Handhelds, One Obituary

You cannot understand this comparison without understanding what killed one of its subjects. The G2 did not fail in the market. It was withdrawn from it.

The official line, repeated across every outlet that covered it, was that the G2 was being pulled due to "ongoing fluctuations in memory pricing," and would return "when market conditions allow." In the same breath, Retroid told disappointed buyers to look at the Pocket 5 instead — a device from 2024, which tells you how thin the near-term bench had become.

This was not an isolated event. Two weeks earlier, on March 2, Retroid had already raised the price of the Pocket 6's base model by $15 and discontinued its 12GB configuration outright. GamesRadar framed the G2's death in the context of a wider collapse: "Weeks after the Steam Deck disappeared, Retroid discontinues Pocket G2 'due to ongoing fluctuations in memory pricing.'" When a Valve product and a Retroid product go out of stock in the same month for the same stated reason, the reason is not the products.

Why memory pricing killed it

The reason is DRAM. Engadget, reporting a later round of Retroid price hikes on the Pocket 5 and Flip 2, put the cause in one line: "AI companies' demand for memory has prompted component makers to radically hike their prices." The G2 shipped 8GB of that increasingly precious LPDDR5x at a $219 price point with, by all accounts, very little margin. When the memory got more expensive, the math stopped working.

"It never really fit anywhere"

There is a second, quieter reason the G2 was the one Retroid chose to sacrifice, and a reviewer named Andrew at Retro Handhelds identified it: "Part of the problem with the Pocket G2 is that it never really seemed to 'fit' anywhere in Retroid's lineup." The G2 runs Android 15. The Pocket 6 ships on Android 13. The G2 has Bluetooth 5.4; the Pocket 6 has 5.3. This was the flagship phone chip of 2023, and it has been powering high-end Android devices ever since. The G2 uses the Snapdragon G2 Gen 2, part of Qualcomm's gaming-focused "G" series, with an Adreno A22 GPU. It is a newer part designed specifically for handheld gaming devices.

Reviewers who benchmarked the G2 found its GPU landed remarkably close to the Pocket 6's. Retro Handhelds measured the G2's graphics performance at roughly double the old Snapdragon 865 in the Pocket 5, and estimated it sat only "8–10% behind" the Adreno 740. Eight to ten percent. On a spec sheet, that is a rounding error. If raw shader throughput were the whole story, the G2 would be a spectacular value: 90% of the flagship's graphics muscle for $25 less. The story does not end there, and the reason is the least glamorous word in computing: drivers.

Turnip, or why "newer" lost

A GPU is inert without a driver, and an emulator is a uniquely brutal driver stress-test — it asks the graphics hardware to do things no phone game ever requested, translating the graphics API of a PlayStation 2 or a Nintendo Switch into Vulkan calls in real time. The quality of that translation depends entirely on how mature and well-optimized the GPU's Vulkan driver is. Turnip has had years to mature against the Adreno 740, because the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has been in millions of phones and the open-source Mesa developers have hammered on it relentlessly. As HandheldRank put it, "The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has years of driver optimization from the Android phone ecosystem (Turnip Drivers)." The G2's Adreno A22 is new. It arrived in a niche gaming chip that "almost nobody has access to yet," in HandheldRank's words. Turnip support for it is immature. The catch-22 is vicious and precise: the G2's stock drivers glitch demanding emulators like Nintendo Switch; the community driver that would fix those glitches is not yet well-optimized for the A22, so enabling it tanks performance. You are stuck choosing between glitchy-and-fast or clean-and-slow. On the Adreno 740, Turnip gives you clean-and-fast, because someone already did the years of work. This is why HandheldRank concluded that "demanding games that stutter on the G2 will hit better framerates on the RP6" despite the near-identical raw specs. The eight-percent silicon gap becomes a chasm once real software runs across it.

The apps that just don't run

The G2's newness bit in a second, more mundane way. A brand-new SoC is not on the compatibility whitelists that big commercial Android apps check before they agree to run. HandheldRank's list is comically blunt: "Some major Android apps straight-up don't work. Netflix games? Nope. Certain big Android games? Nope. Fortnite? Nope." None of that matters if you only ever launch RetroArch. But an Android handheld is supposed to be a general-purpose device — that is the entire pitch over a locked-down Linux handheld — and the G2 quietly failed at parts of being an Android device because its chip was too new for the software ecosystem to have noticed it yet. Geekbench and the synthetic gap

In Geekbench 6, the Pocket 6 posts a single-core score around 1,985 — a roughly 69% jump over the Pocket 5's 1,176, which is the generational leap the number "Pocket 6" implies. The G2's CPU lands lower: reviewers pegged it at around 50% faster than the old Snapdragon 865, or roughly 1,780, which they characterized as about 10% behind the 8 Gen 2. So on the CPU side, the Pocket 6 holds a real but not enormous lead, and on the GPU side, as covered above, the raw gap is that same ~8–10%. Synthetic benchmarks flatter the G2. They measure the silicon, not the software running on it, and the software is where the G2 falls apart. Keep that in mind for every row of the table below: the G2's "worse" emulation results are frequently a driver story, not a horsepower story.

The Pocket 6 is a magnificent sixth-generation-and-earlier machine that dabbles in select Switch titles. Buy it for what it does, not for a marketing fantasy.

Battery and thermals

The Pocket 6's larger 6,000mAh cell and active fan translate to real endurance figures from RetroDodo: roughly 4.5 hours of mixed emulation, stretching to 8–10 hours on light 8- and 16-bit systems, and dropping to 2.5–3 hours when you pin the SoC at full tilt on PS2 or GameCube with the fan spinning. The G2's 5,000mAh battery is smaller, but its lower-power chip and passive cooling change the equation — less peak draw, but also thermal throttling under sustained load, which is the tax you pay for silence and slimness. In practice the two land in the same rough neighborhood for retro workloads, with the Pocket 6 pulling ahead precisely when the workload gets heavy enough to spin its fan. If you want cool-and-quiet for an SNES marathon, the G2 was lovely. If you want to brute-force a GameCube game at 3× for two hours without a thermal cliff, the fan earns its keep.

Pricing and Availability in 2026

This is where the comparison stops being academic. One of these devices has a price. The other has an asking price on the secondhand market, which is a different and more dangerous thing.

The Pocket 6's pricing tells its own story of the crunch. It opened at $209 for the 8GB model on early-bird pre-order, settled to a $229 retail price, then jumped to an effective $244 (a $249 sticker with typical discounting) on March 2. The Gadgeteer summarized the state of play in a June headline: "Retroid Pocket 6 Is Now $244, Four Months In." The 12GB model was killed the same day and later resurrected in June as a 12GB/128GB variant with the asymmetric "stick-up-top" layout at $279. The G2, meanwhile, went $199 on pre-order to $219 at retail, and then to zero — not $0, but zero units.

What $244 actually buys

Russ at Retro Game Corps framed the value proposition in a single line that survives the price hike: "Even at $245 it's the most affordable Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 handheld on the market. The 12GB RAM model provides more headroom for PC gaming, and it's a bummer that it's discontinued." That is the case in miniature. For $244 you get the cheapest way onto a proven flagship chip, an AMOLED panel running at 120Hz, a fan, 4K output, and — crucially — the mature driver ecosystem that makes the chip worth having. RetroDodo scored it 8.4/10 and called it a device that "packs some serious power in a very small formfactor," even while grumbling that Retroid "played it too safe to turn heads." Notebookcheck's summary was similar: reviews "praise its performance and value, but knock some of its design choices." Nobody calls it exciting. Everybody calls it correct.

The secondhand G2 question

Because the G2 is discontinued and was genuinely well-liked, secondhand prices have the potential to get silly. Here is The Machine's rule, delivered without sentiment: do not pay more than $219 for a used G2, and ideally pay meaningfully less. The $219 was its price when it was new, warrantied, and returnable. A used unit is none of those things, and it carries the driver liabilities described above — glitchy Switch, immature Turnip, a handful of Android apps that refuse to launch. If someone is asking $240 for a used G2 while a new, warrantied Pocket 6 sits at $244 with a faster CPU, a better panel, a fan, and working drivers, the used G2 is not a deal. The only scenario where a secondhand G2 makes sense is a genuinely cheap one — call it $150 or below — bought by someone who specifically wants the smaller, lighter body and plays nothing more demanding than PSP and GameCube. That buyer exists. That buyer is rare.

You want to play the occasional Switch title and dream about Yuzu-lineage emulators reaching further every year. Buy the Pocket 6, and it is not close. This is the exact scenario the driver catch-22 governs. HandheldRank's verdict — "the RP6 wins here, and it's not close" — is entirely about Turnip maturity on the Adreno 740. The G2 would glitch on the same titles and offer no path to fixing it. If future-proofing against increasingly demanding emulators is your priority, the mature-driver device is the only rational choice, and HandheldRank agreed, calling the RP6 "the safer long-term bet if you care about Switch and PC emulation."

The GameCube and PS2 purist

Your library is Melee, Wind Waker, God of War, and the SNES back catalog, and it stops there. Honestly? Either device serves you, which is precisely why the G2 was such a tragic little machine — for this buyer it was a legitimately fine, cheaper, lighter option, running PS2 at 2.5× and GameCube at native 1080p without complaint. But since you cannot buy one new, buy the Pocket 6 and enjoy the fan keeping F-Zero GX stable at 3× through a long session. Speaking of which: F-Zero GX is the canonical stress test here for a reason — built by Sega's Amusement Vision on Triforce arcade hardware, it is famously the hardest GameCube game to emulate cleanly, and both devices handling it says the sixth generation is thoroughly solved.

The couch and TV player

You dock the thing and play on a television as often as in your hands. Buy the Pocket 6 without hesitation. Its USB-C 3.1 port drives 4K at 60Hz over DisplayPort; the G2 topped out at 1080p60. On a big panel, that difference is visible and permanent. Pair it with a Bluetooth controller — and note that here the G2's marginally newer Bluetooth 5.4 was never going to overcome the Pocket 6's superior video pipeline. A legal aside, because The Machine knows the law and you should too. Emulation itself is settled law in the United States: in Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. v. The honest summary

The G2's cons column is dominated by two entries that were not the device's fault — it got a brand-new chip whose software ecosystem hadn't caught up, and it got discontinued by a memory crisis. Buy the Retroid Pocket 6 at $244. This is not a close call, and it stopped being close the moment Retroid pulled the G2 from sale. But even in the counterfactual world where both devices sat on the shelf side by side, the Pocket 6 was the correct purchase for anyone whose library reached beyond the sixth generation, anyone who valued a 120Hz panel or 4K output, and anyone who wanted a handheld whose drivers would keep improving rather than waiting on Turnip support that might never mature. The ~8–10% raw silicon gap flattered the G2; the years of driver optimization behind the Adreno 740 is the real, decisive advantage, and it does not show up in a Geekbench score. Noah Kupetsky's verdict on the G2 was almost affectionate and entirely fatal: it was a fine device "let down only by the next handheld coming so soon." If it worsens, expect more configurations to vanish and more prices to creep. Either way, the lesson the G2 taught is durable and worth carrying into whatever you buy next: on an Android emulation handheld, the maturity of the graphics drivers matters more than the raw specification of the graphics chip.
