By 2026 the 8 Gen 2 is two flagship generations old, which sounds damning until you remember that emulation is bound far more by driver quality and single-thread burst than by the latest node. A 2022 flagship with mature drivers will out-emulate a 2025 mid-tier part with immature ones, and it is not close. Snapdragon G2 Gen 2: The Weird One
The G2's chip is the interesting one, and interesting is doing some work in that sentence. Pocket Retro Gaming reviewed the device under the headline “Weird Snapdragon, Great Results,” and the weird is earned. Qualcomm's Snapdragon G series is a gaming-only line — G1, G2, G3x — that exists to sell handheld makers a chip with the marketing word gaming stamped on it. The G2 Gen 2 sits in the middle of that line: Beebom reported it delivers “2.3x better CPU performance and 3.8x faster GPU performance, compared to the Snapdragon G2 Gen 1,” which sounds enormous until you note that the Gen 1 it is lapping was a weak cloud-gaming part. A big multiple over a slow baseline still lands you in the middle.
The core layout is a genuine Frankenstein. The published configuration — one GoldPlus prime at 2.8 GHz, four Gold cores at 2.57 GHz, three Silver cores at 1.9 GHz — maps, per Notebookcheck's reading, to a Cortex-X4 prime bolted to older Cortex-A710 and A510 companions. That X4 prime is newer than anything in the 8 Gen 2. The rest is not. It is a chip assembled from parts of different generations to hit a price and a thermal envelope, which is exactly what a bespoke handheld SKU is for — and exactly why its behavior is harder to predict than a phone chip that shipped in millions of identical units.
Adreno 740 vs Adreno A22
The GPUs are where the fight is decided, because emulation is a GPU-bound problem at the resolutions these screens demand. The Pocket 6 has the Adreno 740. The opacity is itself a data point about how much scrutiny a gaming SKU attracts versus a phone flagship — which is the bridge to the actual problem with the G2.
The Dead-Chip Problem

Here is the part that no spec table shows you and that decides how these two devices age. Android emulators — the demanding ones, the ones you buy a $220 handheld to run — do not use Qualcomm's stock Vulkan driver. It is, in emulation terms, a paved road. The Adreno A22 is a brand-new, low-volume gaming part whose long-term place in that ecosystem is unproven. It may get first-class Turnip support. It may get patchy support. It may get quietly left behind. Nobody knows, and nobody knows is a bad thing to be told about a $219 purchase you plan to keep for years.
The AYANEO Precedent
We are not speculating in a vacuum, because this exact movie has already played once. When AYANEO shipped the Pocket S on the Snapdragon G3x Gen 2 — the flagship sibling of the G-series, with an Adreno A32 — the launch came with software friction. Time Extension and others documented that certain titles simply would not run correctly at first, and the broader story of that device is one of a gaming SKU whose driver situation lagged the mainstream and improved only slowly, on the community's schedule rather than Qualcomm's. The G2 Gen 2 is a cheaper, more obscure part than the G3x Gen 2, from the same gaming-only line, with the same fundamental exposure. The precedent does not prove the G2 will be orphaned. It proves that betting on gaming-SKU silicon is a bet on future community goodwill, while betting on a mainstream flagship is a bet on work that has already been done.
