RTX 5090 Review 2026: A $5,090 Lightning Z Exists
The Verdict: A $1,999 Card, a $5,090 Twin
The GeForce RTX 5090 is the fastest consumer graphics card ever built. That was settled inside the first day of reviews in January 2025, nothing since has seriously contested it, and repeating it is about as useful as observing that the sun is warm. The interesting question, the one the review cycle spent all of 2025 and most of 2026 circling, is what fastest costs, and what the number printed on the box has to do with the number you actually pay.
Here is the tell. NVIDIA launched this card at a $1,999 MSRP. Thirteen months later MSI shipped a factory-overclocked version of the exact same silicon, called it the RTX 5090 Lightning Z, and priced it at $5,090, a figure chosen to rhyme with the model number because at that altitude the price is a joke everyone is in on. Same GB202 die. Same 32GB of GDDR7. Somewhere between ten and eighteen percent more performance. Two and a half times the money.
The number that matters isn't the frame rate
Every credible outlet measured the RTX 5090 at roughly 20 to 50 percent faster than the RTX 4090 at 4K, depending on the game and how CPU-bound it was. That spread is real and it is large, and we will get to the exact figures. But by the time you finish this piece you will remember the pricing timeline more clearly than any benchmark, and that is the correct takeaway. In 2025 the story was the silicon. In 2026 the story is the invoice.
What the reviews actually agreed on
Read the January 2025 verdicts side by side and a consensus falls out immediately: this is the best consumer GPU money can buy, and almost nobody should buy it. PCWorld called it the most brutally fast graphics card ever introduced and then, in the same breath, said it feels like this GPU was designed more for AI researchers than PC gamers. That sentence is the whole review, and arguably the whole product.

If you render, train models locally, or edit 8K timelines, the RTX 5090 is a straightforward professional tool that happens to run Cyberpunk. The January 2025 Launch: $1,999 on Paper
NVIDIA revealed the RTX 50-series at CES on January 6, 2025, and put the RTX 5090 on sale on January 30, 2025 at a $1,999 MSRP for the Founders Edition. It was the top of the Blackwell consumer stack from day one, sitting above the $999 RTX 5080, and it has never been dethroned within its own generation. What NVIDIA shipped on January 30
The Founders Edition arrived as a genuinely impressive piece of industrial design: a full-power 575W card crammed into a two-slot chassis with a dual flow-through cooler, a physical shrink from the three-slot brick that was the RTX 4090. Board partners shipped their own three- and four-slot designs immediately, most of them quieter and cooler, all of them larger. The FE was the engineering flex; the partner cards were the ones you could actually keep cool.
The Founders Edition two-slot gamble
Squeezing 575W through two slots is a thermal magic trick, and it came with fine print. The die and the memory
The GB202 die carries 21,760 CUDA cores and roughly 91 billion transistors. Engadget's Devindra Hardawar noted that transistor count in a review headlined, memorably, Pure AI excess for $2,000. The headline VRAM figure is the 32GB of GDDR7 on a 512-bit bus, good for about 1,792 GB/s of bandwidth. That is a 78 percent bandwidth increase over the 4090 and the single biggest reason the card scales so well at 4K and in memory-hungry AI workloads.
Power and the two-slot cooler
575W is a 28 percent power increase over the 4090's 450W, and it is delivered through a single 12V-2x6 connector rated for about 600W, a margin thin enough that we gave the connector its own section. Note that both cards use the same TSMC 4N process node. The RTX 5090's gains come from a wider, larger die and faster memory, not from a manufacturing shrink, which is precisely why performance-per-watt barely moved generation over generation. What GamersNexus measured at 4K
GamersNexus' Founders Edition review, published January 24, 2025, put the 4K rasterization uplift at roughly 20 to 50 percent over the RTX 4090, depending on the title. Ray tracing at 4K landed at about 27 to 35 percent. The Verge's real-game numbers
The Verge's Tom Warren declared a new king of 4K is here and backed it with concrete figures: Forza Motorsport ran 35 percent faster than on the 4090 with TAA, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider averaged 238fps at 4K. Those are best-case, GPU-bound scenarios, exactly the conditions under which this card justifies itself, and exactly the conditions most gamers do not actually play in.
Why 1440p and 1080p tell a different story
Drop below 4K and the gains shrink fast, because the RTX 5090 starts waiting on your processor instead of stretching its legs. At 1440p and 1080p the uplift over a 4090 often collapses into single or low-double digits; the GPU is so far ahead of current CPUs that it sits idle. DLSS 4 and Multi Frame Gen: The Asterisk
NVIDIA's headline marketing claim was that the RTX 5090 is twice as fast as the 4090. That number is real only if you accept a specific, generous definition of fast, and the reviewers did not.
What Multi Frame Gen actually does
DLSS 4 introduced Multi Frame Generation, which uses AI to insert up to three generated frames between each pair of rendered frames, a 4X frame multiplier exclusive to the 50-series. It launched alongside the cards on January 30, 2025 with 75 supported games, a list NVIDIA grew past 250 titles by CES 2026. Where it works, it is genuinely impressive; on-screen smoothness climbs dramatically.
The twice-as-fast marketing problem
The catch is that generated frames are not rendered frames. They add visual smoothness but no responsiveness, and they can introduce latency and artifacts. Overclocker and YouTuber der8auer put a clamp meter and thermal camera on a Founders Edition and found the current wildly unbalanced across the connector's wires, individual conductors carrying as much as 22 amps against a per-wire spec of roughly 8 to 9, with the plug hitting around 150C on the PSU side. At 575W across a connector rated for about 600W, there is almost no headroom for that kind of imbalance.
Why the Founders Edition regressed
The root cause is that the FE has no per-pin current load balancing. Earlier flagships like the RTX 3090 Ti used shunt resistors to monitor and balance current across the pins; the 5090 FE dropped that safety net, so a poorly seated or slightly damaged cable can dump most of the load onto one or two wires. It is a regression, not an accident of manufacturing, and there has been no recall.
Club386's verdict, and a mitigation
Club386's Ben Hardwidge destroyed both a Founders Edition and a be quiet! Dark Power 13 PSU using a fully-seated, first-party cable, and concluded flatly that this power connector isn't fit for purpose, and Nvidia needs to admit it. Until NVIDIA does, the pragmatic mitigation is to lower the card's power ceiling, which cuts peak current and temperature for a trivial performance loss:

Critical Reception: Fast, and Everyone Said So
The 2025 review consensus was unusually tidy. Nearly every major outlet agreed on the performance, agreed on the price complaint, and agreed that the target audience was narrow. The disagreements were about degree, not direction.
The supercar consensus
TechRadar scored it 4.5 out of 5 and called it the supercar of graphics cards, then listed ludicrously expensive among its cons and concluded the card is so good that it's largely superfluous for just about anyone who isn't in it for the pure flex of owning it. That is a 4.5-star review that also tells you not to buy the thing, which is a strange and honest place to land.
The pricing dissent
The dissent was never about speed, it was about value per dollar. A 25 percent MSRP increase over the 4090 buying roughly 30 percent more average 4K performance is not, on its face, a terrible ratio. The problem is that the 4090 was already absurd overkill, so paying $400 more to exceed absurd overkill is a purchase decision reviewers struggled to recommend to any normal buyer.
The built-for-AI read
The sharpest recurring observation was that this is barely a gaming product. Engadget's Devindra Hardawar called it the fastest video card I've ever seen, but it's not meant for mere mortals and more a flex by NVIDIA than anything truly meaningful for most gamers. Between the 32GB frame buffer, the tensor-heavy Blackwell design, and PCWorld's AI-researchers line, the subtext was unanimous: the RTX 5090 is a data-center card that consented to run games.
The $5,090 Lightning Z
If the January 2025 launch was the product story, the February 2026 arrival of MSI's RTX 5090 Lightning Z was the punchline, and the single best illustration of how unhinged the top of this market became. This is where the review cycle stopped being about a GPU and started being about a status object.
What MSI built
Revealed at CES 2026, the Lightning Z is a limited run of 1,300 units, sold by lottery, at an official price of $5,090.99, a number engineered to echo the model name. It pairs an AIO liquid cooler with an 8-inch telemetry screen and, crucially, two power connectors feeding an 800W default power limit, selectable to 1,000W, plus a separate 2,500W XOC BIOS meant for liquid-nitrogen record runs. Club386 called it, not unkindly, a card of flashes of graphics card greatness.
The performance ceiling: 12 percent, maybe 18
For all that engineering, the Lightning Z is about 12 percent faster than a stock Founders Edition out of the box, stretching to roughly 18 percent with manual overclocking, while running as much as 16C cooler thanks to the liquid loop. Tom's Hardware reviewed the Lightning Z on February 12, 2026, called it the best RTX 5090 yet made, and headlined the piece RTX 5090 Ti, anyone?, the point being that MSI had essentially built the halo card NVIDIA declined to. How the MSRP became fiction
The RTX 5090 essentially never sold at $1,999 outside a handful of launch-day Founders Edition units. The 4090 still holds up
The RTX 4090 remains a ferociously capable 4K card, and with the 5090 selling for double its MSRP, plenty of buyers concluded that a used 4090 at 30 percent less performance was the saner purchase. The 5080's 16GB problem
The RTX 5080 launched at $999 with 16GB of GDDR7, half the 5090's frame buffer, and lands well behind it in raw performance. AMD ceded the top
AMD chose not to chase the halo tier this generation, aiming its Radeon lineup at the mainstream and midrange instead. A Super refresh, but don't bet on a discount
NVIDIA has run Super mid-cycle refreshes before, and a 50-series Super lineup is a reasonable expectation for 2026 into 2027. In a normal market a refresh would pressure prices downward; in this one, higher-capacity GDDR7 could just as easily arrive at a premium. Bet on more VRAM and better efficiency before you bet on lower prices.
The connector reckoning is overdue
The 12VHPWR story has now spanned two flagship generations without a recall or a fundamental redesign. Either NVIDIA reintroduces per-pin load balancing on a future board, the fix it already shipped on the 3090 Ti, or the melting-plug headlines continue into the next architecture. Regulatory or class-action pressure in a major market is no longer far-fetched. Until then, cap your power limit and seat your cable like it matters, because it does.
