THE MACHINE’S VERDICT
A caravan shmup that shoves more sprites at the NES than the hardware was ever promised — and gets away with it.
Blade Buster is a 2010 freeware shmup from High Level Challenge, and it is something of a flex. Built in the caravan score-attack tradition — timed 2- or 5-minute runs designed for chasing high scores rather than reaching an ending — it throws swarms of sprites and oversized bosses at a 1983 machine with 2KB of RAM and somehow keeps its composure.
The technical confidence is the headline, but the design holds up underneath it: the short-run structure makes it endlessly replayable and ideal for the leaderboard-minded. The caveat is genre-shaped. If timed score-attack shooters leave you cold, the absence of a traditional campaign will too, and the difficulty assumes you want to be pushed. For shmup players and anyone who appreciates homebrew that genuinely tests the silicon, this is one of the NES scene's standout cartridges.

THE STORY BEHIND THIS CARTRIDGE
Blade Buster is a shmup game built by High Level Challenge and released in 2010 under freeware — meaning the developer chose to make it free and redistributable, which is the only reason it can live on this shelf. A caravan-style score-attack shmup with swarms of sprites, massive bosses, and 2- or 5-minute runs. It throws more sprites at the NES than the NES was ever promised. The hardware does not complain. Neither will you, eventually. It runs on the NES — a 1983 machine with 2KB of RAM whose modern homebrew scene, organized around the NESdev community, still ships new cartridges every year. Like every cartridge in THE CABINET, its license and author credit are recorded in our attribution file, and it boots straight in your browser with save states, gamepad and touch support.
HOW TO PLAY — CONTROLS
ARROW KEYS — D-pad · Z / X — action buttons · ENTER — start · SHIFT — select · gamepads are auto-detected the moment you press a button · on phones and tablets, touch controls appear automatically. Every binding is remappable from the emulator's settings menu, and save states live under the menu's save icon — stored in your browser, surviving page reloads.

- Can I play Blade Buster on my phone?
- Yes. Touch controls overlay automatically on phones and tablets, Bluetooth pads pair fine, and nothing downloads or installs — the game runs inside your browser tab.
- What about saving?
- Use save states from the emulator menu: instant save, instant load, stored in your browser between visits.
