THE MACHINE’S VERDICT

An action-RPG starring an electric crustacean that's far more competent than its premise has any right to be.

Shock Lobster (Dave VanEe / tbsp, 2021, Zlib) is an action-RPG for the original Game Boy in which you are a lobster with electric powers, working through aquatic dungeons, talking to NPCs, taking quests and upgrading abilities. The premise is deliberately absurd; the execution is not. Building a Zelda-shaped action-RPG — real-time combat, an overworld of sorts, dialogue, progression — on Game Boy hardware is ambitious, and VanEe (also responsible for the falling-block oddity Adjustris) shows genuine range pulling it off. It's authored and real-time where the shelf's roguelikes are rolled and turn-based, which makes it the more conventional comfort food of the bunch. The scope is modest by RPG standards and the systems are lean rather than sprawling, but it's coherent, charming and complete. Recommended for anyone who wants a proper little adventure on the handheld, electric crustacean included.

THE STORY BEHIND THIS CARTRIDGE

Shock Lobster is a adventure game built by Dave VanEe (tbsp) and released in 2021 under Zlib — meaning the developer chose to make it free and redistributable, which is the only reason it can live on this shelf. An action-RPG for original Game Boy: you are a lobster with electric powers on a quest through aquatic dungeons, fighting enemies and talking to NPCs. A lobster conducts electricity through a dungeon and saves the sea floor. The species normally communicates by urinating from its face; becoming an RPG protagonist is an objective improvement. Same author as Adjustris. Apparently a wide range. It targets the original Game Boy, whose current homebrew wave — powered by the gbdev community, GBDK and GB Studio — is the most active in retro gaming. Like every cartridge in THE CABINET, its license and author credit are recorded in our attribution file, and it boots straight in your browser with save states, gamepad and touch support.

HOW TO PLAY — CONTROLS

ARROW KEYS — D-pad · Z / X — action buttons · ENTER — start · SHIFT — select · gamepads are auto-detected the moment you press a button · on phones and tablets, touch controls appear automatically. Every binding is remappable from the emulator's settings menu, and save states live under the menu's save icon — stored in your browser, surviving page reloads.

NO-NONSENSE ANSWERS

Why is Shock Lobster free — what's the catch?
No catch: the developer chose to release it free. That's the homebrew tradition on the Game Boy, and the license that allows it is documented per-title in our attribution file. We add nothing — no ads in the game, no account wall.
Does Shock Lobster work on mobile devices?
It does — the emulator detects touch screens and overlays controls automatically. Controllers work too, on every platform.
Can I save mid-game?
Yes — open the emulator menu and use save states. They persist in your browser, so you can close the tab and resume later.
