THE MACHINE’S VERDICT

An entire SimCity-style simulation running on a Game Boy Color — equal parts game and engineering dare.

µCity is the most quietly astonishing thing on this shelf. Antonio Niño Díaz (AntonioND), one of the gbdev community's most respected engineers, built a complete city-building simulation — zoning, power grids, taxes, traffic, disasters — that runs on a 1998 Game Boy Color with 32KB of RAM, and released the whole thing open-source under the GPL. As a feat of constrained engineering it's close to unbelievable, and the design is no afterthought: it's a real, playable sim, not a screenshot dressed up as one. The trade-offs are inherent to the canvas — a tiny screen, deliberate pacing, and the management depth a handheld of that era can hold rather than that of its desktop ancestors. Patience is required. But for anyone who admires ambition meeting hard limits, this is essential. A landmark homebrew. Play it slowly.

THE STORY BEHIND THIS CARTRIDGE

µCity (micro-City) is a complete city-building simulation that runs on a Game Boy Color — traffic, power grids, taxes, disasters — written by Antonio Niño Díaz (AntonioND), one of the most respected engineers in the gbdev community. The entire game is open source under the GPL and stands as a kind of dare: if someone can fit SimCity into 32KB of RAM on a 1998 handheld, what excuse does anyone have? Slow, thoughtful, and absurdly ambitious.

HOW TO PLAY — CONTROLS

ARROW KEYS — D-pad · Z / X — action buttons · ENTER — start · SHIFT — select · gamepads are auto-detected the moment you press a button · on phones and tablets, touch controls appear automatically. Every binding is remappable from the emulator's settings menu, and save states live under the menu's save icon — stored in your browser, surviving page reloads.

COMMON QUESTIONS, UNCOMMON HONESTY

Why is µCity free — what's the catch?
No catch: the developer chose to release it free. That's the homebrew tradition on the Game Boy Color, and the license that allows it is documented per-title in our attribution file. We add nothing — no ads in the game, no account wall.
Does µCity work on mobile devices?
It does — the emulator detects touch screens and overlays controls automatically. Controllers work too, on every platform.
Can I save mid-game?
Yes — open the emulator menu and use save states. They persist in your browser, so you can close the tab and resume later.
