Analogue 3D 2026: 11 Firmware Builds Add Save States
Analogue does not do patch notes the way anyone else does patch notes. It does not tease them, it does not publish a roadmap, and it certainly does not email you. It drops a numbered build on a support page with a file size and an MD5 checksum, and it lets you find it. Since the Analogue 3D shipped on 18 November 2025, it has done this eleven times.
The result is a machine materially different from the one reviewers unboxed at launch. The silicon has not moved — an Intel Cyclone 10 GX FPGA with around 220,000 logic elements, four real N64 controller ports, a real cartridge slot, HDMI 2.1 out to 4K HDR. Everything around the silicon has. In eight months the $249.99 box gained save states, a fix that finally made flash carts behave, HDR tuning for OLED panels, bit-perfect screenshots, and — in the newest build — internal upscaling on a console whose entire founding pitch was that it would never upscale anything. This is the story of those eleven builds, the accuracy fight running underneath them, and where the cadence points next.
1.5.0 and the Upscaling U-Turn
What shipped on 21 July 2026
Firmware 1.5.0 is the current build, and it is the one that should make purists sit up. Analogue's own changelog describes an internal graphical upscaling feature in which, verbatim, “resolution is doubled horizontally for twice as many pixels onscreen without affecting 2D graphics.” It rides on RDP and VI enhancements, and Analogue insists it costs nothing in timing or performance — no added latency, no frame drops, no accuracy penalty. The same build folded in Quick Loading for near-instant Memory restores, a new “Recent Memory” startup action, RSP fixes, and 8BitDo N64 Modkit compatibility. It weighs in around 22MB, and yes, there is a checksum.
Why doubling pixels is a philosophical problem
Analogue built its brand on a single word: accuracy. No emulation, no upscaling, no interpretation — just an FPGA behaving like the original chip and outputting exactly what the original chip would have drawn, then cleanly scaled to your panel. Internal upscaling is a different animal. Doubling horizontal resolution means the machine is now drawing pixels the Nintendo 64 never drew. That is a good thing for anyone who has squinted at GoldenEye's 320-pixel-wide mud, and a heresy for anyone who bought a 3D specifically because it wasn't an emulator with a resolution slider. Analogue splitting the difference — higher horizontal detail, untouched 2D and HUD layers — is a careful compromise, and it tells you the company is now optimizing for how N64 games look, not just how faithfully they run. The news is the cadence, not any one feature
Any single one of these builds would be a footnote. The pattern is the story. A launch console that reviewed as “great hardware, static software” has, through pure firmware, added the two features enthusiasts complained loudest about at launch — save states and working flash-cart libraries — plus a rolling series of display and quality-of-life fixes. Analogue is treating a fixed-function retro console like a live-service platform, and doing it without a marketing beat behind a single release.

Reading the gaps
The 63-day jump from 1.1.9 to 1.2.0 is the outlier, and it is exactly where you would expect one: December and January, holidays and a hardware ramp. Everything after it is disciplined. Seven builds between late January and late April averaged a release every 14 days — that is a release train, not a series of emergencies. When the interval widened again in May, June and July, it was because the payloads got heavier: a save-state system, a screenshot pipeline, an upscaler. Analogue front-loaded stability, then spent the back half of the cycle on features.
What the version numbers tell you
Analogue's numbering is not decorative. The 1.2.x string — six builds deep — was the bug-and-compatibility phase. The jumps to 1.3.0, 1.4.0 and 1.5.0 each mark a genuine feature tier: state saving, capture, and upscaling respectively. If you want to know whether an Analogue build is worth grabbing immediately, the second digit is your tell. A minor-minor bump is housekeeping; a minor bump is a new capability.
Memories: Save States, Finally
How the feature works
Build 1.3.0, on 15 May 2026, is the update N64 owners had wanted since the cartridge era: real save states on original hardware behavior. Analogue brands them Memories. You get up to 20 per game, stored per-title in the 3DOS library and reachable from the in-game menu. Fill the list and the oldest Memory is deleted automatically — unless you pin one, which locks it against the cull. It is a quicksave system bolted onto a console that, by the strictest reading of Analogue's own accuracy gospel, should not have one. Engadget's Jackson Chen framed it plainly: this adds “modern convenience” to Analogue's N64 remake, “letting 3D owners generate up to 20 save files with Memories,” with a pin so a chosen state survives the auto-deletion.
The hotkeys
Memories are triggered on the pad, no menu required. On the 8BitDo 64 controller you hold Home and tap D-Pad Up to snapshot; on an original N64 controller the combo is Z, Start and C-Up together. The N64's save ecosystem was a mess of battery-backed SRAM, EEPROM, and the fragile Controller Pak. Memories sidesteps all of it. Just as importantly, 1.3.0 fixed saving across different Controller Paks — a genuine pain for anyone rotating between an original pad and a modern one. For a console sold on authenticity, the quiet admission here is that authenticity has limits, and that being able to bail out of the fourth hour of a Ocarina of Time Water Temple session is worth bending the doctrine for.
The 1.2.4 Flash-Cart Fix
The bug that shipped at launch
At launch, the Analogue 3D treated a flash cart as one game. Load an EverDrive 64 or a SummerCart 64, and no matter which of your 300 ROMs you booted, the console saw a single cartridge with a single identity. That meant one shared virtual Controller Pak, one shared set of display and controller settings, and the very real risk of save-file collisions — swap Zelda out for Mario Kart 64 and the machine could mix up which save belonged to which game. For a device that costs a quarter of a grand and courts exactly the enthusiast who owns a flash cart, that was a glaring hole.
What 1.2.4 actually changed
The 28 March 2026 build fixed it with what Analogue calls, in the patch notes, “Advanced Library detection for variable game headers. If a cartridge changes its header, this is detected, added, and tracked in the Library.” In plain terms, the console now reads the ROM header on every boot, notices when it has changed, and files each title as its own library entry with its own saves, its own virtual Controller Pak, and its own settings. Notebookcheck's Rahim Amir Noorali reported that the update “treats every ROM loaded onto the same cartridge as a separate entry” and “detects each game header change and treats every title as its own unique game in the library,” singling out EverDrive and SummerCart 64 owners as the winners.
The tell in the timing
Analogue shipped this with zero fanfare — no blog post, no social push, just a support-page bump. That is the whole editorial point. The most consequential real-world fix in the entire firmware run, the one that turned a $250 accessory-hostile box into something a serious collector could actually build a library around, arrived as line items in a 1.2.4 housekeeping build. The Cycle-Accuracy Fight
Kaze Emanuar calls the bluff
The uncomfortable subtext under every one of these builds is a dispute about whether the Analogue 3D is as accurate as Analogue says. In December 2025, veteran N64 homebrew developer Kaze Emanuar — the man behind some of the most technically aggressive N64 romhacks in existence — ran the machine against real silicon and did not mince words. Per Notebookcheck's write-up, he measured the 3D's CPU at roughly 6% slower than an original N64 and its RSP, the geometry-crunching half of the Reality Coprocessor, at around 30% slower, with about a 5% overall performance lag in typical gameplay and Diddy Kong Racing running some 4% down on frame rate. He also flagged the absence of the N64's secret ninth megabyte of RAM that some homebrew leans on. His verdict, verbatim: “This thing is nowhere near cycle accurate.”
Unleashed mode flips the script
Here is where it gets interesting, and where the firmware ties back in. The Analogue 3D ships with a baked-in overclock that Engadget documented as four tiers — Auto, Enhanced, Enhanced+ and Unleashed — running at Auto by default. At full send, Unleashed pushes the machine to roughly 33% faster CPU and 50% faster RCP than a real N64. So the same console that runs 6% slow at stock can be dialed to run comfortably faster than the hardware it imitates, smoothing out the framerate dips that plagued the original library. Firmware 1.1.9, the very first post-launch build, led with “substantial upgrades to Unleashed mode overclock,” alongside a manual region selector and a texture-filtering toggle. Digital Foundry's review headline — that the 3D “overclocks the N64 in stellar fashion” — was not accidental.
Both things are true
The reconciliation is that Analogue is selling two different machines behind one shell. Set to stock timing, it is a very good but not perfectly cycle-accurate N64 that a determined developer can catch out. Set to Unleashed, it is a deliberately better-than-original N64 that runs the classics smoother than they ever ran in 1997. Purists who want reference-grade timing have a legitimate gripe; everyone who just wants Perfect Dark to stop chugging has a toggle. The accuracy debate is real, but it is not the same argument as “is this a good way to play,” and it is worth keeping the two separate.
HDMI, HDR and Screenshots
The unglamorous middle of the timeline
Between the flashy features sit the builds that made the thing usable. 1.2.0, the big January release, fixed HDMI handshake problems, added Force Progressive Output for clean progressive-scan on modern panels, and brought support for the Nintendo Switch Online N64 controller — while warning owners of older 8BitDo pads to update their controller firmware. It also disabled Expansion Pak behavior for the USA release of Space Station Silicon Valley specifically, because that combination triggered a game-breaking bug. That is the level of per-title granularity Analogue is now patching at.
Display tuning for the OLED era
Build 1.2.5 in April was aimed squarely at people running the 3D on a high-end OLED: it added Advanced HDR, exposed a new maximum-luminance control under display settings, added an alphabetical jump in the library, and — correcting a genuinely annoying bug — stopped ALLM and HDR from misapplying on 1080p displays. Two weeks later, 1.2.6 chased a progressive-output flicker issue (visible in Resident Evil 2, of all things), added nine cartridge colors to the library art, let long game titles scroll, and refined the auto-overclock behavior. None of this makes a headline. All of it is the difference between a console that feels finished and one that feels like a beta.
Screenshots, and the one thing still missing
Build 1.4.0 in June added a screenshot system and a 4K HDR gallery, capturing “definitive recreations of original CRT displays… for the first time in bit-perfect 4K HDR,” in Analogue's phrasing. It is a lovely feature with one obvious gap, and MMORPG.com's Joseph Bradford named it: “I do wish that the A3D had a WiFi feature so I could simply upload the screenshots direct from the console.” There is no wireless on the 3D. Your captures live on the microSD, and getting them off means pulling the card. Hold that thought — it feeds directly into the predictions.
From Nt to 3D: A Decade of FPGA
Analogue's back catalogue
To understand why eleven firmware builds is on brand, you have to understand Analogue's decade. The company made its name turning classic consoles into field-programmable hardware: the Nt and Nt Mini for the NES, the Super Nt for the SNES in 2018, the Mega Sg for Genesis in 2019, and the Analogue Pocket handheld in late 2021. Every one of them was a bet that an FPGA — a chip that reconfigures its own logic gates to become the original silicon rather than emulate it in software — could deliver cartridge-slot authenticity with modern outputs. The Pocket shipped with a fraction of the features it has now; the 3D is on the same trajectory, just faster and more public. Where the 3D wins and loses
Against real silicon, the 3D wins on convenience and on getting 4K to a modern TV without a $750 RetroTink 4K in the chain — and it now matches original hardware nowhere on accuracy but beats it on features it never had. Against a MiSTer build, the 3D loses hard on breadth — MiSTer plays 50-plus systems, the 3D plays exactly one — but wins on polish and plug-and-play. The genuinely awkward comparison is software: a modern build of Ares on a cheap mini-PC is arguably more cycle-accurate than the 3D at stock timing, costs nothing if you already own the hardware, and upscales as far as you like.
The emulation asterisk
What software cannot do is take your actual cartridge. That is the entire remaining moat, and it is a real one for collectors: the 3D reads the physical PCB you own, low latency, no ROM-legality asterisk, into a real N64 controller port. If that does not move you, a full RetroArch cores setup or a Batocera install will play the same games for the price of a download. The 3D is not competing on cost. It is competing on being the only 4K FPGA that eats carts.

The launch verdicts
The professional consensus at launch was warm, with a consistent caveat. Digital Foundry called it “the most impressive Analogue ‘FPGA’ console yet.” IGN's Seth G. Macy scored it 8/10 and called it “the best possible way to play your N64 library outside of the original hardware hooked up to a CRT.” Eurogamer landed on “another best-in-class retro experience,” and GamesRadar+ said it “sets a new bar for retro console remakes.” The Verge praised its refined industrial design and the flexibility of its filters and display options, calling it a machine built for the hardcore enthusiast.
The recurring caveat
The knock was never on Analogue — it was on the N64 itself. Engadget's Tim Stevens summed the tension up in a line that could serve as the whole product's epitaph: “your Nintendo 64 games never looked so good, but Analogue's greatest system yet can't fix some of the N64's inherent flaws.” No amount of 4K upscaling or CRT emulation rewrites a library that shipped with 20fps targets and fog for draw-distance. That is a fair point, and it is also the one thing firmware genuinely can chip away at — which is exactly what Unleashed mode and the 1.5.0 upscaler are doing.
How the firmware changed the scorecard
Here is the part the launch reviews could not account for: half the criticisms have since been patched. “No save states” — fixed in 1.3.0. “Flash carts are a mess” — fixed in 1.2.4. “HDR is fiddly on OLED” — addressed in 1.2.5. “The framerate still dips” — partially answered by the overclock tiers and the upscaler. Five Predictions Through 2027
Near-term: the obvious gaps
These are not wild swings. They are the logical next moves given the trajectory of the eleven builds so far.
- Wireless, or a companion app, to move captures. The screenshot gallery is stranded on the microSD with no way off but pulling the card — the exact complaint reviewers raised. Expect Analogue to answer it, most likely with a companion-app or USB-transfer path rather than adding radios to shipped hardware. Call it before mid-2027.
- Expansion Pak and edge-case RAM handling gets systematized. Analogue is already disabling Expansion Pak behavior per-title (see Space Station Silicon Valley) and Kaze flagged the missing ninth megabyte. A general per-game RAM/Expansion profile system is the natural consolidation of a dozen one-off fixes.
- An official developer mode or a community jailbreak. The Analogue Pocket got openFPGA and community cores within months of launch. The 3D's FPGA is capable hardware sitting idle at one system; either Analogue opens a sanctioned path or the scene forces one. Twelve months feels generous.
Longer shots worth watching
- 64DD support, in firmware or as an accessory. The N64's ill-fated disk drive is the last unconquered corner of the platform. With flash-cart handling now mature, a 64DD compatibility layer — covering the likes of the F-Zero X Expansion Kit — is the sort of preservation flex Analogue loves. Lower probability, high delight if it lands.
- Price volatility and limited colorways, not a permanent cut. The $249.99-to-$269.99 restock wobble was tariff-driven, and Analogue's playbook — straight from the Pocket — is limited-edition color drops at or above MSRP, not discounts. Expect new shell colors and steady-or-rising pricing rather than a sale.
The one that would change everything
The genuine wildcard is whether the 1.5.0 upscaler is the start of a slippery slope. Once a company that swore off upscaling ships an upscaler, the next request — higher internal render resolution, texture options, widescreen hacks — gets easier to justify each time. If Analogue keeps walking that road, the 3D stops being a purist's FPGA and becomes a very fancy hardware emulator with a cart slot. What the firmware run actually proves
Eleven builds in eight months is not a company patching a broken product. It is a company that treats a $249.99 fixed-function retro console as a platform it intends to keep improving for years — and, on the evidence, is better at it than most live-service studios shipping games that cost ten times as much. The Analogue 3D you can buy today saves states, manages flash-cart libraries properly, tunes itself to your OLED, takes bit-perfect screenshots, and upscales when you ask it to. None of that was true at launch. All of it arrived for free, on a support page, with a checksum and no press release.
The honest caveats
The accuracy fight is real and unresolved: at stock timing this is a very good N64, not a perfect one, and a determined developer will keep finding the seams. The upscaler is a philosophical crack in the foundation that Analogue will have to decide how far to widen. And there is still no way to get your screenshots off the thing without a card reader. If your priority is reference-grade cycle accuracy for free, a modern Ares build on a cheap PC is the sharper tool.
Who should care
But if you own N64 cartridges, own a 4K panel, and want the least-compromised way to marry the two without a $750 scaler and a CRT in the closet, the eleven-build firmware run has turned the Analogue 3D into the strongest answer on the market — and it is a better machine this month than it was last month, which is a sentence you cannot write about the console sitting under your TV. Analogue is playing a long game with this hardware. Eight months in, the scoreboard says it is winning.
