When the Analogue 3D shipped last November, the FPGA-based Nintendo 64 recreation arrived with a launch-day asterisk longer than its feature list. No save states. No screenshots. A library that could not tell two ROMs on the same flash cart apart. And an accuracy pitch that a veteran N64 developer would publicly take apart inside of a month.

Eight months and eleven firmware builds later, most of that list has quietly evaporated. The newest drop, version 1.5.0, released on July 21, 2026, does the one thing Analogue's entire "original hardware, original resolution" positioning implied it never would: it upscales your N64 games. This is a news piece about a console that has been rebuilt in public, one .bin file at a time — and about the fine print Analogue would rather you skim past.

1.5.0 and the Upscaling Line

What Internal Graphical Upscaling actually does

Analogue's own patch notes describe 1.5.0's headline feature as "Internal Graphical Upscaling," a rendering change that "enhances detail and clarity while remaining faithful to the original hardware rendering process." In plain terms: the console now doubles horizontal resolution internally through the RDP and VI — the N64's rasterizer and video interface — so you get twice as many pixels across the frame without touching the 2D layer. Text, HUDs and sprite work are left alone; the polygon soup gets the extra samples. Time Extension called it "A Game Changer," which is the kind of headline Analogue's marketing department does not have to pay for.

The 'no timing hit' claim, examined

The interesting part is what Analogue insists it did not break. The company says the upscaling ships with "no impact to timing authenticity or performance," and that it is "synergistic with all Analogue Original Display Modes" — the CRT-emulation filters that were the 3D's original reason to exist. That is a heavy claim on a field-programmable gate array: you are asking the same logic fabric to push more pixels per frame without slipping a single cycle of the N64's notoriously fussy timing. If it holds up under a frame counter, it is a genuinely clever piece of engineering. If it does not, the accuracy crowd — more on them below — will find out within a weekend and post the graphs.

Quick Load and the quieter fixes

1.5.0 is not only about pixels. "Quick Loading a Memory is now instant," per the notes, and a new startup action boots you straight into your most recent save state. Under the hood, Analogue says it "fully implemented" RSP scalar/vector interlock behavior and RSP branch and dual-instruction behavior — accuracy plumbing that speaks directly to the criticism the console took in December. There is expanded progressive-video support to kill jitter in stubborn titles, dynamic in-game-menu opacity, a reshuffled Advanced settings menu, and a fistful of 8BitDo N64 Modkit fixes covering simultaneous button presses and USB rumble. Eleven Updates in Eight Months

From launch build to 1.5.0

The 3D shipped on November 18, 2025 running firmware 1.1.0. Ten days later, 1.1.9 landed with manual region selection, a "Disable Texture Filtering" toggle, improved handling of oddballs like Bomberman Hero (PAL) and Super Smash Bros., and the first round of overclock adjustments. Then Analogue went quiet over the holidays and came back swinging in 2026: a build roughly every two to four weeks from late January through April, then monthly through summer. That is eleven updates since launch — a cadence more common to a live-service game than to a $250 lump of retro hardware.

What the pace signals

Two things. First, Analogue shipped the 3D deliberately unfinished — the launch reviews were assessing a console that did not yet do half of what it does today. Second, the roadmap has an obvious shape: metadata fixes first (playtime bugs, library detection), then the crowd-pleasers (save states, screenshots), then the technically ambitious swing (upscaling). If you bought at launch and shelved the thing, the machine on your shelf is materially different from the one in the box. Memories: Save States on Silicon

How Memories works

Firmware 1.3.0, on May 15, 2026, was the update N64 owners had spent months asking for: save states, which Analogue insists on branding "Memories." You freeze a game exactly where it sits and return to that precise moment later, and Analogue says it works across the full 900-plus N64 cartridge library. Crucially, the feature is implemented without breaking accessory support — the Transfer Pak still talks to Pokemon Stadium's GB Tower with a Memory hanging over the session. GenerationAmiga flatly called it "the update N64 fans have been waiting for," and for once the hyperbole was earned.

The twenty-slot ceiling

Each game currently holds up to twenty Memories. Once you hit the cap, the oldest slot is auto-deleted unless you have pinned it — a sane default that keeps the metadata store from ballooning while protecting the save you actually care about. 1.5.0 later made loading one instant and added a startup action that drops you into your most recent Memory the moment the console powers on. It is the closest a cartridge-based FPGA machine has ever come to feeling like a modern console's quick-resume.

Why save states on FPGA are hard

On a software emulator, a save state is a memory dump — trivial. On the 3D there is no host operating system underneath doing the bookkeeping; you are snapshotting the live state of reconfigurable logic that is imitating a Reality Coprocessor cycle by cycle, RDRAM and all, then restoring it without desyncing the hardware timing Analogue spent years chasing. That the feature arrived seven months after launch, rather than on day one, tells you it was not an afterthought so much as a genuinely thorny problem.

4K HDR capture, finally

Firmware 1.4.0, on June 23, 2026, added the other launch omission: screenshots. Analogue lets you capture stills "exactly as Analogue 3D renders it with Original Display Modes," then preview, configure and export them in lossless 4K with HDR intact. The captures live in a clean, chronological Gallery view. Hotkeys vary by controller — the Star button on the 8BitDo 64, the dedicated Capture button on the Nintendo Switch Online pad, and a Z+Start+R chord on an original N64 controller — which is a tidy way to bolt a modern feature onto three decades of button layouts.

The export problem nobody can patch

Here is the catch, and it is a hardware one: the 3D has no Wi-Fi radio. Your bit-perfect 4K CRT-emulated screenshots have exactly one way off the console, and it is the microSD card you pull out and walk to a computer. Reviewing the 1.4.0 update, Joseph Bradford at MMORPG.com put it bluntly: "I do wish that the A3D had a WiFi feature so I could simply upload the screenshots direct from the console." No firmware update solders in an antenna. This is the ceiling firmware keeps bumping against.

What the reviewers made of it

The Gallery landed well because it fixed a genuine grievance rather than inventing a new one. It also underscored the strangeness of the 3D's launch strategy: a $250 console sold on the promise of pristine 4K output that, for its first seven months, could not let you save a single frame of that output. By the time capture arrived, the machine had already accumulated more post-launch features than some consoles get in their entire lives.

The Flash-Cart Fix

The one-entry-per-cartridge problem

Before firmware 1.2.4, the 3D had an ugly blind spot for the people most likely to buy it: flash-cart owners. Load a dozen ROMs off an EverDrive 64 or a SummerCart 64 and the console collapsed all of them into a single library entry. One playtime figure. One set of (now, Memory) metadata. No way to tell Ocarina of Time from Mario 64 if they lived on the same cart. For a library-obsessed machine, that was a real defect.

How 1.2.4 solved it

On March 28, 2026, 1.2.4 shipped "Advanced Library detection for variable game headers." The console now reads each ROM's header and treats every title as its own library entry — with its own Memories, its own rumble configuration, its own Controller Pak data — even when they share a cartridge. Reporting the change, Notebookcheck's Rahim Amir Noorali noted that "switching between ROMs now automatically creates new entries," solving a headache that had dogged flash-cart users since launch.

What it means for preservation-minded owners

This is the update that signalled Analogue actually understood its buyers. A single EverDrive 64 X7, incidentally, runs roughly $175 to $215; treating it as a first-class citizen rather than one undifferentiated blob was overdue.

Unleashed: The Built-In Overclock

Four tiers, on by default

The 3D's most philosophically loaded feature was baked in from the start. As Engadget's Tim Stevens documented in the launch review, the console offers adjustable performance settings running from "Auto" — which overclocks by default — through "Enhanced," "Enhanced+" and "Unleashed," with a "Force Original Hardware" toggle for anyone who wants the N64 exactly as it shipped, slowdown and all. Unleashed mode has been reported to push the RCP roughly 50% faster and the CPU around a third faster, enough to melt away the frame drops that plagued titles like Perfect Dark and GoldenEye 007.

1.1.9 and the tuning

Analogue has kept its hands on these dials throughout the update cycle. 1.1.9 touched the overclock modes directly at the end of November 2025, and 1.2.6 later refined the "Auto" overclock's behavior. The point is that overclocking is not some hidden developer setting here — it is a front-facing, actively maintained part of the product, which is a striking stance for a company whose brand is built on fidelity.

Purity versus performance

And there is the tension. The 3D ships with a mode that runs your games faster than a real N64 ever did — and, as we will see, a documented case that at stock speed it actually runs slower than one. Analogue's answer is to give you a switch and let you pick your poison. That is the honest move. It also quietly concedes that "original hardware" is a setting on this console, not a guarantee.

The Cycle-Accuracy Problem

What Kaze Emanuar found

In December 2025, veteran N64 developer Kaze Emanuar — a man who writes hand-optimized N64 assembly for fun — published a side-by-side test video and did not mince words. Analogue's marketing leaned hard on cycle accuracy and "100% compatibility." Emanuar's verdict, as reported by Notebookcheck: "This thing is nowhere near cycle accurate." Time Extension ran its coverage under the headline "They Lied."

The numbers

The specifics matter, so here they are. Against original hardware, Emanuar measured the 3D's CPU running about 6% slower, its RSP — the N64's geometry processor — a startling 30% slower, and overall performance lagging roughly 5% in most gameplay scenarios; Diddy Kong Racing, for instance, ran nearly 4% below native frame rates. He also found the console could not access the N64's secret ninth megabyte of RAM. To be fair to the 3D, Emanuar still rates it a strong, affordable option for most players and explicitly noted that firmware updates might address many of the issues.

How firmware is answering

Which is exactly what appears to be happening — slowly, and without a formal rebuttal from Analogue. The RSP "scalar/vector interlock" and "branch and dual instruction" behaviors that 1.5.0 claims to have "fully implemented" are aimed squarely at the geometry processor Emanuar singled out. Analogue would rather ship fixes than issue statements. For speedrunners, modders and preservationists, the machine is a moving target: better than it was in December, not yet the reference, and worth re-testing with every build.

How We Got Here

From the Nt to the 3D

Analogue has spent a decade turning FPGAs into museum-grade console clones: the Nt for the NES in 2014, the Super Nt in 2018, the Mega Sg in 2019, the pocketable Pocket in 2021, the Duo in 2023, and now the 3D. Each one recreates its target console in reconfigurable logic rather than software emulation, which is why the launch omissions stung — Analogue's whole reputation is "it just works, and it works right."

Why the N64 was the hard one

The N64 is the boss level of FPGA recreation. Its Reality Coprocessor pairs a rasterizing RDP with a microcode-driven RSP, and games routinely shipped their own custom microcode, meaning "compatibility" is a moving target rather than a fixed spec. That is a large part of why the accuracy debate exists at all, and why the 3D leans on a beefy Intel Cyclone 10 GX FPGA with roughly 220,000 logic elements to pull it off. It is also the first Analogue console to output 4K over HDMI 2.1, with HDR and VRR.

Announced 2023, shipped 2025

The road was not short. Analogue announced the 3D on October 16, 2023, then pushed it from an early-2025 window into summer, then late August, then Q4, before it finally shipped on November 18, 2025 at $249.99. A quick tariff-driven restock on November 24 nudged the price to $269.99, and the separate 8BitDo 64 controller runs $39.99. Analogue includes a 16 GB microSD card in the box — which, given everything the firmware now writes to it, was foresight.

Analogue 3D vs. Everything Else

vs. MiSTer and software emulation

The 3D does not exist in a vacuum. The open-source MiSTer project has an N64 core, but it remains experimental and demands a DE10-Nano board plus add-ons and a tolerance for tinkering. Software emulation via RetroArch cores like mupen64plus-next and ParaLLEl-RDP is free, wildly flexible and, on a strong GPU, can out-upscale anything Analogue ships — but it is emulation, with input lag and per-game quirks, and it lives in the legal grey zone that a folder of ROMs always does. vs. a real N64 on a CRT

The purist's answer is still an original N64 on a CRT — and per Kaze Emanuar's testing, that remains the timing reference the 3D is measured against, not the other way around. But a real N64 tops out at 240p over composite, cannot save state, and will not screenshot anything. The 3D's pitch is that it reads your actual cartridges — sidestepping the legal cloud over ROMs — while adding 4K output, save states, capture and, now, upscaling. It is a different value proposition, not strictly a better console.

What Happens Next

The next six months of firmware

Expect the cadence to cool. With the big three — save states, screenshots, upscaling — now shipped, Analogue has cleared its headline backlog, and the next builds should skew toward maintenance: per-game compatibility fixes, more RSP/RDP accuracy work, and refinements to the overclock and upscaling toggles. A reasonable bet for late 2026 or early 2027 is a bump to the upscaling itself — 1.5.0 only doubles the horizontal axis, and vertical or integer-style scaling is the obvious follow-up, still wrapped in Analogue's "faithful to original rendering" language.

The hardware ceiling

Some wishes firmware simply cannot grant. Joseph Bradford's plea for cloud screenshot uploads runs headlong into the fact that this unit has no Wi-Fi radio; barring a hardware revision, capture export stays a microSD-and-sneakernet affair. That is the pattern to watch — Analogue can keep rewriting the logic all day, but the physical I/O is fixed. Anything requiring a component that is not on the board will wait for a 3D revision, not a 1.6.

The accuracy reckoning

The through-line is simple, and a little subversive: Analogue sold a console on the promise of the past and has spent eight months dragging it into the present. Tim Stevens' launch verdict at Engadget still fits the machine as it stands today — "Analogue's greatest system is a powerful ode to a classic Nintendo console, but it can't fix all of the N64's flaws" — and IGN's Seth G. Macy called it the best possible way to play your N64 library outside of original hardware on a CRT. Both were reviewing a very different console than the one you would update to tonight. The hardware has not changed since November. Everything else has.
