The MiSTer FPGA scene has spent most of a decade handing newcomers the same homework assignment: buy a Terasic DE10-Nano development board, then a RAM module, then an I/O board, then a USB hub, then a case, then solder the analog daughterboard, then flash an SD card and pray the HDMI handshake holds. The MiSTer Multisystem 2 exists to delete that sentence. It is an all-in-one FPGA console — one board, one enclosure, one power brick — that runs the same MiSTer cores as the hand-assembled enthusiast stack without making you assemble the stack.

It is also, in a detail that belongs printed on the box, cheaper than the chip inside it. Heber's single-unit price for the Intel/Altera Cyclone V that drives the thing runs to roughly £290 at Mouser. The finished console — case, 128 MB of core RAM, a seven-port powered hub, HDMI, heatsink, the lot — starts at £216. Somewhere a bill-of-materials spreadsheet is quietly performing a magic trick, and the trick is called buying silicon by the reel instead of one at a time.

Here is what is actually shipping in the middle of 2026, what it costs once international shipping and tariffs are finished with you, how it got here from a German Amiga project, and why the arcade board and the handheld teased alongside it matter more than the spec sheet suggests.

What the Multisystem 2 Actually Is

One board instead of a shopping list

Strip away the marketing and the Multisystem 2 is a single custom motherboard with an FPGA soldered to it, wrapped in a 3D-printed enclosure. An FPGA is not an emulator; it is a field-programmable chip physically reconfigured — gate by gate — to become the original console's silicon. Load the SNES core and the fabric wires itself into a Super Nintendo. Load the Neo Geo core and the same chip becomes a Neo Geo. There is no operating-system layer pretending to be old hardware in software, which is the entire reason the MiSTer community tolerated the DE10-Nano assembly ritual for years.

The original MiSTer Multisystem, released in October 2021, already consolidated most of that stack onto a 170 mm × 170 mm mini-ITX board: a V6.1 I/O board, a seven-port USB hub, 128 MB of SDRAM, ADC in and out, a SNAC port, an HDMI isolator, RGB SCART, TOSLINK optical audio and power protection, all in one plane. But it still required you to bring your own DE10-Nano and plug it in like a graphics card. The 2 removes even that.

The Heber and RMC partnership

This is not a lone hacker's Tindie project. The Multisystem line is a collaboration between Heber Ltd — an Aylesbury, UK electronics manufacturer with roughly 35 years in arcade and industrial hardware — and Neil Thomas of RMC / The Retro Collective, the British retro-museum and YouTube operation. Heber does the board design, sourcing and manufacturing; RMC brings the community reach and the retro credibility. Lon Seidman's review credits the device to "RMC's Neil and electronics manufacturer Heber Limited," which is the attribution to trust over any single-name internet rumor.

What "consolised" means when you turn it on

Heber's own product page calls it a "next-generation, all-in-one consolised retro gaming machine" using FPGA hardware emulation plus the MiSTer community's software and scripts. In practice that means the software experience is identical to a hand-built MiSTer: the same SD-card layout, the same on-screen display, the same community updater. If you have ever set up RetroArch's software cores, the MiSTer approach is the hardware-accurate cousin, and the file structure is refreshingly boring:

Format an SD card, drop that tree onto it, run update_all.sh from the on-screen menu, add your own ROMs, and the box does the rest. Hackaday's summary — "just add some ROMs (legally, of course), and you're off" — is not far from the truth.

The DE10-Nano Sandwich Is Gone

Cyclone V, soldered down

The headline engineering change is dull to describe and enormous in effect: the 28 nm Intel/Altera Cyclone V (part number 5CSEBA6U23I7, around 110,000 logic elements, with a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 running at 800 MHz) is soldered directly to the mainboard. No socket, no development board, no stacked "sandwich" of PCBs held together by 2×20 headers. Hackaday put it plainly: "The FPGA is integrated in the mainboard. No RAM modules, no USB hub spaghetti." That sentence is the entire product thesis.

Cheaper than its own chip

Here is the number that should end most arguments. A single Cyclone V of this grade costs about £290.46 at Mouser if you walk up and buy one. A complete Multisystem 2 Digital — that chip, plus a heatsink, 128 MB of SDRAM, 1 GB of LPDDR, a seven-port powered hub, HDMI, an enclosure and a warranty — is £216. The finished console undercuts its own primary component by roughly £74, which only happens when a manufacturer buys silicon by the reel and a hobbyist cannot. It is the single most persuasive line in the Multisystem 2's favor, and the reason building your own from a bare chip makes no economic sense whatsoever.

128 MB SDRAM, 1 GB LPDDR, and no fan

Two memory pools do two jobs: 128 MB of Alliance SDRAM feeds the FPGA cores (SDRAM latency is what lets demanding cores like Saturn and Neo Geo behave), and 1 GB of ISSI LPDDR serves the ARM/Linux "HPS" side that runs the menu and scripts. Cooling is a passive heatsink — no fan, silent operation — and Lon Seidman found the result "thermally balanced, maintaining stability even during intensive tasks." For a device that will sit in a media cabinet next to an Analogue 3D, silence is a feature, not an afterthought.

Pricing: £216, £264, and the $386 Reality

What Heber charges today

As of mid-2026, Heber's shop lists the Digital model at £216 including VAT (£180 ex-VAT) and the Analogue model at £264 including VAT (£220 ex-VAT). Those are not the launch numbers. When pre-orders opened on 6 May 2025, the inc-VAT prices were £204 and £252 — so both SKUs have crept up about £12 in their first year, a modest rise given the DRAM and component pressure that has hammered everything else in this hobby. Power supplies are not included with either version; the board takes a 5 V barrel input rated up to 4 A.

What a US buyer actually pays

The sticker is a UK sticker. Lon Seidman, reviewing the Digital model in March 2026, reported the real landed cost bluntly: "I paid about $386 for mine (including shipping and tariffs)." That is the number Americans should budget against — not the £216 headline, which balloons once international shipping and US import duties are applied. It still lands below a from-scratch DE10-Nano build once you price in every board, but nobody should be surprised when a £216 UK console becomes a roughly $386 US one on the doorstep.

An order queue, not a sales figure

Heber has talked publicly about scaling production in tiers — a "level 10" run of roughly 12,500–13,500 units, with a possible rise to "level 14" near 16,500–17,500. Read those carefully: they describe a numbered fulfilment queue, not consoles already sitting in living rooms. By early 2026 the project had passed roughly 20,000 orders with more than 10,000 fulfilled — impressive demand for a niche FPGA box, but "orders in the queue" and "units sold" are not the same sentence, and coverage that conflates them is overselling the install base.

Digital vs Analogue: What £48 Buys

The Digital board: HDMI and nothing to think about

The Digital model outputs HDMI, full stop (it can also drive Direct Video DAC output, but there are no native analog connectors). You get the Cyclone V with heatsink, 128 MB SDRAM + 1 GB LPDDR, the integrated seven-port powered USB 2.0 hub — Lon counts "four front-facing USB ports, dual rear USB ports" plus an internal header — a full-size SD slot, internal I2C headers and a 10-layer PCB. For anyone playing on a modern TV or an OLED, this is the correct £216 purchase and the analog hardware would be dead weight.

The Analogue board: SCART, VGA, and a real DAC

The £264 Analogue model is the CRT enthusiast's board. On top of everything the Digital has, it adds a 24-bit DAC (18-bit output), a 9-pin mini-DIN RGB / SCART connection with C-Sync, a 15-way VGA output, 3.5 mm and TOSLINK audio, and Ethernet. That £48 premium is entirely about feeding a Sony PVM or a consumer CRT a clean analog signal with proper sync — the reason FPGA exists for a lot of these people in the first place. If your endgame is a Trinitron, buy this one; if it is a 65-inch OLED, do not.

SNAC, Zaparoo, and the 50-way connector

The Analogue board also carries the expansion hardware. A SNAC (Serial Native Accessory Converter) slot under a sliding hatch lets you plug real original controllers — PlayStation, SNES, N64, PC Engine and SEGA Saturn pads — straight into the cores with essentially zero added latency, which Metal Game Solid's reviewer called "a much more elegant solution" than USB adapters. Both models support Zaparoo NFC (tap a token to launch a game), and a new 50-way connector breaks out the roughly 50 previously unused DE10-Nano pins for future add-ons. From MiST to Multisystem: How We Got Here

Harbaum's MiST and Sorgelig's MiSTer

The lineage matters because it explains why this box is a community artifact and not a startup product. It begins with MiST, Till Harbaum's early-2010s FPGA board aimed at recreating the Commodore Amiga and Atari ST. In June 2017, Alexey "Sorgelig" Melnikov forked that idea onto Terasic's DE10-Nano and named it MiSTer — the added "er" a joke, the added Cyclone V horsepower not. The DE10-Nano's cost and availability made MiSTer explode where MiST had stayed niche, and a decade of open-source cores followed.

The original Multisystem, 2021

Heber and RMC's first Multisystem arrived in October 2021 as the "nice case for your MiSTer" that also fixed the hub, RAM and analog mess — the mini-ITX board described above. It ran anywhere from about $300 as a bare board to $510–615 fully kitted once you added your own DE10-Nano and accessories. The Verge's 2021 primer on the scene, still one of the best mainstream explainers, captured why people put up with the hassle: FPGA gets you hardware-level accuracy that software emulation struggles to match.

Open-source hardware, July 2023

In July 2023, Heber published the original Multisystem as open-source hardware — schematics, PCB files and Gerbers in the public domain. That is an unusual move for a company selling the board, and it is load-bearing for the community: it means the platform can outlive any single vendor, be audited, and be forked. It also sets up the Multisystem 2, which is a cleaner, integrated realization of the same open design philosophy rather than a locked-down appliance.

What the Reviewers Actually Found

Lon.TV: thermally balanced, honestly priced

Lon Seidman's March 2026 review is the most useful buyer's document, precisely because it refuses to be breathless. He framed the Multisystem 2 as a device that "bridges the gap between the technical flexibility of the original FPGA development boards and the convenience of a dedicated home console" — which is exactly the job it was built to do — while volunteering the unglamorous $386 landed cost and the passive-cooling stability. When a reviewer leads with what you'll pay and how hot it runs, believe the rest.

Hackaday: out of the tinker cave

Hackaday's hands-on is the quotable one. It called the Multisystem 2 a "surprisingly noob-friendly FPGA console that finally gets the MiSTer experience out of the tinker cave and into the living room," noted that "you don't need to be a soldering wizard to use the thing," and — critically for anyone worried a boutique box might fork the software — confirmed it is "100% compatible with the MiSTer software, but allows some additional future features." It also declined to pretend the platform is flawless, flagging "the usual display inconsistencies and that eternal jungle of controller mappings."

Metal Game Solid: the form factor, and the nitpicks

Metal Game Solid's LSDowdle went furthest, writing that "the Multisystem 2 will be my system of choice for some time to come" and that "all of the cores I use work as expected." The complaints are telling in their smallness: the box is "pretty light and I kinda wish it was taller and had some lead weights in it," and he wants an internal switch between analog outputs and a dual-RAM setup. When the harshest criticism a reviewer can muster is "it should be heavier," the fundamentals are sound.

How It Stacks Up: Analogue, DE10, a Pi

Versus a raw DE10-Nano stack

Against the traditional build-your-own MiSTer, the Multisystem 2's case is airtight on both money and effort. A bare DE10-Nano runs around $225 (academic pricing dips near $190), and that is before RAM, an I/O board, a hub, analog hardware and a case — a stack that routinely crosses $400 assembled and still requires you to do the assembling. The Multisystem 2 delivers the identical core library, pre-integrated, starting at £216. The only reason to still hand-build is if you already own the parts.

Versus Analogue's boutique boxes

Analogue's hardware — the Analogue Pocket and the Analogue 3D — is the polished, closed alternative. Those machines also use FPGAs, but Analogue targets specific systems with jewel-like industrial design and a locked ecosystem; Engadget's review praised the Pocket's build quality and kevtris-authored cores. The Multisystem 2 is the opposite philosophy: one box that becomes hundreds of systems, open-source, community-updated, uglier, and vastly more flexible. You are choosing between Apple and Linux, essentially.

Versus software emulation on a Pi

And then there is the cheap-and-cheerful floor: a Raspberry Pi running Batocera or RetroPie for a fraction of the price. Software emulation has closed a lot of the accuracy gap and will always win on cost and library breadth — it runs PS2 and GameCube the MiSTer can't. What it does not match is FPGA's deterministic, frame-and-latency-accurate reproduction of the original hardware, the exact thing this crowd pays for. If you cannot tell the difference on your setup, buy the Pi. If you can, the debate was never really open.

The Arcade Board and the Pocket Handheld

Multisystem2 Arcade (JAMMA)

Heber opened a third variant alongside the console: the Multisystem² Arcade, a JAMMA-edition board aimed at real cabinets. Priced around $350 with shipping slated for August–September 2026, it adds an integrated audio amplifier, a CTRLDock Arcade, dual-player JAMMA I/O, support for analog inputs (spinners, trackballs, wheels) and kick harnesses for up to nine buttons per player. It is the same no-DE10 thesis pointed at the coin-op world: drop it into a cab and the FPGA becomes the arcade PCB — legally, and without hunting down a dying original.

The Multisystem2 Pocket

The more interesting tease is a handheld. The Multisystem2 Pocket Project launched on 21 May 2026 as an open-innovation effort — Heber plus The Retro Collective, injection-moulded by Relay Industries, developed publicly "from the start, with your involvement." A July 2026 development update had the team choosing between three concept directions, with a feature list that reads like a wishlist: a 4-inch high-res display, dual analog sticks, twin shoulder buttons, dual stereo speakers, a curved ergonomic back, and removable "JOYSTIX" controls that slide off to swap layouts. RetroDodo's Brandon Saltalamacchia, covering the update, called it "still in deep development". Systems named so far are the handheld-friendly set — NES, Game Boy, Neo Geo, Mega Drive, PC Engine, SNES — not the Saturn-class heavyweights.

The Wide Boy that isn't the handheld

One clarification the coverage keeps getting wrong: the widescreen "Wide Boy" prototype that surfaced running Darius is not the Pocket. Time Extension was explicit that the Darius-playing widescreen unit is a display/core tech demo, not the planned handheld. The real Pocket is horizontal, 4:3, and modular. What Happens Next: A 6-12 Month Outlook

Availability and price

Prediction 1: the "off the shelf by spring 2026" goal has effectively already slipped. Heber's shop still gates the console — "in stock, low" with a maximum of two per customer — which is the behavior of a fulfilment queue, not a stocked shelf. Expect genuine buy-it-now availability no earlier than late 2026. Prediction 2: prices hold or creep. Both SKUs rose about £12 in year one; with DRAM pricing still ugly, £216/£264 is a floor, not a ceiling, and I would not bet on either dropping.

The arcade and the Pocket's real window

Prediction 3: the JAMMA Arcade ships roughly on time (August–September 2026) because it is closest to done and reuses the proven console board. Prediction 4: the Pocket does not hit its "hopefully by end of this year" target. A publicly designed, injection-moulded handheld still choosing between three concepts in July 2026 is a 2027 retail product — tooling alone eats months, and FPGA power draw makes the battery math genuinely hard. Treat any 2026 ship claim as aspiration.

Cores, clones, and the connector

Prediction 5: the open-source hardware plus that new 50-way connector invites derivatives — expect community add-on boards (extra RAM for Saturn and dual-RAM cores, storage, displays) and at least exploratory clone discussion within 12 months, exactly as the open original spawned imitators. The one thing that will not change is the software friction Hackaday flagged: the "jungle of controller mappings" and per-core display quirks are a MiSTer-wide problem, and no amount of nice casework fixes them. That remains the platform's ceiling.

The Verdict

Who should buy now

If you want hardware-accurate retro gaming, you already understand what FPGA buys you, and you were ever tempted to build a MiSTer from a DE10-Nano — stop, and buy the Multisystem 2 instead. It is cheaper than sourcing the parts, silent, thermally sane, 100% software-compatible, and it takes the assembly ritual off your plate. CRT owners want the £264 Analogue board; everyone on a modern panel wants the £216 Digital and should not pay for connectors they will never wire up.

Who should wait

If your library is PS2, GameCube or anything past the fifth generation, FPGA cores don't cover you yet and a software-emulation box serves you better today. If you specifically want the handheld, wait — the Pocket is real, but it is a 2027 product wearing a 2026 announcement. And if you cannot perceive the accuracy difference between a MiSTer and a well-tuned Pi on your own television, the honest answer is that the cheaper machine is the right machine. The Multisystem 2's achievement is not that it reinvented FPGA gaming; it's that it finally made the good version of it something you can buy in one click and plug into a TV. For this scene, that is the whole revolution.
