What the Pocket 6 actually is

What the table doesn't say out loud

Shawn Wilkins at Steam Deck HQ put the same event in industry context on the same day: "The increasingly difficult RAM shortage continues to impact hardware companies across the industry." This was not a Retroid problem. It was a Retroid symptom.

The 12GB tier that vanished and came back wrong

The 12GB story has a second act. In June 2026, the 12GB configuration returned — but not as it left. Note the Steam Deck line especially: a $549 device is now $789 for the 512GB OLED, with the $399 LCD discontinued in December 2025 and the 1TB OLED at $949. Performance: What Actually Runs

Enough about money. The reason you buy an 8 Gen 2 handheld is to run things the cheaper chips cannot, and the Pocket 6's performance profile is well-documented across multiple hands-on reviews. Here is where the numbers come from and what they mean.

GameCube and Wii: the 3x native sweet spot

The Pocket 6's headline emulation capability is GameCube at 3x native resolution — that is Saltalamacchia's figure from the RetroDodo review, and it holds across independent playtests. That resolution multiplier is not a party trick; it is the difference between GameCube games that look like a smeared memory and ones that look sharp on a 1080p panel. What actually killed the G2

The Pocket G2's tragedy is instructive. The Portal is the pick if you want a bigger screen and all-day battery and do not mind the extra mass. The Pocket 6 is the pick if pocketability and a sharper (higher-PPI) panel matter more than raw screen acreage. This is a preference, not a performance, decision — the rare comparison where you genuinely cannot go wrong.

Steam Deck OLED: the x86 elephant

The Steam Deck OLED is a category error to compare directly, which is exactly why buyers keep comparing it. It runs SteamOS on an x86 AMD APU, which means it does two things no Android handheld can: it plays your actual PC game library natively, and it runs desktop-class emulators — full Dolphin, PCSX2, RPCS3, Cemu — at accuracy levels the mobile forks cannot match. The Pocket 6 at 8GB is exactly right — 1.5x to 2x native across the library, 4.5-hour mixed sessions, and no need for the vanished 12GB tier because PS2 emulation is not RAM-bound. The couch streamer with a TV

You want to dock to a television and stream PC games or output emulation to a big screen. The Pocket 6's USB-C DisplayPort with 4K60 output is the differentiator over the Pocket 5 (4K30 without the dock) and the dead G2 (1080p60 only). Buy the Pocket 6 if the handheld is primary and the TV is occasional.
