The Pocket 6 is 67% faster and $25 dearer, and both of those numbers are true and mostly beside the point. Buy the newer chip if you are new to this or you play at the demanding edge; keep your money if your shelf tops out at PSP. Retro handheld preservation is a hobby about running old software well, not about winning a benchmark — a principle the historians over at the Digital Antiquarian have been documenting for years, one carefully-preserved platform at a time. Either Retroid honors that principle. Only one of them makes you pay extra for a ceiling you may never reach. As always with these demanding-tier claims — the Switch numbers, the "playable" PS2 asterisks, the exact fps a given Tears of the Kingdom build hits this month — verify against a current review before you spend, because emulation performance is a moving target and the driver you install tomorrow may rewrite today's verdict.

Is the Retroid Pocket 6 worth it over the Pocket 5?
Only if your library climbs past PSP and DS into PS2, GameCube, Wii, or Switch. The 8 Gen 2 is roughly 67% faster than the 865 in Geekbench 6 single-core (2,005 vs 1,199), but PS1, PSP, N64, and DS already run full speed on both. For the ~$25 gap between a $219 Pocket 5 and a $244 Pocket 6, you are buying headroom you may never spend.
How much faster is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 than the Snapdragon 865?
DROIX's bench run put the Pocket 6 about 67% ahead in Geekbench 6 single-core, ~58% in multi-core, 82.7% in AnTuTu, and a lopsided 189.2% in 3DMark Wild Life Extreme. That last number is the real story: the GPU jump (Adreno 740 vs 650) matters far more than the CPU jump for PS2 and GameCube.
Why did the Pocket 6 get more expensive after launch?
The 2026 DRAM shortage. The Gadgeteer reported the base 8GB/128GB model rose to $244 by June 2026, $15 above its $229 launch price. Retroid also discontinued the 12GB/256GB SKU in March 2026, then reintroduced a 12GB/128GB variant around June 2026 at $279 — more RAM, half the storage.
Can either handheld run Switch games like Tears of the Kingdom?
Barely, and with asterisks. One 2026 upgrade guide clocked Tears of the Kingdom at 20-25 fps on the Pocket 5 and 28-35 fps on the Pocket 6 — playable-ish, not smooth, and heavily driver-and-build dependent. Switch emulation is legally contested and finicky per-title on both. Do not buy either device as a Switch machine.
Which should I buy in 2026 — the 5 or the 6?
Buy the Pocket 6 if you want the newest silicon, a 120Hz AMOLED, Wi-Fi 7, active cooling, and native video-out, and you will actually push PS2/GameCube/Switch. Buy or keep the Pocket 5 if your ceiling is PSP, DS, and Dreamcast — you pocket the price difference for zero practical loss. Buy neither if you want a bigger 7-inch screen (Odin 2 Portal) or true pocketability (Retroid Pocket Mini V2).
