MiSTer Multisystem 2 in 2026: £216, Arcade Ships Now
For most of its life, MiSTer has been a religion with a barrier to entry. To join, you bought a Terasic DE10-Nano development board built for FPGA engineers, bolted on an SDRAM module, a USB hub, an I/O daughterboard and a fan, then flashed an SD card and prayed your controller mapping survived contact with reality. The MiSTer Multisystem 2 exists to delete that ritual. Heber Ltd, a 35-year-old arcade and industrial-electronics firm in Aylesbury, England, soldered the FPGA straight onto a custom board, put it in a case, and started selling it as a console you plug in and switch on.
As of August 2026 it is no longer a single product but a family. The £216 Digital and £264 Analogue consoles have been shipping since August 2025. A JAMMA Arcade edition is shipping this month. And a genuine handheld, the Multisystem2 Pocket, booted its first alpha in July. This is a news piece with hard numbers, real reviewer quotes and a forecast, so let us get into what actually shipped, what it costs, and whether the thing that costs less than its own FPGA chip is worth owning.
The News: A MiSTer You Just Plug In
What shipped, and when
The core product has been real and in customers' hands for a full year. Heber opened pre-orders on 6 May 2025 and began fulfilling them in the first days of August 2025, with the company's own preorder page citing shipping from 6 August and hands-on coverage quoting a 10 August target. In plain terms: this stopped being a render and became a console you could buy roughly twelve months ago. What makes it news again in August 2026 is that the line has forked into three shipping form factors and one that is nearly there.
One board, three form factors
There is a Digital console at £216 including VAT (£180 ex), an Analogue console at £264 including VAT (£220 ex), and a new Arcade (JAMMA) board at roughly £258 that Heber says is shipping through August into September 2026. A fourth device, the Multisystem2 Pocket handheld, is in open development and reached its first working alpha in July. Every one of them runs the same MiSTer cores. Heber is not building four consoles; it is building one FPGA platform and giving it four bodies.
No games included, and why that is the point
Heber ships every unit with no games "for copyright reasons." That is not a cost-cutting dodge, it is the entire editorial framing. This is an open platform, not a bundled nostalgia box with 8,000 pre-loaded ROMs of dubious provenance. You supply your own software on an SD card, or on the Analogue model, plug original cartridges straight in. It also means Heber never touches a ROM, which is exactly how a UK electronics firm with a 35-year reputation stays out of court.
No DE10 Sandwich: What It Is
The soldered Cyclone V
The headline engineering decision is that the field-programmable gate array is soldered directly onto a custom 10-layer PCB. The part is an Intel/Altera Cyclone V (5CSEBA6U23I7), a 28nm chip with roughly 110,000 logic elements and a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 hard processor system clocked at 800MHz. That ARM side runs the Linux front end; the FPGA fabric is where the actual consoles get rebuilt gate by gate. Because the chip is on the board, there is no DE10-Nano to buy, no RAM module to seat, no I/O board to align and no USB-hub spaghetti to route. Heber's own product page is blunt: it "does not require a separate DE10-Nano board."
The console costs less than its own chip
Here is the number that reframes the whole product. A bare DE10-Nano development board runs about $225. The loose Cyclone V 5CSEBA6U23I7 chip on its own is around £290 as a single unit at Mouser. The finished, cased, powered, warrantied £216 Digital console costs less than the raw silicon at its heart. That is not marketing spin; it is the arithmetic of buying industrial parts at hobbyist quantities versus Heber buying reels at production volume. When a complete consumer product undercuts one of its own components at retail, the DIY math stops making sense for anyone who values a Saturday.
A front end for the whole MiSTer ecosystem
Crucially, this is not a fork. The Multisystem 2 runs stock MiSTer cores, scripts and software unmodified, and Heber advertises it as backward compatible with the original MiSTer Stack and Multisystem 1. Whatever the community ships to GitHub tomorrow works here without a vendor blessing. Digital vs Analogue: the £48 question
Both consoles share the same brains: Cyclone V with a heatsink, 128MB of SDRAM (Alliance) for core memory, 1GB of LPDDR (ISSI) for the ARM/Linux side, a 10-layer PCB, an integrated 7-port powered USB 2.0 hub with internal and external ports, I2C expansion headers, and completely silent fanless operation. The Digital is HDMI-only (it also supports direct video DAC output). The Analogue, £48 dearer, is the version the CRT people want. The delta is not performance; every core runs identically. The delta is signal outputs.
The analogue outputs CRT owners actually want
The Analogue model adds a proper 24-bit DAC (18-bit on the dip variant), a 9-pin mini-DIN RGB output for SCART with C-Sync, a 15-way VGA connector, 3.5mm plus TOSLINK optical audio, and Ethernet. If you own a PVM, a consumer CRT with SCART, or an OSSC-adjacent chain, that is the £264 you spend without thinking. The Digital omits Ethernet, so wired networking there means a USB dongle. Both models carry Zaparoo NFC support for tap-to-launch tokens.
Expansion: SNAC, 50-way, Zaparoo, I2C
The Analogue also carries a SNAC (Serial Native Accessory Converter) slot under a sliding hatch, which lets original controllers and cartridge adapters talk to the cores with near-zero added latency across PlayStation, SNES, N64, PC Engine and Sega Saturn. A new 50-way connector breaks out the previously unused DE10-Nano pins for future add-ons. Power is a 5V barrel jack rated up to 4 amps, and it is not included, a recurring gotcha worth budgeting for.

History: MiST to MiSTer to Multisystem
MiST, then MiSTer
The lineage matters because it explains why this hardware exists at all. Around 2013, Till Harbaum released MiST, an FPGA board that recreated the Amiga and Atari ST in reconfigurable logic. In June 2017, Alexey "Sorgelig" Melnikov ported and vastly expanded that idea onto the far more powerful Terasic DE10-Nano, and called it MiSTer. Because the DE10-Nano was cheap, available and academic-friendly, the project exploded: hundreds of console, computer and arcade cores followed. The Verge's 2021 primer captured the moment MiSTer went from engineer's toy to enthusiast obsession.
The first Multisystem (2021)
Heber and Neil Thomas of RMC / The Retro Collective shipped the original MiSTer Multisystem in October 2021 as a carrier that consolised a DE10-Nano into a tidy case, roughly $300 board-only and $510 to $615 fully loaded. In July 2023 that board design was released as open-source hardware, with schematics, PCB files and Gerbers hosted publicly on GitHub. The Multisystem 2, first reported by Time Extension in December 2024 as a "true all-in-one MiSTer FPGA gaming console," removed the DE10-Nano from the equation entirely. Heber's stated goal was to keep pricing "as low as possible so many more people can get involved."
Why FPGA beats emulation for this crowd
Software emulation runs old games on a general-purpose CPU under an operating-system scheduler, which introduces variable latency and, occasionally, subtle timing inaccuracy. FPGA recreation rebuilds the original chips as digital logic that behaves cycle-for-cycle like the silicon it imitates, with deterministic, low input lag and no OS jitter. For the audience that measures button-to-photon latency and cares whether a raster effect lands on the correct scanline, that difference is the whole point, and it is why a £216 Cyclone V box has a waiting list while far more powerful emulation handhelds do not.

The JAMMA Arcade, Shipping Now
What the JAMMA board does
The freshest news is the Multisystem² Arcade, a version built to drop straight into a real arcade cabinet. It carries the same Cyclone V and RAM configuration as the consoles, but replaces the living-room I/O with a JAMMA (NeoGeo-style) 56-way hard-gold edge connector for direct cabinet wiring, plus a 24-bit analogue video output delivered over JAMMA and a dedicated VGA header. In other words, the same FPGA that runs your Mega Drive core at home can now run the arcade cores on the original CRT in the original cab, with the original controls.
CTRLDock, trackballs and Kick harnesses
Arcade I/O is the hard part of any cabinet build, and Heber has clearly leaned on 35 years of arcade electronics here. The board integrates a stereo class-D 10W audio amplifier with a physical volume control, a CTRLDock Arcade supporting up to 9 action buttons per player, trackball, spinner and analogue inputs for both players, dual trackball connectors, and CPS1/2 Kick harness connectors for player 1 and 2 expansion. This is not a hobby breakout board; it is an operator-grade interface. £258, shipping August into September
Heber lists the Arcade at roughly £258 (about $350) and says shipping is "planned to start in August and will continue into September 2026," fulfilled in priority order by order number. There is also a 5-pack bundle aimed squarely at operators running banks of cabinets. The same no-DE10 thesis applies: the FPGA and the entire circuit are on the mainboard, so a cabinet owner does not assemble anything, they wire the loom and power it. For a scene that has spent years bodging DE10-Nanos into JAMMA fingerboards, that is a meaningful simplification.
The Pocket: A Handheld MiSTer in Alpha
Open-development launch, May 2026
On 21 May 2026, Heber and The Retro Collective launched the Multisystem2 Pocket Project, an openly documented effort to build a fully MiSTer-compatible handheld with community involvement from the start. The stated design intent is a horizontal, 4:3-screen device that is injection moulded, with industrial design by Relay Industries and a heavy emphasis on modular, swappable controls. Heber's own framing is unusually candid: "We are doing this project in the open, from the start, with your involvement." The first technical goal was simply to "prove we can successfully drive an LCD screen directly from the MiSTer FPGA framework."
July 2026: the first alpha booted
The July 2026 development update is the real progress marker. Heber reports the first prototype, an ISSUE 1 alpha in a 3D-printed shell rather than the production design, was successfully tested. The telling detail: the developer took an SD card straight out of a Multisystem 2, changed the screen resolution in the MiSTer.ini, dropped it into the handheld, and it worked immediately. That is the payoff of a single shared platform. The planned system spread covers NES, Game Boy, Neo Geo, Mega Drive, PC Engine and SNES to start, with the team targeting a purchasable unit "hopefully by the end of 2026."
The Wide Boy is not the handheld
One clarification the coverage keeps having to make: the widescreen Darius-playing "Wide Boy" prototype that circulated in May 2026 is a display and core tech demo, not the Pocket. Lon Seidman: thermally balanced, $386 landed
Lon Seidman's March 2026 review is the most useful hardware assessment on record. On price he is precise: "I paid about $386 for mine (including shipping and tariffs)." On the fanless design he is reassuring: "My testing indicates the hardware is thermally balanced, maintaining stability even during intensive tasks." And on the product's reason to exist, he nails the thesis: "It bridges the gap between the technical flexibility of the original FPGA development boards and the convenience of a dedicated home console." Hackaday: out of the tinker cave
Hackaday's hands-on gets the cultural stakes right, calling it a "surprisingly noob-friendly FPGA console that finally gets the MiSTer experience out of the tinker cave and into the living room." On the integration: "The FPGA is integrated in the mainboard. No RAM modules, no USB hub spaghetti." On accessibility: "you don't need to be a soldering wizard." And on the legal posture, dry as ever: "just add some ROMs (legally, of course), and you're off," while confirming it is "100% compatible with the MiSTer software."
Metal Game Solid: the daily driver
LSDowdle at Metal Game Solid landed on it as a daily driver: "the Multisystem 2 will be my system of choice for some time to come," adding that the SNAC cartridge approach is "a much more elegant solution" and that "all of the cores I use work as expected." The one physical gripe is honest and small: it is "pretty light and I kinda wish it was taller and had some lead weights in it." The verdict, nonetheless, was "I highly recommend." Three independent reviewers, three variations on the same conclusion: the hard part is finally done for you.
Competition: Analogue, Emu Boxes, Bare MiSTer
vs Analogue's ASIC consoles
The obvious rival is Analogue. The Analogue Pocket (about $220, reviewed warmly by Engadget for its kevtris-authored FPGA cores) and the Analogue 3D are gorgeous, but they are closed, per-system-focused ASIC-style products with a curated core set. The Multisystem 2 is the opposite philosophy: one open board that runs the entire community core library. vs a DIY DE10-Nano MiSTer
The traditional route, a DE10-Nano plus SDRAM plus a USB hub plus an I/O board plus a case, still exists and still works. But once you add every part and your own labour, you are north of £380 for a rig that does exactly what the £216 Digital does out of the box, and you have inherited the assembly, the flashing and the troubleshooting. The Multisystem 2's entire value proposition is that it makes DIY MiSTer economically irrational unless you specifically enjoy the build.
vs software-emulation handhelds
Then there is the cheap, powerful crowd: Android and Linux emulation handhelds that run RetroArch cores on ARM SoCs. They are less expensive, and many handle systems FPGA MiSTer cannot yet touch cleanly, like PS2 or GameCube. What they cannot promise is cycle-accuracy and deterministic latency. The SD card and /media/fat
Whichever SKU you buy, the software experience is stock MiSTer, which means a full-size SD card (32GB or larger is sensible) formatted and populated with the standard layout. The card is the console's entire personality: cores, config, arcade definitions and your own ROMs all live under a single root. If you have never touched MiSTer, the folder tree looks like this:

You do not hand-download 200 cores. The community's update_all.sh script fetches and updates cores, arcade files, MRA definitions and filters in one pass. From the console's on-screen Scripts menu, or over SSH, it is a two-line ritual:

Where legal ROMs come from
Heber ships nothing playable, and every reviewer repeats the "legally, of course" caveat for a reason. Forecast: The Next 6-12 Months
The Pocket ships, or slips to 2027
Prediction one: the Pocket does not hit its "by end of 2026" wish. A first alpha in a 3D-printed shell booting in July is real progress, but injection tooling, modular control mechanisms and a production run are months of work each. Expect the design to lock late in 2026 and retail units to land in the first half of 2027. Heber's open-development honesty makes this easy to track and hard to spin.
Arcade fulfilment and true off-shelf stock
Prediction two: the Arcade clears its pre-order queue across August and September as promised, and a second batch plus more operator 5-packs follow into Q4 2026. Prediction three: the consoles finally reach genuine open, buy-it-now stock late in 2026. The current "In stock, low stock level, maximum 2 per customer" gating on the Digital tells you the Spring-2026 off-shelf goal slipped, and that the order book (past 17,000 orders in mid-2025, around 20,000 orders with over 10,000 fulfilled by early 2026) is still being worked down as a numbered queue.
Price pressure and the DRAM crunch
Prediction four: prices hold or nudge up, never down. Launch pre-orders were £170 and £210 ex-VAT; a year on the shelf prices are £180 and £220 ex-VAT, a roughly £12 creep. With SDRAM and LPDDR both caught in the same 2026 memory crunch squeezing every hardware BOM, do not expect the £216 figure to fall. Prediction five, the safe one: the core library keeps growing and the "no DE10 needed" line gets louder precisely because the DE10-Nano itself is drifting toward scarce and expensive.
The Machine's Verdict
Who buys which
Buy the £216 Digital if your display is a modern HDMI TV and you want the cheapest legitimate on-ramp to real MiSTer. Buy the £264 Analogue if you own a CRT, a PVM or a SCART chain, or if SNAC and original-controller latency is a line item in your happiness. Buy the ~£258 Arcade if you have a JAMMA cabinet and have suffered enough bodged DE10-Nano looms for one lifetime. Wait on the Pocket; it is genuinely coming, but it is an alpha, not a product.
The catches
Be honest about the friction. The power supply is not included. No games are included, by design. Stock is queued and gated, not instant. And the eternal MiSTer tax still applies: the "jungle of controller mappings" and the odd per-display quirk that every reviewer mentions and no consolisation can fully abolish. This is a hobbyist platform in a consumer shell, not an appliance.
Bottom line
The Multisystem 2 is the most sensible way into cycle-accurate FPGA retro gaming that currently exists, and it is the only one where the finished, cased, warrantied console costs less than the loose FPGA chip soldered inside it. For a scene that has spent a decade telling newcomers to buy a development board and learn to solder, that inversion is the actual news. Heber did not make MiSTer better. It made MiSTer buyable. In 2026 that is the more radical act.
