- You already own one. This is not an upgrade worth trading in a working Pocket 5 for unless you have hit its wall repeatedly and know it. "Faster" is not a reason to churn hardware; "my games do not run" is.
- You want the cheapest genuinely good AMOLED handheld and can find one on sale. At sub-$200, and with the G2 gone, the Pocket 5 is quietly the value pick of the whole Retroid range.

Buy neither if you were promised PS3 or Xbox 360 emulation, because you were lied to and no handheld at this price runs it. Buy neither if you want a 7-inch screen and a bigger battery — that is the Odin 2 Portal's job, same chip, larger everything, roughly the same money. And buy neither if what you actually want is cycle-accurate fidelity rather than fast-enough emulation, in which case your money belongs in an FPGA project and not an Android slab. Different tool, different religion.
The Verdict
Two machines, one panel, forty-five dollars, and two generations of silicon between them. After all the tables, the verdict is almost boring in its clarity: the Pocket 6 is the better handheld and the Pocket 5 is the better bargain, and which of those sentences applies to you depends entirely on where your library stops.
The Pocket 6 score
The Pocket 6 does the one thing that mattered — it moved the emulation ceiling up a full console era for about forty-five dollars — and it did nothing else. That is both its triumph and its frustration, and the reviewers felt the tension. Saltalamacchia scored it 8.4 and wrote that the only disappointment comes from knowing that Retroid can do better here, that a $250 device should have something unique, and that ultimately Retroid have played it too safe. He is right, and it does not change the recommendation, because "safe" here means "the same excellent handheld with a much better chip." That is a good deal even when it is a boring one. The reason it is faster and pricier, in that order, is that Retroid spent the entire budget on the part that counts.

The Pocket 5 score
The Pocket 5 is not worse; it is just aimed one shelf lower and priced accordingly. For the enormous population of players whose emulation ambitions top out at the PSP and Dreamcast era, it is every bit as good as the 6 and forty-five dollars cheaper, with the exact same beautiful screen. Its only real flaw is the one Phil Retro named — it lives in a brutal neighbourhood, outpaced by its own shadow, cannibalised from above and below by Retroid's own catalogue. Judged on its merits rather than its family, it holds up superbly.
