MiSTer Multisystem 2 in 2026: £216 for a £290 Chip
For most of the last decade, owning a MiSTer meant owning a small pile of parts that never entirely agreed to become a console. You bought a Terasic DE10-Nano development board built for engineering undergraduates, bolted on a 128MB SDRAM module, added a USB hub board, sometimes an analogue I/O board, printed a case that half-fit, and then explained to everyone in the house why the machine running Street Fighter II looked like it belonged on a lab bench. The MiSTer Multisystem 2, from Aylesbury-based Heber Ltd, exists to make that entire sentence unnecessary.
As of August 2026 it is a shipping product with one deeply boring, deeply welcome property: you plug it in and it works. No board stack, no soldering iron, no bill of materials. This is a report on where the product actually stands — current prices, stock reality, the arcade edition that just began shipping, the handheld that has not — and on the single line-item that makes the whole exercise faintly ridiculous: the finished console costs less than the bare chip inside it.
The News: What Changed in 2026
From forum project to consumer review cycle
The Multisystem 2 was announced in December 2024, opened for pre-order on 6 May 2025, and began shipping its first production run in early August 2025. That much is history. What changed in 2026 is the company it keeps. In March 2026, Lon Seidman reviewed it as, in his words, a consolized retro FPGA device — phrasing that only appears once a product has left the tinker-forum orbit and entered the general consumer-review cycle. Moegamer had already, in September 2025, described it plainly as an all-in-one console built around the open-source MiSTer standard. The narrative shifted from look what you can build to here is a box you can buy.
Three SKUs, one board
Heber now sells three variants off the same custom mainboard. The Digital console is £216 including VAT (£180 ex-VAT). The Analogue console is £264 inc-VAT (£220 ex-VAT). And the newest arrival, the Multisystem² Arcade — a JAMMA edition aimed at real cabinets — is £258 inc-VAT (£215 ex-VAT, roughly $350) and began shipping on an order-number basis across August and September 2026. All three share the same silicon; they differ only in what they let out of the box and what they let plug into it.
Stock is real, but rationed
The important caveat for anyone reading this as a buying guide: as of today the Digital unit is listed as In stock — low stock level with a hard limit of two per customer, and the Analogue is in stock, ready to ship. Heber's stated ambition was to have the console sitting un-queued on a shelf by spring 2026. That goal has quietly slipped. The order book has behaved less like a store and more like a numbered fulfilment queue since launch — the platform passed roughly 17,000 orders in mid-2025 (orders, not units shipped; shipping only began that August) and by February 2026 sat near 20,000 orders with more than 10,000 fulfilled. Demand, in other words, has never been the problem.
MiSTer, FPGA & the DE10 Problem
What an FPGA actually does
Software emulation runs old hardware as a program: a modern CPU pretends, in code, to be a Super Nintendo. It works, but it introduces a translation layer and, with it, latency and edge-case inaccuracy. A field-programmable gate array takes a different route. It is a chip full of reconfigurable logic that can be wired, at the gate level, to become the original console's circuitry. MiSTer cores are hardware descriptions, not programs — the FPGA is not imitating a 65C816, it is arranged to behave as one. The result is cycle-accurate behaviour and input latency close to the real machine. That is the entire appeal, and it is why enthusiasts tolerate the cost.
From MiST to MiSTer
The lineage matters. The project began as MiST, built by Till Harbaum around 2013 with an Atari ST and Amiga focus. In June 2017, Alexey Sorgelig Melnikov ported and expanded the idea into MiSTer on GitHub, standardising on Terasic's DE10-Nano — an off-the-shelf board carrying an Intel/Altera Cyclone V. It was an idea The Verge's 2021 primer described as recreating vintage machines in reconfigurable silicon. Standardising on a mass-produced dev board was pragmatic: it gave the community one target. It also permanently welded the MiSTer experience to a piece of engineering hardware never designed to sit under a television.
The sandwich problem
The result became known, affectionately, as the MiSTer sandwich: a DE10-Nano on the bottom, an SDRAM module on top, a USB hub board, an analogue I/O board for RGB output, spacers, and a case to hide the lot. It worked brilliantly and looked like homework. Heber's entire thesis with the Multisystem line is that the sandwich was always a packaging accident, not a design requirement — and that a purpose-built board could deliver the same cores with none of the stack. That is not a small claim; it is the difference between a hobby and a product.
Inside the Box: Cyclone V & 10 Layers
The soldered heart
The defining decision is that the Cyclone V FPGA is soldered directly onto Heber's custom system board — no DE10-Nano underneath. RetroRGB noted the Cyclone chip is mounted to the console's own PCB rather than requiring users to source a separate development board. Hackaday was blunter: The FPGA is integrated in the mainboard. No RAM modules, no USB hub spaghetti. The specific part is an Intel Cyclone V (5CSEBA6U23I7), a 28nm device with roughly 110,000 logic elements and a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 running at 800MHz for the Linux/HPS side. Same class of silicon as the DE10-Nano; different, deliberate packaging.
Memory, ports and power
Both console SKUs carry 128MB of SDRAM (Alliance) for core memory and 1GB of LPDDR (ISSI) for the ARM side, on a 10-layer PCB — a genuinely serious board for a hobbyist product. There is an integrated, powered 7-port USB 2.0 hub: Lon Seidman counted four front-facing USB ports, dual rear USB ports, plus an internal header. Power is a 5V barrel connector rated, per the same review, up to 4 amps. Cooling is a heatsink and nothing else — silent operation, no fan cooling required, per Heber's listing — and Seidman reported the hardware ran thermally balanced, maintaining stability even during intensive tasks.
What you still have to supply
It is not literally plug-and-play out of a sealed box: you bring your own full-size SD card (32GB or larger), a 5V supply and an HDMI cable, then load the MiSTer distribution and your legally-owned ROMs. The workflow is unchanged from any other MiSTer — which is the point. Because the Multisystem 2 is, in Hackaday's words, 100% compatible with the MiSTer software, but allows some additional future features, none of this is Heber-specific lock-in. Digital vs Analogue: Which SKU
The Digital: HDMI and done
The £216 Digital is the sensible default for anyone playing on a modern TV or monitor. It outputs HDMI (and supports direct video DAC output), carries the full 7-port hub, the SD slot, I2C headers for an optional OLED and Zaparoo NFC support. What it omits is the analogue plumbing: no SCART, no VGA, no SNAC controller port, and — depending on configuration — no onboard Ethernet, which pushes you toward a USB Wi-Fi dongle Heber does not include. For most buyers on a flat panel, none of those omissions will ever be felt.
The Analogue: for the CRT crowd
The £264 Analogue exists for people who own a Sony PVM or a scan-line-faithful CRT and consider HDMI a compromise. On top of everything the Digital does, it adds a 9-pin mini-DIN RGB/SCART output with composite sync, a 15-way VGA connector, a 24-bit video DAC (18-bit in practice), TOSLINK optical audio, onboard Ethernet and — the enthusiast's favourite — a SNAC slot. SNAC (Serial Native Accessory Converter) lets you plug in original controllers for the PlayStation, SNES, N64, PC Engine and Sega Saturn, wired through to the core with authentic latency. It is the difference between playing a facsimile and playing the machine.
And the Arcade, for cabinets
The Multisystem² Arcade is the £258 outlier: a JAMMA edition built to drop into a real cabinet. It adds an onboard Class-D 10W amplifier with physical volume, 24-bit analogue video with composite sync, dual-player JAMMA I/O, support for analogue inputs like spinners, trackballs and wheels, and up to nine buttons per player via kick harnesses, all in a 3D-printed enclosure with quick-fit slide rails. It ships CE- and UKCA-marked, and there is a five-pack bundle for operators who apparently intend to convert a whole arcade. Pricing: £216, £264 & a £290 Chip
The number that breaks the spreadsheet
Here is the fact this entire article is built around. A single Intel Cyclone V 5CSEBA6U23I7 — just the chip, no board, no RAM, no case — runs about £290.46 as a single unit at Mouser. The finished Digital console, with that same chip already soldered down, plus 1.1GB of combined RAM, a 10-layer board, a powered USB hub, an enclosure and a warranty, is £216. Heber is, on paper, selling you a working console for roughly 74% of the cost of the bare part at its heart. Prices creep, they don't fall
Anyone waiting for a price cut should stop. At the May 2025 pre-order, the Digital was £170 ex-VAT and the Analogue £210 ex-VAT — the figures you will still see quoted in older coverage and in stale search snippets. Today those are £180 and £220 ex-VAT respectively; each has crept up by around £10-12 in a single year. With the 2025–2026 memory-market crunch pressuring exactly the SDRAM and LPDDR parts on this board, the realistic forecast is flat to slightly up, not down. If you have been holding out for £199, you are holding out for a number that is moving the wrong way.
What it costs in the US
For readers outside the UK, the honest number is higher than the sticker. Seidman, importing to the United States, reported: I paid about $386 for mine (including shipping and tariffs). That is the Digital-class unit landed — a useful reality check against the £216 headline, and a reminder that FPGA retro hardware is a small-batch, cross-border business with all the frictions that implies. Nobody in this category enjoys economies of scale; you are paying, in part, for the privilege of a product that will never be mass-market.
History: From MiST to the Living Room
Heber's day job
Heber Ltd is not a Kickstarter that appeared last year. The Aylesbury firm has spent around 35 years in arcade and industrial electronics — the kind of company that makes control boards for gaming machines you have used without noticing. That industrial background is why a 10-layer PCB and CE/UKCA marks turn up on what is nominally a hobbyist toy. The retro credibility comes from the other side of the collaboration: Neil Thomas of RMC / The Retro Collective, whose YouTube audience is precisely the target market and whose involvement dates back to the original Multisystem.
The original Multisystem, and going open
The first Multisystem shipped in October 2021 as a Heber-and-RMC collaboration. It still needed a DE10-Nano, but it tidied everything around it into one board, selling from roughly $300 (bring your own DE10) to $510-615 fully loaded. Crucially, in July 2023 that board design was released as full open-source hardware — schematics, PCB files and Gerbers in a public repository. The Multisystem 2 is therefore not a walled garden bolted onto a community project; it is an iteration on already-open hardware, which is a meaningfully different ethical posture from most consolized retro products that quietly close the doors behind them.
The 2024–2025 turn
Announced in December 2024, the Multisystem 2's stated design goal was, in Heber's framing, to make the price as low as possible so that many more people could get involved in FPGA gaming and MiSTer. Whether £216 clears that bar is a matter of perspective — it is cheap for cycle-accurate FPGA hardware and expensive next to a Raspberry Pi — but the intent, plus the backwards compatibility with existing Multisystem cartridges and the wider MiSTer accessory stack, tells you the platform is being managed for longevity rather than a single sales quarter.

What the Reviewers Found
Hackaday: out of the tinker cave
Hackaday's May 2025 coverage framed the product as a genuine accessibility shift, calling it a machine that gets the MiSTer experience out of the tinker cave and into the living room and noting that you don't need to be a soldering wizard to use the thing. Its technical read on the analogue edition — a 10-layer PCB with HDMI, native RGB out, Mean Well PSU support, internal USB headers and space for an OLED or NFC reader — is the detail-level endorsement that matters to this audience. Its buying advice was characteristically dry: Just add some ROMs (legally, of course), and you're off.
Lon.TV: the consumer verdict
Seidman's March 2026 review is the clearest signal the product crossed over. He described it as bridging the gap between the technical flexibility of the original FPGA development boards and the convenience of a dedicated home console — which is, precisely, the pitch, confirmed by someone who paid $386 of his own money for it and credited it to RMC's Neil and electronics manufacturer Heber Limited. His thermal and build observations (stable under load, cleanly laid-out ports, a sane 5V supply) are the boring-but-important notes that separate a shipping product from a prototype.
Metal Game Solid: the enthusiast's caveats
For the hands-on enthusiast view, LSDowdle at Metal Game Solid concluded that the Multisystem 2 will be my system of choice for some time to come, singling out the SNAC implementation as a much more elegant solution than the alternatives. The criticism was physical, not functional: the unit is pretty light and I kinda wish it was taller and had some lead weights in it. When the loudest complaint about an FPGA console is that it should be heavier, the electronics are evidently fine.
The Competition, Priced Out
Against a self-built MiSTer
The obvious rival is the thing the Multisystem 2 replaces: a home-built MiSTer. A bare DE10-Nano is around $225 (about $190 on academic pricing), before you add SDRAM, a USB hub, an analogue board and a case — realistically pushing a comparable analogue build past the Multisystem 2's price once you count the parts and the hours. The Heber unit's pitch is not that it is cheaper than every possible DIY route; it is that it is cheaper than a good one and arrives assembled, tested and CE-marked. Your Saturday afternoon has a value, even if the spreadsheet forgets to include it.
Against Analogue's hardware
The other FPGA name is Analogue, whose Pocket (around $219–220, reviewed warmly by Engadget) and 3D console take a different philosophy: closed, polished, cartridge-first, and built around Analogue's own cores rather than the open MiSTer ecosystem. If you want a beautifully finished object that plays real Game Boy cartridges, Analogue wins. If you want one box that can become hundreds of systems via community cores, MiSTer wins. Against a Raspberry Pi
And then there is software emulation, cheaper than all of it. A Raspberry Pi running RetroPie or Batocera will emulate most 8- and 16-bit libraries for a fraction of £216 — see our notes on the frozen state of RetroPie in 2026. What it will not give you is cycle-accurate timing or FPGA-class latency. The Multisystem 2 is not competing on price with a Pi; it is competing on fidelity, and that is a choice the buyer has to make honestly rather than a fight either device can win outright.

JAMMA, shipping now
The Multisystem² Arcade is the most concrete piece of 2026 news: a £258 JAMMA board with an onboard 10W amplifier, dual-player I/O, spinner/trackball/wheel support and up to nine buttons per player, shipping on an order-number basis through August and September 2026. It turns MiSTer's deep arcade-core library into something you can wire straight into a cabinet without an adapter harness — the natural endpoint for a platform whose _Arcade folder already holds thousands of .mra definitions. For a certain kind of operator, this is the first time FPGA accuracy and JAMMA convenience have arrived in the same box.
The Pocket that isn't here yet
The handheld is the most-asked-about and least-finished item. The Multisystem2 Pocket Project was announced on 21 May 2026 as an open-innovation effort between Heber and The Retro Collective, with industrial design by Relay Industries. The declared direction: a horizontal, 4:3-screen handheld with modular, swappable controls (removable JOYSTIX that slide off), an injection-moulded shell, dual stereo speakers, dual analogue sticks and twin shoulder buttons, targeting cores like NES, Game Boy, Neo Geo, Mega Drive, PC Engine and SNES. Heber's own aspiration is hopefully by end of this year. Read that as 2027.
Don't confuse it with the Wide Boy
A widescreen Wide Boy prototype that made the rounds playing a stretched Darius is not the handheld — it is a display tech demo proving the FPGA can drive an LCD directly, and Time Extension said as much explicitly. Predictions: Next 6–12 Months
What will happen
Concrete, falsifiable and dated. First: the JAMMA Arcade edition clears its August–September 2026 shipping window, and Heber uses the CTRLDock Arcade ecosystem — amp, harnesses, five-packs — as the wedge into operator and bartop sales. Second: stock gating persists. The max two per customer, low stock status is not a launch quirk; expect the queue-not-shelf model to survive into at least the first half of 2027, the spring-2026 off the shelf goal having already slipped once.
What won't happen
Third: the Pocket does not ship in 2026. An injection-moulded, modular handheld with three competing concept directions still in community voting as of mid-2026 does not reach retail in months; 2027 is the honest window. Fourth: no price cut. Between the year-one creep already on record and the ongoing DRAM shortage taxing the exact memory parts this board uses, £216/£264 holds or nudges upward. If anything moves, it moves the wrong way for buyers, and the people telling you to wait are wrong.
The quiet one
Fifth, and least flashy: the 50-way expansion connector — fifty otherwise-unused signals broken out on the board — starts attracting first third-party add-ons, in the same way the SNAC slot and the open-hardware licence turned the original Multisystem into a small ecosystem. Open hardware plus an exposed bus tends, eventually, to grow accessories. Watch the forums, not the storefront, for the first ones.
The Verdict
Who should buy it
If you have wanted a MiSTer but recoiled at assembling a board sandwich, the Multisystem 2 is the machine that removes the excuse — £216 for the HDMI Digital, £264 for the CRT-friendly Analogue, both cycle-accurate, both running the same open cores as any bare board. If you own a PVM and original controllers, pay the extra £48 for the Analogue and its SNAC slot; you will use them, and you will notice the difference.
Who shouldn't
If your library stops at 8- and 16-bit and you cannot feel input latency, a Raspberry Pi does the job for a third of the money and you should buy that instead without shame. FPGA fidelity is real, but it is a connoisseur's expense, not a universal upgrade. The Multisystem 2's achievement is not that it makes that expense cheap — it is that it finally makes it a single, boring, plug-in purchase. Selling that purchase for less than the chip inside it is either a triumph of volume economics or a very good joke. Either way, it ships.
