Both devices are built around the same piece of silicon — a SigmaStar SSD202D — and no amount of firmware, marketing copy, or wishful benchmarking changes what a chip can and cannot decode. If you were hoping this comparison would end with one device pulling ahead on frame rates, you can stop here and buy whichever is cheaper. They perform identically, because they are, functionally, the same computer wearing two different jackets.

What actually separates them is ergonomics and economics. One has a 2.8-inch screen and a smaller battery. The other has a 3.5-inch screen, a bigger battery, and a Wi-Fi radio. And in a twist that would be funny if it were not also mildly infuriating, the smaller, older-looking Mini frequently costs more in 2026 than the larger, newer Plus. This piece takes both apart — spec by spec, dollar by dollar, ROM by ROM — and tells you which to buy, and why the question is more interesting than the hardware that answers it.

Same Silicon, Two Shells

The provenance is not a rumor: the part was documented by CNX Software back in December 2021 when the original Mini launched at roughly $50, and it has not changed since. The screen: 2.8 vs 3.5 inches

The headline difference is the panel diagonal. The Mini uses a 2.8-inch IPS screen; the Plus stretches the same 640×480 grid across 3.5 inches. That is a 25% larger diagonal and roughly a 56% larger viewable area. For anyone whose eyes are older than the SNES library they are playing, that matters. The catch — and there is always a catch — is that spreading the same pixel count over more glass lowers the density, which we will get to in a moment.

The battery and the radio

The Plus carries a 3000 mAh cell against the original Mini’s 1900 mAh (V1) or 2000 mAh (V2). That is a 50% larger battery in a body only about 11 grams heavier. It is the most defensible reason to prefer the Plus on paper. The second is the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi radio, which the Mini simply does not have. Wi-Fi on a device this small is not about streaming; it is about box-art scraping, clock synchronization, RetroAchievements, and OnionOS netplay. Neither device has Bluetooth, and neither has HDMI out — a limitation DROIX flagged directly, noting that “one thing lacking on the Miyoo is a HDMI port.” If you want to put these games on a television, look elsewhere. The Screen Paradox: Bigger Isn't Sharper

What Gizmodo actually saw

This is not a theoretical complaint. When Gizmodo reviewed the Mini Plus under the headline “A Reminder That Bigger Isn’t Always Better,” the reviewer wrote that titles like “Yoshi’s Island for the SNES still look muddy, undersaturated, and just plain ugly” on the Plus panel. The complaint tracks exactly with the PPI drop: the same art, rendered at the same resolution, is being magnified across more physical distance between pixels. It is worth being precise here, because that review was comparing the Plus panel unfavorably to a rival’s screen, not declaring the Plus unusable — but the underlying observation is real and it is physics.

Who should actually care

In practice, most buyers do not care and should not. Held at a normal handheld distance, 229 PPI is perfectly sharp for 8-bit and 16-bit art, and the extra size makes long sessions less of a squint. The people who genuinely lose something with the Plus are the pixel purists and the small-form-factor obsessives — the same crowd who bought the original Mini precisely because it was the smallest good-looking thing you could put in a coin pocket. If that is you, the density downgrade is a real trade, not a rounding error. For everyone else, the bigger screen is a comfort win and the sharpness loss is invisible.

Performance and Emulation Ceilings

Since the silicon is identical, this section describes both devices at once. There is no per-device benchmark divergence to report, and any source claiming otherwise is measuring firmware overhead, not hardware. What follows is the consensus performance envelope drawn from multiple independent reviewers.

What runs full speed

The comfort zone is enormous and it is where you should spend your time. Playhouse’s 2026 review lists it cleanly: “Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, NES, SNES, Mega Drive, Master System, Neo Geo, arcade (via FBNeo/MAME2003) and PlayStation 1 all run at full speed.” That is the whole 2D canon plus PS1, which is more games than any human will finish in a lifetime. Handheld Picker frames the boundary just as directly, calling the Mini Plus “excellent for low-power retro systems and increasingly shaky once you leave that lane.”

The PS1 line

PlayStation 1 is the ceiling and it is a high one. Playhouse pegs it at roughly 90–95% of the library running full speed, with the vast majority needing no per-game tuning at all. Bound by Flame’s 2026 review is slightly more measured, noting PS1 gets “Good performance on most games, some demanding titles may show minor slowdowns.” The reliable list is exactly what you would want it to be: Final Fantasy VII through IX, the Crash and Spyro trilogies, Metal Gear Solid, Symphony of the Night, Tekken 3, Gran Turismo 1 and 2, Resident Evil 1 and 2, Tony Hawk 1 and 2, Wipeout, Ridge Racer, and effectively every 2D fighter. The Plus’s 3000 mAh cell delivers, per Playhouse, “6 to 8 hours of mixed use with the screen at 50% brightness,” with the same review noting that “heavier emulation like PS1 drops it closer to 5 hours.” Bound by Flame, measuring continuous rather than mixed use, lands lower: “The 3000mAh battery delivers 4-6 hours of continuous gaming, depending on the system being emulated and screen brightness settings.” Both are consistent once you account for methodology — light 8-bit and GBA sessions push toward 8 hours, PS1 pulls it toward 5. The original Mini, with its 1900–2000 mAh cell driving a smaller screen, lands in the same rough ballpark per hour but with a third less capacity, so it simply runs out sooner. Call it a real, roughly-50% endurance advantage for the Plus.

Standby, sleep, and the charge cycle

Both devices sleep well — the SSD202D idles at near-nothing, so a suspended game survives days in your bag. Both charge over USB-C, and both take a couple of hours from empty. The Plus’s larger cell means a marginally longer charge, which is the correct trade for a marginally longer play session. Neither supports fast charging in any meaningful sense, and neither should; a device this cheap does not need a 30W brick to top off a 3000 mAh battery overnight.

The verdict on endurance

If battery life is your deciding factor, the Plus wins and it is not especially close. Fifty percent more capacity for eleven extra grams is the kind of trade that makes the original Mini look like a preview and the Plus look like the finished product. This is one of the few places where “the Plus is just better” is unambiguously correct rather than a matter of taste.

OnionOS: The Real Upgrade

Neither of these devices is worth owning on its stock firmware, and every reviewer who likes them says so. The thing that transforms the Miyoo line from “cheap toy” to “genuinely beloved” is a community operating system called OnionOS, and it runs on both the Mini and the Mini Plus.

What OnionOS adds

OnionUI describes its project, verbatim, as “an enhanced operating system for your Miyoo Mini and Mini+, featuring fine-tuned emulation with 100+ built-in emulators, auto-save and resume, a wealth of customization options, and much more.” That understates it. OnionOS ships its own build of RetroArch with a custom display driver tuned for these panels, per-system box-art, themeing, RetroAchievements, and the auto-save-and-resume behavior that makes a pick-up-and-play handheld actually pick-up-and-play. Retro Handheld HQ, which rates the Plus 8.5, calls OnionOS “the single biggest reason this handheld stays relevant in 2026,” and describes the device as “the most polished sub-$70 emulation handheld you can buy.” If you want a different flavor entirely, the SD-card nature of these devices means you can also flash something like Batocera onto comparable hardware and never look back — but on the Miyoo line specifically, OnionOS is the default answer.

Wi-Fi only matters on the Plus

Several OnionOS features are gated behind Wi-Fi, which means they only work on the Mini Plus. Box-art scraping, network time sync, RetroAchievements check-ins, and OnionOS’s netplay all need the radio the original Mini does not have. This is the sharpest functional difference between the two devices after battery: the Plus is a connected handheld and the Mini is an island. If you care about achievements or scraping thousands of covers automatically instead of loading a pre-built art pack by hand, that alone decides it.

Save states, netplay, and shaders

Pocket Retro Gamer reported on 23 August 2026 that LitNXT had it in stock at $65.99 console-only. Gamepad Squire, in August 2026, logged official pricing at $56.99, AliExpress listings around $45–55, and Amazon bundles with a case and pre-loaded card at $75–85. The original Mini’s collector tax

Look at the last two rows. The current small-form Mini — the V4 — sells on Miyoo’s own store for a $99 sale price, which is roughly $42 more than the Plus’s $56.99 sale. Go looking for a classic V1–V3 instead and it is worse: Gizmodo noted paying up to “$200 for an out-of-production Miyoo Mini,” because the older units are discontinued and the collector market has bid them up. The cause is not nostalgia alone; it is that the 2.8-inch panel was, in Gizmodo’s words, “incredibly hard for the company to reliably source.” The whole reason the Plus exists is that Miyoo could not keep 2.8-inch screens in supply — they “couldn’t keep them in stock for more than a couple of minutes” — so they moved to a more available 3.5-inch panel. The smaller screen is rarer, and rarer is pricier. Same chip, more money, less battery. That is the paradox in one sentence.

The bundle trap

One warning on pricing, because it recurs constantly. The eye-catching listings — “25,000 games!”, “128 GB loaded!”, the $25 Amazon units — are reseller ROM bundles, not anything Miyoo ships. The commuter and the collector

1. The daily commuter. You want to play GBA and SNES on a train for an hour each way. Buy the Plus. The bigger battery clears a round-trip with margin, the larger screen is easier on tired eyes, and the sub-$60 price makes it a device you will not cry over if it gets crushed in a bag. This is the single most common buyer and the Plus is the answer.

2. The small-form-factor collector. You already own a shelf of handhelds and you specifically want the tiniest good-looking one — the 286-PPI jewel that fits a coin pocket. Buy the original Mini, and accept that you will pay a premium for a discontinued panel. You are buying an object, not a spec sheet, and that is a legitimate reason. Just know you are paying the collector tax with open eyes.

The gift-giver and the achievement hunter

3. The gift-giver. You are buying this for a partner or a kid who has never used RetroArch. Buy the Plus, pre-load OnionOS, and hand it over configured. The larger screen photographs better under a tree, the battery survives a long first day, and the lower price leaves room for a case. 4. The achievement hunter. You care about RetroAchievements, netplay, and auto-scraped box art. Buy the Plus, full stop. Every one of those features needs the Wi-Fi radio the original Mini does not have. The Mini physically cannot serve this buyer.

The purist on a budget

5. The pixel purist who is also broke. You want maximum sharpness per dollar and you do not care about Wi-Fi or size. This is the only genuinely hard call. The original Mini’s 286 PPI is objectively denser, but in 2026 you will pay $99 for a V4 or gamble on the used market to get it, versus $56.99 for a Plus that is bigger and lasts longer. Unless the density is a religious conviction, the Plus wins even here on pure value. Buy the Plus and sit slightly closer to the screen.

Plenty of people already own an original Mini and are considering the jump. The good news: because the platform is identical, migration is almost entirely a matter of moving files, and your saves come with you.

Moving your saves and states

Both devices store saves and states in the same OnionOS directory structure, so the process is copy-paste, not conversion. Pull the card from the Mini, back up the two folders that matter, flash a fresh OnionOS to the Plus’s card, and drop your saves back into the identical paths. Because the emulator cores are the same, a save state made on the Mini loads on the Plus without so much as a hiccup.

Re-flashing OnionOS

Do not simply clone the Mini’s card byte-for-byte onto the Plus. Flash a clean current OnionOS build sized for the Plus, then layer your ROMs and saves back on top. This avoids carrying over any Mini-specific config quirks and ensures the display driver and firmware floor match the Plus. If you are coming from stock firmware rather than OnionOS, install OnionOS on the Plus first and treat the migration as a fresh setup that happens to inherit your save files.

The firmware-floor gotcha

One detail trips people up. The Mini and the Plus have different minimum firmware versions, and OnionOS expects the correct floor for each. The original Mini line wants an early-2022-or-later firmware base; the Plus wants a mid-2023-or-later base; the newer V4 wants a late-2023 base to drive its panel correctly. You do not normally touch this — a retail unit ships above the floor — but if you buy a very old stock unit or a sketchy clone, verify the firmware date before you install OnionOS, or the boot will hang. The legal footnote

Since this is a device whose entire value proposition is emulation, one point of law is worth stating, because The Machine does read the case reporters. The emulator itself is legal: in Sony Computer Entertainment v. Connectix, 203 F.3d 596 (9th Cir. 2000), the court held that reverse-engineering a console’s BIOS to build an emulator is fair use. What is not legal is distributing the copyrighted BIOS and ROMs — which is exactly what those “25,000 games included” bundles do. The hardware is clean; the pre-loaded card is not. Buy the bare device, then fill it with dumps of games you own. The device does nothing wrong. The reseller who crams it with someone else’s copyrighted library is another matter entirely.

For almost everyone: the Plus

Buy the Miyoo Mini Plus. It is cheaper (as low as $56.99 on sale and $45–55 on AliExpress), it has 50% more battery, it has the Wi-Fi radio that unlocks OnionOS’s best features, and it plays every single thing the original Mini plays because it is the same computer. The only thing you give up is screen density most people will never notice at arm’s length. For the collector: the original

Buy the original 2.8-inch Mini only if you specifically want the smallest, densest, most jewel-like version and you are willing to pay a discontinued-panel premium — $99 for a V4 or a used-market gamble for a V1–V3. That is a taste purchase, not a value purchase, and there is nothing wrong with taste. Just do not tell yourself the smaller one performs better. It does not. It performs identically and costs more.

For the impatient: neither

And if reading this far has made you realize you actually want N64, Dreamcast, PS2, or PSP — the systems both of these devices cannot touch — then the answer is neither Miyoo. Step up a tier to a Snapdragon-class handheld and pay the difference. Within the 2D-and-PS1 universe, though, the Mini Plus is the correct buy for four out of five people, and the fifth already knows exactly why they are paying more for less. Same chip. $42 more for the smaller one. Buy the Plus.

Do the Miyoo Mini and Mini Plus use the same processor?
Yes. Both run the SigmaStar SSD202D: two Cortex-A7 cores at 1.2 GHz, 128 MB DDR3, and a 2D-only GPU, documented by CNX Software in December 2021. Because the silicon is identical, both share the same PlayStation 1 emulation ceiling and there is no performance difference between them.
Is the Miyoo Mini Plus better than the original Mini?
For most buyers, yes. The Plus has a bigger 3.5-inch screen, a 50% larger 3000 mAh battery (6-8 hours mixed use per Playhouse), and adds 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi for OnionOS scraping, netplay and RetroAchievements. Raw performance is identical, and in 2026 the Plus is usually the cheaper of the two.
How much is the Miyoo Mini Plus in 2026?
Official-store pricing runs $79.99 regular and $56.99 on sale for 64 GB, with a 'From $53.99' sale seen in January 2026. Pocket Retro Gamer logged LitNXT at $65.99 console-only on 23 August 2026, and Gamepad Squire recorded AliExpress listings around $45-55 the same month.
Can the Miyoo Mini Plus run N64 or PSP?
Not really. PS1 is the ceiling, running roughly 90-95% of the library at full speed per Playhouse. N64 is limited to about five titles with tweaks (Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, GoldenEye, Star Fox 64, F-Zero X), while Dreamcast is a stretch and PSP and DS are effectively unsupported on the 2D-only, 128 MB hardware.
Why does the original Miyoo Mini cost more than the Plus?
The 2.8-inch panel was, per Gizmodo, 'incredibly hard for the company to reliably source,' which pushed Miyoo to the more available 3.5-inch panel on the Plus. The classic V1-V3 units are discontinued and sell used for up to ~$200, and the current 2.8-inch V4 lists at $99 sale versus $56.99 for the Plus.
