For most buyers, the standard PS5 is the correct console — the $599.99 Digital Edition or the $649.99 disc model — and the PS5 Pro is a specialist's tool for a specific room. The evidence is consistent and it isn't close: identical CPU, identical SSD, identical load times, identical library, zero exclusives, and a graphics advantage that is real but conditional on a high-end 4K display viewed from close range. Against that, a $300 premium that becomes $330 the moment you want to keep playing your discs. The Verge's ten-foot rule, IGN's "not essential," Ars's "money better spent on games," and a Metacritic spread running from 60 to 80 all encircle the same conclusion. The Pro is the most powerful console you can buy. That is not the same as the one most people should buy.

The final consideration is the one the spec sheets can't show: trajectory. In a normal generation you'd wait for the Pro's price to soften. This is not a normal generation. Console pricing is being driven upward by a memory shortage both Sony and Microsoft expect to worsen through 2027, so the Pro is unlikely to get cheaper and the base PS5 is unlikely to either. That reframes the decision as buy-what-you-need-now rather than wait-for-the-deal. PSSR will keep improving and its game list will keep growing, which strengthens the Pro's long-term case for the enthusiast who fits the profile. But for everyone whose television or couch doesn't cooperate, the math is stable and simple: the standard PS5 plays every one of the same games, loads them just as fast, and leaves $300 in your pocket. Cerny built the Pro to be, in his words, the product of "the time-intensive decision to build our own technology." It shows. It's genuinely impressive engineering. It's also, for most people, an answer to a question they weren't asking.

For 1080p or far-seated 4K, the $599.99–$649.99 base PS5 is the better buy.
Can the standard PS5 use PSSR?
No, and it never will. PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) runs on dedicated machine-learning hardware that only exists inside the PS5 Pro's GPU. The base PS5 has no ML silicon, so the feature is architecturally impossible there — not a software lock Sony could remove in a future update.
How much faster is the PS5 Pro than the PS5?
