The Retroid Pocket 5 and the Retroid Pocket 6 are the same idea built fourteen months apart, sold side by side, separated by about thirty-five dollars. Both are 5.5-inch, 1080p AMOLED Android handhelds with hall-effect thumbsticks, analog shoulder triggers, a microSD slot, and a USB-C port that will throw a picture at your television. Photograph them from three feet away and you will lose track of which is which. Retroid, one suspects, is counting on exactly that.
What the thirty-five dollars actually buys is a full generation of Qualcomm silicon, double the refresh rate, a fifth more battery, faster RAM, faster radios, and roughly a 69% jump in single-core throughput. What it stopped buying, somewhere around March, was any pretense that 2026 is a normal year to sell computer hardware. The memory market detonated, the good configuration of the Pocket 6 got quietly executed, and the Pocket 5 — a device from September 2024 that should by rights be discontinued — is instead still on the shelf and, as of mid-July, just got a spec bump. This is a review of two handhelds and one accident of timing. We go component by component, then we play both of them, then we tell you which one to buy and why the answer is less obvious than the spec sheet makes it look.
The $35 Question

Retroid sells you the older, slower, cheaper handheld and the newer, faster, dearer one at the same time, from the same store, and lets you decide whether a generation of silicon is worth the price of two pizzas. That framing is deliberate. The Pocket 6 is not a replacement for the Pocket 5 the way the iPhone 16 replaces the 15; it is the upsell sitting one row up in the checkout, and Retroid has designed the two products so that the difference is legible on a spec sheet and nearly invisible in a photograph. The company that pioneered the annual retro-handheld refresh has, this year, simply refused to retire last year's model.
Why both are still on sale in 2026
In a sane market the Pocket 5 would already be gone. It launched at $199 in September 2024 on a Snapdragon 865 — a 2020 flagship chip — and by mid-2026 it should have been quietly discontinued to make room. Instead the opposite happened. That is the honest frame for this entire comparison. The Pocket 5 is not bad. It is, by any historical measure, an excellent little emulation box. It just happens to sit thirty-five dollars below something meaningfully faster, made by the same company, sold on the same page. The rest of this review is an attempt to figure out when that thirty-five dollars is the easiest yes in the category and when it is money you should keep.

The RAM inversion nobody planned

Silicon: 865 vs 8 Gen 2
This is the row Retroid wants you to buy, and it is the row that most deserves the money. A Snapdragon 865 and a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 are not neighbors; they are a full architectural generation and two process nodes apart.
The chips on paper
The Pocket 5's Snapdragon 865 is Qualcomm's SM8250 “Kona,” a 7nm flagship from early 2020 built around the old Kryo 585 arrangement and the Adreno 650 GPU. It was superb in its day and it remains entirely competent. The Pocket 6's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is the SM8550 “Kalama,” a 4nm N4P part with a one-plus-four-plus-three core layout — a prime Cortex-X3 at 3.2GHz, four Cortex-A715/A710 performance cores at 2.8GHz, three A510 efficiency cores at 2.0GHz — feeding the Adreno 740, a GPU with hardware ray tracing and full Vulkan 1.3 support. In phone terms, that is a jump from 2020 to 2023. In emulator terms, which is the only term that matters here, it is the difference between “GameCube if you are careful” and “GameCube at three times native resolution.”
What 69% feels like
Geekbench 6 single-core listings for the two devices circulate at roughly 1,176 for the Pocket 5 and roughly 1,985 for the Pocket 6 — a jump of about 69%, and the GPU delta is even larger, in the neighborhood of two-to-one on the Adreno 740's side. Numbers, though, are not the point; frametimes are. On the Pocket 5, PlayStation 2 emulation is a coin toss and GameCube is a curated list. On the Pocket 6, both tip from “maybe” to “yes, and with upscaling.” Russ at Retro Game Corps framed the value bluntly: “Even at $245 it’s the most affordable Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 handheld on the market. The 12GB RAM model provides more headroom for PC gaming, and it’s a bummer that it’s discontinued.” That “most affordable 8 Gen 2” line is the Pocket 6's entire reason to exist, and it is true.
The driver story
Raw silicon is only half of it; the other half is drivers, and this is where the 8 Gen 2 quietly runs away with the contest. The Adreno 740 has years of phone-ecosystem optimization behind it, including the open-source Turnip Vulkan drivers that fix the specific glitches that plague Switch and heavy PC-game emulation. HandheldRank, comparing the Pocket 6 to its stablemate the now-discontinued Pocket G2, put it plainly: “The RP6 wins here, and it’s not close. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has years of driver optimization from the Android phone ecosystem (Turnip Drivers).” The same maturity that makes the 8 Gen 2 a safe bet also means fewer nasty surprises: on the Pocket 5's older Adreno 650 the driver stack is stable but the ceiling is simply lower. You are not fighting the Pocket 5; you are just standing on a shorter ladder.
The 60Hz vs 120Hz Panel
Both handhelds use a 5.5-inch, 1920×1080 AMOLED panel. The Pocket 5 clocks it at 60Hz; the Pocket 6 doubles that to 120Hz. This is the second headline row, and it is also the one most likely to sell you something you do not need.
Same glass, different clock
To be clear about what is and is not different: the resolution, the panel technology, the color, the black levels, the diagonal — all effectively the same. Where 120Hz actually pays
Here is the deadpan truth the marketing will not tell you: for the overwhelming majority of what these devices exist to play, 120Hz does nothing. The Super Nintendo ran at 60Hz (50 in PAL). The PlayStation ran at 60. The GameCube ran at 60. A Genesis does not care how fast your panel can refresh because it will never hand it more than sixty frames. The third decisive row is power, and it splits into three sub-questions: how big the tank is, how fast it refills, and how much it weighs in your bag.
The capacity math
The Pocket 5 carries a 5,000mAh cell; the Pocket 6 bumps that to 6,000mAh — 20% more raw capacity. In practice the runtime gap is smaller than 20%, because the 8 Gen 2's 4nm process is more efficient per clock than the 865's 7nm, which claws some of the deficit back on the Pocket 6's side while also driving a faster, hungrier chip. For a device you top up between commutes or lunch breaks, that is a real quality-of-life gap: the Pocket 6 goes from “flat” to “usable” in the time it takes to make coffee, while the Pocket 5 wants to be left on the cable overnight. If you are the sort of person who forgets to charge things until you need them, 27W is worth more to you than the extra 1,000mAh.
The weight you carry
Nothing is free. The Pocket 6 pays for its bigger battery, faster chip, and active cooling fan with mass. The Pocket 5 weighs about 280 grams; the Pocket 6 lands somewhere around 305 to 320 depending on which listing you trust (Retroid and its resellers have not been perfectly consistent, so we quote a range rather than pretend at a single figure). Video-Out, Wi-Fi, and LineageOS
Beyond the four headline rows sit the connectivity and software details, and this is where a couple of the internet's comparison tables get sloppy. Let us clean them up.
Radios and the "mobile data" myth

The Pocket 5 will typically drive a TV at 4K30, or 4K60 through Retroid's official dock; the Pocket 6, on its faster USB-C 3.1 pipe, does 4K60 directly. LineageOS and Retroid's update sins
The most interesting software development of 2026 favors the Pocket 6: as of July 1, per 9to5Google's coverage, the Pocket 6 gained official LineageOS support. LineageOS 23.2 is based on Android 16 — four full Android releases ahead of the stock Android 13 both devices ship with — which the community reports brings measurable performance and battery-longevity gains. This matters because Retroid's own update record is, to be polite, thin. 9to5Google's own framing: “given Retroid’s poor history with software updates, you probably won’t get many.” A device that the community keeps current is a device with a longer useful life, and right now the Pocket 6 is the one getting that community attention. Development for the Pocket 5, the G2, and the Nova is underway, but the Pocket 6 is first in line — one more small weight on the newer device's side of the scale.
The Memory Crunch and the Price

The timeline

Meanwhile the Pocket 5 ran the opposite play: after a brief free-RAM-upgrade promotion in early July, Retroid made 12GB/128GB the standard configuration on July 15 and raised the price ten dollars to $209. Two devices, one shortage, two different survival tactics.
The RAMpocalypse in Retroid's own words
The company was unusually candid about why. On the Pocket 6 price move, Retroid's statement (via Android Authority) was: “The recent surge in memory pricing has reached a level that we are unfortunately unable to absorb.” Shawn Wilkins at Steam Deck HQ, reporting the same week, called it what it was: “The increasingly difficult RAM shortage continues to impact hardware companies across the industry.” The same crunch temporarily killed the Pocket G2 entirely in March. The practical read: $209 buys the Pocket 5, $244 buys the Pocket 6, and if you want a 12GB Pocket 6 you pay $279 for the privilege of less storage than the tier it replaced. - The co-op / living-room player. You dock to a TV and hand a friend a second controller for Windjammers, Mario Kart: Double Dash, or Tekken. The ceiling nobody clears
One firm correction to some 2026 marketing copy: neither device runs PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360. Claims that the Pocket 6 handles “seventh-generation ports” are false. RPCS3 and Xenia on this class of chip are a slideshow. The Odin 2 Portal problem
The Pocket 6's single most dangerous rival costs five dollars more. AYN's Odin 2 Portal, at $249, packs the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and Adreno 740 into a device with a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz OLED and an enormous 8,000mAh battery. For five dollars over the Pocket 6 you get a substantially bigger screen and a third more battery, at the cost of pocketability. If your priority is the biggest, longest-lasting 8 Gen 2 handheld and you do not mind the size, the Odin 2 Portal makes the Pocket 6 look small in every sense. The Steam Deck ceiling
And then there is the elephant. The Steam Deck OLED, now $789 after its May 2026 hike, is a different class of machine entirely — an x86 PC that plays not just retro but Wii U, PS3, and the actual PC back catalog. It is also nearly four times the price, heavier, and a different job. For accuracy purists who care more about correctness than upscaling, dedicated FPGA hardware like the Analogue 3D for N64 or a MiSTer Multisystem is yet another axis of the hobby. - You want the device to age well. More silicon headroom, mature Turnip drivers, official LineageOS support, and Wi-Fi 7 all mean a longer useful life.
- You top up on the go. 27W fast charging and the 6,000mAh cell make it the better commuter for long or unpredictable days.
- You dock to a TV. The 4K60 output and headroom make it the better living-room machine.
Buy neither if…
- You want 4:3. The Retroid Nova's squarer panel is a better fit for NES/SNES/GameCube-heavy libraries.
- You want the biggest 8 Gen 2. The AYN Odin 2 Portal, at +$5, gives you a 7-inch screen and 8,000mAh.
- You want PS3, Wii U, or PC. That is a Steam Deck, at nearly four times the price.
- You want dirt-cheap 2D. A Miyoo Mini Plus at about $54 plays your entire 8- and 16-bit library for a quarter of the money.

The Retroid Pocket 6 earns an 8.5/10 — the most capable pocketable emulation handheld at its price, held back half a point by the memory-crunch pricing, the amputated 12GB tier, and Saltalamacchia's fair complaint that Retroid “played it too safe to turn heads” when “a $250 device should have something unique.” The Retroid Pocket 5 earns a 7.5/10 — a genuinely excellent machine wearing a two-year-old chip, kept relevant by the $209 price and the surprise 12GB bump, docked a full point only because something 69% faster sits one row up on the same checkout page.
