Why this comparison is stranger than it looks

These two devices are near-twins in provenance. The Pocket 6 went up for preorder on October 27, 2025; the G2 followed on October 28 — one day apart. Some 2026 spec tables list the Pocket 6’s launch as “January 2026,” but that is the wider retail shipping window, not the announcement, and it creates a misleading sense of a generational gap that does not exist. It is an 8-core part topping out around 2.8 GHz, paired with an Adreno A22 GPU under Qualcomm’s newer Adreno naming scheme. On paper it is the more modern, more purpose-fit silicon. In practice — and this is the through-line of the whole comparison — purpose-built and new are not the same thing as supported.

Adreno 740 vs Adreno A22, and the “2x” claim

Both HandheldRank and RetroHandheldHQ summarize the graphics gap identically: “The Pocket 6 packs roughly twice the GPU horsepower of the G2, thanks to the Adreno 740 versus the Adreno A22.” Treat “twice” as a headline, not a measurement. The raw silicon is closer than that — community testing puts the G2’s GPU only about 8–10% behind the Adreno 740 in synthetic terms, and around twice the throughput of the older Snapdragon 865 in the Pocket 5. The reason the felt gap is larger than the silicon gap is drivers, which get their own section because they deserve it.

The paradox: the newer chip is the one that died

Here is the joke the market told. The G2 has the newer, gaming-specific chip — the one you would assume is the future. This is the tier people actually cross-shop these devices for. On the Pocket 6, RetroDodo’s Brandon Saltalamacchia reports PS2 running “at 1.5x and 2x native resolution” and GameCube “at 3x native resolution,” with heavier cases like God of War II around 2.5x and Gran Turismo 4 playable after minor tweaks. GameCube’s canonical stress test — F-Zero GX, the Amusement Vision racer that has been the “if it runs this, it runs anything” benchmark for a decade — clears 3x on the Pocket 6, alongside the perennially brutal Rogue Squadron games. Wii is practical too: Super Mario Galaxy, Xenoblade Chronicles, Donkey Kong Country Returns.

The G2 is genuinely close here, which is what made it such an appealing value while it lasted. Steam Deck HQ’s Noah Kupetsky measured PSP at 4x, PS2 at 2.5x, and flatly reported PS3 as “not enjoyable.” Another tester found the G2 handling “PSP, PS2, and GameCube at native 1080p without breaking a sweat.” For a library that tops out at GameCube, the G2 delivered what RetroHandheldHQ called “90% of the experience at a meaningfully lower price.” That number is real. Switch and above: the Pocket 6’s moat

The Pocket 6 is a sixth-generation-and-earlier powerhouse that reaches selectively into Switch; the G2 is a sixth-generation-and-earlier powerhouse that mostly does not. For the record, none of this is legally fraught: emulating hardware you do not hold a license to is settled as lawful in the United States since Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. v. Both panels are 5.5-inch, 1920×1080 AMOLED — sharp, contrasty, and, in Saltalamacchia’s words about the Pocket 6, enough to make “the device feel incredibly modern.” The difference is refresh rate: 120Hz on the Pocket 6, 60Hz on the G2. For emulation this matters less than the spec implies — the overwhelming majority of retro content is capped at 60fps or below, and a 60Hz panel displays it perfectly. Where 120Hz earns its keep is native Android gaming and the general feel of the UI, both of which are, not coincidentally, the areas where the Pocket 6’s chip and drivers are already ahead. The G2’s 60Hz panel is not a flaw; it is a correct decision for a device pitched at PS2-and-below emulation.

6,000 vs 5,000 mAh

The Pocket 6 carries a 6,000 mAh battery with 27W fast charging; the G2 carries 5,000 mAh. Real-world endurance on the Pocket 6, per multiple reviews, runs roughly 8–10 hours on light 8- and 16-bit systems, about 4.5 hours in mixed use, and 2.5–3 hours when the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is fully pinned on GameCube or Switch. The G2’s smaller cell and passive cooling shift that curve down and flatten its ceiling — it cannot sustain the same peak draw, so it does not need to feed one. Twenty percent more battery plus a fan is the kind of advantage that reads as boring on a spec sheet and matters enormously three hours into a flight.

The Pocket 6 has an active fan, removable stick caps, and RGB lighting; the G2 has none of those and is passively cooled. Retroid’s update track record

The story does not end at launch firmware, but the reason it does not is worth stating carefully, because Retroid’s own update history is poor. When 9to5Google covered the Pocket 6’s LineageOS support, it did not mince words: “updates are not something that the company is particularly great at,” and “given Retroid’s poor history with software updates, you probably won’t get many.” Buying a Retroid on the promise of official OS upgrades is a bad bet on both devices. LineageOS 23.2 changes the math

On July 1, 2026, the Pocket 6 gained official LineageOS 23.2 support — a build based on Android 16, four full Android releases ahead of the stock Android 13 it shipped with. 9to5Google’s coverage cites “significant performance increases, arguably better battery longevity” from the newer base. That is a community-driven leapfrog that inverts the OS comparison entirely: the Pocket 6 goes from two versions behind to two versions ahead. What “discontinued” actually means here

On March 16, 2026, at 9 PM Eastern, Retroid announced the G2’s discontinuation; the store listing read “Sold Out” within minutes. GamesRadar ran the headline straight: “Weeks after the Steam Deck disappeared, Retroid discontinues Pocket G2 ‘due to ongoing fluctuations in memory pricing.’” Retroid framed it as temporary — it hopes to bring the device back “when market conditions allow” — and pointed prospective buyers to the Pocket 5 in the interim. As of this writing in late July 2026, per Android Authority and Notebookcheck, it has not come back. “Temporarily discontinued” is doing a great deal of load-bearing work in that sentence.

The RAM crisis in one paragraph

The mechanism is not mysterious. Through late 2025 and into 2026, memory fabricators shifted capacity toward high-bandwidth memory for AI accelerators, and the price of the LPDDR5X these handhelds use spiked. Retroid’s own statement on the Pocket 6 price hike, via Android Authority, was candid: “The recent surge in memory pricing has reached a level that we are unfortunately unable to absorb.” Steam Deck HQ’s Shawn Wilkins put the industry frame on it: “The increasingly difficult RAM shortage continues to impact hardware companies across the industry.” The G2 sat only $20–45 below the Pocket 6 with a chip the software ecosystem had not adopted; when margins evaporated, it was the obvious thing to cut. Even Russ at Retro Game Corps, lamenting the parallel loss of the Pocket 6’s 12GB tier — “it’s a bummer that it’s discontinued” — conceded that at $245 the 8GB Pocket 6 “is the most affordable Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 handheld on the market.” The G2 was collateral damage in a fight over silicon it wasn’t even using.

Who Each One Is For (Five Scenarios)

Buy the Pocket 6 if…

You want Switch or demanding Wii emulation. This is the single clearest case. The 8 Gen 2’s driver maturity is the whole game, and the Pocket 6 wins it “and it’s not close.”

You dock to a TV. The Pocket 6 outputs 4K at 60Hz over USB-C; the G2 tops out at 1080p. If your plan involves a dock and a couch, this is decided before you finish reading the sentence.

You play native Android games, not just emulators. 120Hz, the mature chip, and — critically — the fact that apps like Fortnite and Netflix games actually launch make the Pocket 6 the only sane choice for a device that doubles as an Android gaming tablet.

Hunt a used G2 if…

Your library stops at GameCube and you want the smaller, lighter body. The G2 delivers, in RetroHandheldHQ’s phrase, “90% of the experience at a meaningfully lower price,” in a 280g package. If you find one used, well below its $219 last-retail — call it sub-$180 — and you have realistic expectations about Switch and app compatibility, it is a fine machine. Buy neither if…

Migrating From a G2 to a Pocket 6

What actually needs to move

The data-backed pick

The Retroid Pocket 6, at $244. Not because it is twice the machine — the single-core gap is 11% and the honest GPU gap is closer to 10% than to the “2x” headline. The Pocket 6 wins because the numbers that matter are not the silicon numbers. It wins because driver maturity turns a modest hardware lead into a decisive usable lead on Switch, on demanding Android games, and on anything that needs Turnip to behave. It wins because it outputs 4K, lasts longer, and refreshes at 120Hz. It wins because LineageOS 23.2 handed it a software future its own manufacturer would not. And it wins, above all, because you can actually buy it.

RetroHandheldHQ called the G2 “the smarter buy,” and on the day that sentence was published — $219 for 90% of the experience — it was correct. Saltalamacchia’s complaint about the Pocket 6, that “Retroid have played it too safe to turn heads” and that “a $250 device should have something unique,” is also fair. The Pocket 6 is a slightly dull, extremely competent machine. But “smarter buy” is a claim about a transaction, and the G2’s transaction no longer exists. Ban at Retro Handhelds asked and answered the real question in his review: “If it were my money, would I buy the G2? No.” The market, four months later, agreed on his behalf.

If you’re shopping the used market

The only scenario in which the G2 is the right purchase in mid-2026 is a used unit, well under $180, bought by someone whose library tops out at GameCube and who has made peace with the driver and app-compatibility ceiling. Everyone else buys the Pocket 6 at $244 — or, if that is out of budget, steps down to the Pocket 5 rather than chasing a discontinued device. A comparison usually ends by telling you which product to buy. This one ends by telling you that the market already picked, and it picked the boring, powerful, purchasable one.

How much faster is the Pocket 6 than the G2?

Should I buy a used G2 instead of a new Pocket 6?
