So the arrival of the Retroid Pocket 6 roughly a year after the Retroid Pocket 5 is not a revolution, and anyone selling it as one is selling you something. It is a re-silicon. Same 5.5-inch AMOLED, same broad footprint, same Android 13, same "here is a very good emulation box for the money" thesis — with a two-generations-newer Qualcomm chip bolted underneath and a battery grown to feed it.

That makes this the least interesting kind of comparison to write and the most useful kind to read, because the only real question is arithmetic. The Pocket 6 is faster, brighter in motion, and heavier. The Pocket 5 is cheaper and lighter and, for most people's actual libraries, entirely sufficient. The delta the marketing wants you to feel is roughly 70% more compute for $45 more money. Whether that trade lands depends entirely on where your emulation ambitions top out — and on whether you believe a spec sheet or a stopwatch. This is a review of both, so we can be precise about it. For the broader lineage these things descend from, the handheld game console is a 45-year-old idea; the novelty here is putting a 2022 phone flagship in one.

The Two Devices, Plainly

Before the tables and the benchmark theater, it helps to say what each machine actually is, and to reset one number the supplied brief got wrong.

The Pocket 5, one year and one crash later

The Retroid Pocket 5 shipped in September 2024 at $199. For that money it did something the category had not managed at the price: it put a proper 5.5-inch 1080p AMOLED panel in front of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 — a real 2020 flagship — with 8GB of LPDDR4x, 128GB of UFS 3.1 storage, a 5,000mAh battery, hall-effect sticks, and DisplayPort-over-USB-C output. It weighed 280g and ran Android 13. It was, and is, a genuinely good machine, and the fact that you can now find it on sale (and around $175 used) has not changed that. What changed is the neighborhood, which we will get to.

The Pocket 6, a re-silicon not a reinvention

Retroid opened Pocket 6 preorders on October 27, 2025, with wide retail following in early 2026. The chassis is recognizably the same design language, slightly enlarged. The panel is the same size and resolution. Android is the same version. What moved is everything on the board that costs money: a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, LPDDR5x memory, up to 256GB of UFS 3.1, a 120Hz refresh rate, a 6,000mAh battery with 27W charging, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3, an active cooling fan, and clean 4K60 video output. It is heavier — somewhere between 304g and 320g depending on which listing you trust — because a bigger battery and a hotter chip demand more chassis. Gardiner Bryant, in his hands-on, was sent the Light Purple unit and noted it "immediately reminded him of the shade used on the Lilac Purple versions of the Sony PSP," which is the correct instinct: this is a device consciously echoing the PSP's 2004 form-factor promise, two decades and several Moore's-law doublings later.

The premise, and one number the brief gets wrong

Every roundup you will read repeats a claim that the 8 Gen 2 is "40 to 60% faster" than the Pocket 5's chip. That figure is not wrong, but it is a real-world emulation range, not a raw-compute one, and quoting it as the headline undersells the hardware. In Geekbench 6 single-core the Pocket 6 lands around 1,985 against roughly 1,176 for the Pocket 5 — a ~69% gap. The honest way to state it is: the silicon is about 70% quicker on paper, and that translates to a 40–60% uplift in the emulation workloads where a GPU or a driver, not the CPU, is doing the limiting. Both numbers are true. They just describe different layers of the same machine. Keep that distinction; it is the whole review.

Reading between the rows

The four rows that decide the purchase are SoC, refresh rate, battery, and price. Everything else is either shared (the panel, the OS, the storage medium, the hall sticks) or a rounding error you will never feel (Bluetooth 5.1 versus 5.3 will not change your life; Wi-Fi 7 matters only if you are streaming a PC over a mesh network you do not own yet). The LPDDR4x-to-LPDDR5x jump sounds dramatic and is mostly a byproduct of the platform change rather than something you will clock. UFS 3.1 is UFS 3.1 on both; your load times are identical until the CPU behind them stops being the bottleneck.

Two spec-sheet myths worth strangling

First: you will see aggregator charts claiming the Pocket 5 uses a MediaTek Dimensity 1100. It does not. It is a Snapdragon 865, full stop, and any comparison built on the Dimensity number is built on a hallucination — treat that whole page as suspect. Second, and more common: charts that call the Pocket 5's screen an IPS LCD against the Pocket 6's AMOLED. Both panels are AMOLED. The Pocket 5 was, in fact, one of the cheapest ways to get a 1080p OLED into your hands in 2024. The display difference between these two devices is refresh rate and nothing else: 60Hz versus 120Hz, same pixels, same blacks, same color. If a review tells you the Pocket 6's screen is a "panel upgrade," it did not read the spec sheet it printed.

Kona meets Kalama: two flagships, two years apart

The Snapdragon 865 (codename Kona) was Qualcomm's 2020 flagship, built on a 7nm process, paired with the Adreno 650. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 (Kalama) was Qualcomm's late-2022 flagship on a 4nm node, with a 1+4+3 core arrangement — a Cortex-X3 prime core at 3.2GHz, four A715 performance cores at 2.8GHz, three A510 efficiency cores at 2.0GHz — and the Adreno 740, which brought Vulkan 1.3 and hardware ray tracing to the party. By 2026 both are old phone chips. But they are two years and two full process nodes apart, and in the thermally starved world of a handheld, the newer part's efficiency matters as much as its peak. A cooler chip throttles later, and a chip that throttles later is a chip that holds its framerate through the second hour of a session.

The ~70% headline, and what it becomes in practice

The single-core Geekbench spread of ~1,985 to ~1,176 is your clean ~70% number. But emulation is rarely CPU-bound in the way Geekbench is. As the reviewers at HandheldRank put it flatly: "The RP6 wins here, and it's not close. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has years of driver optimization from the Android phone ecosystem." A newer chip with immature drivers can benchmark higher and still play worse — a lesson the Pocket G2's exotic silicon taught the hard way. The Screen: 120Hz Is the Tell

The display is where the Pocket 6's "newness" is most visible and least consequential, which is a very Retroid sentence to have to write.

Same panel, faster clock

To repeat, because the internet keeps getting it wrong: both devices carry a 5.5-inch 1920×1080 AMOLED. Brandon Saltalamacchia at RetroDodo called the Pocket 6's screen "a beautiful display, one I simply cannot fault," and added that "a 5.5-inch AMOLED display makes the device feel incredibly modern." Every word of that applied to the Pocket 5 too. The single change is the refresh ceiling doubling from 60Hz to 120Hz. That is a real, worthwhile upgrade for a specific slice of what you will do with the machine, and irrelevant to a larger slice.

Where 120Hz earns its keep

The 120Hz panel pays off in three places: the Android UI itself (scrolling menus, launchers, and storefronts feel liquid), native Android games that render above 60fps, and the handful of emulated systems and enhancement modes that can push high frame rates. If you use the device as a general Android gaming handheld as well as an emulator — a genuine use case, given the 8 Gen 2 — the smoothness is immediately legible. It is the difference between a device that feels like a 2022 flagship phone and one that feels like a 2020 flagship phone, which is exactly what these two chips are.

The retro paradox: most of your library is 60Hz or less

And now the deflation. The overwhelming majority of the content you bought this thing to play was authored for displays running at 60Hz, 50Hz, or the strange fractional rates of the CRT era. A Super Nintendo game does not become smoother on a 120Hz panel; it becomes, at best, a candidate for black-frame insertion or better frame-pacing, neither of which is the same as "120 frames." The Pocket 6's cell grew 20%, to 6,000mAh. Combined with the 4nm chip's efficiency, that buys real endurance. Saltalamacchia reported "around 4.5 hours of battery life" in mixed use, with lighter systems stretching toward 8–10 hours and full-tilt PS2/GameCube sessions pulling it down to roughly 2.5–3 hours. The Pocket 5, with its 5,000mAh cell and hungrier 7nm chip, lands closer to 3.5 hours under heavy emulation. So the practical gap is on the order of an hour-plus in the demanding scenarios — meaningful for a plane or a long commute, marginal for an evening on the couch next to a charger.

27W, active cooling, and the throttle line

The Pocket 6 adds 27W fast charging — testers measured roughly 25–26W in practice — which the Pocket 5 lacks entirely. On a device you top up between sessions, fast charging quietly matters more than an extra 1,000mAh. Both machines use an active cooling fan; the Pocket 6's is retuned to keep the hotter 8 Gen 2 in check, and the payoff is a later throttle line. Frame pacing under sustained load holds longer, and the audio-sync drift that occasionally nagged the Pocket 5 under stress is largely gone. That is up to 40g and a couple of millimeters of thickness, and you will feel it in a two-hour handheld session — the Pocket 6 is a device you rest on your thighs, not one you hold aloft indefinitely. Retroid also lets you choose a D-pad-top or offset-stick-top layout at checkout on the Pocket 6, with hall sticks and analog L2/R2 triggers on both machines. If pocketability and all-day comfort rank above raw power for you, the Pocket 5's lighter body is a genuine argument, not a consolation.

Emulation, From GBA to Switch

This is the play-through, and where the money either justifies itself or doesn't. I will move up the difficulty curve, because that curve is exactly where the two devices separate. First, the honest loadout — which app to run per system, and where each machine lands:

The settled tier: everything up to Dreamcast

From the NES through the PlayStation, the Game Boy line, the DS, the N64, the PSP, the Saturn, and the Dreamcast, there is no meaningful contest. Both machines run this entire span flawlessly, at high internal resolutions, with the fan barely spinning. The Pocket 6 will upscale PS1 and PSP to 4x where the Pocket 5 might sit at 2–3x, but both outputs look terrific on a 5.5-inch 1080p panel and you would need a still frame and a grudge to tell them apart in motion. If your library lives here — and for a great many buyers, it does — the Pocket 5 is not a compromise. It is the same experience for $45 less. This is the tier a $60 device like a Miyoo Mini Plus also targets, incidentally, which is worth remembering before you talk yourself into the flagship.

The contested middle: PS2, GameCube, Wii, 3DS

Here the gap opens, and here is where the Pocket 6 starts earning its premium. On PlayStation 2 via NetherSX2, the Pocket 5 is playable but a tinkerer's machine — native to 1.5x with per-game settings and the occasional dip. Saltalamacchia's verdict on the Pocket 6 was characteristically dry: "PS2 performance was great if you don't mind tinkering," running the harder titles at 1.5x and 2x native, with something like God of War II pushing toward 2.5x and Gran Turismo 4 playable with minor tweaks. GameCube is the sharper divide. The Pocket 5 handles the lighter canon — Wind Waker, Luigi's Mansion, Melee — and strains beyond it. The Pocket 6 runs GameCube at 3x native, clearing genuinely demanding titles like Rogue Squadron and F-Zero GX. If you have ever tried to emulate F-Zero GX — a game built on Sega's Amusement Vision engine and long treated as the canonical hardest thing to run on the platform — you understand that "3x native, stable" is the flex the Pocket 5 cannot match. This is the "most capable sub-$300 handheld" argument in one system, and it is real. But let me correct a claim you will see attached to this device, including in the material I was handed: the Pocket 6 does not run "nearly all PS3 and Xbox 360-era ports." It doesn't. This is a sixth-generation-and-earlier machine that reaches selectively into the seventh via Switch. Fire up RPCS3 or Xenia and you will get a slideshow, because that is what a phone chip does with a Cell processor or a Xenon. Anyone promising you PS3 in your palm at this price is describing a future device. Set your expectations at PS2/GameCube/Wii/3DS with a Switch bonus and you will be delighted; set them at PS3 and you will feel lied to.

One legal aside, because this is the sort of site that knows the law as well as the lore: these machines ship with no games, and that is deliberate. The emulators themselves are legal — the Ninth Circuit settled that in Sony Computer Entertainment v. Casual and completionist

For the casual player — someone dipping into a JRPG on the couch, a puzzle game before bed, a Genesis platformer on a lunch break — the two devices are functionally identical, and the correct purchase is the Pocket 5 unless you happen to want the 120Hz menus. Nothing in a casual library taxes the 865. The completionist, the player grinding a 90-hour RPG or hunting every collectible across a GameCube backlog, has a different calculus. Battery endurance and thermal sustain become real: the Pocket 6's extra hour-plus and later throttle line mean fewer charge breaks and no framerate sag in hour three of a Xenoblade session. If your completionism reaches into GameCube and Wii, the Pocket 6 is the better companion; if it lives on PS1 and DS, the Pocket 5 will see you through to 100% just as happily.

Speedrunner and co-op

The speedrunner cares about exactly two things: input latency and frame consistency. Neither device is a competition-legal reference platform — serious runs still happen on original hardware or a tuned PC — but for practice, the Pocket 6's 120Hz panel and steadier frame-pacing under load give it a modest, real edge in responsiveness and in reading fast on-screen state. The hall-effect sticks on both resist the drift that would ruin a run. For co-op, the story is the video-out port. Both machines drive an external display over USB-C, but the Pocket 6's clean 4K60 output makes it the more credible living-room console: dock it, pair two controllers over its low-latency Bluetooth 5.3, and run four-player Mario Kart: Double Dash or a GameCube party night at 3x native on the TV. The Pocket 5 can do this too, typically at 4K30 or via its dock, and for 2D co-op that is plenty; for upscaled GameCube on a big panel, the Pocket 6 pulls ahead.

The commute, and the word "pocket"

For the mobile player — the daily commuter, the traveler — two things collide. The Pocket 6's battery and fast charging are the friend of long transit; its weight and 205mm width are the enemy of the word "pocket," which both devices use generously. Neither slides into a pair of jeans. But the Pocket 5 at 280g is the one you will more happily hold on a standing train, and the one whose lighter body fatigues your hands less across a two-hour flight's worth of PSP. The mobile buyer is the one case where the older, lighter machine has a comfort argument that survives contact with the spec sheet — and where, if your real constraint is truly pocket-sized, neither Retroid is the answer and something like a Miyoo is.

The Odin 2 Portal problem

The most awkward name on that list for Retroid is the AYN Odin 2 Portal. For $249 — five dollars over the Pocket 6 — you get the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, but wrapped around a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz AMOLED and an 8,000mAh battery. It is a larger, longer-lasting machine with an even more spectacular screen, at a near-identical price. The Pocket 6's counter-arguments are real — it is far more pocketable, it has the choosable stick layout, and the smaller panel is easier to hold — but anyone shopping the Pocket 6 purely on power-per-dollar owes it to themselves to look at the Portal. The 8 Gen 2 handheld market in 2026 is a genuine field, and Retroid no longer has it to itself, as Russ at Retro Game Corps noted even while praising the Pocket 6: "Even at $245 it's the most affordable Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 handheld on the market." Affordable, yes — but by five dollars, not a category.

Below and above: the Miyoo floor and the Windows ceiling

Beneath both Retroids sits the budget floor, where a device like the Miyoo Mini Plus does the 8-, 16-, and 32-bit canon in a shirt pocket for a fraction of the money — the correct answer for a buyer whose library never leaves the fourth generation. Above them sits the ceiling: an x86 Windows handheld. The Windows-handheld crowd and the $789 Steam Deck OLED play native PC games and brute-force the heaviest emulation the Retroids only flirt with — at triple the price, triple the weight, and a battery life that would embarrass a Game Gear. And off to the side entirely sit the purists, who would rather have an FPGA box like the Analogue 3D reproduce one console perfectly than have a phone chip approximate a dozen. The Retroids are the sensible middle of that spectrum. The Pocket 5 is the value entry to the middle; the Pocket 6 is the top of it before the price curve goes vertical.

Pricing and the RAM Crunch

Pricing on the Pocket 6 has been a moving target, and the reason is the single most important market-context fact of 2026 in this category.

The RAMpocalypse, in Retroid's own words

The Pocket 6 launched into a memory-pricing spike that reshaped the entire handheld market. On March 2, 2026, Retroid raised the 8GB model and discontinued the 12GB/256GB tier outright, stating plainly that "the recent surge in memory pricing has reached a level that we are unfortunately unable to absorb." Shawn Wilkins at Steam Deck HQ framed it as an industry event, not a Retroid one: "The increasingly difficult RAM shortage continues to impact hardware companies across the industry." He was right — the same crunch temporarily killed the Steam Deck's cheaper configs and, weeks later, took out Retroid's own Pocket G2. The 12GB option eventually crawled back in June 2026, but only by halving its storage to 128GB and holding at $279. This is why the Pocket 6's price chart looks like a seismograph, and it is the same DRAM crisis that has frozen projects like RetroPie and rippled across every device with a memory chip in it. If you are pricing a Pocket 6 against a Pocket 5, you are not comparing two static numbers; you are comparing a stable $199 against a figure that has only moved upward.
