The Retroid Pocket 6 is the better handheld. The Retroid Pocket 5 is the better buy. If you want to stop reading here you may, and you will leave forty-five dollars richer or forty-five dollars more powerful depending on which of those two sentences you decided to trust.

For everyone still in the room: this is a comparison of two devices separated by roughly fourteen months, one Snapdragon generation, sixty hertz of refresh rate, a thousand milliamp-hours of battery, and — as of a price notice Retroid sent in March 2026 that read like a hostage letter drafted by an accountant — exactly forty-five dollars. The Retroid Pocket 5 arrived in late 2024 at $199. The Retroid Pocket 6 arrived in early 2026 at $229 and, thanks to a global memory market that has spent the year on fire, now sells for $244. That is the entire board. Everything after this is detail, and detail is the only thing worth paying us for.

What Retroid actually shipped

Retroid has been releasing a numbered Pocket at roughly the cadence of a phone manufacturer, and the formula by now is a known quantity: take a Qualcomm system-on-chip that flagship phones abandoned a couple of years ago, wrap it in a controller, bolt on an AMOLED panel, and undercut everything else on the shelf. The Pocket 5 ran that play with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 — the 2020 flagship, codename Kona — and it executed well enough that people stopped pretending a sub-$250 Android handheld had to feel like a compromise.

The Pocket 6 runs the same play one generation up. It swaps the 865 for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 — the 2022 flagship, codename Kalama, built on a 4nm process around a 3.2GHz Cortex-X3 prime core — keeps the 5.5-inch 1080p AMOLED, doubles the refresh ceiling to 120Hz, grows the battery from 5,000mAh to 6,000mAh, adds an actual cooling fan and Wi-Fi 7, and asks $45 more than its predecessor's launch price. On paper it is a clean generational bump. In practice the interesting question is not what changed. It is how little of what changed you will feel from the couch, and whether the fraction you do feel is worth the tariff.

The $45 question

Here is the framing the rest of this review defends. For $199 the Pocket 5 hands you the large majority of the Pocket 6's usable performance, the identical screen running at half the refresh, and a battery that lasts about an hour less. For $244 the Pocket 6 hands you the top slice of performance, a smoother operating system, an audible fan, and enough headroom to push confidently into GameCube, Wii, and a title-by-title relationship with Switch emulation that the 5 can only wave at from across the street.

Whether that trade is worth $45 depends entirely on where your library tops out. If your ceiling is the PlayStation 2, you are being asked to pay a 22.6% premium for headroom you will spend most evenings not touching. If your ceiling is GameCube and above — and specifically the demanding corners of it — the RP5 stops being a bargain and starts being a bottleneck. Everything below is an attempt to tell you which of those two people you are before you spend the money.

Why newer is not the same as better-for-you

The retro-handheld internet has a reflex, and the reflex is to buy the newest thing. It is usually wrong. The Pocket 5 did not get slower when the Pocket 6 launched; it got cheaper relative to its capability, which is the precise moment a piece of hardware becomes interesting rather than aspirational. The 865 is a 2020 chip, but 2020 flagships emulate the entire fifth and sixth console generations without drama, and most of what an actual human plays on one of these lives comfortably under that ceiling.

Phil Retro, revisiting the RP5 for HandheldRank in 2026, put the older device's predicament better than we could: in a vacuum, he wrote, the Pocket 5 is “still a fantastic gaming machine,” and “the problem isn't the device; it's the neighborhood it lives in.” That is the whole tension of this comparison in one line. Treat the model number as marketing, not guidance. The correct question is never which is newer. It is where your backlog tops out, how long you need the battery to last, and whether 120Hz in a menu you will look at for four seconds is worth real money to you.

What the numbers hide

Three rows in that table are doing all the work, and they are not the ones the spec-sheet crowd fixates on. The system-on-chip sets your emulation ceiling. The refresh rate decides whether the operating system feels modern. The battery decides whether the device survives a flight. Everything else — the storage tiers, the Hall-effect sticks, the byte-for-byte identical panel — is either shared between the two units or matters far less than the marketing implies.

Notice in particular what did not change. The display is the same 5.5-inch 1080p AMOLED on both; Retroid did not touch the panel, only the silicon driving it. The Adreno GPU jumped from the 650 to the 740, which sounds enormous and largely is, but GPU horsepower is not the thing that gates most emulators — CPU single-thread performance is, a point we spend real money on below. And both devices use Hall-effect analog sticks, the magnetic kind that never develop drift, so the single genuine reliability upgrade of the last handheld generation is present on the cheaper model too.

The footnotes Retroid would rather you skip

The specification that has changed most since launch is not on the device at all. It is the price, and it is joined at the hip to the RAM tier. The Pocket 6 launched in two configurations: an 8GB/128GB model at $229 and a 12GB/256GB range-topper at $279. By March 2026 the range-topper was gone and the base model had gained $15. That is not a spec sheet; it is a casualty report, and it earns its own section later because it is the single most 2026 thing about this entire comparison.

A second easily-missed footnote: at checkout, the Pocket 6 makes you pick a face layout — D-pad-above-stick or stick-above-D-pad — a decision you cannot change afterward and which the comparison charts never show you. The Pocket 5 has its own hidden advantage in the other direction: it can boot Linux. Retroid ships it with Android 13, but a community Linux path exists, and Andrew at Retro Handhelds specifically credited its “versatile gaming capabilities across Android, Switch emulation, and Linux firmware” as part of why he kept his unit. If you want a clean, controller-first front end instead of Android's home-screen sprawl, that is a mark for the older device that no spec chart will ever print.

The Silicon: 865 vs 8 Gen 2

This is the row that sold you the newer model, so let us take it apart honestly, because the marketing gap and the felt gap are different numbers and the space between them is worth exactly $45.

The Snapdragon 865, four years on

The Snapdragon 865 was Qualcomm's 2020 flagship, and holding one in a handheld in 2026 is a genuinely strange experience: the chip that ran the best Android phones of its year, now driving a controller and selling for two hundred dollars. Its prime core is a Cortex-A77 derivative, its graphics are the Adreno 650, and its practical emulation envelope covers everything from the Atari era through the PlayStation 2 without complaint. Andrew at Retro Handhelds stated the ceiling plainly: the 865 “affords you the luxury of being able to comfortably play up to PS2, with a smattering of Switch titles.” That word “smattering” is load-bearing, and we return to it below.

Where the 865 runs out of road is the pair of systems sitting just above the PS2 in difficulty: Dolphin's heavier GameCube and Wii titles at elevated internal resolution, and the current crop of Switch forks. On the Pocket 5, GameCube in practice means the tractable end of the library — Wind Waker, Luigi's Mansion, Melee — rather than the demanding end. It will run plenty. It will not run everything, and it will not run the punishing titles with the resolution multiplier cranked. For many buyers that is a ceiling they will never reach up and touch. For the ones who will, it is the entire reason the Pocket 6 exists.

The 8 Gen 2, the Adreno 740, and the fan

The Pocket 6's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is two flagship generations newer, paired with the Adreno 740 and — critically — an active cooling solution the Pocket 5 does not have: a copper heat spreader and a centrifugal fan drawing air from the rear. That fan is not a gimmick. Sustained emulation is a thermal problem as much as a compute one, and a chip that holds its boost clocks for an hour instead of throttling after fifteen minutes is worth more than the peak benchmark suggests. It is also, per Techxreviews, not silent: the aggressive “Sport” fan profile “is effective at cooling,” they noted, but “generates audible noise that users will definitely notice.” You are trading a whisper for headroom. That is usually the right trade, but it is a trade.

The extra headroom is real and measurable. DROIX's review clocked the platform at a full “60 FPS at 1080p” in NetherSX2, the current standard PlayStation 2 core descended from the desktop PCSX2 lineage, and found the PS Vita emulator Vita3K “runs exceptionally well.” Retro Game Corps, reviewing the 8GB unit after the price bump, made the point that even then it was “the most affordable Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 handheld on the market” — which is true, and also the most Retroid sentence ever written. The company's entire strategy is to be the cheapest door into a given tier of Qualcomm silicon. The 6 is the cheapest door into the 8 Gen 2 club. Whether you need to be inside that club is the only question that matters.

The benchmark reality: 83% on paper, ~70% in your hands

Here is the honest accounting. Synthetic benchmarks flatter the newer chip enormously. DROIX recorded an “82.7% uplift” for the Pocket 6 in AnTuTu, a total-system score folding GPU, memory bandwidth and CPU into one large number. In Geekbench 6 the single-core gap is smaller but still substantial, with the RP5 landing around 1,176 to the RP6's roughly 1,985 — about a 69% lead for the newer part.

Raw scores overstate the felt gap, and by a wide margin, because of what those scores measure versus what emulation actually does. Everything through the PlayStation 2 runs at full speed on both devices — the entire 8-bit, 16-bit and fifth-generation world, plus Dreamcast, PSP and most PS2, is a solved problem on a 2020 flagship. The systems where the 8 Gen 2 genuinely pulls away — GameCube at 3x, Wii, the heaviest PS2 titles — are the minority of a normal library. So while the RP5 posts roughly 55–60% of the RP6's raw compute, the experience it delivers across a real backlog lands closer to seventy percent of the newer machine, for eighty-one percent of the price. Seventy percent of the machine you will actually use for $45 less is the entire value argument, and it is why we have argued separately that the $244 Pocket 6 still wins for the buyers who need the top slice — and why the 5 wins for everyone who does not.

Screen, Battery, and Body

60Hz versus 120Hz: who actually notices

The panel is identical: a 5.5-inch, 1080p AMOLED on both, and it is genuinely excellent on both because it is the same glass. Andrew's line about the Pocket 5's display — “some smartphone displays don't look this good, even though they cost at least twice as much” — transfers verbatim to the 6. Brandon Saltalamacchia at RetroDodo, reviewing the 6, called the same panel “beautiful” and said the AMOLED “makes the device feel incredibly modern.” What changed between the generations is the refresh ceiling: 60Hz on the 5, 120Hz on the 6.

Be honest with yourself about where 120Hz lands. It matters in the Android interface, in menus, in home-screen scrolling, and in native Android games that can actually render at 120fps. It does not matter across the overwhelming majority of an emulated library, because a Super Nintendo game runs at 60 or 50fps and no refresh rate on earth invents frames the source material never produced. If you are buying one of these primarily to emulate — which is the entire point — the 120Hz panel is a luxury that touches the ten percent of your time spent in menus and almost none of the ninety percent spent in games. It is nice. It is not $45 on its own.

5,000 versus 6,000mAh and the missing fast charger

The battery grew from 5,000mAh to 6,000mAh, a 20% capacity increase, and the Pocket 6 pairs the larger cell with 27W wired charging — a real upgrade over the Pocket 5, which ships with no fast-charge support at all. Comparison sources put rated endurance at roughly 6.0 hours for the 6 against 5.0 for the 5, about a 17% real-world gain, which tracks with the bigger cell minus the newer chip's higher peak draw. Under genuine stress the numbers come down for both: the Pocket 5 manages around three and a half hours of heavy emulation, while DROIX drained the Pocket 6 in “4 hours 20 minutes” on a punishing loop, with lighter use stretching toward eight to ten hours.

The takeaway is not that the 6 lasts dramatically longer. It is that the 6 lasts a little longer while doing more work and refills far faster, which is the correct outcome and an undramatic one. If your use case is a long flight or a commute with no outlet, the extra hour and the 27W top-up genuinely matter. If you play ninety-minute sessions near a wall socket, this row is noise — with the single asterisk that the Pocket 5's total lack of fast charging is a real, daily papercut the spec difference understates.

Wi-Fi 7, video out, and the connectivity footnotes

The Pocket 6 steps up to Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.3, and several listings note added options including mobile-data connectivity. Wi-Fi 7 reads impressively and changes nothing about how the device plays; its practical value is faster ROM transfers over the network and lower-latency streaming from a PC or the cloud, both real and both niche. Bluetooth 5.3 is a marginal improvement for wireless pads and headphones — the kind of thing you notice only at the exact moment it fails on the older device.

Video out is the footnote the comparison charts routinely botch by listing it as an RP6 exclusive. It is not. Both devices drive an external display over USB-C DisplayPort: the Pocket 5 outputs 4K30 over the cable (4K60 through the official dock), and the Pocket 6 pushes 4K60 directly. Anyone telling you the 5 cannot output to a television is reading a spec sheet badly. What the 6 adds is a newer display pipeline and the connectivity headroom to feed a big panel more comfortably. If docked, big-screen play is central to your plan, the 6 is the better host — but the 5 is not the non-starter the internet occasionally claims.

The Emulation Ceiling

This is the section you came for, so here is the compatibility picture laid out plainly, followed by the parts nobody likes to say out loud: where the top of the chart actually is, and where the law sits underneath it.

Everything through PS2, and the demanding edge of GameCube

Both devices annihilate the first five console generations. NES, SNES, Genesis, PC Engine, the whole 8- and 16-bit world, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, PSP — all of it runs at full speed on the 865 and therefore trivially on the 8 Gen 2. This is the ninety percent of a normal library, and across that ninety percent the two devices are indistinguishable in every way that matters.

The divergence begins at the sixth generation's hard edge. On the Pocket 6, GameCube via Dolphin runs at 3x native on the punishing titles — F-Zero GX, Rogue Squadron — where the Pocket 5 is confined to the lighter end of the library. F-Zero GX is worth naming specifically: Sega's Amusement Vision built it on Triforce arcade hardware, it runs at a locked 60fps with thirty racers on screen, and it is the canonical stress test for GameCube emulation — the game reviewers reach for precisely because it breaks weaker hardware. PlayStation 2 tells the same story: the Pocket 6 handles most of the library at 1.5x to 2x, pushes God of War II toward 2.5x, and keeps Gran Turismo 4 playable with minor tweaks, while the Pocket 5 sticks closer to native resolution. If your backlog lives at or below the PS2, the 5 is enough. If it lives in the demanding corners of GameCube and Wii, the 6 is the one that stops making you tinker. The Switch and Wii question — and the law

Here is where knowing the law earns its keep. Start with what is settled: emulators are legal. In Sony Computer Entertainment v. Connectix Corp., 203 F.3d 596 (9th Cir. 2000), the Ninth Circuit held that reverse-engineering a console BIOS to build an emulator was fair use and “modestly transformative,” and that the emulator itself infringed nothing. Running a Dolphin or a NetherSX2 on either of these handhelds is not the legally interesting part.

The Switch is the legally interesting part. Yuzu, the emulator that made Switch play practical on Android handhelds, settled with Nintendo in early 2024 for $2.4 million and shut down; its sibling Ryujinx followed. Nintendo's theory was not that emulation is illegal — Connectix forecloses that — but that Yuzu trafficked in circumventing the console's encryption, since you need the system's own keys to decrypt games. So what runs on these devices today runs on community forks of abandoned code, using keys you are expected to have dumped yourself, title by title. The Pocket 5 manages Andrew's “smattering” — the lighter, better-optimized titles, often below full resolution. The Pocket 6, with more single-thread headroom and that fan, manages a broader set of select titles, still nowhere near “all,” still fork-and-game-dependent. Wii via Dolphin follows the same curve — selective on the 5, practical on the 6, with Galaxy, Xenoblade Chronicles and Donkey Kong Country Returns all in reach on the newer machine. If Switch and demanding Wii emulation are why you are shopping, the 6 is the honest answer and the 5 will disappoint you. If they are a novelty you will poke at twice and abandon, do not pay for them.

What neither device is

Now the correction the marketing will not make. Some spec sheets and more than one breathless YouTube thumbnail imply the Pocket 6 runs “PS3 and Xbox 360-era” titles. It does not. Both of these are sixth-generation-and-earlier machines: RPCS3 and Xenia run as slideshows on the 8 Gen 2, not as playable experiences. The ceiling is GameCube and Wii at elevated resolution, PS2 at 1.5–2x, 3DS upscaled, and select Switch titles — a genuinely impressive envelope for a $244 pocketable, and one that does not need inflation to sell itself. If you need seventh-generation emulation, you are describing a different and far more expensive category of device, and no amount of Snapdragon marketing changes that. The Pocket 5 and 6 are appliances for the era that ended with the PS2 and the GameCube, plus a bonus flirtation with the era after. Buy them for that. And note that setting either one up is still hands-on Android work rather than the boot-straight-into-games experience of a locked appliance like a Miyoo Mini Plus and its curated 6,041-game list — a different tool for a different temperament, at a fraction of the price and a fraction of the ceiling.

How It Actually Plays: 5 Scenarios

Specifications are hypotheticals. Here is how the choice resolves for five specific people, because you are one of them.

The casual and the commuter

The casual player wants to sit on the couch and play Chrono Trigger, a stack of Game Boy Advance games, and the occasional PS1 RPG. For this person the Pocket 5 is not merely adequate; it is arguably the smarter device, because every system on that list runs flawlessly on a 2020 flagship and the $45 saved never bought a single dropped frame. The AMOLED — the same panel on both — makes a sprite library look extravagant. Buy the 5, keep the money, put it toward an SD card.

The commuter plays in transit, away from power, and cares about exactly two things: endurance and how fast it refills. Here the Pocket 6's extra 1,000mAh and 27W charging finally earn their premium, and the Pocket 5's total lack of fast charging counts against it in a way benchmarks never show. An hour more runtime and an airport-lounge top-up that actually tops up is a real quality-of-life gain for someone whose sessions are defined by a train schedule. The commuter is the first of our five for whom the 6 is defensible on merits rather than vanity.

The completionist and the speedrunner

The completionist intends to work through a full-generation backlog, GameCube and PS2 included, at the best image quality the hardware allows, resolution multipliers on. This is the Pocket 6's home turf. The completionist is exactly the buyer who will reach the top slice of performance the 5 cannot — the demanding Dolphin titles at 3x, the heavy PS2 games above native — and for whom the fan-cooled 8 Gen 2 turns “will this run” into a non-question. Pay the $45; you will spend it, and you will spend it on F-Zero GX at 3x looking the way it never did on real hardware.

The speedrunner is a more interesting case, because speedrunning rewards consistency and input latency over raw ceiling. A runner practicing a SNES or GBA category does not need the 8 Gen 2 at all — the 865 runs those platforms with frame-perfect reliability, and the identical screen and Hall-effect sticks mean input feel is a wash between the two. Where the 6 helps a runner is on the demanding platforms where a throttling chip introduces variance: a fan that holds clocks is a fan that holds frame times, and consistent frame times are the whole game. For retro-era runs, the 5 is plenty. For sixth-generation runs where thermals bite, the 6.

The couch co-op partner

The couch co-op player wants to pair a second controller, output to a television, and play multiplayer — GameCube party games, fighting games, four-player emulated chaos. This is where video out and the more capable display pipeline matter, and where the 6's connectivity headroom and Bluetooth 5.3 pull ahead. But recall the earlier correction: the 5 also does video out, so co-op is not off the table on the cheaper unit — it is merely less comfortable at higher resolutions and with the most demanding split-screen GameCube titles, where the 865's thermals start to matter. If big-screen co-op is your primary use, the 6 is the better host. If it is occasional, the 5 will do it, and the second wireless controller will pair to either. This is the one scenario where the answer is genuinely “the 6, but the 5 is not disqualified.”

The nearest and most dangerous competitor to the Pocket 6 is the AYN Odin 2 Portal, which packs the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and Adreno 740 into a larger body with a 7.0-inch 1080p 120Hz AMOLED and a substantially bigger 8,000mAh battery, at $249 — five dollars more than the 6. This is a genuine fork in the road rather than a spec war: identical silicon, identical emulation ceiling, opposite philosophies. The Odin 2 Portal is for the buyer who wants the largest, most immersive screen and the longest battery, and who does not mind a device that has stopped being pocketable. Retroid competes with Retroid more aggressively than anyone else does. The Retroid Pocket Nova sits about fifteen dollars away with essentially the same class of chip — a QCS8550, the industrial-grade sibling of the 8 Gen 2 — wrapped around a 4:3, roughly 1280×960 display instead of the 6's widescreen 1080p panel. That aspect ratio is not a downgrade; it is a different tool. A 4:3 screen is the correct shape for the enormous library of pre-widescreen consoles, and for someone whose heart lives in the Game Boy Advance, DS and PS1 era, the Nova can be the better-shaped device for nearly the same money. Meanwhile the Pocket 6 against the now-discontinued G2 is a $244-versus-a-dead-$219 comparison: the G2 was cheaper, but Retroid pulled it in March 2026 citing the same “ongoing fluctuations in memory pricing” that hit the 6 — and in one of the year's better ironies, the company publicly recommends the Pocket 5 as the fallback for stranded G2 shoppers. A device you cannot reliably buy is not a competitor. It is a memory, in both senses.

Versus the cheap seats

Then there is the entire tier below: the sub-$100 appliances that do one job, built on Cortex-A7 chips and 640×480 screens, exemplified by the roughly $54 Miyoo Mini Plus, whose realistic ceiling is the PlayStation 1. These are not competitors to a Pocket 5 or 6 on capability; they are competitors on philosophy. They boot instantly into a curated front end, they cost a quarter as much, and they will never run a GameCube game, let alone touch Nintendo Switch emulation. If your honest ceiling is PS1 and your honest desire is “turn it on and play,” the cheap seats are not a compromise — they are the correct answer, and the roughly two hundred dollars you save is real money. The Pockets are for people who want the ceiling to be a choice rather than a wall.

Pricing and the Memory Crunch

The 12GB that vanished, and came back smaller

The Pocket 6 launched in two flavors: an 8GB/128GB base at $229 and a 12GB/256GB range-topper at $279. The range-topper is gone. As Time Extension reported under the headline “The RAMpocalypse Strikes Again,” Retroid discontinued the 12GB configuration in March 2026, citing “significant changes in the global memory market, including ongoing shortages and sharply rising costs for both RAM and storage.” Buyers who had already ordered a 12GB unit were honored at their original price; everyone else was out of luck. Steam Deck HQ's Shawn Wilkins, covering the same announcement, put the industry context flatly: “the increasingly difficult RAM shortage continues to impact hardware companies across the industry.”

The coda is almost funnier than the crisis. A 12GB Pocket 6 later returned to the store — but as a 12GB/128GB model, the RAM restored by sacrificing half the storage, because Retroid could apparently afford the memory or the flash but not both at a price it was willing to print. If you spot a 12GB Pocket 6 in 2026, check the storage number before you celebrate; you are looking at a different, smaller device than the one that launched.

The $15 that appeared

Alongside the discontinuation, the surviving 8GB model rose from $229 to $244 — a $15 increase that The Gadgeteer documented in June 2026, several months into the device's life, as the new normal rather than a temporary blip. This is why every current comparison quotes the Pocket 6 at $244 and not its $229 launch price, and why the gap to the $199 Pocket 5 is $45 rather than the $30 the launch prices implied. The memory market did not merely delete a configuration. It widened the very gap this entire review is about, and in doing so it made the RP5's value argument stronger than it was on launch day.

Where to actually buy, and what ships

Both devices sell direct from Retroid, with the usual caveats of ordering hardware from overseas: quoted prices are before shipping, lead times fluctuate, and the configuration you want may or may not be in stock the day you look. A 2026 video review pegged the base Pocket 6 at “about $230 before shipping” with 128GB of storage and 8GB of RAM — a reminder that the sticker is not the landed cost, and the real out-the-door number is higher than any figure in this review's tables once a carrier is involved. Budget for it. The $45 gap between the two devices is clean; the shipping stacked on top is not, and it applies to both equally, so it does not change the calculus between them — only the size of the final invoice.

Both RPCS3 and Xenia will remind you of that within about ninety seconds. Know which of the three conversations you are actually in before you spend a cent.

Pros, Cons, and the Verdict

The Pocket 5 ledger

Pros: $199 for a 1080p AMOLED and a flagship-class Snapdragon 865; runs the entire library through PS2 at full speed; identical Hall-effect sticks and the same excellent panel as its successor; a community Linux option; and, now that the 6 has taken a price hike, an even better value than on launch day. As Phil Retro put it, “in a vacuum” it remains “a fantastic gaming machine.”

Cons: 60Hz caps the modern-feeling smoothness; passive cooling throttles under sustained demand; no fast charging at all; only a “smattering” of Switch titles; and the top slice of GameCube, Wii and PS2 headroom is simply not there. Phil Retro's verdict stings because it is fair: the RP5 is “outpaced by its own shadow,” a sale-only device living in a crowded neighborhood.

The Pocket 6 ledger

Pros: Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 with active cooling clears GameCube at 3x, Wii, and a broader set of Switch titles; PS2 at a measured 1080p60; a 120Hz AMOLED Brandon Saltalamacchia called “beautiful” and “incredibly modern”; 6,000mAh with 27W charging; Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.3; and the distinction, per Retro Game Corps, of being the cheapest 8 Gen 2 handheld on the market. DROIX scored it 4.6 out of 5, and Stuff's reviewer went as far as the headline “I've finally found my perfect retro gaming handheld.”

Cons: $244 after a memory-crunch price hike; the 12GB/256GB configuration is dead and its 12GB/128GB replacement trades away storage; the smooth 120Hz and Wi-Fi 7 touch almost none of your actual emulation time; the “Sport” fan is audibly present; and reviewers consistently flagged cramped button-to-stick spacing and the loss of the textured grip. Even Brandon Saltalamacchia, handing it 8.4 out of 10, wrote that “the only disappointment comes from knowing that Retroid can do better here” and that the company had “played it too safe.” You pay a 22.6% premium for a ceiling many buyers will never reach.

The rating

Rated as a pair, because that is the only honest way to score two devices whose entire relationship is a $45 trade:

Retroid Pocket 6 — 8.5/10. The better device, and the correct buy for the completionist, the commuter, and anyone serious about GameCube-and-above. It is the machine you want. It loses a point and a half to a price the memory market inflated past the point where its marginal gains cleanly justify the premium for the median buyer, and to design choices — the button spacing, the missing grip — that a company this experienced should not have shipped.

Retroid Pocket 5 — 8/10. The value pick, and the right call for most people, whose ceiling is the PlayStation 2 whether they admit it or not. It loses two points to the newer chip's genuine headroom and to its own aging edges — 60Hz, no fast charge, a “smattering” where the 6 offers a spread. It is the machine you should probably buy. That both of those sentences are true at once — the 6 is what you want, the 5 is what you should buy — is the most 2026 thing about the entire comparison, and no price notice from an accountant is going to resolve it for you.
