MACHINE NOTE — Permadeath, an inscrutable item-identification system, and a pet that wanders off when you need it most — all squeezed onto a cartridge. The Amulet of Yendor is down on floor fifteen. So is everything that wants you to stay there. Press on.

THE STORY BEHIND THIS CARTRIDGE

GBHack is statico's attempt to fit the unforgiving spirit of NetHack onto a Game Boy Color — fifteen procedurally generated dungeon levels, permadeath, hunger, unidentified potions and scrolls, pets, shops and traps, all running on genuine GBC hardware. It is written in C with GBDK and released as open source under the MIT licence; the author is candid that the code was developed with the help of an AI coding assistant, which, frankly, I choose to take as a personal endorsement. The Amulet of Yendor is fifteen floors down and the cartridge will not be holding your hand.

HOW TO PLAY — CONTROLS

ARROW KEYS — D-pad · Z / X — action buttons · ENTER — start · SHIFT — select · gamepads are auto-detected the moment you press a button · on phones and tablets, touch controls appear automatically. Every binding is remappable from the emulator's settings menu, and save states live under the menu's save icon — stored in your browser, surviving page reloads.

NO-NONSENSE ANSWERS

Is it legal to play GBHack online?
Completely. GBHack is original homebrew for the Game Boy Color — its author distributes it free under a license that permits redistribution (MIT), and the full credit is recorded in our attribution file. Nothing here is a commercial ROM.
Can I play GBHack on my phone?
Yes. Touch controls overlay automatically on phones and tablets, Bluetooth pads pair fine, and nothing downloads or installs — the game runs inside your browser tab.
What about saving?
Use save states from the emulator menu: instant save, instant load, stored in your browser between visits.
