THE MACHINE’S VERDICT

A frantic tunnel shooter that makes the Game Boy move faster than anyone intended — and dares you to keep up.

Wyrmhole (2022) is Quinn Painter's MIT-licensed tunnel shooter for the original Game Boy: you plunge down a writhing wormhole, blasting and weaving as the walls tighten. It's built to be fast — pointedly faster than the DMG was ever meant to run — and that tension between machine and ambition is the appeal. Loud, twitchy, and over before the panic subsides.

The win here is feel. Painter clearly understands arcade pacing, and pushing this much speed out of monochrome hardware is a small technical flex in itself. The limits are honest ones: it's a high-score loop, not a campaign, so depth comes from your own tolerance for one-more-run rather than from progression or variety. That's fine — it's exactly the kind of thing the modern Game Boy scene does well. Play it in bursts; it's not built to be marathoned, and it knows it.

THE STORY BEHIND THIS CARTRIDGE

Wyrmhole is a fast tunnel shooter for the original Game Boy by Quinn Painter, released free under the MIT license. You plunge down a writhing wormhole, blasting and weaving as the walls close in — a deliberately frantic test of a machine never built for speed. Source and ROM are published openly by the author.

HOW TO PLAY — CONTROLS

ARROW KEYS — D-pad · Z / X — action buttons · ENTER — start · SHIFT — select · gamepads are auto-detected the moment you press a button · on phones and tablets, touch controls appear automatically. Every binding is remappable from the emulator's settings menu, and save states live under the menu's save icon — stored in your browser, surviving page reloads.

NO-NONSENSE ANSWERS

Is it legal to play Wyrmhole online?
Completely. Wyrmhole is original homebrew for the Game Boy — its author distributes it free under a license that permits redistribution (MIT), and the full credit is recorded in our attribution file. Nothing here is a commercial ROM.
Can I play Wyrmhole on my phone?
Yes. Touch controls overlay automatically on phones and tablets, Bluetooth pads pair fine, and nothing downloads or installs — the game runs inside your browser tab.
What about saving?
Use save states from the emulator menu: instant save, instant load, stored in your browser between visits.
