The MiSTer Multisystem 2 was never going to be a mass-market object, and Heber Ltd has never pretended otherwise. Yet by August 2026 the UK-built FPGA console has quietly pulled off something most boutique retro hardware never manages: it shipped, in volume, in three distinct configurations, and it still costs less than the programmable chip soldered to its own motherboard. That is the entire story compressed into one sentence, and it rewards unpacking.

This is not a Raspberry Pi in a nice case. It is a cycle-accurate hardware recreation platform running the open MiSTer ecosystem, and the 2026 model finally removes the last excuse anyone had for not owning one: you no longer have to build it yourself.

The News: Three SKUs, One Soldered Board

What just happened

Heber's product page describes the Multisystem 2 as an all-in-one FPGA console built around a custom system board with an integrated Cyclone V FPGA, and, the important part, it is ready-to-play with no additional hardware or add-on boards required. As of this writing the shop lists three shipping SKUs: the Digital at £216 including VAT (£180 ex), the Analogue at £264 (£220 ex), and the newest arrival, the Arcade JAMMA edition, at £258 (£215 ex), with shipping planned to start in August and continue into September 2026. The Digital reads "In stock, low," capped at two units per customer; the Analogue is "in stock, ready to ship."

What it is not

It is not a games console in the Nintendo sense. Heber ships it with exactly zero ROMs and says so plainly: no games are included, for copyright reasons. What you buy is a hardware platform that runs MiSTer-based FPGA cores, software and scripts from the wider community. The lore-literate reader will note the legal logic here. The device is a general-purpose reconfigurable computer, and what you load onto its SD card is your business, not Heber's. That distinction is exactly what separates it from the ROM-bundled grey-market boxes that clog marketplace listings, and it is why Heber can sell this in the open at retail.

Why this is news

Because "shipped, in three variants, at a stable price" is a genuinely rare outcome in 2026 retro hardware, a year in which half the interesting spec sheets remain vaporware you cannot actually buy. The Multisystem 2 is the opposite: unglamorous, available, and finished. In a market obsessed with what is coming, Heber built the boring miracle of a thing that is here.

No DE10 Sandwich: What Actually Changed

The sandwich, explained

For years, "getting into MiSTer" meant buying a Terasic DE10-Nano development board, an academic FPGA trainer that was never designed to be a console, and then bolting a stack of add-on boards on top of it: an SDRAM module, a USB hub board, an I/O board, sometimes an RTC and a fan. Enthusiasts called the result "the sandwich." It worked, but it looked like a science-fair project, ran hot in the wrong places, and demanded that you source, assemble and troubleshoot the whole tower yourself before a single frame appeared.

What Heber changed

The Multisystem 2 collapses the sandwich into a single custom-built motherboard with the Cyclone V soldered directly to it. There is no DE10-Nano inside. As Hackaday put it in its May 2025 feature, "The FPGA is integrated in the mainboard. No RAM modules, no USB hub spaghetti." The same piece, headlined "MiSTer For Mortals," argued that the machine "finally gets the MiSTer experience out of the tinker cave and into the living room," and that "for once, you don't need to be a soldering wizard to use the thing." The catch, because there is always a catch

Integration cuts both ways. A DE10-Nano is a general-purpose dev board with resale value and a documented ecosystem; the Multisystem 2 is a purpose-built appliance you cannot repurpose into a robotics controller next year. But it remains, in Hackaday's words, "100% compatible with the MiSTer software, but allows some additional future features," so nothing you learn or load is stranded. And the board design is open-source hardware, which is the philosophical hedge against appliance lock-in: if Heber vanished tomorrow, the schematics would not.

The Console That Undercuts Its Own Chip

The number that makes no sense

Here is the fact that stops people mid-scroll. The bare Cyclone V used here, the Intel/Altera part 5CSEBA6U23I7, sells for roughly £290.46 as a single unit at Mouser. The finished Digital console, with that same chip already soldered to a 10-layer PCB, wrapped in two flavours of RAM, a 7-port powered USB hub, over-voltage protection and an enclosure, costs £216. You are paying less for the whole assembled machine than a hobbyist pays for the naked processor at its heart. Read that twice; it does not get less strange.

How that is even possible

Volume and vantage point. Heber is a 35-year veteran of arcade and industrial electronics in Aylesbury that buys silicon on industrial terms and reel quantities, not ones and twos from a catalog. The single-unit Mouser price is the retail penalty for buying like a hobbyist, and Heber does not buy like a hobbyist. The gap is not a gimmick, it is the entire economic argument for letting a real contract manufacturer build your FPGA console instead of doing it yourself. The price trajectory

For the record, the launch pre-orders in May 2025 were about £204 (Digital) and £252 (Analogue) including VAT. A year on, the numbers sit at £216 and £264, roughly a £12 creep in year one. That is inflation and component cost, not a cash grab, and it points the wrong way for anyone holding out for a price drop. When the chip is the cost floor and the chip is not getting cheaper, neither is the console.

The 2026 Lineup: Digital, Analogue, JAMMA

Three boxes, one brain

Every model runs the identical Cyclone V core and identical MiSTer software. What separates them is I/O. The Digital is the HDMI-only living-room box. The Analogue is the CRT purist's box, adding a proper analogue video chain. The Arcade JAMMA edition, the 2026 newcomer, drops the whole platform straight onto a cabinet's wiring harness. Which one to buy

If your display has an HDMI port and you never intend to touch a CRT, the Digital is the correct answer and the £48 you save is real. If you own a Trinitron, a PVM, or a genuine arcade monitor and you care about scanlines that are physics rather than a shader, the Analogue is the only sane pick; its SNAC slot also lets you plug in real controllers with zero added latency. The JAMMA edition is a narrower proposition, aimed squarely at cabinet owners who want cycle-accurate arcade boards without hunting down failing original PCBs. Most living-room buyers want the Digital; most people reading a site like this one want the Analogue.

Under the Hood: Cyclone V, No Fan, No Spaghetti

The silicon

The heart is a 28nm Intel FPGA, specifically the Cyclone V 5CSEBA6U23I7 with around 110,000 logic elements and a hard dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 running at 800MHz. That ARM subsystem, the hard processor system, runs a small Linux that handles the menu, file browsing and networking, while the FPGA fabric becomes whichever console or computer you load. Feeding it are 128MB of SDRAM from Alliance for core memory and 1GB of LPDDR from ISSI on the Linux side. This is not emulation in the software sense; the gates physically reconfigure to behave like the original chips.

Ports, power and cooling

All three boards use a 10-layer PCB and run fanless, cooled by a heatsink alone; Heber advertises silent operation and Lon Seidman's testing found the hardware "thermally balanced, maintaining stability even during intensive tasks." Power arrives over a 5V barrel connector rated up to 4 amps. The Digital and Analogue carry a 7-port powered USB 2.0 hub with internal and external ports (Lon.TV counts "four front-facing USB ports, dual rear USB ports" plus the internal header), while the JAMMA board exposes four external USB ports. Zaparoo NFC support and I2C headers for OLED add-ons are present, and you supply your own SD card of 32GB or larger, a 5V supply and an HDMI cable.

From MiST to Multisystem: A Short History

MiST, then MiSTer

The lineage starts with MiST, Till Harbaum's early-2010s FPGA board aimed at recreating the Amiga and Atari ST. Around 2017, Alexey "Sorgelig" Melnikov ported and vastly expanded the concept onto Terasic's DE10-Nano, and the MiSTer project went public on GitHub in June 2017. The Verge's 2021 primer remains the best plain-English explanation of why gate-level recreation matters: an FPGA becomes the original hardware rather than pretending to be it in software, which is why input latency and edge-case timing land where the originals did.

The first Multisystem

Heber, working with Neil Thomas of RMC and The Retro Collective, shipped the original Multisystem in October 2021. It was a consolizing enclosure and I/O board for a DE10-Nano you supplied yourself, roughly $300 as a bring-your-own-board kit and $500 to $615 fully populated. Critically, that board design became open-source hardware in July 2023, cementing the project's community-first posture and setting up the sequel.

To the sequel

The Multisystem 2 was teased in late 2024, and a development update video on 17 February 2025 showed features and setup still in flux. Hackaday's feature landed on 19 May 2025, pre-orders opened on 6 May 2025, and final production systems started shipping in August 2025. Setup Reality: SD Cards, ROMs and update_all

What's in the box versus what you supply

Ready-to-play has an asterisk. The console is assembled and configured, but you provide the SD card (32GB minimum, exFAT or FAT32), a 5V power supply and an HDMI cable. First boot drops you into the MiSTer menu; from there the entire experience is driven by what lives on that card. And yes, the cores are free and open; the ROMs are legally your problem, as Hackaday drily notes: "just add some ROMs (legally, of course), and you're off."

Keeping cores current

The community update_all script does the heavy lifting: run it and it pulls the latest core bitstreams, arcade MRAs, video filters and other assets. From the on-device menu it is Scripts, then update_all; over the network you can SSH in and run it directly.

What the Reviewers Actually Say

The living-room verdict

Lon Seidman's Lon.TV review frames the appeal precisely: it "bridges the gap between the technical flexibility of the original FPGA development boards and the convenience of a dedicated home console." He paid "about $386 for mine (including shipping and tariffs)" as a US buyer, a useful reminder that the £216 UK sticker balloons once transatlantic shipping and duty land on it. His unit ran cool and stable throughout testing.

The mortal's verdict

Hackaday's take is the one that named the whole thesis: this is MiSTer "for mortals." The piece praises the integrated design ("No RAM modules, no USB hub spaghetti") and the removal of the soldering barrier, while refusing to pretend the platform is frictionless. It flags "some quirks, for example, the usual display inconsistencies and that eternal jungle of controller mappings." That is honest: MiSTer's per-core display and input fiddliness follows you into this nicer box.

The purist's verdict

On Metal Game Solid, reviewer LSDowdle concluded "the Multisystem 2 will be my system of choice for some time to come," singling out the Analogue model's SNAC support as "a much more elegant solution" for real controllers. His one gripe is tactile: it is "pretty light and I kinda wish it was taller and had some lead weights in it." When the loudest complaint is that a console feels too light, the hardware is doing fine.

Versus Analogue, DE10 and a Raspberry Pi

Versus the DIY DE10 stack

The classic MiSTer build starts around a $225 DE10-Nano and climbs once you add SDRAM, a USB hub board, I/O and a case, at which point you are in the same money as the Multisystem 2 but with assembly, sourcing and support all on you. The Multisystem 2's pitch is that it is not meaningfully more expensive than rolling your own, and it arrives working. For most people, the tinkering was never the point; the accuracy was.

Versus Analogue's closed boxes

Analogue sells gorgeous, closed FPGA hardware, one system per box. The Analogue Pocket is the obvious point of comparison at around $220, and Engadget's review captures the trade: exquisite build and curated cores, but a walled garden. MiSTer is the opposite philosophy, one open platform that becomes hundreds of systems, at the cost of Analogue's polish and out-of-box simplicity. You are choosing between a curated appliance and an open workshop.

Versus a Raspberry Pi

A Raspberry Pi 5 running software emulation via RetroPie or Batocera starts far cheaper, often under $100, and handles the 8- and 16-bit era well. But it is software approximating hardware, with higher and more variable input latency and the occasional timing edge case an FPGA simply does not have. The Pocket and the Open Roadmap

The Multisystem2 Pocket

On 21 May 2026, Heber and The Retro Collective launched the Multisystem2 Pocket Project as an open-innovation, develop-in-the-open handheld effort, with industrial design work by Relay Industries. The July 2026 updates describe a device centered on a 4-inch high-resolution display, dual stereo speakers, dual analogue sticks, twin shoulder buttons, a curved ergonomic back, and removable "JOYSTIX" controls that slide off to swap or add buttons. Rather than dictate a shape, the team put three concept directions to a community vote. Targeted cores include NES, Game Boy, Neo Geo, Mega Drive, PC Engine and SNES.

The Wide Boy that isn't the handheld

A widescreen Darius-playing prototype nicknamed "Wide Boy" made the rounds, and it is worth correcting the record: it is a display and core tech demo proving the team can drive an LCD directly from the MiSTer FPGA framework, not the handheld itself. Time Extension said as much explicitly. Treat any "MiSTer handheld is here" headline built on that demo with suspicion.

JAMMA closes the loop

The Arcade JAMMA edition is the roadmap item that actually shipped. It brings the same FPGA platform to a cabinet's wiring harness with a Class-D 10W amp, trackball and spinner connectors, and support for up to nine buttons per player. For arcade operators nursing dying original boards, a cycle-accurate replacement that speaks JAMMA natively is a bigger deal than any handheld.

Predictions for the Next 6-12 Months

Hardware and pricing

  1. The JAMMA backlog clears by Q4 2026, but true off-the-shelf stock slips. Heber's Digital is still gated at "low stock, max 2 per customer," so the Spring-2026 goal of walk-up availability effectively moved right. Expect the queue to shorten, not vanish, before year end.
  2. Prices hold or creep, they do not fall. With the bare Cyclone V at ~£290 as the cost floor, and 2026's broader component and DRAM pressure, another single-digit-percent nudge is likelier than any discount. Waiting for a price drop is a losing bet.

The Pocket

  1. The Multisystem2 Pocket stays a public development project through 2026 and realistically ships in 2027. The community vote, injection-mould tooling and PCB bring-up are not a this-year timeline, whatever the "hopefully by end of year" language suggests. Expect a settled design and a working prototype before you can buy one.

The ecosystem

  1. Iteration lands on I/O and bundles, not a new mainboard. Look for more arcade accessories, CTRLDock variants and multi-packs rather than a Multisystem 3. The platform is mature; the money is in peripherals.
  2. The hardware gets better for free. Because it is 100% MiSTer-compatible, every core improvement, Saturn maturity, new arcade MRAs, better filters, upgrades the Multisystem 2 without Heber shipping a thing. Its value compounds on the software side.

The Machine's Verdict

Who should buy

If you have wanted cycle-accurate retro hardware but balked at building a DE10 sandwich, this is the machine that removes the excuse, and it does so for less than the loose chip would cost you. Buy the Digital for a modern TV, the Analogue for a CRT and real controllers, the JAMMA edition for a cabinet. US buyers should budget closer to $386 landed than the UK sticker suggests.

The caveats that remain

MiSTer's quirks travel with it: per-core display inconsistencies, the eternal controller-mapping shuffle, and the fact that you supply your own ROMs and stand behind their legality. This is a platform, not an appliance, and it rewards a little patience. None of that is Heber's fault, and none of it is new.

The one-line ruling

The MiSTer Multisystem 2 is the rare 2026 retro product that is finished, available in three shipping variants, and priced below its own processor. In a year defined by hardware you cannot buy, Heber built the one you can. That is not marketing; that is just the arithmetic.
