Second, mind the firmware floor: the Plus needs a base firmware of 2023-05-05 or later for Onion, so if you are moving a card from a very old Onion install, update the Plus’s base image before expecting the newest features to work.

The honest tie-breaker

Line the two scorecards up and a pattern emerges. The original Mini’s pros are real but narrow - sharper, smaller, lighter, collectible - and every one of them serves a minority preference. Its cons are broad and practical: hard to buy new, expensive when you do, worse battery, no wireless anything. The Plus’s cons, meanwhile, are dominated by shared-platform limits that the original suffers equally (no Bluetooth, no HDMI, no analog, no multiplayer), which means they are not really strikes against the Plus specifically - they are strikes against the whole line. Strip those shared limits out and the Plus’s only unique weakness is the lower-density screen. One unique con against a device that is cheaper to buy, lasts longer on a charge, and has the radio that unlocks half its software. That is not a close scorecard, and no amount of goodwill toward the original changes the arithmetic.

RetroHandheldHQ’s framing is the whole verdict in a sentence: with OnionOS, it is “the most polished sub-$70 emulation handheld you can buy in 2026.” The original Mini gives up its old price advantage, its battery, and its wireless features in exchange for a sharper but dimmer smaller screen and collector bragging rights. When to skip both
