So let us do this properly. This is a deep, opinionated, deliberately unglamorous comparison of two devices that are more alike than the spec sheets admit and more different than the price gap suggests. The $30 that became $35
Then the market intervened. Where 120Hz matters
The refresh rate earns its keep in three places. First, the operating system itself: navigating Android at 120Hz is simply more pleasant, and you spend more time in menus than you think. Second, native Android games and lightweight emulators — anything that can actually render above 60fps — get smoother motion. Third, and most defensibly, high-refresh emulation of the handful of systems whose games ran above 60fps or whose emulators can uncap the framerate. If you play a lot of native Android titles on your handheld, the 120Hz panel is a real, daily upgrade.
Where it's marketing

The Retroid Pocket 5 is a very good device that has been mugged by time and by its own successors. In September 2024 it was a clear 8-plus. In July 2026, at a $209 list price, sitting next to a faster sibling that costs $35 more, it is a harder sell — not because it got worse, but because the neighborhood got better. It remains the right buy for a specific person (budget-bound, PSP-and-below library, ideally catching a sale) and the wrong buy for almost everyone else at full price. Retroid Pocket 5: 7.5 / 10 at list — rising toward 8 the deeper it's discounted.
Who wins
Buy the Pocket 6. The $35 gap in late July 2026 is the best-spent thirty-five dollars in the Retroid catalog: it buys two generations of silicon, a fan that keeps that silicon honest, an hour more battery, and a screen that makes the whole machine feel current.
