Then you discover there are two of them wearing nearly the same shell — the Retroid Pocket 5 from September 2024 and the Retroid Pocket 6 that shipped in late 2025 — separated by roughly $45, one silicon generation, and a global memory-price crisis that has spent all of 2026 quietly rewriting the price tags while you deliberate.

This is the review that ends the paralysis. We have logged real hours on both, cross-checked every spec against the people who actually tore them down, and refused to repeat the marketing. The short version: the Pocket 6 is the better machine and it is worth the money for most buyers. The longer version — the one with the God of War II frame counts, the fan-noise caveats, and the $45 that is somehow both $35 and $45 depending on the week — is why you are here.

Who should still buy the Pocket 5

If your emulation ceiling is Dreamcast, PSP, PS1, and the entire 8- and 16-bit canon, the Pocket 5 (8.0/10) already runs all of it at 4x internal resolution and costs about $45 less. HandheldRank's Phil Retro diagnosed the RP5's 2026 predicament exactly: "In a vacuum, it's still a fantastic gaming machine. The problem isn't the device; it's the neighborhood it lives in." The silicon: SM8250 vs SM8550

The Pocket 5 runs the Snapdragon 865 — Qualcomm's SM8250 "Kona," a 7nm part from 2020 with the Adreno 650. It was a flagship phone chip, and it is still a very good emulation chip. The Pocket 6 runs the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 — SM8550 "Kalama," 4nm, a Cortex-X3 prime core at 3.2GHz sitting over four A715s and three A510s, feeding an Adreno 740 with Vulkan 1.3 and hardware ray tracing it will never be asked to use. On paper it is two-plus generations newer. In Geekbench 6 single-core it lands at 1,985 against the 865's 1,176 — a 69% jump — and the GPU roughly doubles. What the spec sheet quietly omits

Two things the marketing bullets skip. First, the RP6's RAM is LPDDR5x against the RP5's LPDDR4x — not merely more bandwidth but the reason a 12GB variant exists at all, and, as we are about to see, the reason it kept vanishing. Second, both use Hall-effect sticks and analog L2/R2 triggers, so neither will develop stick drift; that is table stakes now, and it is genuinely notable that a $199 device includes them when $70 controllers still do not. The 12GB model that vanished (and half-returned)

The 12GB model returned in June 2026 — but as a 12GB/128GB part at $279, its storage quietly halved to make the arithmetic survive. What you actually pay in 2026

The headline delta is about $45 — $244 for the Pocket 6 against the Pocket 5's $199 reference price. It compresses to roughly $35 if you catch the RP5 after Retroid bumped it to a 12GB base (about $209) in the same crunch, and it can widen again whenever the RP5 goes on sale, which it does often. Display, Weight, and the 40-Gram Tax

Same panel size, same resolution, very different object in the hand. This is the section where the Pocket 6 stops being a spec sheet and starts being a nicer thing to hold — at a cost measured in grams and decibels.

60Hz vs 120Hz on the same 1080p AMOLED

Both carry a 5.5-inch 1920x1080 AMOLED. On the Pocket 5 it runs at 60Hz; on the Pocket 6, 120Hz. For the SNES library this is irrelevant — those games render at 60fps or below and 120Hz changes nothing about Chrono Trigger. Five Ways It Actually Plays

Specs are hypotheticals; sessions are real. Here is how each device behaves for five kinds of player, because "faster" means different things depending on why you picked the thing up.

The casual and the completionist

Casual (an hour on the couch): Either device is overkill for a SNES RPG after dinner, and that is the point — both run the 16-bit canon flawlessly with the screen dimmed, sipping battery. The RP5's lighter 280g body is the better companion for long, low-stakes, one-handed-on-the-armrest sessions. Completionist (100% runs, the long haul): This is a Pocket 6 argument. Against the Odin 2 Portal

The AYN Odin 2 Portal at $249 is the Pocket 6's real rival: identical Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, but a larger 7-inch 1080p 120Hz OLED and a huge 8,000mAh battery. For $5 more you get more screen and dramatically more endurance. The catch is the whole premise of the Pocket line: the Odin is a two-handed slab, and the Pocket 6 is genuinely pocketable at 5.5 inches. If you play mostly at home, the Odin is arguably the better buy on the merits. If "pocket" is a literal requirement rather than a brand name, the RP6 wins on form factor while — per Russ at Retro Game Corps — remaining "the most affordable Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 handheld on the market" at $244, five dollars under the Odin.

Against its own siblings, and the Steam Deck

The Retroid Pocket G2 ($219) would have been the value spoiler, but the DRAM crunch discontinued it on March 16, 2026, and — in a twist worthy of the lore — Retroid's own recommendation to stranded G2 shoppers was to buy the Pocket 5. The Steam Deck OLED ($789 after its May 2026 hike) is a different class of machine entirely: it reaches into PS3 and Wii U and runs an actual PC library, but it is more than three times the price and never going in a jacket pocket. OTA, Android 13, and LineageOS

The Pocket 6 ships with Android 13 — not 15, whatever a mislabeled spec sheet claims; Android 15 belongs to the now-discontinued G2 — and receives official over-the-air updates, as does the Pocket 5. First, set your graphics backend to Vulkan everywhere it is offered — the Adreno drivers on both devices are Vulkan-first, and OpenGL is a fallback, not a preference. Second, cap internal resolution to what the target console actually needs rather than the maximum the slider allows; 4x PSP looks identical to 6x and costs half the battery for zero visible gain. Some people buy both: a Pocket 5-class device lives in the bag for the commute, and a Pocket 6 sits on the desk for the demanding library. But if you are buying exactly one, the Pocket 6 covers more of the spectrum than the Pocket 5 does, and it is the safer single purchase.

The upgrade-from-RP5 question

If you already own a Pocket 5 and it plays everything you emulate, there is no upgrade here — the RP5 did not get worse, and paying $244 to run games you already run is a bad trade dressed up as progress. Cons: 30 to 40 grams heavier and physically larger; the fan is audible in Sport mode; the 12GB configuration keeps appearing and disappearing thanks to the RAM crunch; only ~2.5-3 hours of battery under full PS2/GameCube load; and, as Saltalamacchia needled in his 8.4/10, Retroid "played it too safe" — "a $250 device should have something unique," and this one is a very good iteration rather than a reinvention.

Pocket 5: pros and cons

Pros: lighter and more comfortable at 280g; maxes everything up to Dreamcast and PSP at 4x; the same lovely 5.5-inch AMOLED; the same drift-proof Hall sticks; completely silent; roughly $45 cheaper; and Retroid literally recommends it as the fallback for its own discontinued models, which is an unusual kind of endorsement.

Cons: 60Hz only; no fast-charge; PS2 and GameCube are near-native-resolution compromises rather than showcases; Switch is effectively off the table; and, per Phil Retro, it is "a sale-only device... outpaced by its own shadow" — cannibalized from above by the very Pocket 6 it is being compared against here.

The dealbreakers

If audible fan noise ruins immersion for you, or if a sub-300g weight is genuinely non-negotiable, those are legitimate reasons to take the Pocket 5 despite its lower ceiling. Everything else on these two lists is a preference, not a defect. Neither device has a flaw worth calling a dealbreaker for the average buyer — this is a comparison of two good machines, not a rescue of one bad one.

Retroid Pocket 6 — 8.5/10

The best small-form-factor emulation handheld you can buy for the money in 2026, and the one to buy unless you have a specific reason not to. It converts a two-generation silicon jump into real, visible gains — 3x GameCube, practical Wii, a Switch shortlist — and pairs them with a 120Hz screen and a battery that fast-charges. It loses half a point for the audible fan, the added weight, and Retroid's refusal to take a single design risk. Notebookcheck's summary is the fair one: reviewers "praise its performance and value, but knock some of its design choices." Techxreviews went further, calling it a device that "sets a new bar for what we should expect from mid-range emulation handhelds."

Retroid Pocket 5 — 8.0/10

Still an excellent machine, and the value pick for anyone whose library tops out at Dreamcast and PSP. It scores half a point below the Pocket 6 for exactly one reason, and that reason is not a flaw in the device — it is the neighbor. Phil Retro said it best: "In a vacuum, it's still a fantastic gaming machine. The problem isn't the device; it's the neighborhood it lives in." At $199, or on one of its frequent sales, it remains one of the easiest recommendations in the entire category.

The bottom line

Pay the $45. The Pocket 6 is faster, smoother, cooler under sustained load, and future-proofed with LineageOS in a way the Pocket 5 is not, and $244 for the cheapest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 handheld on the market is a genuinely good deal in a year when the RAM market is doing its level best to make good deals extinct. Buy the Pocket 5 only if weight, silence, or budget draws a hard line — in which case you are still getting a machine that would have been the class of the field two years ago, because it was. Newer, faster, worth it.

For PS2, GameCube, Wii, and select Switch titles, yes. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is about 70% faster in single-core than the 865 (Geekbench 6: 1,985 vs 1,176), and the 120Hz AMOLED, 6,000mAh battery, and active cooling are real upgrades. If your ceiling is PSP, Dreamcast, and PS1, the Pocket 5 already maxes those at 4x for less.
What can the Retroid Pocket 6 emulate that the Pocket 5 can't?
The RP6 pushes GameCube to 3x native (Rogue Squadron, even F-Zero GX at 2x), makes Wii practical (Super Mario Galaxy, Xenoblade), runs PS2 at 1.5-2x, and handles select Switch titles via mature Turnip Vulkan drivers. The RP5 handles GameCube only in easy cases like Wind Waker and Melee. Neither runs PS3 or Xbox 360 — RPCS3 is a slideshow on both.
Why did the Retroid Pocket 6 go from $229 to $244?
The 2026 DRAM crunch, as fabs shifted memory production toward AI-server HBM. Retroid raised the 8GB model $15 on March 2, 2026 and discontinued the 12GB/256GB config; Retroid's Andy Walker said the memory surge reached "a level that we are unfortunately unable to absorb." The same crisis discontinued the Pocket G2 entirely two weeks later.
Is the Retroid Pocket 5 still worth buying in 2026?
In a vacuum, yes. HandheldRank's Phil Retro put it well: "The problem isn't the device; it's the neighborhood it lives in." At its ~$199 price (or on sale) it's the best value in the range for anything up to Dreamcast and PSP, which it runs at 4x — but it's clearly outclassed above that by its own faster sibling.
Retroid Pocket 6 vs Odin 2 Portal — which is better?
Same Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, so raw power is a wash. The Odin 2 Portal is $249 with a bigger 7-inch 1080p 120Hz OLED and an 8,000mAh battery; the RP6 is $244, far more pocketable at 5.5 inches, and, per Retro Game Corps' Russ, "the most affordable Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 handheld on the market." Pick the Odin for home use, the RP6 if pocketability matters.
