The Odin 2 Portal Problem

Phil Retro's line is the whole review in a sentence: "In a vacuum... still a fantastic gaming machine," undone because "the problem isn't the device; it's the neighborhood it lives in." It maxes everything up through PS1, PSP, and Dreamcast, weighs less, and — post-July shuffle — costs $209 with 12GB of RAM. If it were still comfortably under $200 it would score higher. At $35 below a Pocket 6, it is a fine device asking an awkward question of its own price tag. 8.0/10.

The Machine's Call

Buy the Pocket 6 if you play sixth-generation consoles — GameCube, Wii, PS2 — or intend to keep the thing for years. Keep or buy the Pocket 5 if your library stops at the fifth generation and you value weight and price over headroom. The $45 gap the launch sheets advertised is real, the performance gap behind it is larger than the number suggests, and the DRAM crunch that reshaped both price tags will keep moving them for as long as the AI buildout eats the world's memory. Pick the tier that matches your library, ignore any marketing that promises PS3, and dump your own carts. That is the entire review.

Is the Retroid Pocket 6 worth $45 more than the Pocket 5?
Yes if you emulate GameCube, Wii, or select Switch titles — the 8 Gen 2 is ~70% faster single-core (Geekbench 6: 1,985 vs 1,176), roughly 2x on GPU, and adds a 120Hz AMOLED plus active cooling. If you only play up to PS1/PSP/Dreamcast, the Pocket 5 already maxes those and the upgrade is invisible.
Why did the 12GB Retroid Pocket 6 get discontinued?
The 2026 DRAM crunch. Retroid told Android Authority on March 2 2026 that memory pricing had "reached a level that we are unfortunately unable to absorb" and it "cannot continue offering the 12GB configuration at a reasonable price." A 12GB model briefly returned in June 2026 as a 12GB/128GB variant at $279.
Can the Retroid Pocket 6 run PS3 or Xbox 360 games?
No. Despite the performance jump, RPCS3 and Xenia are slideshows on mobile silicon. The Pocket 6 tops out at PS2 (1.5–2x native), GameCube/Wii (3x native), Dreamcast/PSP/PS1 (4x), and select Switch titles. Anything marketing that promises seventh-generation HD consoles is wrong.
Is emulation on the Retroid Pocket legal?
The emulator software is legal — Sony v. Connectix, 203 F.3d 596 (9th Cir. 2000), ruled reverse-engineering a console BIOS to be fair use, calling the result "modestly transformative." Downloading ROMs for games you do not own is copyright infringement. The legal path is dumping your own cartridges and discs.
Should I buy the Pocket 6 or the AYN Odin 2 Portal?
Both are about $249 with the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. The Odin 2 Portal has a bigger 7-inch 1080p 120Hz OLED and an 8,000mAh battery but is chunkier and heavier; the Pocket 6 is 5.5 inches and far more pocketable. Pick by size preference — the RP6 is the smallest good 8 Gen 2 handheld, the Portal is the biggest-screen value play.
